About the exam

About JMI Entrance

Applying to Jamia Millia Islamia means choosing a programme first and a test second. Each programme or programme group carries its own paper, its own date and its own syllabus, and a small set of courses is decided elsewhere: those in one annexure of the prospectus on CUET, and a few professional degrees on JEE Main, NATA, NEET or NCET ranks. Everything else, from B.A. (Hons) History to the M.B.A., turns on a Jamia paper, followed in some programmes by an interview.

The JMI University Prospectus 2026-27 sets the rule in its general guidelines: admission to programmes across the university's faculties and centres is by merit in an entrance test conducted by JMI, "and wherever applicable, followed by an interview and/or other components". The same clause names the exceptions, B.Tech, B.Arch., BDS, ITEP B.Sc.-B.Ed, ITEP B.A. B.Ed, BPT and the courses listed in its Annexure VI, and the prospectus's academics section puts it from the other side: students are admitted "in few other Undergraduate Courses of the university through CUET conducted by N.T.A."

How each route worked in the 2026-27 cycle, as the prospectus and the notices beside it describe it:

The B.P.T. row is the one that changed mid-cycle. The prospectus first routed the physiotherapy degree through NEET-2026, and a corrigendum signed by the Offg. Controller of Examinations replaced that line with "Jamia Millia Islamia will conduct its own Admission Test", in Delhi. JMI's 2026-27 notice list dates that corrigendum 21 April 2026. Annexure I of the prospectus still shows B.P.T. "Based on NEET 2026 Rank/Score", so the corrigendum is the document that governs.

M.Sc. (Biotechnology) ran on two routes at once in 2026-27: the prospectus gave 10 of its seats to the GAT-B score and the rest to a Jamia paper, which Annexure I scheduled for 05 June 2026.

Demand is heavy for seats decided this way. The 2026-27 prospectus puts the university's average demand ratio for the previous year at 1:19. Jamia became a Central University by an Act of Parliament in 1988, and a judgment dated 22.2.2011 declared it a Minority Educational Institution under Article 30(1) of the Constitution, which is why its reserved categories are built around Muslim applicants.

JMI printed its 2026-27 schedule as tentative on the Important Dates page of the prospectus:

The closing date did not hold. The Office of the Controller of Examinations issued an extension notice moving the last date for UG, PG, diploma, PG diploma, advanced diploma and certificate programmes to 02 April 2026, then a second extension notice, citing requests from applicants, moved it to 10 April 2026. The 2026-27 notice list dates those two notices 25 March 2026 and 06 April 2026.

Each programme then had its own date and slot in Annexure I of the prospectus. A sample of its 2026-27 entries:

Annexure I of the prospectus promises a list "Within 20 to 25 days from the date of Entrance Test". Where a programme has an interview or group discussion, that window belongs to the interview call and the selected list follows within 10 days of the last interview. The lists then kept coming for months, and the 2026-27 cycle has not finished closing. The B.B.A. and B.Com. (Hons) group's first list of selected candidates is dated 14 July 2026; the B.Tech fifth list, drawn from spot registration, dated 13 September 2026, tells the candidates on it that admission formalities "are to be completed by selected candidates on 16-09-2026 (9am to 1pm) in the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology". That prospectus carries dates for the 2026-27 session only, and the notice list has posted nothing for any session after it.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility is written programme by programme in Annexure I of the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27, and the thresholds move even within one faculty. Representative 2026-27 conditions:

• B.A. (Hons) English: Senior Secondary School Certificate or equivalent with not less than 50% marks in aggregate or in the subject concerned, per the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27.
• B.A. (Hons) Economics, B.B.A. and B.Com. (Hons): not less than 50% in the aggregate of the best five papers, or in the subject concerned, per the prospectus.
• B.Sc. (Hons) Physics: not less than 50% in the aggregate of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and in the subject concerned, per the prospectus.
• B.A.LL.B. (Hons): Class XII in any discipline with not less than 50% of the total marks in all the core subjects and English Language put together, per the prospectus.
• B.Tech, on JEE Main 2026 rank: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects and not less than 55% in PCM, or an engineering diploma of three or four years recognised by AICTE or a state board of technical education with not less than 55%, per the prospectus.
• B.Ed.: a bachelor's degree in a school teaching subject with not less than 50%, or with not less than 45% plus at least 50% in a master's in the same teaching subject; the main teaching subject must have been studied for at least two years or four semesters of graduation, and B.Com. (Hons) alone does not qualify, per the prospectus.
• M.B.A.: a bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% in aggregate or an equivalent grade; the M.B.A. (Executive) adds at least three years of experience at executive level, per the prospectus.
• M.A. (Sociology): a three-year bachelor's with a minimum of 120 credits, then one of the NEP routes (B.A. (Hons) Sociology with Research at 5.5 CGPA, without Research at 6.0, Sociology as major at 6.5, Sociology as minor at 7.0) or one of the older-system routes (B.A. (Hons) Sociology with 50%, B.A. with Sociology with 55%, another three-year degree with 60%), per the prospectus.
• BDS, on NEET 2026 rank: Annexure I adds an age condition, 17 years completed on or before 31 December of the year of admission, per the prospectus.

Relaxations come with limits. A reserved-category applicant may claim one category and one relaxation only, and persons with disabilities certified at not less than 40% get a relaxation of 5% marks in the qualifying examination, according to the prospectus. The same document gives NCC cadets 5% (an "A" or "B" certificate for undergraduate programmes, "C" for postgraduate), NSS volunteers who attended two ten-day special camps and a national integration or Republic Day camp 2%, and outstanding sportspersons 5%, then switches those three relaxations off for Architecture and Ekistics, Engineering and Technology, Dentistry, Physiotherapy and part-time or evening programmes.

A pending qualifying result does not stop an application. For programmes whose eligibility is a degree, the prospectus requires the result to reach the department by 31 October 2026, failing which the admission is cancelled and all fees forfeited.

Step by step

Application process and fee

Applications for 2026-27 were online only, at admission.jmi.ac.in, in two phases: registration with a basic profile, then the entrance application, where the candidate picks programmes and category and pays, as the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27 sets out. After registration the portal emails a unique code with a verification link and the login details. The only uploads are a colour passport photograph on a white background and a signature, each a JPG or JPEG of up to 100 KB; certificates, mark sheets and score cards are checked in original on the day of admission, or on the day of interview where a programme has one.

A few rules decide whether a form survives. Aadhaar is mandatory for applying, because the entrance test carries Aadhaar-integrated biometric verification. A candidate may submit only one form for each programme or group of programmes with a combined test, and multiple forms for the same programme can be rejected. Before registration is confirmed, any entry except name and date of birth can be corrected; once the editing window closes, the university will not change a candidate's category or programme at any stage, per the prospectus.

The national-test routes still run through JMI's form, with one exception. B.Tech, B.Arch. and ITEP applicants enter their JEE Main, NATA or NCET application number in the JMI form, and CUET candidates apply on JMI's portal after sitting the test. BDS applicants fill no JMI form at all: they choose Jamia Millia Islamia and the appropriate reservation category in the NEET application, according to the prospectus.

The application fee depends on which faculty or centre offers the programme:

The fee is paid by credit card, debit card or net banking and is non-refundable once JMI has received it; the prospectus refunds only transactions that failed at the university's end. There was one refund of a different kind. An admission notice on discontinued and direct-admission programmes said the fees of applicants to programmes that would not commence "due to a smaller number of applications received" would be returned to their bank accounts, and it gave applicants to certain other programmes, among them M.A. (Persian) and B.A. (Hons) Sanskrit, direct admission without an admission test.

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

JMI tells candidates by SMS or on the admission portal when admit cards are ready; the card is printed after logging in, and the candidate pastes a self-attested colour passport photograph in the space provided, as the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27 describes. It asks for two printed copies, because one is surrendered to the invigilators at the centre.

Entry needs that card and a valid ID, the Aadhaar card or another ID issued by the Government of India, per the prospectus. It warns that impersonation will be pursued under the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, against the original aspirant, the impersonator and the facilitator. Missing any component of the process, whether the written test, the group discussion or the interview, forfeits the claim to that programme, and candidates called for an interview bring the same admit card with self-attested copies of their documents and the originals.

Structure

Exam pattern

The prospectus fixes a few rules for every Jamia paper and leaves the rest to each programme's syllabus. According to the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27, there is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in objective or multiple-choice questions in all programmes except the Ph.D., and a candidate scoring less than 30% in the descriptive part of a test, where one exists, is not shortlisted for interview or admission. Candidates who appear are given a carbon copy of their O.M.R., and no request to recheck or re-evaluate an answer script is entertained. The B.Ed. paper is common to every medium and subject group and is printed in Hindi, English and Urdu.

Annexure I gives every paper a slot, and the slots differ: 09:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. for M.A. (Arabic), 02:30 P.M. to 05:30 P.M. for the M.B.A., and 09:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon for the Bachelor of Design, per the prospectus.

Other syllabi show how far apart the papers sit. The B.A.LL.B. (Hons) syllabus pairs a multiple-choice paper of 10+2 standard, covering legal language and English including comprehension, current affairs, legal aptitude and legal reasoning, general studies and elementary mathematics, with an oral interview that carries its own weightage. The B.B.A., B.Com. (Hons) and B.A. (Hons) Human Resource Management syllabus tests business and economic awareness, reasoning and quantitative aptitude, general English and general awareness. The MCA, M.Sc. (AI and ML), M.Sc. (Bioinformatics) and PGDCA paper has a name of its own, J-CAT, the Jamia-Computing Aptitude Test, and its syllabus gives M.Sc. (Bioinformatics) candidates a molecular biology component in place of the class XII mathematics others attempt.

What to study

Syllabus

There is a syllabus per programme rather than one syllabus for "the JMI entrance". The prospectus says the syllabi for its entrance tests, "along with the structure of the question paper and other necessary details including marks breakup, important instructions etc.", can be downloaded from the university's website, per the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27; the admission portal's entrance syllabus page serves them programme by programme, beside that programme's own result lists.

Undergraduate papers draw on school-leaving content. The B.A. (Hons) History syllabus spans ancient, medieval, modern and world history alongside Indian geography, polity, economy, cultural heritage, general science and current affairs, and the B.A. (Hons) Economics syllabus covers introductory microeconomics, macroeconomics and Indian economic development before its mathematics and statistics part. Postgraduate papers go to degree level: the M.A. (Economics) syllabus for 2026-27 runs through microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and econometrics, mathematical economics, and development studies and the Indian economy, while the M.A. (Psychology) syllabus lists general, social, health, physiological and abnormal psychology, organisational behaviour, research methodology and statistics, and child development.

Check the heading of whatever syllabus you download. The B.Sc. (Hons) Physics syllabus served for that programme is headed "Entrance Test 2025 Syllabus" and "Admission 2025-26", and the B.P.T. syllabus served for physiotherapy is headed "Syllabus for BPT Entrance Examination 2021-22".

How to prepare

Preparation and books

The JMI University Prospectus 2026-27 names no books or coaching material. The preparation document it points a candidate to is the programme's own syllabus, with the question structure and marks breakup inside it.

Exam centres

Only some papers travel beyond Delhi. For the programmes in the prospectus's Table 2, which include MCA, M.A. Economics, B.Ed., M.B.A., B.A. (Hons) History, B.B.A. and B.Com. (Hons), B.A.LL.B., M.A. Psychology, B.Sc. (Hons) Physics and several M.Tech papers, a candidate picks one test city from Delhi, Lucknow, Guwahati, Patna, Kolkata, Srinagar, Calicut, Bhopal, Jaipur, Dehradun and Kishanganj, according to the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27. Annexure I tags those papers "(Multi City)" beside the slot.

For those programmes Delhi is the default second choice behind whatever city a candidate picks. If the number of applicants is 49 or fewer, the prospectus lets JMI's competent authority hold that programme's test in Delhi or another city and tell candidates through the admit card, and the same authority may add or drop centres outside Delhi. Every remaining entrance test is held in New Delhi, mainly on the Jamia campus, and no change of centre is allowed later.

After the exam

Answer key

Answer keys cover multiple-choice questions only. The JMI University Prospectus 2026-27 says the key is uploaded on the admission result page within 5 working days of the test, that a candidate has 48 hours from the upload to submit a challenge online, and that each challenged question costs Rs 200; no grievance is entertained without the fee, or after that window. The admission portal keeps a key-challenge status list for session 2026-27 that prints the status against each programme code.

Scores

Result and scorecard

JMI's result is a list of roll numbers, not an individual score report. The JMI University Prospectus 2026-27 says the university prepares each programme's rank list strictly on entrance-test merit under its ordinances and its reservations and relaxations, clears it against the "Not to be Admitted List" kept by the Chief Proctor's office, and displays the provisionally selected candidates on its website with no intimation by post. Interview lists are displayed in ascending order of entrance-test roll number, and further lists may be drawn from the waiting list in order of merit.

The lists follow that shape. The first list for B.B.A., B.Com. (Hons) and B.A. (Hons) Human Resource Management selects candidates "on the basis of the aggregate marks secured by them in entrance test" and prints registration numbers, roll numbers and application IDs under selection categories: General, Muslim, Muslim Women, Muslim OBC/ST, PWD, Jamia Internal, JK and KM. The first list for B.A. (Hons) Hindi, a CUET programme, is dated 11.08.2026 and selects "on the basis of score of CUET 2026 as per merit".

Ties have a fixed order. For programmes JMI tests itself, the prospectus ranks the older candidate higher; in interview programmes the higher mark in the written component comes first, and age decides only if those are equal too. For B.Tech, B.Arch., BDS, ITEP and the CUET programmes, the rank is allotted by the agency conducting the test. The prospectus describes no JMI scorecard: what a candidate keeps of the paper is the carbon copy of the O.M.R.

Scores you need

Cutoff

The mark that closed each category is printed on the face of the list itself, on a page headed "Category-wise cut-off score" that sits ahead of the roll numbers. The first list for B.B.A., B.Com. (Hons) and B.A. (Hons) Human Resource Management closed B.B.A. at 66.0 in the General category, 64.5 for Jamia internal students, 62.75 for the Muslim category, 61.5 for Muslim women, 61.0 for candidates from Jammu and Kashmir, 59.5 for Muslim OBC/ST and 47.75 for persons with disabilities. The first M.B.A. list runs from 111.25 in the General category down through 103.25 for the Muslim category, 101.25 for Muslim OBC/ST, 98.75 for Muslim women, 86.75 for Jammu and Kashmir and 72.25 for persons with disabilities to 54.75 for Kashmiri migrants.

A CUET programme carries the same table on the normalised score, printed to five decimal places: the first list for B.A. (Hons) Hindi closed at 172.43727 in the General category and at 49.01601 for persons with disabilities. Where a national rank decides the seat the column changes its name: the B.Tech fifth list is headed "Category-wise cut-off rank" and closed Computer Engineering at a JEE Main rank of 59029.0 in the Muslim category. Each figure belongs to one list of one programme, and every later list drawn from the waiting list in order of merit prints a figure of its own.

What the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27 does set out are floors and discretions. The seat numbers it prints are "only indicative of the maximum intake capacity" of a programme, and the number finally admitted "shall depend on the minimum benchmark of Program in the Entrance Test/Interview etc." Less than 30% in a descriptive part ends a candidature before the interview stage, and the university may decline to run a self-financed programme where the shortlisted, selected or admitted students number less than 50% of its seats.

Getting a seat

Counselling and seat allotment

Admission formalities happen at the department that teaches the programme, not at a counselling desk. Each selection list names the faculty, department or centre where a selected candidate reports and the dates for reporting, after which come the waiting lists and, where seats stay empty, spot registration. BDS is the exception: the JMI University Prospectus 2026-27 leaves it to the Medical Counselling Cell of the D.G.H.S. on NEET-2026 merit, promises to publicise any vacancies MCC transfers back to JMI, and makes an admitted BDS student execute a bond of Rs 3,00,000 that falls due only on surrendering the seat in violation of MCC rules after joining, discontinuing in the first or second year, or having the admission cancelled for misconduct or shortage of attendance.

For interview programmes, the prospectus calls four or five times the seats of each reservation category, and a candidate called in one category can be selected in that category or a lower-priority one only: its own example is a Muslim-category applicant called in the General category, who may be offered a General or a Muslim seat, while one called in the Muslim category can be offered a Muslim seat alone. Where a programme code holds several courses or branches, allotment follows the preferences in the form; upgrading means taking the allotted seat and filling an upgradation form at admission, and no downgrade is allowed.

Seats are reserved on the minority-institution pattern:

Spot registration was done in person. The third notice for offline spot registration, which the 2026-27 notice list dates 10 August 2026, was open only to candidates whose roll number was on a programme's declared waiting list and to those who had been offered a seat but missed taking admission. They had to come physically to the auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology with the downloaded JMI admission form or admit card, seats went "strictly as per the merit among the spot registered candidates only", and a candidate who failed to register within the schedule was not considered further.

Where it is accepted

Participating institutes

Only Jamia Millia Islamia uses these tests, and only for its own faculties, departments and centres in New Delhi. Its distance programmes, its schools and its Balak Mata Centres run on separate prospectuses listed on the JMI prospectus page, and the University Prospectus 2026-27 leaves the Ph.D. admission test to a separate Ph.D. bulletin.
