National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate)

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), or NEET (UG), is the single entrance examination for undergraduate medical admission in India. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts it. A qualifying rank opens admission to MBBS and BDS seats, to AYUSH courses such as BAMS, BUMS, BSMS and BHMS, to BSc Nursing, and to veterinary science (BVSc), at both government and private colleges.

NEET (UG) replaced the earlier patchwork of separate medical entrance tests, among them the All India Pre-Medical Test, several state common entrance tests, and the standalone exams once run by AIIMS and JIPMER. Section 14 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 provides for a common and uniform NEET for admission to undergraduate medical courses across all medical institutions, so AIIMS and JIPMER now admit through the same test.

The exam sits at the undergraduate level and is held once a year in a single shift. It runs in pen-and-paper (offline) mode, with candidates marking answers on an OMR sheet, and a move to computer-based testing has been announced. The paper covers Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) from the Class 11 and 12 syllabus, and is offered in English, Hindi and eleven regional languages.
