AIIMS Bhubaneswar is the Institute of National Importance that anchors modern tertiary medicine for Odisha and much of eastern India, and in the NIRF 2025 medical ranking it holds the 14th position with a score of 64.31. It opened its first MBBS batch in 2012 as one of the six second-generation AIIMS raised under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, and today its teaching hospital and lecture halls sit on a single campus at Sijua on the western edge of the state capital. If you are weighing a seat here, the questions that actually decide things are narrow: how many MBBS places exist, what they cost, which counselling route fills them, and how far this AIIMS has climbed. This page answers each from the institute's own records and the government counselling data.

Overview

The institute is a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and its own introduction page sets out the sequence: a foundation stone in 2003 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, then the institute constituted by ordinance in 2012, the year its first MBBS students arrived. Because the Sijua campus and its hospital were raised together in this century rather than inherited from an older college, the wards, diagnostic blocks and lecture halls share one purpose-planned site instead of a patchwork grown across decades.

Its defining feature in the region is the job it does as the referral ceiling for Odisha. Patients whom the district and state medical colleges cannot manage are sent here, so an undergraduate on these wards meets the advanced and late-stage disease that a smaller hospital seldom admits. The institute runs its own emergency, trauma and super-specialty services and absorbs much of the state's tertiary overflow in cardiology, neurosciences, oncology and nephrology, and that clinical exposure, more than any building, is what a medical student actually comes here for.

Courses & Fees

The flagship programme is the MBBS, and around it AIIMS Bhubaneswar runs postgraduate MD and MS degrees, super-specialty DM and MCh courses, BSc (Hons) and MSc Nursing, and a PhD programme, all listed on the institute's academic pages. The MBBS spans four and a half years of pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical teaching, followed by a compulsory one-year rotating internship before a graduate can register to practise.

Fees are the reason an AIIMS seat is prized far beyond the ranking. At the 2025 admission round, the institute asked incoming MBBS students for a demand draft of Rs 5,856 in favour of the AIIMS Bhubaneswar Academic Fund, as set out in its official admission instructions. That single figure covers the academic charges due at joining; hostel accommodation is mandatory and its rent, along with mess dues, is billed separately by the residence office. There is no tuition in the sense a private medical college uses the word, which is why the cost of the entire degree here stays a small fraction of one year's fee at a self-financed institution.

Admissions

Every MBBS place at AIIMS Bhubaneswar is filled through NEET-UG, and the counselling is run centrally by the Medical Counselling Committee rather than the institute. Since the AIIMS network folded into common counselling, all of its undergraduate seats are treated as All India Quota and allotted through MCC's online rounds, so a candidate registers on the MCC portal, locks choices by rank and preference, and reports here only after an allotment letter is issued. There is no separate institute entrance test and no management or state quota to fall back on.

The postgraduate route is where applicants most often reach for the wrong exam. MD and MS seats here are filled through INI-CET, the common entrance the national institutes run under AIIMS New Delhi, and the super-specialty DM and MCh seats through INI-SS; a NEET-PG score does not admit anyone to an AIIMS residency. So the paper depends on the stage rather than the college, NEET-UG for the MBBS, INI-CET for a residency, INI-SS for a fellowship, and in each case the reporting itself is done in person at the Sijua campus with the original documents, the rank letter and the provisional allotment.

Cutoff

Because these seats sit in the All India Quota, the cutoff that binds is the closing All India Rank at which each category's final seat goes during MCC's rounds, and it surfaces on the MCC result after each round rather than being set in advance. As one of the eastern zone's most-wanted government seats, AIIMS Bhubaneswar sees its general-category places close among the sharper NEET-UG ranks, and they tighten again through the mop-up rounds as candidates who were holding better options let them go.

A rank that secured a seat one year can fall short the next when more top scorers list this AIIMS ahead of a home-state college, so the figure is worth reading as that year's outcome, not a standing bar. The category-wise closing ranks are published only in the MCC seat-allotment result, which is where a serious applicant tracks them round by round during counselling.

Placements

A medical college is not "placed" like an engineering or management campus, and the brochure figure to ignore here is a placement percentage. An AIIMS Bhubaneswar MBBS ends in the compulsory rotating internship on the institute's own wards, and from there the large majority of graduates sit NEET-PG or INI-CET for a residency rather than take a salaried job. What actually deserves weighing is how far the institute's own postgraduate ladder reaches.

That ladder is unusually complete for a college of this age: because AIIMS Bhubaneswar runs its own MD, MS, DM and MCh programmes, a graduate can stay on one campus from the first MBBS posting through a super-specialty fellowship, contesting each rung on INI-CET and INI-SS merit alongside applicants from everywhere else. The intern year that starts it carries real weight too, rotating through medicine, surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics and community medicine under supervision on a tertiary case-load few state colleges can put in front of a trainee.

Seat Matrix

AIIMS Bhubaneswar sanctions 125 MBBS seats, and because they are all offered under the All India Quota, the reservation split follows the central pattern rather than Odisha's state roster. The MCC final seat matrix for UG 2024 lists the institute under code 200504, and in that record its 125 places split into 49 open or general seats, 32 for OBC candidates and 18 for SC, with the EWS and ST shares and a handful of Persons-with-Benchmark-Disability places set out as their own line items that add into the same total.

In this matrix each Persons-with-Benchmark-Disability place appears as its own line rather than folded into a category count, which is why the rows above total exactly 125. For an applicant the point that matters is plainer still: 125 seats, every one national, with no home-state advantage to lean on.

Rankings

AIIMS Bhubaneswar's clearest external marker is its NIRF 2025 medical rank of 14, earned on an overall score of 64.31. Its strongest pillar is Graduation Outcomes at 81.61, with Teaching, Learning and Resources close behind at 81.27, the two measures that reward completion rates and a well-resourced teaching base; the pillar that holds it back is Research and Professional Practice at 39.60, where the older and larger institutes still pull well ahead.

The same institute also appears in the broader all-disciplines table, where the NIRF 2025 overall ranking places it 100th nationally with a score of 49.04. Read together, the two numbers tell a consistent story: this is a strong, still-maturing medical school whose teaching and outcomes already rate among the country's best while its research output is climbing from a younger base.

Departments

The academic structure spans pre-clinical, para-clinical, clinical and super-specialty departments deep enough that the same faculty teach the whole MBBS course and run the tertiary hospital in parallel. The pre-clinical base covers anatomy, physiology and biochemistry; the para-clinical block adds pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, forensic medicine and community medicine.

On the clinical side the departments span general medicine and surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, psychiatry, dermatology, anaesthesiology and radiodiagnosis. The super-specialty faculties, which also carry the DM and MCh teaching, include cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, urology, gastroenterology and burns and plastic surgery. For an undergraduate, that spread means the specialty postings during clinical years happen in-house rather than at an affiliated hospital elsewhere.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus is a single planned estate at Sijua that keeps the college, the teaching hospital and the residences inside one boundary rather than scattered across the city. That compactness earns its keep in the clinical years, when a student crosses between lecture blocks, laboratories and wards several times a day.

Beyond the hospital, the estate holds the central library, departmental laboratories, an auditorium for institute events, and sports and recreation space for residents. AIIMS Bhubaneswar has also extended its clinical reach with a satellite centre at Balasore for the northern districts of Odisha. The infrastructure reads as modern and consolidated, put up in one phase rather than accreted over decades.

Hostel

Hostel residence is compulsory for MBBS students at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, a point the institute states plainly in its admission instructions: incoming students are told to bring their belongings because on-campus stay is mandatory after admission. Rooms are allotted by the hostel warden, and residents are expected to dine in the hostel mess rather than cook independently.

The residence rules are strict and part of the joining formalities, covering room allotment, night attendance, visitor timings and an anti-ragging affidavit signed by both student and guardian under the UGC regulations. Rent and mess charges are billed by the residence office separately from the academic fund, so they should be budgeted on top of the joining fee. The practical effect is that a first-year student lives on campus from day one, inside the same boundary as the wards they will train in.

Faculty

AIIMS Bhubaneswar's faculty are appointed under the central AIIMS recruitment framework, across the pre-clinical, para-clinical, clinical and super-specialty departments, and their strength is the main input behind the institute's high NIRF Teaching, Learning and Resources score of 81.27. That pillar of the ranking weighs faculty numbers, the student-to-teacher ratio and faculty qualifications, so a score in the low eighties signals a well-staffed teaching base for a school of this age.

Faculty here carry a triple load of teaching, tertiary clinical service and research, which is why the same names that run the super-specialty units also supervise MD, MS and DM candidates. The current published faculty count and department-wise staffing are maintained on the institute's own administration pages and in its NIRF submission; for exact numbers by department, those official records are the ones to consult, since they are revised as posts are filled.

Notable Alumni

Its first MBBS class entered in 2012, so the oldest graduates are only now moving from residency into consultant and faculty posts. No independently documented roll of distinguished alumni exists yet, and this page names a graduate only once their record can be checked against a dependable public source, so for the moment it carries none.

That is the expected position for a second-generation AIIMS, not a shortfall. At this stage the institute's reputation rests on the strength of its current teaching and hospital work rather than on a long line of famous names it has not had the years to produce.

News & Articles

The institute publishes its own notices, tenders, recruitment advertisements and event coverage through the news and press sections of its official website, and these are the primary record for anything current, from senior-resident vacancies to departmental workshops and CME programmes. Admission-related updates, including reporting schedules and document checklists, are posted there ahead of each counselling cycle.

We do not reproduce time-sensitive notices on this page, because a recruitment date or a workshop listing goes stale quickly and the official site is where it stays accurate. For live announcements about admissions, hospital services or faculty recruitment, the institute's own notice board is the source to watch.

College Compare

The fair way to place AIIMS Bhubaneswar against another college is on what each one publishes, not on how it markets itself. On the national medical table its rank of 14 sits clear of every other college in Odisha, the state's private medical universities included, so within the state the real question is route: an All India Quota seat here, decided purely on NEET-UG merit, against the state-quota odds and the multi-year service bond a state government college usually attaches.

Against the older AIIMS at New Delhi or the next tier of central institutes, the split is cleaner. The long-established schools keep an edge in research depth and name recognition, while AIIMS Bhubaneswar already matches them on the near-nominal fee and on the teaching-and-outcome scores that carry its rank. Line those four things up, the NIRF pillars, the fee, the seat count and the counselling route, and the choice stops being a matter of brand.

Contact & Location

The institute's own admission sheet gives its postal address as Sijua, Post Dumuduma, Bhubaneswar, Odisha 751019, in the Khordha district on the western side of the state capital. The single-campus layout means the college, hospital and administration share that one address, reachable from the Bhubaneswar railway station and airport.

For admission, hospital or general queries, the institute's help desk is listed on its contact page at (0674) 2476789, with office and directorate email addresses on the same site. The city, state and district also appear in the facts panel on this page.
