All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, Bhopal

#25

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal is the Institute of National Importance that central India sends its most complicated cases to, and in the NIRF 2025 Medical ranking it holds rank 25. It admits 125 students a year into MBBS through a large teaching hospital, and every one of those seats is decided on a NEET-UG rank rather than on money or a home-state quota. Its charges are the nominal, centrally set figures the AIIMS name is known for, which is why nine in ten of its medical undergraduates travel in from outside Madhya Pradesh to hold a place. What the institute offers, and how a school-leaver or a working doctor gets in, is narrower and more checkable than a listing site suggests.

Overview

The institute is one of six All India Institutes of Medical Sciences that the central government raised outside Delhi under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the scheme meant to plant AIIMS-standard tertiary care in states that had none, and its institutional record dates its start to 2012, when its first academic department opened at Saket Nagar on a 170-acre city campus. As an Institute of National Importance under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, it grants its own MBBS, postgraduate and doctoral degrees instead of affiliating to a Madhya Pradesh university.

What sets it apart in its region is the load its hospital carries. Its NIRF 2025 data submission records a hospital of 1,457 beds running at an average daily occupancy of 1,375, drawing an average OPD attendance of 5,002 through the 2023 calendar year, so a student on these wards meets the volume and the late-stage disease a district hospital rarely admits. For a college that took its first MBBS class barely more than a decade ago, that patient base, more than any single building, is why it can teach the full range of clinical medicine.

Courses & Fees

Medicine is the anchor, and AIIMS Bhopal builds a wide teaching ladder around it, from allied-health courses to super-specialty fellowships.

Fees are where an AIIMS place separates itself from a private medical seat, and the institute's own NIRF 2025 data submission shows how little the money screens who gets in: of its 598 MBBS students, 56 are from within Madhya Pradesh and 542 from outside the state, so almost the whole class has crossed a state line for the seat. As a centrally funded Institute of National Importance, AIIMS Bhopal charges nominal government fees rather than the several lakh a self-financed college asks. It does not post one consolidated MBBS fee on its public pages, so the exact head-wise amount for a joining year should be taken from its online admission portal and the counselling bulletin, not from an aggregator's fee table.

Admissions

NEET-UG is the one gate to an MBBS seat here, and nothing else opens it. Since the AIIMS network was folded into the shared medical counselling, all of its undergraduate seats became All India Quota places, so allotment runs end to end through the Medical Counselling Committee: a candidate registers on the MCC portal, locks a rank-ordered choice list, and reports at Saket Nagar only after the portal issues a written allotment. There is no separate institute exam, no management seat and no Madhya Pradesh domicile channel to lean on, which is exactly why the class comes overwhelmingly from outside the state.

The postgraduate doors open on different papers, and this is where applicants most often bring the wrong scorecard. A residency in MD, MS or MDS is allotted on INI-CET, the paper AIIMS Delhi runs for the whole INI network, and the DM and MCh super-specialty places on a separate exam, INI-SS. A NEET-PG rank, useful at most state and private colleges, opens nothing at an AIIMS. The nursing, allied-health and doctoral courses each admit on their own institute tests. The rule worth holding is that the entrance depends on the stage of training a candidate is stepping into, not on the fact that the letters AIIMS sit over the door.

Cutoff

AIIMS Bhopal has no advertised cutoff mark, and treating one number as its bar is the commonest mistake made about getting in. The thing that admits you is your position in the NEET-UG national order of merit; the figure people call a cutoff is really just how far down that order the last person accepted in your category got in a particular MCC counselling round, and it exists only once that round has finished running. Because Bhopal sits a little below the founding AIIMS and the strongest of the newer ones on the medical table, its general-category seats tend to close at slightly softer ranks than those institutes, though still among the sharper NEET-UG scores in the country, and they loosen further through the mop-up rounds as higher scorers upgrade or step away. Any Bhopal cutoff carried over from a past year is a guess; the trustworthy figure is this cycle's own MCC seat-allotment result, read one round and one category at a time.

Placements

Holding a placement percentage up to Bhopal measures the wrong thing, because medicine has no campus hiring season and an MBBS does not end in a recruiter's offer the way an engineering degree can. An MBBS here closes not in a hiring queue but in a year of compulsory rotating internship on the institute's wards, after which most graduates sit an entrance again for a residency rather than take a salaried post. The institute's NIRF 2025 data submission puts the split on record: of the 94 who completed the course in 2022-23, 57 went on to higher study and 37 were recorded as placed at a median of Rs 14,50,000, and of the two batches before it, the 98 who graduated in 2020-21 leaned heavily the same way, while the 91 of 2021-22 split almost evenly between a residency and a first post.

The salary figures that carry more weight arrive later, with the postgraduate leavers. The same filing records the median pay of its three-year MD and MS residents climbing from Rs 12,00,000 for the 2021-22 batch to Rs 18,00,000 in 2022-23 and Rs 21,00,000 in 2023-24. Read against the intake, the honest signal for a college this young is not a first pay cheque but the depth of training a graduate can reach next, and Bhopal lets an MBBS contest the institute's own MD, MS, DM and MCh seats without leaving the campus.

Seat Matrix

Every one of Bhopal's 125 MBBS places is an All India Quota seat, so the reservation split comes off the Union template rather than a Madhya Pradesh roster. The MCC final seat matrix for the 2024 undergraduate round files the institute under code 200503, where its 125 seats break down as 47 open, 32 OBC, 18 SC, 12 EWS and 9 ST, with a small share of places inside each category, seven in all, ring-fenced for candidates with benchmark disabilities.

Read down the table and the reserved lines fall where the central roster sets them, with the Open and OBC counts giving an applicant the widest routes in. Because those shares are refreshed for each admission cycle, the current MCC matrix is the version to trust, not a figure held over from a previous year.

Rankings

On the one external yardstick that ranks it, the NIRF 2025 Medical list, AIIMS Bhopal comes in at 25 on an overall score of 60.15. Read across the five parameters on that ranking table, the profile is a young institute that already teaches well but is still building its research name: Teaching, Learning and Resources at 81.00 is comfortably its strongest pillar, Graduation Outcomes sits at 77.58, and an Outreach and Inclusivity score of 70.03 is unusually high for a college of its age. The two figures pulling the total down are Research and Professional Practice at 34.14 and Perception at 30.87.

Teaching, Learning and Resources81.00
Graduation Outcomes77.58
Outreach and Inclusivity70.03
Research and Professional Practice34.14
Perception30.87

That research score is the honest gap, and it is one the institute is visibly working at: its data submission logs 168 sponsored projects funded by 32 agencies in 2023-24, up from 85 projects two years earlier, so the parameter holding it back today is the one most likely to move next.

Departments

Teaching runs across the four tiers a full AIIMS carries, pre-clinical, para-clinical, clinical and super-specialty, and the institute's courses list shows the spread is wide for a college of its age. Its MD seats span the major clinical and laboratory disciplines, from Anatomy and Anaesthesiology to Emergency Medicine, and the surgical side carries MS programmes in General Surgery, Orthopaedics and ENT.

Above them sit the super-specialty faculties that run the DM and MCh teaching, in fields such as Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Urology. Bhopal also reaches past the standard medical roster: it runs a dental wing with MDS seats in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Public Health Dentistry, a Nursing College, and a bank of allied-health courses in areas like Optometry, Dialysis Therapy and Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology, so an undergraduate here trains alongside a broader mix of health disciplines than a pure medical college offers.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The clinical plant is the institute's real asset. Its teaching hospital carries 1,457 beds and ran at an average of 1,375 filled on any given day in 2023, drawing an average of 5,002 outpatients a day over the year, the NIRF 2025 data submission records, which is the volume that lets a college barely past its first decade teach super-specialty medicine at all. The whole of it sits on one planned campus at Saket Nagar rather than a patchwork of older buildings, so a student crosses between lecture halls, laboratories and wards inside a single boundary.

Around the hospital the institute runs a trauma centre, a telemedicine service and an app-based OPD registration, listed on its official site. Its NIRF submission adds that lifts and ramps reach more than 80 per cent of its buildings, with wheelchair transport and adapted toilets for students who need them.

Hostel

Residence on campus is close to non-negotiable for a medical student here, because the clinical years and the internship put a trainee on the wards at all hours, and AIIMS Bhopal houses its students inside the campus. The institute assigns rooms itself rather than leaving students to the local rental market, and it charges rent and mess dues apart from the academic account, so those costs belong on top of the joining fee in any budget. It publishes no fixed hostel rate on its public pages and provides accommodation as places come free, so the reliable move is to settle the current charge and the room allotment with the academic section once admitted, rather than count on a room arriving with the seat.

Faculty

The size of the teaching bench is one of the clearer signs that AIIMS Bhopal has grown past its founding phase. Its NIRF 2025 data submission enters 256 faculty members, and that headcount is the base under its Teaching, Learning and Resources score of 81.00 that carries the ranking. A faculty base that large is what a trainee feels day to day: across most departments there are enough consultants and senior residents that neither an undergraduate on the wards nor a resident writing up a thesis is left waiting on one teacher's time.

The same staff carry a heavy postgraduate and doctoral load. Counted in the same return are 297 residents training for an MD, MS or DNB and 59 full-time PhD scholars, which in practice means the consultant marking an undergraduate's script often also heads a referral clinic and steers a research group.

Notable Alumni

AIIMS Bhopal admitted its first MBBS students only in 2012 and, per its institutional record, did not begin postgraduate teaching until 2017, so its earliest graduates are still moving from residency into consultant and faculty roles. Rather than lift names off an unverified list, the honest position is that its alumni body is early in its arc, its members spreading into practice, postgraduate seats and research across the country. A public roll of distinguished graduates for this institute has not had the years to form, which is the normal place for a second-generation AIIMS to stand rather than a gap to paper over.

News & Articles

Live updates from AIIMS Bhopal, its tenders, recruitment rounds, press notes and event listings, are published on the news panels of its official website, and that page stays the accurate record for anything current, including its frequent faculty and senior-resident hiring. Those dated notices go stale within weeks, so the institute's own board is where they read correctly. What the board does not decide is MBBS admission: that follows the MCC counselling schedule set nationally, so a medical aspirant tracks the counselling portal rather than the institute's notices.

College Compare

Set inside the AIIMS family, Bhopal reads as a solid central-India institute rather than a rival to the original. The founding AIIMS in New Delhi is far ahead on the national medical table, and among the six institutes the first PMSSY phase created, Bhopal's rank of 25 leaves it in the middle of that group. Between one AIIMS and another a NEET-UG candidate is rarely choosing on fee or entry route, which are near-identical across the system; the real variables are location, the case mix a hospital sees and how far each institute has matured.

Inside Madhya Pradesh the picture is plainer. Bhopal's national rank puts it above the state's other medical colleges, so for a local student the decision is really about which kind of seat to chase: an AIIMS place won purely on an all-India NEET-UG rank, with no home-state weighting and no compulsory service tie, or a state-college seat where domicile reservation improves the odds but a service bond often follows the degree.

Contact & Location

The campus is at Saket Nagar, in the south of Bhopal at PIN 462020 per its institutional record, and one boundary holds all of it: the medical college, the tertiary-care hospital and the administrative offices share the address.

No admission query is settled at a campus desk here, since every MBBS seat is filled from the national MCC pool rather than by the institute, which makes the MCC the authority to approach. And remember which kind of building you are walking into: it runs as a hospital first, and the lecture theatres and administrative rooms keep schedules of their own, unrelated to when the OPD opens.
