About XAT

XAT is one paper run on two clocks, and only part of it reaches the percentile that institutes screen on. General Knowledge is marked, carries no negative marking, and is kept out of the percentile and the cutoff entirely. Registration for XAT 2027 is open, the test is in January, and the part of the paper a candidate chooses to leave blank has a price of its own.

XLRI Jamshedpur writes and conducts XAT on behalf of the XAMI member schools, and the paper it sets is a two-part computer-based test taken in a single slot on one afternoon. XLRI presents that single slot as what ensures fairness and no normalization bias, and pairs it with two rules that shape how the paper is attempted: there are no sectional time limits inside Part 1, and a candidate may move between its sections in any order, per the XAT 2027 official site.

What the score buys is narrower than it looks. Registering for XAT does not make a candidate an applicant anywhere, including at XLRI: the XAT 2027 FAQs state that XAT is a common entrance test, that each participating institute runs its own selection process and criteria, and that a candidate must apply separately for the XLRI programmes they want. Everything downstream of the score, the shortlist, the interview and the seat, belongs to the institute, not to the exam.

That split is written into XLRI's own documents rather than left implied. Its XAT 2025 bulletin states plainly that XLRI does not verify the quality of the degrees or programmes offered by other institutions that use XAT scores, that each institution independently decides the weightages it assigns to the different test components, and that XLRI has no role in those institutions' selection processes. A XAT score is a common currency; what it is worth is set separately by each place that accepts it.

Important dates

The XAT 2027 calendar spans two years, and only one stage in it is provisional. The test is dated to the day and timed to the hour; the admit card is the only line XLRI marks tentative.

The same window appears in a document written for institutes rather than candidates, which is useful because it is the version XLRI commits to in writing to third parties: the Terms and Modalities for Associate Membership: XAT 2027 records that the XAT 2027 registration process commenced on 15 July 2026 and will conclude on 06 December 2026, and that the test will be conducted on Sunday, January 3, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

One date that never appears on a countdown is the one that closes the file. In the XAT 2025 cycle the scorecard was not a permanent download: XLRI's XAT 2025 bulletin required candidates to download it from the official site by March 31, 2025, after which the window shut. No equivalent deadline has been published for the cycle now under way, so the safe reading is that the scorecard is collected as soon as it appears rather than when an institute asks for it.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

The degree condition is the one most candidates have already met, and it is written to keep almost nobody out. The XAT 2027 FAQs ask for a recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years' duration or its equivalent, in any discipline, and admit candidates who are still to sit their final examinations. XLRI's own XAT eligibility note adds the three limits that are absent: there is no age limit, no cap on attempts, and no minimum percentage in graduation.

The final-year route carries a completion deadline, and XLRI's FAQ page states it twice without agreeing with itself. The eligibility answer gives June 12, 2027 as the date by which a final-year candidate must appear for their examinations; a separate answer further down the same XAT 2027 FAQs page gives June 11, 2027. The two are a day apart, which matters only to a candidate whose university calendar falls exactly there, and that candidate should confirm the date with the XLRI admissions office rather than pick the kinder of the two.

Nationality decides which test a candidate sits at all. The XAT 2027 FAQs state that all Indian candidates must appear for XAT 2027, and that NRI, Foreign, OCI and PIO candidates may instead apply through GMAT. The XAT 2027 registration page sets out the one partial exemption open to Indian candidates: they may apply through GMAT or GRE for PGDM (GM) and for the XLRI PGDM (LSCM) double-masters pathway with Rutgers Business School, while an NRI, Foreign, PIO or OCI candidate may apply through GMAT for all of the programmes.

Work experience is not an eligibility condition, but XAT's application form defines it narrowly enough that candidates routinely overstate it. The XAT 2027 FAQs count only full-time work done after graduation, exclude internships and articleships outright, and exclude anything done before the degree was completed. The same page asks candidates to classify that experience as structured sector, unstructured sector or self-employed, and puts salary paid in cash against a valid experience certificate in the unstructured category.

Two conditions sit outside the checklist. XAT applies no reservation of its own: XLRI's XAT eligibility note states that scores are calculated to a single standard and are not adjusted by category, and that reservation, where it exists, belongs to the institutes a candidate later applies to. And candidature is provisional throughout, with the XAT 2026 exam instructions warning that a candidate found not to meet the eligibility criteria is liable to be rejected at a later stage.

Step by step

Application process and fee

The form is a single sitting that can be paused. The XAT 2027 registration page walks through 11 steps, from the save-and-next facility that holds a partially filled form, through academic and work-experience details, the XLRI programme preference, the test-city choice and the photograph and signature upload, to the preview tab and payment. Two of them close a door behind them: applicant details cannot be edited once the form is submitted after payment, and a name spelt differently from the certificates and identity proof may disqualify the candidature.

The fee is charged in layers rather than as one figure, and the layer most candidates miss is the per-programme charge on top of the test.

One programme choice costs nothing extra by design. The XAT 2027 FAQs confirm that selecting PGDM (BM) puts a candidate in consideration for both the Jamshedpur and the Delhi-NCR campuses, with no separate application and no additional fee. Every payment made for XAT and XLRI registration is non-refundable, as the XAT associate institutes page states.

The headline fee has drifted upward across cycles, and the extras have not. XLRI charged Rs. 2200 for XAT registration in the 2025 cycle, with the same Rs. 200 per XLRI programme and Rs. 2500 for the Indian GMAT or GRE route to PGDM (GM), per its XAT 2025 bulletin. The per-programme charge and the fee for NRI and foreign-national candidates applying through GMAT are the two that have stayed where they were.

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

Admit cards for XAT 2027 can be downloaded from the official site from 20th December 2026, a date the XAT 2027 FAQs mark tentative. Nothing else is issued: the admit card and an original photo identity document are what a candidate carries in, and a request to change the allotted test centre will not be considered, per the XAT 2026 exam instructions.

The venue rules XLRI published for XAT 2026 are stricter than most candidates expect, and the list is worth reading before packing. Mobile phones, electronic and Bluetooth devices, books and papers, calculators, ornaments, metallic items, electronic keys, and both analog and digital or smart watches are not allowed; a transparent water bottle, pen or pencil, shoes, belt, wallet, cash or cards, religious items and normal keys are. Masks are listed as not allowed. Rough sheets are provided and the pen is not, biometric details are captured at the centre on exam day, frisking at entry is mandatory, and the admit card and rough sheets are handed back to the invigilator at the end, per the XAT 2026 exam instructions.

One clock time decides whether a candidate sits the paper at all. The same XAT 2026 exam instructions closed the gate at 01:50 PM, with no entry after it, and allowed login to the terminal 10 minutes before the exam began so that the on-screen instructions could be read. Accepted photo identity documents are the Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card, a valid college ID, passport, driving licence or employee ID card, and a candidate whose photograph does not match should carry a recent passport-size print. XLRI has not published the corresponding document for the cycle now under way, so these are the XAT 2026 rules and the admit card is the thing to read them against.

Leaving early is not an option, and neither is a technical failure. The XAT 2026 exam instructions cancel the candidature of anyone who leaves the lab before the full 180 minutes are up, other than on medical grounds raised with the invigilator, and require the attendance sheet to be signed. The XAT 2027 FAQs cover the other direction: in the event of a technical glitch the candidate is moved to another terminal without losing any time.

Candidates with a disability get compensatory time, and XLRI states the arithmetic rather than the principle. PwD candidates receive an additional 20 minutes for every hour, as XLRI's XAT syllabus and pattern note records. The XAT 2026 exam instructions turn that into the submission windows it produces: Part 1 between 170 and roughly 226.67 minutes, Part 2 between 10 and 13.33 minutes, with the lab exit falling between 180 and 240 minutes depending on when the paper is finished.

Structure

Exam pattern

XAT is one 180-minute test split into two timed parts, and the clock runs one way through them. Inside Part 1 the three sections can be shuffled at will, but when its 170 minutes are up Part 1 locks itself and the candidate is moved on to Part 2, as the XAT 2026 exam instructions set out. Each multiple-choice question offers five options with one correct answer, and the on-screen calculator sits in the top-right corner of the Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation section.

The marking scheme prices three different actions rather than two, and the third is the one candidates underestimate. Each question carries 1 mark, each wrong answer in Part 1 costs 0.25 marks, and a candidate may leave up to 8 questions unattempted at no cost; from the ninth unattempted question onward, each one costs a further 0.10 marks, per XLRI's XAT syllabus and pattern note and the XAT 2026 exam instructions. Both of those documents describe XAT 2026. The pattern table XLRI publishes for the current cycle on the XAT 2027 official site sets out the sections, the question counts and the two clocks and attaches no marks to any of them, so the figures above are XLRI's most recent published statement of how the paper is scored.

A skip beyond the free allowance is cheaper than a wrong answer, but it is not free, and against a paper of 95 questions the allowance covers only a small fraction of it, as that same XAT 2027 official site pattern table shows.

General Knowledge is scored on a different basis again, and what happens to that score depends entirely on where the candidate is applying. The GK section carries no negative marking, as the XAT 2026 exam instructions state; it will not contribute to a candidate's overall percentile or cutoff score, in the words of XLRI's XAT 2025 pattern and marking note; and the scores from it are exclusively utilised by XLRI for its final selection process, per the XAT 2026 overview. For a candidate targeting any other school, GK is marked and then set aside; for a candidate targeting XLRI, it is read after the percentile has already done its work.

What to study

Syllabus

XLRI publishes a section-wise description of what each part of the paper asks rather than a topic list with weights. Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning covers critical and analytical reasoning, reading comprehension that can include poems and cartoons as well as passages, vocabulary, English grammar, para jumbles and cloze tests. Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation assumes a foundational grounding in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and modern maths, with data interpretation questions asking for clear reading, summarisation and analysis, per the XAT 2027 official site.

General Knowledge is the one section whose internal split XLRI actually publishes: of the 20 GK questions, 08 are on static GK and the remaining 12 on current affairs, according to the same XAT 2027 official site. XLRI's XAT syllabus and pattern note fills in the kind of material behind those labels, naming economy, politics, business, sports, awards, science, world events and the Constitution of India.

Decision Making has no syllabus, and that is the point of it. The XAT 2027 official site describes the section as presenting scenarios drawn from both personal and professional lives, requiring critical thinking, problem-solving skills and prioritisation to make informed decisions, and XLRI's note on the Decision Making section calls it the most distinctive feature of the paper. That note is explicit that the options will often all look reasonable and that the task is to find the one best aligned with sound management principles and ethical considerations, so there is nothing to memorise and no formula to apply.

How to prepare

Preparation and books

The most useful free material for XAT comes from XLRI itself and sits in the footer of every page of the exam site. Full XAT question papers are published for 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 under Exam resources on the XAT 2027 official site. Seven complete papers, then, including the Decision Making caselets, which are the part of XAT that has no counterpart elsewhere in the paper. It is also where the supply stops: no paper later than 2024 has been added to that list.

Two features of the marking scheme convert directly into preparation decisions rather than reading lists. Part 2 runs on its own 10-minute clock, as the pattern table on the XAT 2027 official site shows, and GK carries no negative marking, per the XAT 2026 exam instructions, so nothing is lost by answering every GK question; and because the penalty for leaving Part 1 questions blank begins at the ninth skip, a candidate needs a settled view of which questions they will attempt rather than a fixed section order. XLRI's own note on the Decision Making section asks candidates to take the time to fully understand the scenario and to weigh the ethical implications alongside the practical outcomes, which is a habit that only builds on real caselets.

Where it is held

Exam centres

A candidate does not pick a test city for XAT; they name six and then wait. The XAT 2027 registration page has candidates choose 6 preferred test cities while filling the form, advises choosing one close to their own city of residence, and keeps the final authority to allot the test city with XLRI. The exam runs in 100+ test cities, as the XAT 2027 official site puts it. Once a centre is allotted there is no appeal: the XAT 2026 exam instructions state that a request to change the test centre will not be considered and that a candidate must go only to the allocated centre.

The binding list for this cycle is the one XLRI put in writing for the institutes that buy the scores. The Terms and Modalities for Associate Membership: XAT 2027 names the XAT 2027 test cities one by one, and the searchable city widget on the XAT 2027 official site offers the same set. Anyone returning from an earlier attempt should read it rather than assume it: Baddi, Chikkaballapur, Hisar and Tiruvallur were all centres in the cycle covered by the XAT 2025 bulletin, and not one of the four is named for XAT 2027.

After the exam

Answer key

A XAT candidate never sees the questions again. There is no stage at which the paper comes back for scrutiny: the XAT 2027 FAQs, which answer questions on the admit card, the duration, the result and the exam interface, run from the interface straight to the result without one, and neither the XAT 2027 registration page nor the Terms and Modalities for Associate Membership: XAT 2027 opens a window for arguing with how a question was marked. The old papers XLRI does publish come without their answers, and the XAT 2024 question paper shows why: it is a raw export from the test engine, and the engine's own header field on it records that the answer key was not shared. The scorecard is the whole of what comes back.

Result and scorecard

XLRI commits to an interval and not to a date. The XAT 2027 FAQs say only that the results will be announced approximately three weeks after the exam, and the cycle now under way carries no published scorecard release date at all.

The previous cycle shows what that window has looked like in practice. XLRI's XAT 2025 cutoff release records that the XAT 2025 scorecards were released on January 17, 2025, against a test held on January 05, 2025 per the XAT 2025 bulletin, and that XLRI announced its programme cutoffs following that release. Whether this cycle lands nearer that or nearer the three weeks the FAQ describes is not something XLRI has committed to.

Scores reach institutes on their own schedule, separate from the candidate's. The Terms and Modalities for Associate Membership: XAT 2027 commits XLRI to sharing XAT scores with associate member institutes by the end of January, with individual scorecards made available to candidates as well, and adds a data rule candidates rarely see: XLRI shares a candidate's phone number only with the institutes that candidate has actually applied to.

Cutoff

XLRI announces its own interview thresholds in a press release, programme by programme, once that cycle's scorecards have gone out, and it did exactly that for XAT 2025 following the release of the scorecards on January 17, 2025, per its XAT 2025 cutoff release. Those numbers belong to XLRI and not to XAT. Every other institute reading the score fixes and announces its own bar on its own calendar, which is why the tables below carry one school's name and a closed cycle's date, and why they are a record rather than a target.

The Human Resource Management thresholds are set independently of the Business Management ones, and they are shaped differently: the quantitative floor sits lower and the verbal floor higher in every category. The difference is between two programmes, not between two papers.

Both tables are floors on four numbers at once, not on one. A candidate clears the call only by meeting the overall percentile and each sectional percentile, so a strong total carried by one section does not substitute for a weak one. XLRI names three things that move these numbers between cycles: how many candidates sat the paper, how difficult that year's paper was, and how many seats the programme has, per its XAT 2025 cutoff release. That release also puts the scale of the round in context, with roughly 4000 to 4500 candidates expected to be interviewed across XLRI's programmes and campuses for the 2025-2026 admissions cycle.

Counselling and seat allotment

The only thing the test hands forward is an ID. The Terms and Modalities for Associate Membership: XAT 2027 requires a candidate seeking admission to an associate member institute to register separately with that institute and provide their XAT ID, and that is the whole of the machinery standing between a score and a seat. Every application after the test is a fresh one, made to a school, in that school's own window.

What follows is therefore not one process but as many processes as the candidate applies to. XLRI's XAT 2025 bulletin is unambiguous that each institution independently decides the weightages assigned to the different test components, that candidates should follow each institution's own registration procedure, and that XLRI plays no part in those selections. The XAT associate institutes page adds the practical consequence: the scorecard has to be downloaded and preserved by the candidate, because it is what each of those separate applications is built on.

Participating institutes

The list of schools that read a XAT score has two tiers with different relationships to the exam. XAMI members are the association XLRI conducts the test for; associate institutes buy access to the scores. The XAT associate institutes page names both groups school by school, each entry carrying the institute's city, admissions email and website, and the Terms and Modalities for Associate Membership: XAT 2027 commits XLRI to publishing the names of all associate member institutes there. The headline XLRI attaches to that reach is 250+ B-Schools, on the XAT 2027 official site; the named directory is the part a candidate can check a particular school against.

Associate membership is a commercial arrangement, and the terms are public. An institute pays Rs. 1,45,140 for annual membership inclusive of GST, Rs. 2,10,040 for two years or for a group of institutes for one year, or Rs. 4,20,080 for five years, per the XAT 2027 associate membership participation form. What it buys is a database of candidate profiles carrying name, XAT ID, date of birth, address, email and scores, which XLRI's XAT associate membership page says lets member institutes contact candidates directly. Appearing on that list therefore means an institute has paid for the scores, which is a different thing from the exam vouching for it. XLRI's XAT 2025 bulletin says as much: it does not verify the quality of the degrees or programmes those institutions offer.
