Alagappa Government Arts College, Karaikudi
Alagappa Government Arts College is a Tamil Nadu government college at Iluppakudi village in Karaikudi taluk, and it is neither Alagappa University nor Alagappa Chettiar Government College of Engineering and Technology, two separately run institutions carrying the same founder's name in the same town. For 2026-2027 it has put up a ranked list for every one of its undergraduate courses with the cut-off mark printed beside each name. It also filed a return for the 2026 national ranking that answers "NO" to whether it holds a valid accreditation, while the banner across its own homepage still advertises a grade.
Overview
The college opened on 11th August 1947, the year of independence, founded by the philanthropist Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar to give the educationally backward people of erstwhile Ramnad District higher education at an affordable cost.
Ownership and awarding authority changed later, in that order. The college started as a private college affiliated to the University of Madras, came under the Government of Tamilnadu in 1985 under the Private Colleges Act 1976, was affiliated during that period to Madurai Kamaraj University, and joined Alagappa University consequent to its establishment at Karaikudi in 2003-04. Affiliating to the university in 2003-04 changed who awards the degree, not who runs the college, and the two remain distinct institutions with distinct admissions. Alagappa University itself became an affiliating university in 2002, which is when the arrangement became possible at all.
The college holds 2(f) and 12(B) recognition under the UGC Act 1956 and was promoted to Grade 1 by the Government of Tamilnadu in 2007-08, and the same year it opened a second shift for seven of its courses, which is why several subjects appear twice in the tables below.
Two thirds of the undergraduate roll is female. The data the college filed for the 2026 national ranking records 1093 male and 2268 female undergraduates, and 130 male against 306 female postgraduates, every one of them from within the state.
Courses & Fees
Fourteen undergraduate programmes run here, seven of them across two shifts, and twelve postgraduate ones in a single shift. The affiliation years read as a history of the place: history, economics and commerce from the founding year, the laboratory sciences a year later, computing half a century on.

Only two of the fourteen undergraduate degrees are taught in Tamil medium, B.A. Tamil and B.A. History; the rest, the whole science and commerce block included, are English medium. At master's level M.A. Tamil is the only Tamil-medium option of the twelve.
Master's intakes run from 15 to 40 seats. The postgraduate table puts M.A. English and M.Sc. Botany at the top with 40 seats each, and M.Sc. Geology and M.Sc. Computer Science at the bottom with 15.
Nobody pays tuition out of pocket here; the state reimburses it in full, for the reason set out under Scholarships. What a family does pay is examination, association and special fees, printed only inside the scanned student handbook and on no web page, so ask the office for the current slip at admission rather than trusting a figure copied onto an aggregator.
Admissions
No entrance examination is written at either level. Asked by the ranking framework whether it admits students through a national or state level entrance exam, the college answers NO, and what replaces the exam is a state portal at each level. Undergraduate applications go to TNGASA, Tamil Nadu's online counselling for its government arts and science colleges; master's applications go to a second, separate portal, TNGASA-PG. A candidate who registers on the wrong one has registered for the wrong level.
Ranking and counselling stay with the college. Its undergraduate admission page carries a separate rank list for every course and shift under a committee chaired by the Principal, and its postgraduate admission page carries the same for each master's subject.
Reserved-category candidates are ranked on their own lists, published separately, and the sizes show where that route is crowded and where it is almost empty.
| Reserved category list, 2026-2027 | Candidates ranked |
|---|---|
| Sports | 710 |
| NCC | 199 |
| Differently abled | 103 |
| Ex-serviceman | 15 |
| Andaman and Nicobar | 7 |
| Security forces | 4 |
The differently abled list records each candidate's percentage of disability beside the aggregate mark, so ranking there is not on marks alone. And the Andaman and Nicobar route is the one nobody expects on a Sivaganga campus, however short its list.
Watch where the college posts a notice, though. The pop-up that opens over its homepage was carrying one live admission line when this page was compiled, the postgraduate one, with a button straight through to pg.tngasa.in and no undergraduate line beside it. The two admission pages are the steadier place to look through the admission months.
Cutoff
No closing mark is published for any seat here. Both admission pages set aside a Selection Cum Wait List column beside the rank lists, on every special category at undergraduate level and on every master's subject, and every link in that column is an empty placeholder. What is published instead is every ranked candidate with the mark that ranked them, so you can see where each queue starts and ends, but not where the seats ran out inside it.
Read the language lists on a different scale from the rest, and note that it is the course applied for, not the medium it is taught in, that puts a candidate on one scale or the other. The state's instruction booklet for the 2026 intake ranks B.A. Tamil Literature on the Tamil paper alone and B.A. English Literature on the English paper alone, each out of 100 marks, and every other bachelor's course on the remaining 4 subjects out of 400. A mark near the head of the English list is therefore not a weaker result than a mark near the head of the commerce list; they are counted out of different denominators.
| Course and shift, 2026-2027 | Ranked candidates | Mark at rank 1 | Mark at the last rank | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.A. Tamil, Shift I | 3749 | 98 | 0 | 48 |

| B.Sc. Physics, Shift II | 1167 | 378 | 171 | 40 |

| B.Sc. Mathematics, Shift II | 940 | 395 | 171 | 40 |
| B.Sc. Geology | 1301 | 378 | 171 | 40 |
Three of those last-rank cells read 0, and they are all language lists, so treat the bottom of the Tamil and English columns as the end of the queue rather than a mark anyone was admitted on.
The two Tamil lists also refuse to run straight down, which is why the rank-1 mark is not the top mark on them. The Shift I list falls from 98 at rank 1 to 35, jumps back to 99 at rank 53 and starts falling again, and the Shift II list breaks the same way at rank 37; nothing in either file labels the blocks or says what separates them. The highest Tamil mark published anywhere on the Shift I list is 99, not the 98 sitting at its head. Every other list in the table descends without a break.
Do not read the list lengths as counts of separate people either. A candidate names several branch choices and appears on every list that matches, so the same names recur: the applicant ranked 5th on the B.Sc. Chemistry list also holds 4th on the Shift I computer science list and 2nd on the Shift I mathematics list. What the lengths do measure is relative demand. The two longest queues are B.A. Tamil Shift I at 3749 and B.B.A. Shift I at 3706; measured against seats, the pressure is worst on computing, where 3322 candidates are ranked for 40 computer science places in Shift I.
Postgraduate ranking uses a third scale, the average of the Part III marks from the applicant's bachelor's degree as a percentage. For the same 2026-2027 cycle, read against the intakes on the postgraduate table, the commerce list ranks 207 applicants for 20 seats and opens at 100, the computer science list 269 for 15 seats, the physics list 137 for 25 seats and the Tamil list 126 for 20 seats.
Placements
The two most recent returns the college filed disagree with each other about the same graduating classes.
| Undergraduate class | Filed for NIRF 2025 | Filed for NIRF 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 2022-23, placed | 245 | 273 |
| 2022-23, median salary | Rs 1,80,000 | Rs 1,34,000 |
| 2022-23, to higher studies | 405 | 421 |
| 2023-24, placed | 208 | 252 |
| 2023-24, median salary | Rs 1,74,000 | Rs 1,62,000 |
| 2023-24, to higher studies | 396 | 484 |
The group underneath those rows did not move. Students graduating on time stand at 962 for 2022-23 and 981 for 2023-24 in the older filing and at 962 and 981 again in the newer one, and the master's rows covering the same two years are repeated across the two documents unchanged. The disagreement sits entirely in what the college says happened to that fixed undergraduate group afterwards. There is no placement cell page on the site to put the question to; the footer link for one leads nowhere.
At undergraduate level one pattern survives every version of the numbers: more graduates continue studying than take a job. The latest filing records the 2024-25 class at 1066 graduating on time, 240 placed at a median of Rs 2,16,000 and 526 going on to higher studies. The master's cohort runs the other way that year, with 219 graduating, 62 placed at a median of Rs 1,77,000 and 24 continuing to study, so a master's degree here more often ends in work and a bachelor's more often ends in another course.
The only campus recruitment record the college has ever published is from its annual quality report for 2016-17, which logged 6 organisations visiting, 144 students participating and 19 placed. Nothing of that kind has appeared since.
Seat Matrix
The state admission list and the college's own programme table agree to the seat. The ranking return is the document out of step, and it is drifting upward.
| Undergraduate seats | Figure |
|---|---|
| TNGASA district-wise list for the 2026 admissions | 1068 |
| The college's NIRF return, sanctioned intake 2023-24 | 1132 |
| The college's NIRF return, sanctioned intake 2024-25 | 1176 |
Admission runs against the state's 1068, which is the total of the shift columns in the programme table above. The Directorate of Collegiate Education carries the same 21 course-and-shift entries for this college that the college prints itself, sanctioned strength included, so the state register and the campus agree line for line. Postgraduate sanction in the same ranking return moves from 231 for 2023-24 to 294 for 2024-25.
Five government arts colleges appear under Sivagangai district on the state list, and this is the largest of them.
| Sivagangai district government college | Sanctioned undergraduate seats, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Alagappa Government Arts College, Karaikudi | 1068 |
| Raja Doraisingam Government Arts College, Sivagangai | 1018 |
| Government Arts College for Women, Sivagangai | 748 |
| V. S. Sivalingam Government Arts College, Pulankurichi | 454 |
| Government Arts and Science College, Manamadurai | 290 |
Rankings
The position has not moved in two years and the score underneath it has. This college finished 76th in the college category in 2024 and 76th again in 2025, while its total climbed from 53.87 to 56.80. It improved and the field improved with it.
| NIRF college ranking | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rank | 54 | 63 | 76 | 76 |
| Overall score | 55.18 | 54.76 | 53.87 | 56.80 |
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 58.20 | 56.77 | 55.04 | 63.35 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 41.01 | 39.92 | 38.45 | 35.13 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 72.24 | 72.36 | 70.71 | 68.82 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 43.63 | 47.78 | 47.86 | 47.85 |
| Perception | 33.34 | 31.87 | 36.10 | 41.99 |
Set that beside the earlier cycles and the shape is a climb, a drop, then a plateau. The college's own history page records positions of 84th, 80th and 75th in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 rankings, so the climb ran up to 54th in 2022, 63rd in 2023 began the slide, and 76th has been the position in both tables since.
One column falls in every single year of the table, and it is research. The 2026 return accounts for that without needing interpretation: no patents were published or granted in 2022, 2023 or 2024, consultancy earned nothing across the three years, and sponsored research went from one project worth Rs 1,50,000 in each of 2022-23 and 2023-24 to no projects and no funding agencies at all in 2024-25. Graduation outcomes, the parameter that carried this college through its best years, has slipped in each of the last two tables as well.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
The site is small for the roll it carries. The college describes itself as sprawling over 13.5 acres of land with a built up area of 5100 sq.mts, and its last quality report counts 73 classrooms, 16 laboratories and 2 seminar halls inside that.
A collection of 86,729 books, including first editions of classical authors, with 3764 books added from government funds over the last five years, sits against about 5 computers with internet, 1 printer and 1 photostat machine, and e-resources reached through the N-LIST programme. The library opens from 8:45 am to 5:30 pm on all working days, runs open access, and lends one book to an undergraduate, two to a postgraduate and five to a staff member. That single-book undergraduate limit is the constraint to plan around. Library capital spending roughly doubled and then held: Rs 1,99,155 in 2022-23, Rs 4,23,952 in 2023-24 and Rs 3,99,259 in 2024-25.
Sports get real ground for a campus this size, including a hockey field and a multi gym alongside the usual courts and a multi-purpose play ground for cricket, athletics and handball.
On accessibility the ranking framework asks three questions and this campus gives three different answers, one of them flat. A lift or a ramp is reported in more than 80% of the buildings. A specially designed toilet is reported in less than 40%. Asked about walking aids, wheelchairs and transport between buildings for handicapped students, the return answers No. A wheelchair user should treat that third answer as the operative one and speak to the office before accepting a seat.
No hostel is described in any document the college publishes, and the residence link in its own footer leads nowhere, so assume you are arranging accommodation in Karaikudi town yourself.
Hostel
Faculty
More than half the teaching here is done on temporary contracts, and the college says so itself. Its history page puts the present team at 85 well-qualified and competent permanent teaching faculties, 90 temporary full time teaching faculties and 41 non-teaching faculties. The 2026 ranking return lists them one row per teacher with an association type of Regular or Adhoc and Contractual against every name, alongside a joining date and, where it applies, a leaving date. That column is the one to read before choosing a department, because a contract post need not be renewed between academic years.
Research recognition reaches most of the campus. Twelve of the departments are recognised as research centres and forty staff members are recognised as research guides by Alagappa University, with eight departments offering M.Phil. programmes. The doctoral pipeline behind that is small: the 2026 return records 11 full time and 3 part time Ph.D. scholars pursuing their programme to 2024-25, with 6 full time and 8 part time graduating in that year.
Fifteen departments carry a named head on the administration page under the Principal, Dr. P. Vasanthi, one more than the undergraduate table has degrees, because Hindi is taught here without a degree of its own. One associate professor appears twice in that list, holding the computer science and the computer application headships together. One caution on headcounts: the history page gives an overall student strength of 3837, above the rolls the ranking return breaks out, so the two are not counting the same body.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
The banner strip on the college homepage reads that it is nationally re-accredited with a B grade by NAAC, and the history page dates that lineage precisely: NAAC accredited the college with B+, B and B grade in 2002, 2009 and 2018 respectively.
The return the college filed for the 2026 ranking says something else. Asked whether the institute has a valid NAAC accreditation, the answer entered is NO. The grade that banner shows is the one awarded in 2018, and no certificate of a later cycle appears anywhere on the site. Read the filing rather than the banner. Where the grade weighs on a choice, put the contradiction to the college directly and ask which NAAC cycle it is in now.
The supporting paperwork points the same way. The NAAC page names a self study report preparation committee but carries no report behind the link, and the annual quality assurance reports stop at 2016-17. What is not in doubt is the UGC standing: 2(f) and 12(B) recognition under the UGC Act 1956 is what keeps the degrees and the central funding eligibility valid.
Aid
Scholarships
Every student on the rolls is on a government reimbursement, and the college's own scholarship shelf holds nothing but the forms for it. In the 2026 return the entire roll falls into one column: 3361 undergraduates and 436 postgraduates reimbursed in full from state and central government funds, nothing against institution funds, nothing against private bodies, and not one student left unreimbursed. For a family, that is the fee story: the state carries the tuition.
The forms tell you which schemes carry it. The downloads page stocks four of them and no others: a fresh and a renewal application for the BC, MBC and DNC scholarship, and a fresh and a renewal application for the SC and ST scholarship. Both are Tamil Nadu community welfare schemes, and nothing on that page names an award the college makes itself.
Only one figure has ever been published against that support, and it is a decade old. The quality report for 2016-17 records 2321 students receiving Rs 55,52,690 of government financial support in the year, with the institutional support row left blank. Ask the office what any of those awards is worth this year, because no rupee amount is printed against them anywhere.

Student Reviews
A review filed against "Alagappa, Karaikudi" may not be describing this campus at all. Alagappa University teaches its own students on its own campus and runs a distance and online education arm besides, and the engineering college nearby carries the same founder's name again. Aggregator ratings do not tell the three apart, nor check that the reviewer ever enrolled, so no star rating is carried here.
The one systematic reputational measurement anyone has taken of this place is the ranking framework's survey of academics and employers. There the college scores 41.99 in 2025, up from 33.34 in 2022, and that rise is the only piece of reputational evidence here drawn from a controlled sample rather than an open comment box.

No photographs are carried on this page. The college maintains a gallery of its own, labelled block by block: both entrances, the administrative and academic buildings, the botanical garden, the auditorium, the gym, the cooperative store, the ladies lounge, the NCC and NSS rooms, a ramp, and an old banyan tree.
