All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, Raipur
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Raipur climbed to rank 31 among India's medical colleges in the NIRF 2025 list, up from 38 the year before, which is a fast rise for an institute that took its first MBBS class only in 2012. It is the referral hospital that Chhattisgarh, and the districts around it in eastern Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, send their most complicated cases to, and it admits 125 MBBS students a year purely on a NEET-UG rank. What AIIMS Raipur teaches, how a seat is won and what its own filings actually record are narrower and more checkable than an aggregator makes them sound.
Overview
AIIMS Raipur is a central-government Institute of National Importance, run directly by the Union health ministry, and that status is what lets it frame its own syllabus and sign its own MBBS, PG and doctoral degrees instead of answering to a Chhattisgarh university the way a state medical college must. It opened in 2012, one of the first six such institutes the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana placed outside Delhi to carry tertiary care into states that had gone without it, and its institutional record dates the campus to that year.
Its campus reads as two parcels rather than one block. The institutional record puts the whole site at 103.63 acres, with the hospital and college complex on 63.85 acres beside GE Road at Tatibandh and a separate residential colony at Kabir Nagar on 39.78 acres; sitting in a major central-India city, the institute serves as a referral centre for Chhattisgarh and parts of the neighbouring Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. What gives a college this young the range to teach the full span of clinical medicine is the traffic through its wards, and the institute's NIRF 2025 data submission records a 1,025-bed hospital running an average of 882 beds filled a day and drawing 2,844 outpatients a day across the 2023 calendar year.
Courses & Fees
Medicine is the core, and AIIMS Raipur runs the standard AIIMS teaching ladder around it, from nursing and paramedical courses at the entry end to super-specialty fellowships at the top.
| Programme | Level | Entrance route |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS | Undergraduate | NEET-UG, through the MCC |
| BSc Nursing and paramedical | Undergraduate | Institute entrance |
| MD, MS | Postgraduate | INI-CET |
| DM, MCh | Super-specialty | INI-SS |
| PhD | Doctoral | Institute process |

That same filing puts the sanctioned intake at 125 MBBS seats and 157 places across the three-year MD and MS programmes, so the postgraduate operation is already the larger of the two by seat count. The gap between an AIIMS and a private medical college is widest on the fee line, and Raipur's own NIRF 2025 data submission shows how little that fee filters who arrives: 572 of its 606 MBBS students come from outside Chhattisgarh and just 32 from inside it, so all but a small home-state minority moved across a border to take the seat. Central funding is what keeps tuition at the token statutory figure instead of the several lakh a self-financed college charges. Because it publishes no single all-in MBBS figure on its public pages, the head-wise total for a given joining year is a thing to read off the official admission portal and the counselling bulletin, never an aggregator's fee grid.
Admissions
Every MBBS seat here is filled from the national pool, which is exactly why the home-state split above runs so lopsided. Because the AIIMS system now shares one counselling process, every undergraduate seat at Raipur is an All India Quota seat that the Medical Counselling Committee allots on a NEET-UG rank; the institute itself neither tests applicants nor holds back a domicile or management quota. What actually admits a candidate is the committee's written allotment against a locked preference list, and only that letter puts a name on the Tatibandh rolls.
The postgraduate doors run on different papers, and behind them sits a bigger training operation than the college's age suggests: the NIRF 2025 data submission counts 412 residents in the three-year MD and MS courses alone. A seat among them turns on INI-CET, the single entrance the Institutes of National Importance conduct in common under AIIMS New Delhi, and the DM and MCh super-specialties on its sister exam, INI-SS. The catch that costs applicants a cycle is the NEET-PG scorecard: it admits to state and private colleges by the hundred, and to no AIIMS residency at all. Nursing, paramedical and doctoral entrants each clear the institute's own test, so the paper you sit follows the stage of training you are entering, not the AIIMS letters over the gate.
Cutoff
Ask what NEET score gets you into Raipur and there is no honest single number, because the institute has never set or published a cutoff mark. A place is decided purely by where you sit in the NEET-UG all-India merit list; what gets quoted as a "Raipur cutoff" is nothing more than the closing rank of the last candidate admitted in a category during one MCC counselling round, a figure that only exists once that round has been settled. Raipur's own twist is that it ranks last of the six first-wave AIIMS on the medical table, so its general-category seats usually close at ranks a shade easier than Rishikesh, Bhubaneswar or Jodhpur command, even if those ranks still land firmly inside the top of the NEET-UG field; each mop-up round then loosens them again as higher scorers trade up and vacate. Treat any Raipur closing rank from a previous year as a rough prior, not a target, and go by the allotment result MCC publishes this cycle, taken one round and one category at a time.
Placements
An MBBS does not end at a placement drive, so the honest signal in the institute's filing is the trajectory of its numbers rather than a single headline package. Its NIRF 2025 data submission records the median pay of its placed MBBS graduates rising across three batches, from Rs 13,00,000 for those who finished in 2020-21 to Rs 14,00,000 in 2021-22 and Rs 15,00,000 in 2022-23; of the 97 who completed the course on time in that last year, 62 were recorded as placed and 35 went straight on to higher study, so for that batch the institute logged more first-job placements than moves into a residency seat.
The pay that carries more weight lands with the postgraduate leavers, and the same filing shows it climbing faster: the median for its three-year MD and MS residents moved from Rs 15,00,000 for the 2021-22 batch to Rs 16,00,000 in 2022-23 and Rs 20,00,000 in 2023-24, the year 94 of 110 residents were placed. That same year produced the institute's first super-specialty cohort, 14 DM and MCh graduates where the two batches before it had none, which is the clearest marker that Raipur's training has now reached the top of the ladder.
Seat Matrix
All 125 of Raipur's MBBS places are All India Quota seats, so their reservation split is drawn from the central roster rather than any Chhattisgarh list. The widest route in is the unreserved quota, 49 of the 125 seats, while Scheduled Caste candidates hold 17; the full category-by-category breakdown, filed under institute code 200506 and refreshed every cycle, is in the MCC final seat matrix for the 2024 undergraduate round shown below.
| Category | Seats |
|---|---|
| Open / General | 49 |
| Open / General (PwBD) | 2 |
| EWS | 12 |
| EWS (PwBD) | 1 |
| OBC | 32 |
| OBC (PwBD) | 2 |
| SC | 17 |
| SC (PwBD) | 1 |
| ST | 9 |
| ST (PwBD) | 0 |
| Total | 125 |
The open and OBC lines give an applicant the widest way in, and because these shares are re-issued for every admission cycle, the current MCC matrix is the version to read rather than a count held over from a past year.
Rankings
On the one external table that ranks it, the NIRF 2025 Medical list, AIIMS Raipur is placed 31st on an overall score of 58.44, seven places higher than the 38th it held on the 2024 Medical list.
| NIRF 2025 parameter | Score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 81.58 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 74.80 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 72.37 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 32.38 |
| Perception | 20.62 |
| Overall | 58.44 |
The shape of those five parameter scores is lopsided in the way a young institute's usually is. Its clinical-teaching pillar, Teaching, Learning and Resources, reaches 81.58, and both Graduation Outcomes at 74.80 and Outreach and Inclusivity at 72.37 clear seventy, so the college scores well on everything a hospital and its students directly produce. What holds the total to the fifties is the pair that time builds rather than a single year fixes: a Perception score of just 20.62, the weakest of the five, and Research and Professional Practice at 32.38.
The research pillar, at least, is visibly moving. Sponsored projects on its data submission roughly doubled inside two years, from 34 in 2021-22 to 69 in 2023-24 across 33 funding agencies, so of its two weak scores it is the research line, more than perception, that a strong grant cycle or two could still lift.
Departments
Teaching at Raipur now spans the four tiers a mature AIIMS carries, pre-clinical, para-clinical, clinical and super-specialty. Its MD and MS seats cover the standard medical and surgical disciplines, and the super-specialty faculties running the DM and MCh courses are no longer nominal, having sent out their first graduates in 2023-24. The Department of Neurosurgery is among those actively teaching and running clinical meetings on campus, per notices on its official website.
The institute reaches past the pure medical roster as well. Its academic record lists undergraduate nursing and paramedical education and a dental wing alongside the medical college, so an MBBS student here trains within a broader mix of health disciplines than a stand-alone medical college offers, with a College of Nursing running its own courses off the same site.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The hospital is the real teaching asset, and its scale is what lets a college this young carry super-specialty medicine at all. The NIRF 2025 data submission records 1,025 sanctioned beds, an average of 882 occupied on any given day and 2,844 outpatients arriving daily through 2023, a caseload a district hospital rarely sees. The whole of it, medical college, tertiary hospital and administration, shares one campus at Tatibandh rather than being scattered across the city.
The institute runs telemedicine links and app-based OPD registration for patients, both listed on its official website. Physical access for disabled students is covered in the same NIRF filing: over 80 per cent of the buildings have a lift or a ramp, wheelchairs and transport run between blocks, and specially built toilets are in place wherever a student needs one.
Hostel
Living on campus is close to mandatory for a trainee here, since the clinical postings and the compulsory rotating internship put students on the wards through the night, and Raipur runs its housing on a plot of its own for exactly that: its institutional record puts a combined staff-and-student residential complex at Kabir Nagar, 39.78 acres set apart from the hospital block. Rooms are allotted by the institute, not chased in the Raipur rental market, and rent and mess charges are billed separately from tuition, so a realistic budget adds them on top of the joining cost. No fixed hostel rate appears on the public pages, which leaves one dependable move: pin down the current charge and the room allotment with the academic section after admission, rather than assume a bed comes bundled with the seat.
Faculty
How deep the teaching bench runs is itself a marker of Raipur leaving its start-up years behind. Its NIRF 2025 data submission enters 190 faculty, the staffing that underwrites its standout Teaching, Learning and Resources score of 81.58. What 190 teachers spread across the clinical departments buy a trainee is availability: an undergraduate on a ward round and a resident stuck on a thesis chapter can both reach a consultant or senior resident without joining a queue.
That same bench also shoulders the postgraduate and doctoral teaching. The same return puts 412 MD and MS residents and 33 full-time PhD scholars under it, which means the consultant who grades an MBBS script most weeks is also guiding a doctoral thesis and holding down a referral clinic.
Notable Alumni
There is no verified roll of famous graduates to publish for AIIMS Raipur, and the reason is plainly arithmetic: the institute enrolled its first 50 MBBS students in 2012, per its institutional record, so the oldest of its doctors are barely a decade into their careers and most are still completing or only just past residency. Naming a wall of distinguished alumni for a college this new would mean inventing one. When its graduates have had the years to reach the senior clinical, academic and public roles a notable-alumni list records, this section will fill on the strength of traceable records, and not before.
News & Articles
The institute's own website is where its current business is posted, the tenders, the recruitment rounds, the CME and event notices, the press notes, and that panel, not a re-posted third-party feed, is the reliable version of any of it. Because such items expire within weeks, a link lifted from elsewhere is usually already out of date. Admission is the one thing the notice board has no say over: MBBS seats move on the nationally fixed MCC counselling calendar, so for anything to do with a seat the page to keep open is the counselling portal, not the institute's own.
College Compare
Set beside the other AIIMS, Raipur's placing is easy to read off one table. The NIRF 2025 Medical list keeps the original AIIMS in New Delhi at rank 1 and strings the six institutes of the first PMSSY wave from Rishikesh at 13, through Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Bhopal and Patna, down to Raipur at 31, so even after climbing seven places Raipur is the last of that founding group. What the table cannot show is that the gap narrows in the things a student lives with daily, because fee, entrance and degree are effectively identical across every AIIMS; what actually separates them is the city they sit in, the disease mix their wards pull in and the number of years each has had to grow.
Inside Chhattisgarh the choice is starker than a ranking suggests. Raipur outranks every other medical college in the state nationally, but its seat is won only on an all-India NEET-UG rank, with domicile counting for nothing; a state government college reserves a large share of its places for Chhattisgarh applicants and is often the more reachable target, even if a rural-service bond tends to come attached. Which to aim at depends less on prestige than on how competitive a candidate's NEET-UG rank really is.
Contact & Location
AIIMS Raipur sits on GE Road at Tatibandh, on the western edge of Raipur, where one address holds the medical college, the hospital and the administration together. The district administration records its postal code as 492099 and a public office line of 0771-2572240.

It is worth knowing before you travel that the campus office cannot help with a seat: MBBS admission is handled entirely by the MCC from a central pool, so a query about getting in belongs with the counselling committee, not the institute's reception. And it helps to remember what kind of institution answers at that address, because it is a working tertiary hospital before it is a college, and its wards, its OPD and its teaching blocks each run on separate clocks.
