National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Postgraduate)

NEET PG, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Postgraduate), is the single national qualifying and ranking examination for admission to postgraduate medical courses in India. It is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. To sit for it you need a recognised MBBS degree, provisional or permanent registration with the relevant medical council, and completion of the compulsory rotating internship by the prescribed cut-off.

Your score decides both eligibility and merit for MD and MS degrees, PG diploma courses, and the post-MBBS Diplomate of National Board (DNB) and NBEMS diploma programmes. Seats span government, private, deemed and central medical colleges across the country. Super-specialty courses (DM, MCh and DrNB) admit through a separate examination, NEET-SS, and admission to the Institutes of National Importance runs through INI-CET; both sit outside NEET PG.

The exam is a computer-based test held once a year, with multiple-choice questions drawn from the MBBS syllabus across the pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects. It began in 2013, replacing the earlier All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE). Counselling and seat allocation follow the merit list: the Directorate General of Health Services runs counselling for the all-India quota, while states conduct their own counselling for state-quota seats.
