A.p.c. Mahalaxmi College For Women, Ettayapuram Road, Tuticorin - 628 002
Two years of extra study at this Thoothukudi college moved the median starting salary by nothing at all. The undergraduates who left in 2024-25 recorded a median of Rs 2,85,000, and so did the postgraduates, on figures the college itself entered for India Rankings 2026; the year before, both sat at Rs 2,76,000. A student choosing between finishing at B.Sc. and staying for M.Sc. here is choosing on grounds other than the pay line.
The other number worth knowing before you apply is a subtraction. The college has been cutting its own sanctioned undergraduate seats, from 736 down to 576 in two admission cycles. It was never filling that sanction, so the cut makes for a smaller college rather than a more selective one, but it is the number that decides how much room is left when your application lands.
Overview
This is a women's college and it was built to be one. Kulapathi A.P.C. Veerabahu had already founded V.O. Chidambaram College and, in 1955, a college of education, when he opened this institution in 1973 for a reason the college still states on his behalf: girls in those days were not allowed higher education, and he wanted that overcome, on its founder page. It began with 212 students and 16 teaching and non-teaching staff, affiliated then to Madurai Kamaraj University, with the foundation stone of the present premises laid on the Thoothukudi to Madurai highway in Sankaraperi panchayat on 2 July 1973 and the buildings occupied in 1974, on its history page. Affiliation now runs to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Tirunelveli, which carries the college on its roll of affiliated colleges under Thoothukudi district.
The institutional distinctiveness note the college wrote for its quality report carries the most useful description of who actually sits in these classrooms, and no ranking table contains anything like it. Against an average annual roll of 2,100, the college records that 68 per cent of its students are first-generation learners, 87 per cent are the daughters of drivers, farmers, coolies, mechanics, fishermen and the like, with a family income under three lakh rupees a year, 35 per cent are raised by a single parent, and 32 per cent are single daughters, in that document. Those proportions are why the fee question and the certificate question loom larger here than the cutoff question.
The current roll is smaller than that average. The college filed 1,823 undergraduates and 244 postgraduates for India Rankings 2026, every one of them a woman, with 1,814 of the undergraduates resident in Tamil Nadu, seven from other states and two from outside India, and 119 marked economically backward, in its India Rankings 2026 data submission. The catchment is the district, and the district is the applicant pool.
It is also private rather than government-run, on a grant-in-aid footing. AISHE files it as Private Aided under institution code C-41140, the code the college prints on its own AISHE page beside its survey certificates for 2018-2019 through 2022-2023. Its registered address is on Ettayapuram Road, Tuticorin-2, which is the spelling the college still uses in its own footer.
Courses & Fees
The programme list exists, but not where you would look for it. The college's main site carries none: the Courses entry in the Academics menu opens onto add-on and skill courses only, and the Departments index renders both tabs empty under the line "No departments found in this category". The list is on the admissions portal, and it is an image. The Prospectus page there holds one JPEG, the admission poster for the coming year, and that poster is the only place the college says which stream each degree belongs to.
| Stream | Undergraduate | Postgraduate |
|---|---|---|
| Aided | B.A. Tamil, B.A. English, B.A. History, B.Sc. Mathematics, B.Sc. Chemistry, B.Sc. Zoology, B.Com. | M.A. Tamil, M.Sc. Mathematics |
| Unaided | B.Sc. Physics, B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Com. (III Batches), B.C.A. | M.A. English, M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Chemistry, M.Com. |
Read the columns and the college's shape appears. Humanities and the older sciences sit on the aided side; computing, physics and the commerce batches sit on the unaided side, along with every master's degree except Tamil and Mathematics. Chemistry is therefore aided at bachelor's level and unaided at master's, and a Commerce candidate faces an aided queue and several unaided ones. The poster also advertises Ph.D supervision in Tamil, English, Chemistry, Commerce and Mathematics, and certificate courses run with IIT Madras Pravartak.
It carries no fee figure, no seat number and no document checklist, which is why the Programme Specific Outcomes file is still worth opening: it describes what each degree claims to teach, one programme at a time, though it ignores the aided line and omits B.C.A. Carry one discrepancy to the office: the poster puts B.Sc. Mathematics on the aided side only, while the college's own scholarship list for 2023-24 records a student in a B.Sc. Maths unaided section, in that beneficiary list. The M.Phil route the college once ran is on neither the poster nor the outcomes file, and its last trace in any published record is one M.Phil graduate in the 2020-2021 block of the Mathematics placement file, placed at an arts and science college for Rs 96,000.
On fees there is no figure to quote, and inventing a typical one would be worse than the blank. What the filings establish is that tuition here is mostly reimbursed rather than paid. The 2026 submission puts 1,131 undergraduates on state and central government money and 624 on the college's own funds, with 36 covered by private bodies and 32 outside full reimbursement altogether; at postgraduate level the institution carries more than the government does, 128 students against 70, with 12 private and 34 outside, in that submission. The question for the office is not what the fee is but which reimbursement route you are on and what falls due before it arrives.
Admissions
No entrance examination is involved at any level. Everything runs through the college's own portal at admission.apcmcollege.ac.in, which is open for the 2026-2027 year and sets the sequence out as register, verify by mobile, fill the application online, upload documents, pay the fee, then download the application.
The instructions themselves are published only in Tamil, on both the undergraduate and postgraduate guideline pages, and you have to tick that you have read and accepted them before the form opens. Nothing else on the portal repeats what they say, so a candidate who does not read Tamil should have them translated before registering rather than after.
Both pages tell you to apply separately for the government-aided and the self-financed divisions, while allowing one mobile number to carry both applications. The document lists then diverge, and so does the money.
| Undergraduate entry | Postgraduate entry | |
|---|---|---|
| Marks proof asked for | Class 11 and Class 12 mark certificates | Undergraduate mark list |
| Identity documents | Electronic community certificate, electronic income certificate | Electronic community certificate, electronic income certificate, Aadhaar card copy |
| Special-category certificates named | Sports, differently abled, ex-serviceman family | Sports, ex-serviceman family |
| When tuition falls due | After certificate verification confirms the admission | On the day of selection |
That last row is the line most worth acting on. An undergraduate applicant is told that the fee is payable only once certificates have been verified and the admission confirmed. A postgraduate applicant is told the opposite order: selected candidates pay the tuition fee on the day of selection, and only those who have paid are issued an admission number and have their admission confirmed. Arriving at the counter for a master's seat without the money ready is a different risk from arriving for a bachelor's seat without it.
Results reach candidates three ways under the undergraduate guidelines, on the college website, by text message to the registered number and by email, and whoever is selected then turns up on the date allotted to her with originals and copies.
One thing about the portal is worth a glance before you pay. Its refund policy makes application and processing payments non-refundable except for a duplicate payment, a technical charging error, or the process being discontinued, with a seven-day window to raise a request, and two fields on it are blank: the one that should say how many business days a refund takes, and the one that should give the support address to send it to, on that policy page.
Cutoff
No closing mark is published for any programme here, and that is not for want of looking. The undergraduate guidelines say selected candidates are announced on the website, so the selection list is the document that would carry an implied cutoff; the Announcements page currently reads "No announcements found" and the events feed carries nothing but a school festival. No previous year's list is archived anywhere.
What actually decides a seat is your qualifying-examination marks read inside the Tamil Nadu reservation roster, which means the mark that closes one community list says nothing about another. Of the 1,823 undergraduates on the current roll, 1,704 are filed as socially challenged, the SC, ST and OBC categories counted together, in the 2026 submission, so the open-category pool a general candidate competes for is a small fraction of the intake.
The more informative figure is the relationship between seats sanctioned and seats filled, because the college has never filled its sanction in any year on record. It admitted 616 first-year undergraduates against 624 sanctioned places for 2019-20, 567 against 624 for 2020-21 and 688 against 736 for 2021-22, on the return the Ministry of Education publishes for India Rankings 2025, then 657 against 736 for 2022-23, in its later submission. A margin that size left an applicant with a middling aggregate somewhere to land, and the sanction cut in the next section is the college trimming towards what it was already filling rather than raising a bar. Watch the seat numbers, not a cutoff that does not exist, and put the question to the admission registration mobile line the college prints on its own admission poster rather than to the office switchboard, which is the single number every page of the site offers for every purpose at once.
Placements
The filed record covers four graduating cohorts and reads better each year on volume while barely moving on price.
| Cohort graduating | Level | Graduated in stipulated time | Placed | Median salary | Went to higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | Undergraduate | 532 | 214 | Rs 2,70,000 | 180 |
| 2022-23 | Undergraduate | 534 | 127 | Rs 2,53,000 | 153 |
| 2023-24 | Undergraduate | 610 | 264 | Rs 2,76,000 | 220 |
| 2024-25 | Undergraduate | 584 | 296 | Rs 2,85,000 | 177 |
| 2021-22 | Postgraduate | 81 | 45 | Rs 2,70,000 | 19 |
| 2022-23 | Postgraduate | 98 | 62 | Rs 2,76,000 | 10 |
| 2023-24 | Postgraduate | 96 | 65 | Rs 2,76,000 | 12 |
| 2024-25 | Postgraduate | 101 | 70 | Rs 2,85,000 | 13 |
| Sources: the college's India Rankings 2026 submission and its India Rankings 2025 return. |
The undergraduate placement share climbed from 127 of 534 in 2022-23 to 296 of 584 in 2024-25, a real recovery from the post-pandemic floor, and postgraduates place at a higher rate still, 70 of 101 in the latest year. But the median column is identical for both levels in each of the last two years, and it was identical in 2021-22 too. The only year the master's line ran ahead was 2022-23, when the undergraduate median fell to Rs 2,53,000 while the postgraduate one held at Rs 2,76,000.
Where those jobs are becomes concrete in the department files. Every department page links a placement record, and two of them put money next to the employer. The Mathematics department's placement record for 2018-19 to 2022-23 puts two Thoothukudi shipping agencies at Rs 2,64,000 and Rs 2,67,600, data entry work at a Chennai IT firm at Rs 1,80,000, India Post roles as Gramin Dak Sevak at Rs 3,00,000, and a block of roles under Foxconn's Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development plant at Sunguvarchathiram, at Rs 2,41,200 for an assembly line operator and Rs 2,67,600 for a site supervisor. Read the M.Sc. rows against the B.Sc. rows there and the identical medians above stop being a surprise: ten M.Sc. graduates went to the same Chennai contractor, Vertical Solutions, at the same Rs 2,41,200 as the B.Sc. graduates placed through it.
One employer now dominates the record, and it is not in this district. The unaided Commerce department's placement file runs page after page of a single entry for its most recent cohort, Vertical Solutions acting for the Foxconn Hon Hai plant at Kanchipuram, with no pay column at all. The same file records NIL for 2020-2021 and NIL for 2013-2014, and its older years are full of Thoothukudi names instead: the accounts department of a transport firm, a construction company, a police constable posting, an insurance office. The placement recovery in the table above rests substantially on one contractor and one electronics plant, and neither is in this district: Kanchipuram sits at the far end of the state in Chennai's industrial belt, not on the Thoothukudi coast.
The drive the college runs itself is a port-district affair by contrast. The one on 27 March 2025 brought 13 companies, among them South India Bromine and Allied Chemicals, Sahayamatha Salt Refinery, MGM Edible Oils, Kamal Health Care, Unitech Plasto Components and several Thoothukudi software and tax practices, in its career guidance cell's consolidated report for 2024 to 2025. For the larger drives its students travel across town to V.O. Chidambaram College, founded by the same man: that report records a Reliance Foundation Skilling Academy drive with more than 20 companies at V.O.C. College campus on 16 April 2025 and a Tata Electronics apprenticeship drive under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme at the same campus on 29 April 2025.
Set expectations on the paperwork too. That consolidated report carries ROUGH DRAFT in its own filename and leaves a blank where the attendance for its own March drive should be, while the two drives at V.O. Chidambaram College are logged only as a significant number of students. The whole-college reports linked from the placement cell page are image scans with no text layer, so nothing in them can be quoted or searched. The cell is young in any case, career guidance dating to 1998 and placement to 2014, on its page.
Seat Matrix
The college is shrinking its undergraduate sanction, deliberately and fast.
| Academic year | Sanctioned undergraduate intake | Sanctioned postgraduate intake |
|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 736 | not filed |
| 2022-23 | 736 | 140 |
| 2023-24 | 688 | 140 |
| 2024-25 | 576 | 140 |
Sanction fell twice in succession, at a college that was already admitting fewer first-year students than it was allowed to, and the undergraduate roll of 1,823 now sits below the average of 2,100 the quality note describes. From outside, a shrinking college and a more selective one look identical until you compare the years.
Postgraduate sanction has not moved off 140, and take-up has been climbing towards it without reaching it: 92 admitted in 2020-21, 107 in 2021-22 and 112 in 2022-23, on the 2025 return, and 118 in 2023-24, on the 2026 one. A master's seat here is the easier seat to get, not the harder one.
No programme-level break-up of either figure is published. Sanction is filed as one undergraduate block and one postgraduate block, so the number of B.Sc. Computer Science places or M.Com places is something only the admission office can tell you. The admission poster prints admission registration mobile lines alongside the office number and the college web address; ask in writing during the application window and keep the reply.
Rankings
The college holds 88th place among colleges in India Rankings 2025 with an overall score of 55.44, on the Ministry of Education's college table. The parameter scores behind that total are the interesting part.
| Parameter | Score out of 100 |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 69.82 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 15.74 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 73.60 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 59.53 |
| Perception | 7.99 |
Graduation Outcomes is where the college scores highest, consistent with a place that gets students through their degrees on time and into work or further study. Perception at 7.99 is the floor, and it measures what employers, academics and the public say rather than anything the college does; for an institution drawing from one district and sending graduates back into it, that score is close to structural. Research and Professional Practice at 15.74 is the one that is actually actionable, and the faculty section below is where it stops making sense.
Only one other college from Thoothukudi district appears in that national hundred, V.O. Chidambaram College at 22nd, and the two were founded by the same man. No subject-level or category-specific NIRF rank exists for this college.
A 2026 position does not exist yet. The college has filed its India Rankings 2026 data, but the Ministry's own rankings site is still taking publications and patent data into the 2026 capture system and lists 2025 as its most recent released edition, so the 88th place on the 2025 college table is the current one.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
The library is the facility with real numbers attached: 35,996 printed volumes on the Colon Classification system, managed on MAHALIB 2.0 software, with 25 journals, 26 magazines and 8 newspapers, and e-resources running from N-LIST through INFLIBNET to e-PG Pathshala, Vidya-Mitra, SWAYAM and the National Digital Library, on the library page. The present building was inaugurated on 23 August 1999 by Thiru M.S. Ramaiah Pillai, with Dr K.P. Aravanan, then Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, presiding. Access is on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a 15-day borrowing period, on the amenities page, and a book bank serves students who cannot buy textbooks, in the distinctiveness note.
Spending on it has just jumped, from Rs 2,14,423 in 2022-23 to Rs 2,75,595 in 2023-24 and then Rs 8,31,924 in 2024-25, while new laboratory equipment took Rs 31,01,708 in the latest year, in the 2026 submission. A college trimming its seat sanction is not trimming its lab budget.
The teaching estate, as the college lists it, runs to six technology theatres with LCD projectors and smart boards, two air-conditioned conference halls holding about one hundred and fifty people between them, a language lab, computer and research labs, a mini auditorium, a canteen and a vehicle shed, on the amenities and student welfare pages. One entry in that list contradicts the programme list: the college names a Botany laboratory alongside Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry and Zoology, but runs no Botany department and no Botany degree.
Accessibility is filed rather than merely claimed. The 2026 form puts ramps or lifts and purpose-built toilets in more than 80 per cent of the estate each, and confirms wheelchairs, walking aids and help moving a student from one block to another, in that submission. The student welfare page adds scribes and wheelchairs for disabled students and a separate rest room for them.
No hostel is named on any page of the college site that can be reached, and the operational expenditure lines in its ranking submission are filed with hostel maintenance explicitly excluded. Treat this as a day-scholar college until the office tells you otherwise, and ask about residence before you count on it.
Hostel
Faculty
The staff roster in the 2026 submission lists 126 members, 125 of them women: 106 Assistant Professors, 15 Associate Professors, one entry in the Dean and Principal row, and four in an other category holding a doctorate, an MBA, an LLM and a CA between them, in that submission. The doctorate in that last group belongs to the librarian, whom the library page names.
Qualifications are the strongest thing in that return. Counting that same roster, 105 of the 126 entries record a Ph.D as their highest qualification, with 9 holding NET, 4 SET and 4 an M.Phil. Doctorates alone therefore account for the great majority of the staff, appreciably better than the 75 per cent for Ph.D, NET and SET combined that the college claimed in its own distinctiveness note a couple of years earlier. Experience is long in the middle and thin at both ends: the same roster has its longest-serving member joining on 25 September 1981 and recording 526 months of it, its newest arrivals recording 12, and 28 of the 126 entries under 60 months. Six entries are marked as no longer working at the college, all of them having left during 2025.
That concentration of doctorates makes the Research and Professional Practice score of 15.74 on the ranking table harder to explain away. Recognised research centres do exist here, in Chemistry, Mathematics, Tamil, English and Commerce, matching the Ph.D subjects the admission poster advertises. What those five pages contain, though, is course description and nothing else: not a scholar on the books, not a thesis, not a paper. The nearest thing to an output figure anywhere on the site is the Chemistry department's own note of six UGC-funded minor research projects worth Rs 14.95 lakh since the department opened in 1973, on its page, which also dates its research centre to 2020. Weigh that against the 105 doctorates the roster records and the low score stops looking like a scoring error.
One administrative point before you write to anyone: the college's own pages disagree about who is Principal. The Principal page carries a message from Dr K. Palani, the trust page lists Dr K. Subbulakshmi as Principal in charge, and the India Rankings 2026 submission records Dr K. Subbu Lakshmi in its Dean and Principal row. Address the office, not a name.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
The college holds NAAC accreditation at A+ with a CGPA of 3.42 in its fourth cycle, recommended at the 239th meeting of the NAAC Standing Committee on 20 February 2025. It appears there with its AISHE code C-41140 under the heading Affiliated College, which settles the autonomy question, and it is one of only two affiliated colleges in the country on that fourth-cycle list, in the committee's published list.
Almost none of the paperwork behind that is reachable on the college's own website, which is the caveat to carry into any conversation with the office. The NAAC link in the site header does not resolve. On the IQAC reports page, every Annual Quality Assurance Report listed, from 2018-2019 through 2022-2023, opens a storage error rather than a document, and so does the Cycle III Self Study Report, while the Cycle IV link opens a page that no longer exists. Both Institutional Best Practice documents on the best practices page fail differently and no better: they point into the retired WordPress tree the college has taken down, and are simply gone. The canonical URL the site declares to search engines on every single page points at a second college domain, apcmahalaxmicollege.ac.in, which has no DNS record at all.
The grade itself the college does publish, in the one place it fully controls: the admission poster heads itself "Reaccredited by NAAC with A+ Grade". The letterhead of its scholarship policy still carries the 'B+' of the previous cycle, so a document's grade line tells you when it was written rather than where the college stands.
The outcome and planning documents do open, from the three outcomes files to the strategic plan and the distinctiveness note. The IQAC says it has managed four cycles and is preparing the fifth, on its own page, and the 2026 submission answers the accreditation question with a bare "YES" and no grade.
Aid
Scholarships
The college runs one scholarship of its own, and the interesting detail is who pays for it: the A.P.C. Mahalaxmi Ammal Memorial Scholarship Endowment is funded by 64 members of the college's own staff, in its policy document. Awards are fee concessions rather than cash grants in most cases, and the percentages are set by circumstance before merit is added.
| Basis of award | Concession |
|---|---|
| Financially challenged | 25 per cent of fee |
| Single-parent student | 40 per cent |
| Parentless student | 50 per cent |
| Academic record above 80 per cent | additional 10 per cent |
| Academic record above 90 per cent | additional 25 per cent |
| Physically challenged student meeting any criterion above | additional 10 per cent |
Sports achievement is a separate route to the same fund. Eligibility turns on a clean record with no arrears and no disciplinary action, no student may hold two awards at once, and a student reapplies each year up to her final one. The committee screens applications and the college President, Thiru A.P.C.V. Chockalingam, approves them.
The published award lists let you see the real size of it rather than the policy's percentages. In 2023-24 the endowment made 46 awards totalling Rs 2,80,757, with individual amounts running from Rs 2,500 to Rs 11,609, in that year's beneficiary list. Annual lists are published from 2019-2020 onwards, on the scholarship page. Set against the size of the roll, an award from this fund is real help for a few dozen students a year rather than a general expectation.
The larger money is governmental. The reimbursement lines already quoted are the main channel; the second is the Tamil Nadu scheme for girls who studied classes 6 to 12 in government schools, which pays Rs 1,000 a month by direct transfer until the degree is finished and sits on top of any other award, and which the college administers through a named staff coordinator, on its page for the scheme.

Student Reviews
No Expertie rating appears here, and no directory's star average has been copied in either. Not one of those scores can demonstrate that the person who typed it ever sat through a class at this college.
The college does collect stakeholder opinion, and in a way you can verify: four Google Forms, one each for students, teachers, employers and alumnae, linked from its feedback page. What is missing is the output. The Feedback Analysis and Action Taken Reports link on that page runs into the retired part of the site and no longer resolves, and the Annual Quality Assurance Reports that would carry the tabulated results are the same dead links described under accreditation.
That leaves nothing here to summarise, so the useful thing is to name the people who do have answers. The alumnae association has taken in every outgoing batch since 1980, meets at the start of each academic year and elects its own president, secretary and treasurer from the membership. Anyone wanting to know what a year in the aided B.Com section is actually like should ask one of them rather than a rating.
Campus
Gallery
Expertie holds no photograph of this campus, and the college has built no picture library on its rebuilt site. The two image sets it does publish are filed where nobody would think to look: a Library Gallery issued as a PDF from the library page, and one captioned shot of the main entrance at the foot of the history page.
The one image it is actively circulating is the admission poster, which carries a photograph of the entrance arch, the founder's statue and a crowd of students across its top third. That is the college's own picture of itself, and it is the honest thing to look at before a visit. Nothing has been lifted from a directory listing to fill this space.
