About AILET

The AILET exam is National Law University Delhi's own entrance test, and it fills two programmes only: the five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and the one-year LL.M. AILET 2027, for admission in 2027-28, is fixed for Sunday, December 13, 2026, and the online form stays open until November 10, 2026. For AILET 2026, 23,960 candidates registered for the undergraduate test alone.

AILET stands for All India Law Entrance Test. The AILET 2027 Notification, dated July 23, 2026, says National Law University Delhi will conduct AILET 2027 for admission to its five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and LL.M. programmes for the academic year 2027-28, on December 13, 2026 from 02:00 PM to 04:00 PM.

The score has one use. The AILET 2027 FAQs describe AILET as the test NLU Delhi conducts "for admission to UG (B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) Programme) and PG (LL.M. (One Year) Programme) Programmes offered by the National Law University Delhi", and answer the question of entry through CLAT or LSAT with "No, any candidate who wishes to secure admission at NLU Delhi will have to appear in AILET."

AILET does not cover NLU Delhi's Ph.D. or its specialised master's programmes. Those are filled through a separate paper, the All-India Entrance Test (AIET), on the schedule given on the university's AIET 2027 page.

Important dates

NLU Delhi's AILET 2027 notification, admission announcement and FAQs set the following dates for the cycle:

The AILET 2027 FAQs state that NLU Delhi "has started accepting the online application form w.e.f. August 07, 2026" and that "The last date for submission of online application form is November 10, 2026."

The AILET 2026 cycle kept a similar calendar. The AILET 2026 Admission Announcement, dated August 6, 2025, set Monday, November 10, 2025 as the last date for applications and Sunday, December 14, 2025 as the test date, and the AILET 2026 Result Notification announced results on December 18, 2025. In between, NLU Delhi issued a notice extending the AILET 2026 last date for online applications, so a published deadline has moved before.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

Each programme has its own eligibility page on NLU Delhi's admission portal, and applicants who are not Indian nationals follow a separate route.

B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Through AILET 2027

The B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) eligibility page sets the undergraduate floor at 45% aggregate in the Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) or its equivalent, lowered to 42% for OBC applicants and to 40% for applicants who are SC, ST or Persons with Disability. The AILET 2027 Admission Announcement adds that candidates appearing for the 12th standard annual examination in 2027 are eligible to apply.

A candidate still awaiting results may sit the test, but has to meet the marks requirement by a cut-off date that NLU Delhi notifies along with the AILET result. The eligibility page also says a candidate "placed in compartment in the year of the admission, would be treated as ineligible."

LL.M. Through AILET 2027

For the one-year LL.M., the LL.M. eligibility page makes the qualifying degree an LL.B. or equivalent from a recognised university, passed with at least 50% aggregate marks, while SC, ST and Persons with Disability applicants need 45%. The same page applies the awaiting-results and compartment rules to LL.M. applicants, and the AILET 2027 Admission Announcement allows candidates appearing for the final year LL.B. annual examination in 2027 to apply.

A Line in the Admission Announcement That the Programme Pages Do Not Repeat

Below the seat details, the AILET 2027 Admission Announcement prints: "In all the above-mentioned cases, the candidate must have secured a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate (50% for reserved categories such as SC/ST/Persons with Disability)". Neither eligibility page carries that condition, and the AILET 2026 Admission Announcement printed the same sentence beneath the same lower thresholds. For eligibility details the announcement itself sends readers to the university website, and the AILET 2027 FAQs answer their eligibility question with a pointer to each programme's menu link, yet no AILET 2027 page says how the two figures fit together. A candidate whose marks sit between them should read the programme's eligibility page and the admission announcement side by side, and put the question to the AILET helpdesk before paying the fee.

Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO Applicants

The B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) eligibility page defines Foreign Nationals as candidates who hold citizenship of a country other than India and a valid foreign passport. Applicants in that category skip AILET, must hold 65% in the 10+2 or equivalent, and are placed in merit order by their qualifying-exam percentage, the same basis the page sets for the OCI/PIO category. The AILET 2027 FAQs exempt OCI and PIO candidates from AILET too, provided they apply under that category. They may also apply separately as Indian nationals, on a second form, and under that route they sit AILET with everyone else. Unfilled Foreign National and OCI/PIO seats are carried over to the General category and filled on AILET merit.

Foreign nationals applying for the LL.M. are judged, under the LL.M. eligibility page, on an LL.B. or equivalent recognised by the UGC or the Association of Indian Universities with not less than 55% marks or the equivalent grade, and on an assessment of written and spoken English and an interview.

Step by step

Application process and fee

The AILET 2027 FAQs send every AILET 2027 applicant to the online form on NLU Delhi's admission portal, and the fee is paid online as part of that form. The application fee depends on category:

The LL.M. fee structure page places Kashmiri Migrants in the Rs 3,000 row for LL.M. applicants.

The AILET 2027 online application guidelines set out what the form asks for:

• the candidate's name and a parent's name typed as in the Class X certificate, and the date of birth as recorded there;
• a category from SC, ST, OBC, General, EWS, Persons with disabilities and Foreign Nationals, which is verified later at counselling;
• three test centres in order of preference;
• a colour passport-size photograph on a white background and a signature in black or blue pen inside a 6x3 cm box, each no larger than 1 MB;
• a BPL certificate, passport or PwD certificate only where that category is claimed, each up to 2 MB;
• payment by debit or credit card, UPI or net banking, after which an acknowledgement receipt appears in the login.

The same guidelines say the application fee is not refundable and an incomplete form will be summarily rejected. A submitted form can be deleted and filled again to fix an error, except where an SC or ST applicant has selected YES for the BPL category. The AILET 2027 FAQs add a correction window of 3 days after November 10, 2026, an automatic refund of a duplicate payment within 7 to 15 working days, and a rule that the registered email ID cannot be changed.

The two pages differ on file types and uploads. The guidelines accept a photograph and signature in .jpg, .jpeg or .png, while the FAQs name only .jpg and .jpeg, so a JPG file satisfies both. The FAQs also say no certificate other than the BPL certificate needs to be uploaded when applying, which is narrower than the guidelines' list. Reserved-category certificates are checked in original at provisional admission, and the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) seat matrix page says OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and EWS certificates should be issued on or after 1st April 2026.

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

For AILET 2027, the AILET 2027 FAQs say the admit card will be available to download in the candidate's login from November 30, 2026. In the previous cycle, the AILET 2026 admit card notification kept admit cards downloadable from November 26, 2025 until 1:30 PM on the test day, December 14, 2025.

NLU Delhi's AILET 2026 detailed instructions to candidates, dated December 12, 2025, set these rules for the sitting on December 14, 2025:

• reporting at least 1 hour and 30 minutes before the test, with entry from 1:30 pm after verification and no entry to the hall after 2:15 pm;
• carrying only a blue or black ball point pen, the admit card, a valid photo ID and photographs, and a transparent water bottle, with analog watches permitted;
• leaving behind mobile phones, digital watches, Bluetooth devices, earphones, health bands, calculators and other electronic gadgets;
• opening the sealed envelope holding the question booklet and OMR sheet only at 2:00 PM, and correcting any error in the particulars on that same OMR sheet, because no second blank sheet is issued;
• keeping the carbon copy of the OMR sheet with the used question booklet and handing in the original, since carrying the original out of the centre leads to disqualification.

The same instructions state that the admit card is provisional, subject to verification of eligibility. For candidates with disabilities, NLU Delhi's AILET 2026 guidelines for Persons with Disabilities allowed 40 minutes of compensatory time if required, at 20 minutes per hour, extending the test to 4:40 PM. Candidates with benchmark disabilities could bring their own scribe or ask NLU Delhi to arrange one through the AILET portal.

Structure

Exam pattern

Both AILET 2027 papers are offline, "Pen & Paper (OMR sheet based)" tests according to the AILET 2027 FAQs, and both last two hours. They differ in size and in how a tie is broken.

The B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Paper

The AILET 2027 B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) test pattern page sets 150 multiple choice questions for 150 marks in total, across three sections, in 120 minutes:

Under the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) test pattern page, 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer, so four wrong answers cost one mark. When candidates tie, the higher mark in Logical Reasoning decides; if the merit is still the same, the candidate senior in age is preferred, and after that a computerised draw of lots settles it.

The LL.M. Paper

The AILET 2027 LL.M. test pattern page sets 100 multiple choice questions of 1 mark each, all from different branches of law, in 120 minutes, with the same deduction of 0.25 marks per wrong answer. Ties among LL.M. candidates go first to the senior in age and then to a computerised draw of lots, with no section mark involved.

What to study

Syllabus

NLU Delhi publishes the AILET 2027 syllabus as section headings, not as topic lists. The B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) test pattern page introduces its three sections as "The syllabus of AILET 2027 for UG Programme" and adds that "Legal principles may be used in the logical reasoning section to test logical aptitude but the examination will not require any kind of legal knowledge or technical understanding." The LL.M. test pattern page says only that the questions come from different branches of law.

The papers NLU Delhi released after AILET 2026 show what those headings covered in practice. In the AILET 2026 master question booklets, the undergraduate English section opened with a reading passage on social media and misinformation, with comprehension questions on it that included an Assertion-Reason item. Current Affairs and General Knowledge took in the 2025 Wimbledon women's singles final and the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize alongside Indian art forms such as Madhubani painting. Logical Reasoning mixed letter-number series, coding, analogies, assumption questions and syllogisms, one of them built on contracts, agreements and enforceability. The LL.M. booklet opened with administrative law and jurisprudence, among them delegated legislation, the droit administratif and the authorship of the essay The Path of the Law, before questions on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Factories Act and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

How to prepare

Preparation and books

The preparation material NLU Delhi itself offers for AILET is its own back catalogue of papers. The B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) test pattern page and the LL.M. test pattern page each carry a download of previous year AILET question papers for that programme, and none of the AILET 2027 eligibility, test pattern, FAQ or notification pages names a book or a coaching programme.

Those downloads reach back past the current rules. The B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) previous year papers compilation opens with the 2008 paper, whose instructions state that there is no negative marking, and the LL.M. previous year papers compilation opens with the 2011 paper, which set an essay question alongside its multiple choice questions. The earliest papers in both files were sat under instructions that differ from the AILET 2027 test pattern pages.

The AILET 2026 paper is also available with its key. The AILET 2026 objection notification reproduced the master question booklet for each programme alongside its provisional master answer key, and its undergraduate booklet ran in the section order the AILET 2027 B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) test pattern page keeps: English at questions 1 to 50, Current Affairs and General Knowledge at 51 to 80, and Logical Reasoning at 81 to 150.

Where it is held

Exam centres

The AILET 2027 Admission Announcement lists these test cities: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Dehradun, Delhi, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Gorakhpur, Gurugram, Guwahati, Gwalior, Hisar, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Varanasi and Visakhapatnam. If fewer than 200 candidates choose a city, no centre will be created there and those candidates are allotted a test city from their second or third preference.

Applicants give up to three city preferences, and the AILET 2027 FAQs say that while the university will try to honour them, for administrative or technical reasons it "may allot any other test centre."

The AILET 2026 threshold was lower. The AILET 2026 Admission Announcement set the threshold at 100 candidates and listed Asansol, Haldwani, Jabalpur, Jamshedpur and Thiruvananthapuram, none of which appears on the AILET 2027 list. A later AILET 2026 notice on the last date and test centres dropped the Asansol centre for an insufficient number of candidates, and the AILET 2026 Result Notification records that the test was conducted in 47 test centres in 36 cities.

After the exam

Answer key

For AILET 2026, the window to contest the answer key shut less than two days after candidates left the hall, and every objection carried a fee.

The AILET 2026 objection notification, dated December 14, 2025, put the master question booklets and provisional master answer keys for both programmes on the university website and opened objections from 8:00 PM that day until 12:00 Noon on December 16, 2025. Each objection cost Rs 500, paid online and refunded only if the objection was found valid. Objections had to be submitted through the AILET login and matched to the question numbering in the master booklet, because the paper was printed in four different series, and objections sent by email, support ticket or phone were not considered.

A committee reviewed the objections. NLU Delhi's AILET 2026 final master answer key notification, issued on the day the results were announced, attached the final keys for both programmes and said no further objections would be entertained.

Scores

Result and scorecard

NLU Delhi announced the AILET 2026 result on December 18, 2025 for the test held on December 14, 2025, and the AILET 2026 Result Notification told candidates to download their official scorecards by logging into their AILET 2026 account. The notice itself carries participation figures:

The AILET 2026 Result Notification also breaks registrations down by gender, category and state. Women accounted for 14,329 of the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) registrations, and Uttar Pradesh for 4,872 of them against 3,783 from Delhi. For all that counting, the notice prints not a single mark, not even the top score.

Scores you need

Cutoff

NLU Delhi does not state a cut-off mark in its AILET 2026 result notification or in its B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and LL.M. counselling notifications. Selection runs down category-wise provisional merit lists instead, and the AILET 2026 first provisional merit list for the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) gives each selected candidate's All India Rank, admit card number, vertical reservation category and any horizontal reservation, such as women or Persons with Disability, with no marks beside them.

The word cut-off surfaces only once in the AILET 2026 B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) counselling notification, inside its refund rule, which returns the counselling fee to registered candidates who "couldn't secure a place in any provisional merit list due to higher cut-offs."

Getting a seat

Counselling and seat allotment

AILET 2026 counselling ran through the candidate's own AILET login, from the invitation posted there to the fee payments and the provisional offer letter, and the AILET 2026 LL.M. counselling notification says the process "shall be conducted exclusively in online mode". For AILET 2027, the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) seat matrix page says the university will notify the counselling process when it announces the AILET 2027 result.

In the AILET 2026 round, the AILET 2026 B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) counselling notification and the AILET 2026 counselling invitees notice invited candidates on December 19, 2025, category by category, "in a ratio of approximately three candidates for each available seat", with online counselling registration and fee payment closing at 11:00 a.m. on December 27, 2025. The counselling registration fee in the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) notification was Rs 30,000 for General category candidates and Rs 20,000 for ST, SC, OBC, EWS and PwD candidates, and only those who registered and paid in time were considered for the merit lists.

Under the AILET 2026 B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) counselling notification, candidates on the first three lists, scheduled for January 8, January 21 and February 4, 2026, had to pay a Provisional Admission Confirmation Fee of Rs 50,000 by a deadline set for each list, January 14, 2026 for the first, with the balance due by April 30, 2026; from the fourth list onwards the complete fee was payable. The fourth list came later than planned: the same notification set it for May 5, 2026, but the AILET 2026 fourth provisional merit list for the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) is dated May 27, 2026 and gave its candidates until 11:00 am on May 30, 2026 to pay. The AILET 2026 tenth provisional merit list for the LL.M. is dated September 9, 2026 and was issued "Based on the available vacancies".

Under the AILET 2026 B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) counselling notification, refunds to registered candidates who made no provisional merit list were to begin after March 15, 2026, and the university was to hold the counselling fee for 10% of the sanctioned seats in each category until after June 30, 2026 or the close of the admission process, whichever came later. For AILET 2027, the AILET 2027 Admission Announcement states that the counselling fee is fully refunded if a candidate exits the admission process and is adjusted against the total fee if the candidate proceeds.

Where it is accepted

Participating institutes

AILET 2027 fills seats at one institution only, National Law University Delhi in Sector-14, Dwarka, and the AILET 2027 FAQs answer the question of NRI seats at NLU Delhi with a plain "No".

The AILET 2027 Admission Announcement gives the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) 110 seats on AILET merit plus 5 seats each for Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO candidates, and the one-year non-residential LL.M. 70 seats on AILET merit plus the same 5 Foreign National and 5 OCI/PIO seats, with one additional supernumerary seat for Kashmiri Migrants.

How the AILET-merit seats divide among reserved categories, and the horizontal reservations for Persons with Disabilities and for women that run across them, are set out programme by programme on the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) seat matrix page and the LL.M. seat matrix page, which is also where the university lists the authorities whose caste and category certificates it accepts.

The portal's AILET contact page prints 10:00 am to 05:00 pm, on all working days, beside that number.

Complaints about admission agents go to a different address. The AILET 2027 Admission Announcement warns that NLU Delhi "has not authorized any agent/ agency for admission" and asks applicants to write to admission@nludelhi.ac.in about anyone who seeks payment on that basis. For AILET 2026, a separate AILET 2026 notice on assistance to Persons with Disabilities set up helpdesk-ailetpwd@nludelhi.ac.in for queries from candidates with disabilities.
