About AMU Entrance

Aligarh Muslim University has no one entrance paper. Its Office of the Controller of Examinations runs separate admission tests for B.Tech, B.A.LL.B., Class XI, the MBA and a long list of other courses, while the same Guide to Admissions sends other programmes to CUET (UG), NCET, NEET or GATE. Whichever route a programme sits on decides where a candidate registers, which paper they write and which score AMU ranks them on.

The AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 sorts AMU's own courses into three kinds: T for courses selected through a centralized Admission Test, D for courses selected through a Departmental Test, and N for courses filled on performance in the qualifying examination. For other programmes the same Guide names a national test instead.

AMU conducts the Pre-Tib test itself: the NEET for Pre-Tib 2026 admission guide names it the exams conducting institute for the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine's all-India OMR-based test.

For the CUET courses, AMU keeps its own paperwork on top of NTA's. The procedure for CUET (UG) courses in the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 has candidates register for the AMU course on cuet.samarth.ac.in, take the CUET (UG) sections that course names, fill AMU's own online application form on the Controller's website with their CUET application number, and then register for AMU counselling if shortlisted. A later Controller's notice for CUET-route aspirants let candidates who had chosen AMU in CUET (UG) but not filled the AMU form submit it, and let those who had left the CUET application number off their AMU form add it, by a last date printed in that notice.

Important dates

Every form the Guide's Appendix I lists with dates for 2026-27 opened on the same day, and the closing dates fall into two groups.

The AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 set form correction windows of 8 to 10 March 2026 for the February group and 14 to 18 April 2026 for the April group, and scheduled the Bachelor and Diploma in Allied and Healthcare test for 1 May 2026. A rescheduling notice for the Allied and Healthcare test later moved that test to another day at the same venue and time, keeping the admit cards already issued valid. The same AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 fixed 31 August 2026 as the closing date for all admissions, except courses and categories notified separately. A later notice extending the closing date for admissions records the Vice-Chancellor's approval of a later last date for various courses and programmes, again except those notified separately, and that notice is where the new date is printed.

Several counselling rounds were scheduled into the second half of September 2026. The Controller's schedule for the special mop-up round, dated 10 September 2026, set that list for 14 September 2026 and fee payment for 15 September 2026, up to 5 p.m., for General Category candidates already registered and verified in an earlier round without a seat. The B.A.LL.B. counselling-cum-admission schedule, dated 9 September 2026, puts Firm List-3 on 16 September and Firm List-4 on 23 September 2026, with the late-fee grace day for Firm List-4 on 25 September 2026. Bachelor of Physiotherapy, a NEET-UG course, has its own AMU counselling schedule for Bachelor of Physiotherapy, dated 12 September 2026, which sets Firm List-1 for 20 September and Firm List-2 for 27 September 2026.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

Each AMU test carries its own qualifying rule; the minimums below are those the Guide prints for 2026-27, and every percentage is an aggregate in the qualifying examination.

On top of those minimums, the general rules in the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 apply to every test. A percentage that falls short by a decimal fraction is not rounded up. A candidate awaiting the qualifying result may apply, but anyone whose result, including a supplementary, compartmental or improvement result, is still undeclared at counselling is not considered. Persons with benchmark disabilities get a relaxation of 5% in both the qualifying marks and the admission test marks, and candidates who qualified from a Madarsa get up to three years of relaxation in the upper age limit. Wherever the Guide prescribes a B.A., B.Sc. or B.Com. as the qualifying degree, it means a four-year degree under the 10+2+4 system.

Internal Candidates and Reserved Categories

AMU still separates internal from external applicants. The AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 defines an internal candidate as one who passed the qualifying examination of AMU itself as a regular student within the three academic years before admission, and excludes anyone who took it as a private or distance-mode candidate. Internal status has to be supported with documents uploaded with the application form, or the candidate may be treated as external.

For courses filled through a Departmental Test, the AMU Procedure for Departmental Test Courses 2026-27 spells out the split: 40% of the approved intake goes on general merit, a further 40% goes to internal candidates not already selected on general merit, and the Vice-Chancellor nominates candidates from special categories against 20% of the intake. The same procedure raises both merit shares to 50% for M.Tech courses. The Guide does not print a comparable split for the centrally conducted Admission Test courses.

The special categories in Table III of the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 run from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes to children of AMU employees and alumni, candidates from distant states, NCC cadets, and outstanding sportspersons and debaters, but nomination under them does not apply to MBBS, BDS, BUMS, B.Sc. Nursing, MCA, M.Sc. Biotechnology or the M.Tech courses, among others. The Guide reserves 5% of seats for persons with benchmark disabilities over and above the approved intake wherever applicable, but within the intake for MBBS, BDS, BUMS, B.Sc. Nursing, B.Arch, postgraduate courses in the Faculties of Medicine and Unani Medicine, and the Ph.D.

Step by step

Application process and fee

AMU's application forms are filled online through the AMU Online Application Processing System, which the Controller's General Admissions page links as the application form, and one registration is enough for several courses, each needing its own form and charge. In the Guide's instructions, an AMU form moves from registration to payment like this.

1. Register with a working email address, to which the username and password are sent.
2. Fill the profile. It cannot be edited once confirmed, and a mistake found afterwards means registering again with a new username and password.
3. Upload a colour photograph on a white background, a signature and a left thumb impression, each saved in JPG or JPEG format at between 20 KB and 200 KB, according to the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27.
4. Pick up to three special categories for that form, from those already filled on the categories page.
5. Clear the processing charge in the same sitting, since the Guide treats filling the form and paying for it as one step, using UPI, a card or net banking. The form counts as submitted only once the payment status appears on the candidate's dashboard; money leaving the bank account is not proof on its own.

The processing charges and closing dates for the main 2026-27 tests were as follows.

A late fee of Rs 300 applied after the first closing date, per the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27. Once paid, the processing charge is not returned, and it cannot be moved across to a future AMU examination either. Persons with benchmark disabilities pay Rs 100 as the processing charge. An outstanding sportsperson claim costs an extra Rs 150, and a Class XI applicant who wants to be considered for the self-financing seats pays an additional Rs 200.

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

Nothing arrives by post. The AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 issues admit cards only to candidates whose complete form was submitted by the last date, as downloads from the Controller's website carrying the name, application number, roll number, photograph, signature, categories claimed, test schedule and centre address. The candidate pastes a recent colour passport photograph, the same one used on the form, onto the printed card, and is refused entry without it. For Departmental Test courses, the AMU Procedure for Departmental Test Courses 2026-27 directs the Controller's office to make admit cards downloadable at least three to five days before the test.

Unless told otherwise, a candidate may carry only what the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 lists: the admit card printed on A4 paper, a transparent black or blue ballpoint pen, one original photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, a disability certificate where it applies, and a transparent water bottle. Anything else, from a calculator or eraser to a phone, watch or food, is barred, and possession of it is treated as unfair means.

Candidates may be frisked with metal detectors on entry, so the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 wants candidates at the centre at least one hour early, and no one is let in once the scheduled start has passed. In OMR tests the answer sheet entries come first and the question booklet is handed out 15 minutes after the scheduled start, with the test duration counted from that moment. A blind candidate given a scribe, requested at the application stage, may get additional time of up to 33% of the test duration. Afterwards the invigilator keeps the original OMR sheet and the admit card, and the candidate takes home the question booklet and the carbonless copy of the OMR sheet.

Structure

Exam pattern

The papers the Controller's office set for 2026-27 differ by course group, and the main ones break down like this.

Every OMR question offers four options, and shading more than one counts as a wrong answer. The AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 deducts 25 per cent of a question's marks for each incorrect answer, so a wrong answer on a one-mark question costs 0.25, except in the B.Sc. (Nursing), Ph.D. and Community College vocational admission tests. The test schedule in the same Guide gives 2 hours for the B.Tech, B.A.LL.B., B.Com (Hons.) and Class XI papers.

B.Arch and the MBA do not end with a single written paper. Under the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27, B.Arch has two papers of equal weight: Paper I is the B.Tech paper, and Paper II is the National Aptitude Test in Architecture conducted by the Council of Architecture. The MBA merit list adds the interview, aptitude assessment or group discussion to the written score, and a candidate who qualifies in the written test must attend that stage in person to stay eligible for selection. Every Class XI paper, including the combined Class XI (Science) and Diploma in Engineering paper, is available in English, Hindi and Urdu, while the Guide's general rule makes English the medium of every test except where a paper is set in another language.

On the AMU admission test answer keys, 2026-27 page, the MBA, MSW and Master of Public Health paper appears as "CAT". That is AMU's Combined Admission Test, the name printed on the AMU Combined Admission Test syllabus, and not the Common Admission Test conducted by the IIMs.

What to study

Syllabus

AMU's syllabus files sit on the Controller's results site, where the download appears only after a candidate picks the faculty, then the level, then the course, and presses Submit. The AMU B.Tech and B.Arch Paper I syllabus runs Physics from physical world and measurement to electronic devices, heads its Chemistry section Class XI and XII, and takes Mathematics from sets and functions through calculus, vectors, linear programming and probability.

The AMU Class XI (Science) and Diploma in Engineering syllabus bases the test on the syllabi AMU prescribes for its own Class IX and X examinations, and pitches it at the standard of the qualifying examination, "which is presently almost similar to the CBSE / NCERT syllabus of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Life Sciences". Its Indo-Islamic Culture component divides into Muslims in India: An Overview for 6 marks and Sir Syed and Aligarh Movement for 4 marks, covering rulers of the Sultanate and Mughal period, Indo-Islamic monuments, Sufi and Bhakti figures, and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan's life and educational reforms.

The AMU B.A. (Hons.) Arts, Social Sciences and International Studies syllabus draws its general aptitude questions from the CBSE senior secondary curriculum in polity, history, geography and psychology, plus verbal reasoning. The AMU Combined Admission Test syllabus gives each of its four sections a 25% weight and bolts on a Health component, covering topics such as public health acts and health planning in India, only for MBA (Hospital Administration) and Master of Public Health.

How to prepare

Preparation and books

AMU's own syllabus files name reading for two of the tests. The AMU B.Tech and B.Arch Paper I syllabus lists NCERT's Mathematics Part I and Mathematics Part II textbooks for Class XI as recommended textbooks. The AMU Class XI (Science) and Diploma in Engineering syllabus ends with a suggested reading list after its Indo-Islamic Culture section, which includes a Class IX and X history textbook, Sir Syed Academy's short introduction to Sir Syed, and Qazi Zainul Aabideen's Tarikh e Millat.

Exam centres

How far a candidate travels depends on the course. Table I of the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 lists the test cities as follows.

The B.A. and B.Sc. list grew after the Guide was printed: an office memo adding Imphal as a B.A. and B.Sc. test centre records the Vice-Chancellor's approval of Imphal (Manipur) for those courses in the same session, although Table I of the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 lists Imphal only for the Class XI and Diploma in Engineering tests. The Guide also lets the University change or cancel a centre and allot any centre regardless of the preference given on the form, and it posts full centre addresses on the Controller's website before the tests begin.

After the exam

Answer key

AMU puts the answer key of every MCQ admission and departmental test up for challenge on the Controller's website. Under the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27, a challenge costs a non-refundable Rs 100 per answer and must be made online within 48 hours of the key being displayed. A committee of subject experts rules on the challenges; where it drops a question as incorrect or ambiguous, all candidates receive that question's full marks, and AMU sends no individual reply on whether a particular challenge was accepted. The result is prepared from the revised key, and the Guide rules out any request for re-evaluation or re-totalling.

On the answer keys page, each key sits beside a challenge link that opens the candidate's login on the Online Application Processing System. The Controller's page of decisions on discrepancies in admission test answer keys carries revised keys or decisions for the B.A. (Hons.), B.A.LL.B., B.Com (Hons.) and BBA, Class XI, B.Sc. Nursing and MBA, MSW and Master of Public Health tests, among others.

Scores

Result and scorecard

The Controller's results page for AMU admission tests posts up to three roll-number lists per course: a Select List, a Chance Memo List and a Special Category List. The AMU B.Tech select list for 2026-27 prints each provisionally selected roll number beside a rank, with no marks, and states that counselling will follow online with physical reporting afterwards. A score card sits behind the candidate's login on the AMU Online Application Processing System, which lists it among the downloads alongside the application form and admit card.

Under the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27, AMU sends no intimation letters to shortlisted or selected candidates, and a Chance Memo is not an offer of admission, only a place in line if a seat falls vacant. Answer sheets are weeded out four months after the result, so an admission dispute has to be filed within that time, and only the High Court at Allahabad has jurisdiction over it.

Scores you need

Cutoff

The select lists AMU posted for 2026-27 print no cutoff marks. The AMU B.Tech select list for 2026-27, the AMU B.A.LL.B. select list for 2026-27 and the AMU Class XI (Science) boys' select list for 2026-27 give roll numbers and ranks only, so the last admitted score is not on them.

In place of cutoffs, the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 sets minimum scores: no candidate scoring less than 20% in an admission or departmental test is eligible, persons with benchmark disabilities get a 5% relaxation on that, and B.Sc. Nursing demands at least 50% in its own admission test. Sportsperson and debater claimants are shortlisted for trials only if they reach the minimum marks set for the General category.

For Departmental Test courses, the AMU Procedure for Departmental Test Courses 2026-27 breaks ties first in favour of the older candidate and then in favour of the one with fewer incorrect attempts.

Getting a seat

Counselling and seat allotment

AMU runs its own counselling online at counselling.amuonline.ac.in, and its schedule for mop-up rounds lists the CUET courses and B.A. B.Ed. and B.Sc. B.Ed. alongside the courses filled through its own tests. The AMU user guide for online counselling and admission has shortlisted candidates register with their roll number, form number and date of birth, then move through choice filling, document upload, verification, fee payment and ID card details to the admission card.

Seats are filled in rounds, each ending in a Firm List. For the 2026-27 round one covering B.A. (Hons.), B.Sc. (Hons.), B.Com (Hons.), BBA, B.Tech, B.Sc. Nursing and Allied and Healthcare, the UG counselling-cum-admission schedule for 2026-27 ran registration from 25 to 27 June 2026 and put up Firm List-1 between 3 and 5 July 2026. Later, the schedule for mop-up rounds set three online mop-up lists for 8, 10 and 12 September 2026, open only to shortlisted candidates who had registered in an earlier round, been verified and not yet been offered a seat.

A candidate admitted to a lower preference is upgraded automatically if a higher one falls vacant. The AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 lets a candidate stop further upgrades by submitting an undertaking on the counselling portal on the day of admission or upgradation, and the AMU user guide for online counselling and admission adds that an upgrade to a seat with a higher fee makes the difference payable, while the earlier admission is cancelled and the fee already paid is adjusted.

Provisional admission is followed by physical reporting with original documents. A candidate without a migration certificate at reporting must give an undertaking to submit it by 30 September 2026, and a student allotted a hall of residence pays three months of dining hall charges at room allotment, per the AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27. The same Guide ties refunds on cancellation to the notified last date of admission.

For MBBS and BDS, MCC allots the seat first. The AMU instructions for MBBS and BDS admission, 2026-27 ask candidates offered admission at AMU who have not opted for upgradation to register on AMU's counselling portal before reporting to the college, using their NEET roll number, and to upload the provisional allotment letter issued by MCC with the NEET (UG) 2026 admit card and rank letter. A separate Controller's notice on BUMS institutional (internal) seats opened an AMU registration form for those seats at Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, requiring a NEET-UG 2026 score card and registration with AYUSH on the AACCC website as well as with AMU; its closing dates, without and with a late fee, are printed in that notice.

Where it is accepted

Participating institutes

AMU's own admission and departmental tests fill seats at Aligarh Muslim University only, but that includes its three outside centres. The AMU Guide to Admissions 2026-27 runs one admission process for any course taught at more than one location: B.A.LL.B. and BBA are also offered at the AMU Centres in Malappuram (Kerala) and Murshidabad (West Bengal), B.Ed. at the same two centres, and the MBA at those two and at Kishanganj (Bihar). Within Aligarh, the Guide places B.Tech at Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, the Class XI seats in AMU's own senior secondary schools, and Diploma in Engineering under University Polytechnic and Women's Polytechnic.

Pre-Tib is the exception to that AMU-only rule. The NEET for Pre-Tib 2026 admission guide lists Pre-Tib seats at Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College in Aligarh and at Unani colleges in New Delhi, Darbhanga, Patna and Punjab.
