Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design

UCEED, the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design, is a national entrance test that IIT Bombay conducts once a year. It was introduced in 2015 and screens candidates for design study at the undergraduate level rather than for engineering. A UCEED score is the route into the four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme at the participating institutes.

Admission on a UCEED score covers the B.Des programmes at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore and IIT Roorkee, along with IIITDM Jabalpur. Other institutes and universities also admit B.Des applicants on a UCEED score as result-sharing institutes, though those seats are applied for separately through each institute's own process.

The exam runs at test centres as a single three-hour paper in two parts. Part A is computer-based and mixes numerical-answer, multiple-select and multiple-choice questions across areas such as visualisation and spatial reasoning, observation and design sensitivity, analytical and logical reasoning, and language. Part B is a pen-and-paper section in which the candidate answers drawing and design-aptitude questions in a supplied booklet, with the prompt shown on the screen.

Any candidate who has appeared for Class XII for the first time in the eligible window may sit UCEED, whatever their stream. Admission itself can carry a stream condition: some institutes admit B.Des applicants from any stream, while others take only Science-stream candidates who have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. A candidate may attempt the exam a maximum of two times, in consecutive years.
