Common Entrance Examination for Design

CEED, the Common Entrance Examination for Design, is a national test for admission to postgraduate design programmes in India. IIT Bombay conducts it once a year through its Industrial Design Centre, on behalf of the Ministry of Education. IISc and several IITs also accept the score.

A qualifying score opens the route to Master of Design (M.Des) programmes, and to some design PhD programmes, at IISc Bangalore and at the IITs in Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kanpur and Roorkee, along with IIITDM Jabalpur and IIITDM Kancheepuram. Each institute then runs its own shortlisting and admission on top of the CEED result. Clearing the exam is a gateway, not a confirmed seat.

The exam runs in two parts on the same day. Part A is computer-based and objective, with multiple-choice, multiple-select and numerical-answer questions; only candidates who clear its cut-off have their Part B evaluated. Part B is written and drawn on paper, and tests sketching, design sensitivity and problem-solving. Between the two parts, the exam covers visual and spatial ability, analytical and logical reasoning, environmental and social awareness, language and creativity, and observation.

CEED is a postgraduate-level exam. You can appear if you have completed, or are in the final year of, a degree, diploma or postgraduate degree of at least three years after 10+2, or a GD Arts diploma. There is no upper age limit and no cap on the number of attempts.
