About the exam

About CEED

CEED runs as two papers in one morning, and for most candidates only one of them is ever marked. Part A is answered on a computer and is used to shortlist; Part B is written by hand in a booklet and is evaluated only for the candidates Part A shortlists, after which it carries 0.75 of the final score (CEED 2026 information brochure). One date for the next cycle is already fixed: CEED 2027 will be held on Sunday, 17th January, 2027 in the forenoon, and the office has said the rest of the details will be released by 1st October 2026 (CEED official site).

What CEED hands a candidate is permission to apply, and nothing past it. IIT Bombay runs the exam through its UCEED-CEED Office as the qualifying test for Master of Design admission at IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIITDM Jabalpur and IIITDM Kancheepuram, and for PhD programmes in design at several IITs and design schools (CEED 2026 information brochure).

What the paper is trying to measure is set out plainly in the same document: aptitude for design involving visual perception ability, drawing skills, logical reasoning, creativity, communication, and problem solving skills (CEED 2026 information brochure). The two parts do not split that list cleanly. The computer-marked hour carries the reasoning, language and awareness topics; the hand-written paper carries drawing, communication and problem identification; and creativity is the one thing the syllabus asks for on both sides of the morning (CEED 2026 information brochure).

The brochure is equally plain about what a qualification buys. Clearing CEED does not admit anyone to a programme. Admitting institutes may conduct further tests and interviews for the final selection, and they verify eligibility, category certificates and other documents alongside the CEED score. A CEED 2026 score is valid for one year from the date the result was declared (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Important dates

Every CEED 2026 date has already come and gone. The paper was written on January 18, 2026, the result came on March 04, 2026, and the score card download window closed on July 31, 2026 (CEED official site).

For the cycle now ahead, the only fact the office has published is the date. A notice dated May 25, 2026 states that CEED 2027 will be held on Sunday, 17th January, 2027 in the forenoon, and that the details will be released by 1st October 2026 on the official website (CEED official site). No registration window, fee or brochure for CEED 2027 has been published yet, so the calendar below is the shape of a CEED cycle rather than a set of dates for the next one.

Two of those rows moved after the brochure went out, and the brochure still carries the original pair. Its dates table closed regular registration on October 31, 2025 and late registration at 5:00 pm on November 07, 2025 (CEED 2026 information brochure). A notice dated October 31, 2025 extended the regular window to Wednesday, 5th November 2025 and the late window to 5 PM on Monday, 10th November 2025, adding that no further extension would be made; the site now shows the original dates struck through (CEED official site).

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility for CEED 2026 is a set of alternatives, and a candidate needs only one of them:

• A completed graduate degree, diploma or postgraduate degree programme of a minimum of THREE years after the 10+2 level.
• Appearing for the final examination of such a programme by July 2026.
• A passed GD Arts diploma programme at the 10+5 level by July 2026 (CEED 2026 information brochure).

The final-year route has a second shape that the eligibility paragraph does not spell out but the form in Appendix 1 does. The certificate a candidate's principal or head of department signs carries two tick boxes: one for a candidate currently in the final year, and one for a candidate who has already appeared in the final semester or year but has a backlog to clear from an earlier semester, and therefore cannot produce a course completion certificate (CEED 2026 information brochure). A pending arrear is not automatically a bar to sitting the exam.

There is no age limit to appear for CEED, and a candidate can appear for it any number of times (CEED 2026 information brochure).

One line in the eligibility section does most of the work for a candidate planning ahead: the eligibility criteria for admission at the various institutes may differ from the criteria for appearing in CEED, and the brochure tells candidates to check the admission criteria before applying for the exam. IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay, for instance, set its own bar for the 2026 M.Des intake at a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying degree, or 50% for SC, ST and PwD candidates (IDC M.Des admission brochure). A CEED qualification and an institute's own eligibility bar are two different tests.

Step by step

Application process and fee

Gender decides the CEED fee as much as category does: a woman candidate pays what an SC, ST or PwD candidate pays, whatever her own category. The form lives only on the official CEED website, and the brochure allows no other channel for it (CEED 2026 information brochure).

The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable, and the figures above exclude the service charges and processing fees a bank may levy on the payment (CEED 2026 information brochure).

The form itself is a document upload exercise, and an incomplete one is summarily rejected. A candidate uploads a recent colour photograph taken within the last 6 months, an image of the signature, and a degree or diploma certificate, or the final year mark list or provisional certificate where the final certificate is not yet in hand, or the Appendix 1 certificate from the principal where the course is not complete. EWS, SC, ST and OBC-NCL candidates upload a valid category certificate; EWS and OBC-NCL certificates issued on or after April 1, 2025 were accepted for the CEED 2026 examination, but a candidate selected for admission had to produce one issued on or after April 1, 2026. PwD candidates upload a valid UDID card or a medical certificate, which must state that the disability is at least 40% for the reservation to apply, and a dyslexic candidate adds a certificate from the principal stating that the disability is SEVERE and PERMANENT. A candidate whose name differs from the name on the degree certificate uploads a gazette notification, a marriage certificate or passport pages showing the change (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Two choices made inside the form cannot be revisited later. The category entered on the registration form is the category the CEED merit list is prepared under, so the correct certificate has to go in at this stage. And a candidate must choose THREE examination cities in order of preference, after which a request for a city change is not entertained (CEED 2026 information brochure).

A PwD candidate who needs a scribe or compensatory time asks for it here rather than at the centre. The request is made in the registration form with the PwD certificate and the Appendix 11 request letter attached, the compensatory time is 20 minutes per hour, and the letter a candidate signs records that the compensatory time for Part A and Part B is non-transferable (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

The CEED 2026 admit card was downloadable from the official website from January 02, 2026 until the examination date, and a discrepancy in it had to be reported for correction by January 08, 2026, 5:00 pm (CEED 2026 information brochure). The two official surfaces disagree on that deadline by a year: the notice on the CEED site gives the last date for rectification of discrepancies as January 08, 2025, 05:00 PM, while adding that corrections could be made only through the candidate portal and that email requests would not be entertained (CEED official site).

The morning has a hard edge at both ends. Candidates could report at the centre from 7:00 am with a printout of the admit card, because the centre records biometric information, a thumb impression and a photograph, before the exam starts, and those thumb impressions may be verified again at the time of admission. Entry after the start of the examination at 9:00 AM was not permitted (CEED 2026 information brochure).

What a candidate carries in is unusual for a computer-based exam, because one of the two papers is drawn by hand. Candidates must bring their own drawing materials, such as pens, pencils, sketch pens and colours, and must NOT bring drawing sheets into the hall. Mobile phones, calculators, analog, smart or digital watches and similar electronic gadgets are not allowed, and using an unauthorised item disqualifies the candidature. A valid original photo identity proof is required alongside the admit card, and the brochure names the accepted ones: a college-issued identity card, passport, driving license, PAN card, Voter ID, Aadhar card or a printed e-Aadhar card (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Structure

Exam pattern

CEED 2026 ran from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, with Part A from 9:00 am to 10:00 am and Part B from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Both parts are compulsory, and each part must be finished inside its own stipulated time (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Part A is the computer-based hour, worth 150 marks across 44 questions in three sections (CEED 2026 information brochure).

The MSQ partial marking is a ladder rather than a single figure, and it rewards partial certainty only when nothing wrong is ticked. Full marks of +4 go to a candidate who chooses all the correct options and none of the incorrect ones. Where all four options are correct and only three are chosen the score is +3; where three or more are correct and only two correct ones are chosen the score is +2; where two or more are correct and only one correct one is chosen the score is +1. An unanswered MSQ scores 0, and every other case scores -1 (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Part B is worth 100 marks over five questions of 20 marks each, testing Sketching, Creativity, Form Sensitivity, Visual Sensitivity and Problem Identification. Each of the five carries partial marks and none carries negative marks. The questions appear on the computer screen, but the answers are written in the answer book the invigilator provides and not into the computer; a candidate ticks a box on screen to record that a question has been answered, and the booklets are collected at the end. A PwD candidate using a scribe for Part A gets no assistance in Part B, because the questions are there to evaluate drawing skill (CEED 2026 information brochure).

The two parts are joined by a screen and a weighting. Part A marks are used only to shortlist. Part B answer books are evaluated manually ONLY for the candidates shortlisted from Part A, and the final score is then 0.25 times the Part A marks plus 0.75 times the Part B marks (CEED 2026 information brochure). A strong computer-based hour opens the door; the hand-drawn two hours decide where a candidate stands once it is open.

There is no provision for re-evaluation or re-totalling in CEED, and requests to see the answer books are not entertained (CEED 2026 information brochure).

What to study

Syllabus

Part A questions are drawn from the topics the brochure lists: visualization and spatial reasoning, covering the transformation of 2D shapes and 3D objects and their spatial relationships; practical and scientific knowledge of scientific principles and everyday objects; observation and design sensitivity, meaning the capacity to detect concealed properties in daily life and think critically about them; environment and society, as general awareness of environmental, social and cultural connections with design; analytical and logical reasoning over qualitative and quantitative information; language, as proficiency in reading and comprehending Standard English; creativity, as a grasp of verbal and non-verbal analogies, metaphors, signs and symbols; art and design knowledge of artists, designers, history and trends; and design methods and practices, covering media, materials, production processes and ergonomics (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Part B is set on a shorter list: drawing, meaning the ability to draw products, people or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, perspective and shading; creativity, as unique and diverse solutions; communication, as the skill of putting concepts and ideas across clearly with text and visuals; and problem identification, which the brochure defines as understanding the user and the context together with a knowledge of the properties of materials and their appropriate use in design (CEED 2026 information brochure).

The brochure closes the syllabus with a caution that is easy to miss. The suggested topics are exhaustive and indicative of the nature of the questions, and CEED may not cover all of them in any one year (CEED 2026 information brochure).

How to prepare

Preparation and books

The brochure's advice on preparation is short and specific. CEED is an aptitude test, so no specific textbook or guide is recommended for its preparation; what the brochure suggests instead is that candidates practise their drawing, rendering and visualization skills, and it points them to the previous years' question papers on the official website (CEED 2026 information brochure).

That archive is on the site in some depth. The downloads page carries question papers going back to CEED 2010, with answer keys alongside the papers from CEED 2020 onwards, and a notice dated January 16, 2026 records that animation file links were added to the previous year question papers for 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025 (CEED official site). The examination section of the same site also carries a sample exam interface link (CEED official site).

Where it is held

Exam centres

CEED 2026 was held in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh or Mohali, Coimbatore, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi, Ernakulam, Guwahati, Hubballi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Panaji, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Visakhapatnam (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Choosing three cities is compulsory, and the list a candidate submits is not a guarantee of any of them. If a sufficient number of candidates is unavailable in a city, that city may be dropped from the final list and its candidates allotted their second or third choice. The UCEED-CEED Implementation Committee also reserves the right to add a new city, remove an existing one, and allot a candidate a city they did not choose. No request for a change of centre is entertained (CEED 2026 information brochure).

After the exam

Answer key

Only Part A has an answer key, and the challenge window around it is short. For CEED 2026 the draft answer key for Part A and the candidates' own responses were scheduled for January 20, 2026, with comments due by January 22, 2026 at 5:00 pm and the final key on January 28, 2026 at 5:00 pm (CEED 2026 information brochure). In practice the question paper and draft key went up a day early, on January 19, 2026, with comments opening on January 20 through the candidate portal (CEED official site).

One instruction in that process is easy to miss. The order in which a question appears differs from one candidate to the next, so comments must be keyed to the Master Question Paper uploaded on the official website rather than to a candidate's own screen order, which is what lets the committee map a query to the right question (CEED 2026 information brochure). Comments go only through the candidate portal, and the notice that released the draft key adds that comments sent by email will NOT be entertained (CEED official site).

The paper itself can be revised inside that window. A notice dated January 29, 2026 recorded that an error in an image in the uploaded CEED 2026 question paper meant the files were being updated, and a second notice the same day announced the updated question paper and the final answer key for Part A (CEED official site).

Part A responses stay downloadable only until the results are declared, after which the download is disabled and no further requests are entertained (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Scores

Result and scorecard

The CEED 2026 result was declared on March 04, 2026 and the score card was available for download from March 10, 2026 through the candidate login, with no hard copy sent to anyone (CEED 2026 information brochure).

What appears on that score card depends on which side of the Part A cut-off a candidate falls. Part A marks are displayed for ALL candidates who appeared; Part B marks are displayed ONLY for the shortlisted, and all shortlisted candidates get a rank (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Several clocks run on the result at once. The CEED 2026 score card is valid for one year from the date the result was declared, and it could not be downloaded after July 31, 2026. Part B involves subjective evaluation with no model solution, so the evaluated answer booklet is never shared with the candidate, and the booklets themselves are preserved for only three months from the date the results are declared. A digital copy of the score card is kept at the CEED office for five years from the date of issue. The score card is not proof of date of birth, category or disability status (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Scores you need

Cutoff

CEED has one cut-off of its own, and it decides whose Part B gets read rather than who gets a seat. The brochure sets it by formula: the Part A cut-off for the GEN category is the average mark plus half the standard deviation of the marks obtained by ALL candidates in Part A, with both figures rounded to two decimal places. Reserved-category candidates clear a relaxed bar, at 0.9 times that cut-off for OBC-NCL and EWS candidates and 0.5 times it for SC, ST and PwD candidates (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Because of that design, the office does not publish a table of qualifying marks. What it published for CEED 2026, in a notice dated February 04, 2026, were the two inputs: the mean and standard deviation for Part A were 39.35 and 16.89 respectively (CEED official site). The scheduled announcement of cut-off marks for Part A sat a day later, on February 05, 2026, and no separate cut-off figure was posted on the site (CEED official site).

No admission cut-off comes from CEED at all. Each institute applies its own bar, and it is applied to a score of the institute's own construction rather than to the CEED mark on its own. For its 2026 M.Des intake, IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay applied a final merit list cut-off of 50 for General and EWS candidates, 45 for OBC (NC) and 33 for SC, ST and PwD candidates, on a final score that is not the CEED score alone (IDC M.Des admission brochure).

Getting a seat

Counselling and seat allotment

Each institute opens its own admission on its own calendar, and CEED's part is over before the first of them opens. The brochure sets the sequence out: after qualifying, candidates must apply to the respective institutes for admission and fulfil the other requirements, such as tests and interviews, of those institutes, and the admission announcements for the postgraduate design programmes are notified separately by each institute (CEED 2026 information brochure).

The office draws the line around itself just as firmly. The UCEED-CEED Office does not provide information about the criteria for postgraduate admission or the award of scholarship and assistance at different institutes, and queries on those subjects are not entertained; candidates are directed to the head, convener or coordinator of the design programme at the institute concerned (CEED 2026 information brochure).

What the institute's own stage looks like is worth seeing once. For the 2026 M.Des intake at IDC School of Design, applicants applied with a valid CEED 2026 score and stream-specific tasks, a category-wise IDC-CEED merit list was drawn up per stream, and a limited number of top scorers were called for a written test, which may include a material or studio test, and an interview. The final merit list score there was 70% of the CEED score plus 30% of the written test and interview marks, and a candidate also had to clear a minimum on the test and interview component, set at 10 for General and EWS, 9 for OBC (NC) and 6.6 for SC, ST and PwD (IDC M.Des admission brochure).

Where it is accepted

Participating institutes

Whether an institute sits in the brochure's programme table or only in a notice on the site changes what a candidate can expect of it. Participating institutes are the ones that table covers, where CEED is the qualifying exam for the M.Des and, at most of them, the PhD in design; the table lists a PhD alongside the M.Des at IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee and IIITDM Kancheepuram, and names only M.Des programmes for IIT Jodhpur and IIITDM Jabalpur (CEED 2026 information brochure).

Result-sharing institutes are the second tier. They do not appear in the programme table; they admit through the CEED score and receive candidate information from the office, and they join through the cycle rather than at the start of it. For CEED 2026 that list grew from October 2025 to April 2026 and ended up naming Mahindra University Hyderabad, Jain (Deemed-to-be-University) Bangalore, GLS University, MIT ID Indore at Avantika University, VIT School of Design at Vellore, Delhi Technological University, DJ Academy of Design Coimbatore, JS Institute of Design New Delhi, RV University Bengaluru, DPU Dr. D. Y. Patil School of Design Pune, the Department of Design at Tezpur University, NIT Jamshedpur, the University School of Design and Innovation at GGSIPU, and Dr Vishwanath Karad MIT World Peace University Pune (CEED official site).

The participating tier can grow mid-cycle too. A notice dated March 04, 2026 announced IIT Gandhinagar as a participating institute, with an M.Des in Integrated Design and Technology run by its Design Discipline (CEED official site).

One consequence of the data sharing is something the office itself raised. An advisory dated April 10, 2026 states that candidates were being contacted by various colleges and institutions about prospective admissions, that the office had not directly shared the data with any advertising agencies, and that it would revise its information-sharing procedures from the next year onwards (CEED official site). The brochure states the sharing plainly: information provided in the registration form is shared with the participating and result-sharing institutes (CEED 2026 information brochure).
