About NID DAT
The NID Design Aptitude Test, or NID DAT, is the entrance examination for admission to the design programmes run by the National Institutes of Design. It is conducted by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, an autonomous institution under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The first NID was established at Ahmedabad in 1961, and the institute was accorded the status of an Institution of National Importance under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014. A single DAT is common to all the NIDs.
The test is the gateway to two levels of study. At the undergraduate level it admits candidates to the four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme, offered at NID campuses in Ahmedabad, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Assam. At the postgraduate level it admits candidates to the Master of Design (M.Des) programme, offered at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. B.Des eligibility is open to those who have passed or are appearing for 10+2 in any stream, subject to a category-based age limit; the M.Des is open to holders of a bachelor's degree or a four-year diploma in any discipline.
NID DAT runs in two stages. The DAT Prelims is a written, pen-and-paper test of design aptitude covering visualization and drawing, observation and creativity, general design and material awareness, and analytical and logical reasoning. Candidates who clear the Prelims sit the DAT Mains, an in-person studio test that assesses design sensitivity through hands-on exercises, along with a portfolio review and interview.
