About GMAT

The GMAT is one of the few entrance exams an Indian candidate can sit on almost any working day of the year, and that freedom is where the planning mistakes start. There is no annual notification to wait for, so nothing forces you to read the rules before you book a seat. They are strict all the same: a retake clock, an identity document GMAC narrowed for India in 2025, a score scale that cannot be compared with the one older applicants quote, and an exam fee GMAC sets country by country rather than globally.

The Graduate Management Admission Council owns and runs the GMAT, and the test a candidate books today runs 2 hours and 15 minutes across three sections and 64 questions, with one optional 10-minute break and no writing task (GMAT exam structure, mba.com). GMAC started this version in November 2023, first called it the GMAT Focus, and later settled on calling it simply the GMAT exam (Profile of GMAT Testing: Citizenship, GMAC). That rename is why an Indian admission policy can still ask for something mba.com no longer names. IIM Ahmedabad's policy for the PGP 2027-29 batch, for one, is written around the "GMAT Focus Edition" (Admission Policy for PGP 2027-29 Batch, IIM Ahmedabad). It is asking for the exam you would book today.

The exam it replaced is now labelled the GMAT Exam (10th Edition) on GMAC's own site, with four sections and a Total Score of 200 to 800 (About the GMAT Exam, 10th Edition, GMAC). GMAC's policy contract records that the older edition was sunset on January 31, 2024 (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com).

The scale figures GMAC publishes are global rather than Indian, and they are worth reading that way. Worldwide, GMAC describes the exam as used by more than 7,700 programmes at more than 2,400 universities and institutions in 114 countries, with testing at over 600 test centres (Evaluate talent with GMAT, GMAC). Also worldwide, 93,196 GMAT exams were taken in GMAC's testing year 2025, which ran from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025 (Profile of GMAT Testing: Citizenship, GMAC). One caution on those counts: mba.com's own registration page describes 2,400 as the number of programmes rather than the number of schools, so GMAC's properties do not agree with each other and the figures read better as scale than as a census (Register for the GMAT, mba.com).

Important dates

There is no GMAT season. You pick the appointment, so the calendar that governs you is made of policy clocks rather than notification dates, and every one of them is in GMAC's policy contract.

The last of those is the one to plan backwards from. GMAC asks for the buffer because an official score can be held up by processing problems or a security evaluation, and no amount of preparation recovers a deadline missed for that reason.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

GMAC sets no academic bar for the GMAT. What it does set is an age floor and a group of testing limits, and each of them can stop a booking:

• Age. You must be at least 18 years old to schedule and sit the exam. Between 13 and 17, you may sit it at a test centre only, and only if you supply written proof of a parent's or guardian's consent before scheduling (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com).
• Gap and frequency. At least 16 days must pass after a sitting before the next one, and test centre and online sittings share a single allowance of five in a rolling 12-month period. A sitting whose score GMAC later cancels for a testing issue or a policy violation still counts against that allowance (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com).
• The long bars. A perfect Total Score, 805 on the current exam or 800 on the 10th Edition, puts you out for five years. So does asking GMAC to delete your account. Opening a second account on another email address to get around either is prohibited outright (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com).
• Accommodations. A disability accommodation has to be approved before you schedule. It is applied while the appointment is being booked and cannot be added to an appointment that already exists (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com).

School-level eligibility is a separate question and usually the stricter one. ISB, to take an Indian example that publishes its terms plainly, wants a bachelor's degree, accepts three-year Indian undergraduate degrees in full, looks for at least 24 months of full-time work experience before enrolment, and sets no minimum GMAT score at all (PGP eligibility and requirements, ISB).

Step by step

Application process and fee

Registration is four steps on mba.com: create an account, choose the online exam or a test centre, complete your profile, then schedule the appointment and pay (Register for the GMAT, mba.com).

GMAC prices the exam by location rather than worldwide, so there is no single GMAT fee and a figure quoted for another country tells an Indian candidate nothing. The Exam Payment page carries a country drop-down and states that pricing, local taxes and regulations follow the location of your test centre, or your own location if you sit the exam online (Exam Payment, mba.com). Pick India from it and these are the amounts GMAC lists, in US dollars:

Read the timing before the amount. Both ladders turn against you as the appointment approaches, so the cheapest moment to change your mind is the earliest one, and a date booked well clear of your application deadline is also the cheapest one to move. The same India entry adds that a transaction handled by the call centre can carry a further US$10, and that anyone admitted through a special programme should check their offer document, because those fees can differ (GMAT fees for India, mba.com). GMAC asks candidates to re-read this material regularly because it updates it periodically (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com), so treat the selector, not a figure copied from anywhere else, as the version that binds you on the day you pay.

Past the price list, the policy contract closes off the usual escapes. No appointment can be changed within 24 hours of its start time, and a candidate who does not turn up forfeits the whole exam fee. Vouchers and school-issued fee waivers can be applied to the exam fee but never to a rescheduling fee, cannot be refunded, sold or transferred, and are not interchangeable between the test centre and online exams (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com).

Payment takes VISA, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards, and a declined card cancels the appointment automatically, leaving you to book again (Exam Payment, mba.com).

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

The GMAT issues no admit card. What you carry to a test centre is the appointment confirmation email from Pearson VUE and your identification (Taking the exam at a test centre, mba.com).

Identification is the rule that changes most from one country to the next. GMAC's general rule is that the document must be current, valid, government issued and the original, must carry a recent photograph and your signature, and must match the name, date of birth and country of citizenship you registered with, exactly (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com). For a candidate testing in India, mba.com's country entry narrows the acceptable list to one document, an international travel passport, for the test centre and the online exam alike, and states in as many words that there are no exceptions. Turn up without one and you are not allowed to test, you forfeit the exam fee, and you pay the full fee again to book another appointment (ID requirements for India, mba.com). An expired passport fails the same way, and renewal papers do not revive it, so the passport's expiry date belongs on the same page of your notes as the appointment date. Aadhaar used to be an option for the online exam and is not one now: GMAC's notice says that starting June 12, 2025, Aadhaar cards are no longer accepted as identification for the GMAT delivered online, and that an appointment on or after that date needs another acceptable ID (Aadhaar card policy update, mba.com). That page still runs its older headline and a step-by-step walkthrough of validating an Aadhaar card during registration underneath the update, so trust the policy update at the top and ignore the instructions below it.

Nothing else substitutes. Employee and student IDs, letters from a college, photocopies, selfies, expired documents, passport cards and credit cards are all rejected (ID requirements, mba.com). The one relief GMAC describes is narrow and is not a way around a missing passport: it is for a refugee, someone granted political asylum, or anyone otherwise unable to meet the requirements of the place they are testing from, who must write to testsecurity@gmac.com at least 10 business days before scheduling and be approved before the appointment is booked (ID requirements, mba.com).

On the day itself, plan to reach the centre at least 30 minutes early for check-in, which includes a palm vein scan where the law allows it, a digital photograph and a digital signature. Phones, scratch paper, writing tools, ear plugs and lip balm go into a locker. The one optional 10-minute break comes after either the first or the second section, never both; skip it and the next section starts in 60 seconds; run over and the extra time is taken out of the section that follows; leave your desk at any other moment and the session ends (Taking the exam at a test centre, mba.com).

Structure

Exam pattern

The calculator is the detail people get wrong: it exists only inside Data Insights, and Quantitative Reasoning is worked by hand (Exam content, mba.com).

Delivery is computer adaptive, so the questions you see are chosen against the ability you have shown so far, and GMAC says it is extremely unlikely that any two candidates see precisely the same questions (Evaluate talent with GMAT, GMAC). Two controls sit on top of that. You choose the order of the three sections. And within a section you can bookmark questions and change up to three answers on the review screen, which only appears if time is left when you finish the section (GMAT exam structure, mba.com).

What to study

Syllabus

Quantitative Reasoning is 21 Problem Solving questions drawing on arithmetic and elementary algebra, and GMAC is explicit that answering them turns on logic and analytical skill rather than on advanced mathematics (Exam content, mba.com).

Verbal Reasoning is 23 Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions. Reading Comprehension is tested on main idea, supporting idea, inference, application, logical structure and style; Critical Reasoning items sit on a short passage, usually under 100 words, and ask which option strengthens an argument, weakens it, explains its flaw or supports it (Exam content, mba.com). Sentence Correction is no longer part of it, and appears now only in GMAC's description of the retired 10th Edition (About the GMAT Exam, 10th Edition, GMAC).

Data Insights is 20 questions built from five formats, and it is the section that behaves least like a conventional quantitative or verbal paper. Data Sufficiency asks when you have enough information rather than what the answer is. Multi-Source Reasoning makes you reconcile text, tables and graphics, sometimes to spot where the sources disagree. Table Analysis sorts and filters a spreadsheet-style table. Graphics Interpretation reads a chart or plot for relationships. Two-Part Analysis sets a problem with two linked answers, quantitative, verbal or both (Exam content, mba.com).

How to prepare

Preparation and books

Start with the free material before spending anything, because the free material is where you find out what you actually need. The GMAT Official Starter Kit costs nothing and carries more than 70 sample questions plus two full-length practice exams built on the same timing and scoring algorithm as the real test (Register for the GMAT, mba.com). That equivalence is the point: the first of those exams, sat cold before you study, is a measurement rather than a warm-up, and it tells you which of the three sections is really costing you marks.

Paid material follows the diagnosis rather than preceding it. GMAC publishes the Official Guide and Online Question Bank, Official Practice Questions carrying detailed answer explanations for hundreds of real questions, and further practice exams; alongside them sits a free six-week study planner for anyone who would rather be handed a schedule than build one (Prep for the exam, mba.com).

One practice-exam feature has no equivalent on the real thing. Practice score reports add a time pressure index to the breakdowns the Official Score Report already gives, so pacing that would strand you at the end of a section shows up while there is still time to fix it (Prep for the exam, mba.com).

Exam centres

The GMAT runs both at test centres and online, through GMAC's delivery partners (Plan for exam day, mba.com). The public GMAT pages on mba.com carry no browsable directory of Indian centres: the centre is chosen inside the scheduling flow, after you have an mba.com account and have picked the test centre option (Register for the GMAT, mba.com). Worldwide, GMAC counts testing at over 600 test centres (Evaluate talent with GMAT, GMAC).

Choosing between the two channels is not only about convenience, and in India it can quietly cost an application. GMAC treats both channels as the same exam under the same policies, and says openly that it does not maintain which schools accept which, leaving it to you to confirm with each programme before you book (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com). Some Indian programmes have already answered. ISB requires a valid and verified test centre based score, no older than five years from the application deadline, to admit you (PGP eligibility and requirements, ISB). IIM Ahmedabad's admission policy for the PGP 2027-29 batch tells foreign passport holders staying in India to sit the test centre administered GMAT and apply through its Supernumerary Quota (Admission Policy for PGP 2027-29 Batch, IIM Ahmedabad).

After the exam

Answer key

No GMAT answer key is published, and the reason is a clause you agree to yourself. GMAC treats the questions administered to you as copyright protected property and trade secrets, obliges you to keep every one of them confidential at all times, and counts disclosure in any form or by any means as a breach of that obligation (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com). Whatever you remember on the way out of the centre, you are contractually barred from writing down, and a published key would be the most complete disclosure there is.

Circulated keys are worth even less here than the ban suggests. The exam picks each question against the ability you have shown so far, and GMAC's position is that no two candidates are likely to see precisely the same set (Evaluate talent with GMAT, GMAC), so a list of answers leaked by one candidate would line up with almost nobody else's paper.

Your scrutiny happens on the Official Score Report instead, and it is more searching than a key would be. It breaks your performance down by section, content domain, question type and fundamental skill, shows how long you spent on each question, and records the edits you made on the review screen so you can see whether changing your mind helped or hurt (Official Score Reports, mba.com).

Scores

Result and scorecard

The Official Score Report reaches your mba.com account typically within 3 to 5 days of the exam, and occasionally takes up to 20 (Official Score Reports, mba.com). There is no cancel-or-report decision to agonise over at the end of the test, because you pick the schools after the exam, knowing exactly how you performed, rather than naming them when you book (GMAT exam structure, mba.com).

The Total Score runs from 205 to 805 and all three sections weigh equally in it (Understanding your score, mba.com). Each section is reported on a 60 to 90 scale, and every current total ends in a 5 so that nobody confuses it with the old one (GMAT Exam Scores, GMAC). It is also why a total quoted by someone who sat the old exam tells you nothing about yours. GMAC's own illustration is that a 600 and a 605 may look alike while representing very different performance on different skills. Where the two editions have to be set side by side, it points readers to its concordance tables, which line the scales up by percentile rather than by score (GMAT Exam Scores, GMAC).

Sending is governed by its own clock. Up to five programmes can be sent your report free, but only within 48 hours of the report becoming available; after that each additional report is paid for and the fee is not refundable, and a report once sent cannot be recalled (Sending your score, mba.com). Where you have taken the exam more than once, the report carries a GMAT Superscore assembled from your best eligible section scores across attempts, and any sitting cancelled for a testing issue or a policy violation stays visible on it (Sending your score, mba.com). A score can be sent for five years. Between five and 10 years old it can still be requested, provided you have not taken a GMAT in the past five years (Sending your score, mba.com).

Scores you need

Cutoff

Ask GMAC for a cutoff and you get an argument against having one. The guidance it publishes for admissions offices tells them to avoid cutoff scores outright, to reach for one only where clear empirical evidence shows that students scoring in that range did worse in the curriculum, and to be able to show that using it does not discriminate on sex, age or ethnicity (GMAT Exam Scores, GMAC). The same page tells them not to read a GMAT score against a GRE score, on the ground that the two have never been equated, and to be careful about ranking two applicants on a small gap, because a difference that size sits inside the measurement error.

ISB's published rule points the same way. It states that no minimum GMAT or GRE score is needed to apply and that it has no preference between the two tests (PGP eligibility and requirements, ISB). Where a programme does publish a working range, that range belongs to the programme and not to the exam, and it can move from one intake to the next.

Getting a seat

Counselling and seat allotment

A candidate arriving from CAT or a state CET will look for the stage that never comes. Nothing pools GMAT applications and nothing allots against them: the score is the end of GMAC's involvement, and each school shortlists, interviews and makes offers on a calendar it sets alone.

Two jobs a centralised admission authority would have done therefore fall to you. The first is eligibility. GMAC writes into its policy contract that it does not maintain school and programme requirements, that checking them directly with each school is your responsibility before you register, and that no exam fee comes back if you turn out to be ineligible for the programme you had in mind (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com). The second is delivery. Nobody forwards your result on your behalf; it reaches exactly the programmes you send it to and no others (Sending your score, mba.com).

Where it is accepted

Participating institutes

Acceptance runs programme by programme, not country by country, and each participating programme has its own GMAT code that the score report is addressed to. ISB publishes its as N2D-J5-01, and requires the testing agency to send the official report to the school directly, even where an unofficial score was uploaded with the application (PGP eligibility and requirements, ISB).

What a school receives is narrower than it sounds. Each Official Score Report carries the Total and Section Scores from the exam it belongs to, plus the Superscore where there have been several attempts, and once it has gone to a programme GMAC cannot withdraw it or switch off the school's access (Sending your score, mba.com). Checking a programme's own terms first, including whether it takes an online sitting, is worth more than checking any list of accepting institutes.

Two queries have their own address. An identification exception, for a candidate who genuinely cannot meet the ID rule, goes to testsecurity@gmac.com at least 10 business days before scheduling, and has to be approved before an appointment is booked (ID requirements, mba.com). A testing accommodation goes through the accommodations application, which must be decided before scheduling rather than added to a booked appointment (GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures, mba.com).
