About CMAT

The information bulletin that opened CMAT 2026 registration did not say when the exam would be held. Against Date of Examination, the National Testing Agency printed "To be announced later on the website", and printed the same line against the city, the admit card, the answer key and the result. The paper and the fee were settled on day one; the calendar arrived afterwards, in separate public notices. Anyone planning around the CMAT exam has to read both kinds of document, because they do not say the same things.

A CMAT score is read by a category of institutions rather than by a named list of them. The score is accepted by all AICTE-approved institutions, university departments, constituent colleges and affiliated colleges, per NTA's own introduction to the test, which is a wider and vaguer promise than a test tied to one school makes. The test has changed hands once: the All India Council for Technical Education conducted it until 2018, and the Ministry of Education entrusted it to the National Testing Agency with effect from 2019, both of which the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin states.

The CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin draws a hard boundary around what the agency owns. Everything from the application form to the score card belongs to NTA, the result data then passes to AICTE, and past that point nobody at the agency has anything to do with who gets a seat. NTA also states that it verifies none of what a candidate types into the form, which is why candidature stays provisional until an institution checks it.

The bulletin is just as direct about what a score buys. Appearing in CMAT does not make anyone qualified for admission and confers no automatic right to a seat. The institutes decide: each one publishes the CMAT score it wants, and then runs its own selection, which may include a group discussion and a personal interview.

The month pattern is stable and the dates are not. When registration opened for the 2026 cycle, the bulletin committed to this much and no more.

Those blanks were filled one at a time. CMAT 2026 was eventually held on 25 January 2026, the date carried on NTA's final answer key for the paper, and the score card went live on 17 February 2026 according to NTA's own notice.

None of the three closing dates in that table survived the cycle. NTA extended the last date for online applications by public notice, and the fee deadline and the correction window moved with it; both notices sit on the CMAT notices page with the rest of the cycle's paper trail. The table above is what the bulletin committed to on day one, not what the cycle finally ran to. On CMAT the notices overwrite the bulletin, and the bulletin's own schedule is the first thing they overwrite.

For the next cycle there is nothing to track yet. That same notices list runs only to the CMAT 2026 result announcement, and no CMAT 2027 notification, bulletin or schedule has been published on the official site.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

The bulletin sets three conditions for CMAT 2026, and not one of them is about marks.

• A bachelor's degree in any discipline. Candidates in the final year also qualify, provided the result is declared before admission for the academic year begins.
• Indian citizenship.
• No age restriction at all.

Two more requirements sit outside that chapter, down in the bulletin's general instructions, and they are the ones candidates walk past. The bulletin requires the degree to be recognised under AICTE provisions, and says candidature or result will be cancelled if it later turns out not to be. It also tells candidates to verify the criteria of eligibility for admission with the institutions they intend to apply to, because an institution may want a minimum percentage in the degree where CMAT itself asks for none. NTA does not adjudicate any of that at the registration stage.

Step by step

Application process and fee

The CMAT website is the only channel. A form submitted in any other mode is not accepted, and more than one form from the same candidate gets the result cancelled. The bulletin breaks the process into registration, the form itself, payment and the confirmation page, and it treats that last page as the only evidence an application exists: until the fee transaction succeeds and the page generates, the candidature has not been made.

The uploads carry the one mistake the bulletin offers no way back from. It fixes each of them to the kilobyte: a recent photograph against a white background showing 80% of the face with the ears and no mask, JPG or JPEG of 10 kb to 200 kb; a signature, JPG or JPEG of 10 kb to 50 kb; and where one applies, a PwD, PwBD or UDID certificate as a PDF of 50 kb to 300 kb, per the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin. If the photograph or signature is blurred or cannot identify the candidate, the application is rejected and no correction is offered.

The fee turns on two things at once, category and gender.

General-category men were the only applicants paying the higher amount; every other applicant paid the same lower fee. Nothing can be paid offline, and whichever of net banking, card or UPI a candidate picks, the bank or payment gateway charges its own processing fee and GST over and above the examination fee. Once remitted the money does not come back: the bulletin refuses refunds in all circumstances, does not carry the fee forward to another cycle, and forfeits it outright if the candidate does not turn up.

The correction window is one shot. NTA's correction notice for CMAT 2026 freezes the form once corrections are submitted, and it splits the fields in two. Mobile number, e-mail address and address cannot be changed at all. Candidate name, father's and mother's names, Class 10 and Class 12 details, bachelor's degree details, date of birth, gender, category, sub-category, photograph and signature can be. Examination city preferences can be changed too, and any of these may attract an additional fee before the change takes effect.

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

The admit card is issued provisionally, downloaded from the CMAT website, and never posted. No duplicate is issued at the centre, and the bulletin is explicit that holding one does not mean eligibility has been accepted; that gets scrutinised later in the admission process.

What has to travel with the candidate is a fixed list: the printed admit card on A4 with the self-declaration filled in, a simple transparent ball point pen, one extra passport photograph for the attendance sheet, and one original, valid, unexpired photo ID from a closed set that runs school identity card, PAN card, passport, Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar with photograph, Class 12 board admit card with photograph, or bank passbook with photograph. A PwD or PwBD certificate comes along if relaxation is being claimed, and diabetic candidates may carry sugar tablets or fruit.

Everything else is barred. Frisking with metal detectors is compulsory, and the banned list covers written or printed material, geometry and pencil boxes, calculators, log tables, scales, erasers, pen drives, electronic pens, phones, earphones, Bluetooth devices, health bands, watches and bracelets, wallets, goggles, belts, caps, ornaments, and any food or water. Reporting is required two hours before the examination starts, and candidates wearing articles or objects of faith are told to be there two hours before the last reporting time, so that frisking does not eat into their own. Carrying one of those items is not treated as a lesser offence than cheating. The bulletin's definition of unfair means opens with being in possession of any prohibited item, and a candidate booked under it may be debarred from NTA examinations for three years and is liable to criminal action besides, per the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin.

Candidates with disabilities have their own set of provisions. NTA supplies a scribe on request; a candidate bringing their own must submit the scribe's details in advance, and that scribe's qualification has to be one step below the candidate's own. The CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin puts compensatory time at not less than 20 minutes per hour of examination, which works out to at least an extra hour on a paper of three hours for anyone eligible to use it, whether or not a scribe is actually used.

Structure

Exam pattern

Five sections of 20 questions and 80 marks each add up to 100 questions and 400 marks in 180 minutes, per the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin. The equal split is the point: general awareness and innovation and entrepreneurship carry exactly the same weight as quantitative techniques and data interpretation, so a candidate cannot treat either of them as a section to sacrifice.

The medium is English only, and the arithmetic of the marking is unforgiving in one direction. A correct response earns 4 marks and an incorrect one costs 1, so four wrong answers wipe out a right one; an unattempted question costs nothing at all, per the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin. If a question is dropped for a technical error, every candidate gets full marks for it whether or not they attempted it. If the key changes after the challenge process, only candidates whose response matches the revised key are awarded the marks.

Ties are settled by rule rather than by a tie-breaker section. The all-India rank runs off the total score, candidates on the same score are ordered by date of birth with the older candidate placed first, and identical merit numbers are shared, so the next candidate after two at merit 2 is placed at merit 4.

What to study

Syllabus

The word syllabus does not appear anywhere in the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin. Search the whole document and it is not there once. What the bulletin does instead is name the five segments the paper evaluates, fix 20 questions and 80 marks against each, state that the medium is English, and stop.

A detailed CMAT topic breakdown is therefore somebody's reading of the paper, not the conducting body's specification of it, however confidently it is laid out. The five segment names and their equal weights are the whole of what NTA has committed to in writing, and they are what a study plan can safely be built on.

How to prepare

Preparation and books

The bulletin names no book and no reading list. Nor do the public notices NTA issued across the cycle, which are administrative from first to last, as their titles on the CMAT notices page show: an advertisement, an advisory, an extension, a correction window, a schedule, a scribe portal, a city intimation, admit cards, keys, a result. So preparing against official material means preparing against the four things the bulletin does fix, and the fourth is the one candidates leave until the day: the five segment names, the equal weighting, the marking arithmetic, and the screen.

Appendix VII of the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin sets out that screen. The keyboard attached to the terminal stays disabled for the whole examination, so the paper is answered entirely by clicking an option. Answers save themselves on Next or Previous, a question can be bookmarked for a second look, and the paper auto-submits the moment time expires, with nothing afterwards to check anything against. Rough work goes on sheets issued at the centre, each signed with name, roll number and seat number on both sides, and every sheet is handed back before a candidate leaves the room.

The look at your own paper comes later, and briefly. NTA displays the question paper each candidate attempted next to their own recorded responses ahead of the result, for the same two to three days the provisional key is up.

Appendix I of the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin lists 131 cities, arranged by region and then by state, and the application form asks for four of them in order of preference. Cities with very few applicants can be merged, and the allotted city can fall outside the four chosen, for administrative or logistical reasons; the bulletin advises picking a home city and neighbouring ones rather than distant states.

The city arrives before the centre does, and in a separate document. NTA issues an advance intimation of the examination city ahead of the admit card, which appears on the CMAT notices page as a public notice of its own, and that slip names a city, not a venue. The exact centre appears only on the admit card.

After the exam

Answer key

Challenging the CMAT answer key costs money, per question. NTA displays the provisional answer key together with the question papers and recorded responses, typically for two to three days, and a candidate who disagrees pays Rs 200 per question challenged as a non-refundable processing charge, per the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin. Challenges without justification or evidence are not considered, and neither is anything filed outside the official link.

Subject experts examine every challenge, a final key is published, and the result is compiled from that final key alone. Nobody is told individually whether their challenge succeeded, and once the result is out, no grievance about the key is entertained at all. For the 2026 cycle the final key appeared on NTA's answer key notice page on 17 February 2026, the same day as the score card.

Scores

Result and scorecard

Score cards are downloaded from the CMAT website and are not dispatched to anyone. A CMAT mark once published is the mark. The bulletin shuts the door on re-evaluation, shuts it on re-checking, and shuts the correspondence along with it.

Percentile is how CMAT reports performance, and the bulletin defines it precisely: the percentage of candidates in a session who scored equal to or below a candidate's raw score, computed to seven decimal places to reduce ties. It is not a percentage of marks. Normalisation turns raw marks into that scale only where a paper is spread across more than one session, and the bulletin reserved the right to spread this one, noting that the examination might be held on multiple shifts depending on the number of candidates. It did not come to that. NTA's press release on the result records the paper as having run in a single shift, and its final answer key carries one exam date and one shift label, so no cross-session conversion arose and the score card reported raw marks alongside the percentile.

Two deadlines then close the cycle quietly. The CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin preserves the examination record for up to 90 days from the declaration of the result, and requires any grievance arising out of that result to be raised within 30 days of it, with Delhi courts holding jurisdiction.

Scores you need

Cutoff

A CMAT cutoff is not a number NTA withholds. It is a number NTA never sets. The official introduction to the test hands the job down the line: each participating institution releases its own cut-off CMAT score, and a candidate must meet that institution's score to qualify for admission to that institution.

The bulletin also records how little the agency knows about what happens next. NTA does not collect information on the total number of seats available in the institutions, or on the reservation criteria those institutions follow, per the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin. A figure circulating as the CMAT cutoff is one institution's bar, for one programme, in one admission year.

Getting a seat

Counselling and seat allotment

Whatever a CMAT score is worth, it is worth it one institution at a time. The bulletin puts the candidate in charge of moving it: apply separately to each participating institution with the CMAT score, meet the cut-off that institution publishes, then sit whatever it runs next, which the bulletin says may comprise a group discussion and a personal interview, with final selection resting on performance in those. There is no common round in which those applications meet, and no allotment that happens above the level of the single institution.

Reserved seats are an institution's arithmetic; the exam does nothing with them. For institutes run by the central government the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin sets 15% of seats for Scheduled Castes, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes, 27% for Other Backward Classes in the non-creamy layer on the central list, and 10% for the general economically weaker section, with 5% for persons with disability or benchmark disability inside each of those categories. Institutes run, aided or recognised by state governments follow their own state's reservation policy instead.

Where it is accepted

Participating institutes

There is no roster to look up. The CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin defines the participating institutes of CMAT 2026 as "the Institutions which will be accepting the CMAT Score" and leaves it there. What NTA publishes in place of a list is a category: the score is accepted by all AICTE-approved institutions, university departments, constituent colleges and affiliated colleges.

One named route does appear in the official text. NTA's introduction page records that candidates seeking MBA admission in colleges affiliated to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, which were earlier covered by UPSEE, had to apply through CMAT, because the CMAT score sheet is what AKTU uses for those seats. Beyond that, checking acceptance means checking each institution's own admission page.

NTA prefers e-mail, and it answers only signed queries. The helpline for CMAT is cmat@nta.ac.in, and the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin prints the contact numbers as 011-40759000 and 011-69227700. Anonymous mail, mail without a postal address and contact number, and mail from anyone claiming to represent a candidate are all refused, as are questions about NTA's internal documentation or decision-making. Legal notices go to a separate address, legal@nta.ac.in.

NTA takes no paperwork. The whole CMAT process is online, uploads and fee included, so the CMAT 2026 Information Bulletin tells candidates they are not required to send the agency any document through post, fax, WhatsApp, e-mail or by hand, and it will not entertain a correction that arrives by one of those routes either.
