UPES Law Studies Aptitude Test

ULSAT, the UPES Law Studies Aptitude Test, is the entrance examination the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun uses to admit students to its School of Law. Scores count only for UPES; no other law school accepts the test.

The test runs at two levels. At undergraduate level it feeds the five-year integrated degrees (BA LL.B., BBA LL.B. and B.Com LL.B.) and the three-year LL.B.; the postgraduate variant, ULSAT-LLM, is the route into the LL.M. Candidates take a computer-based paper online under remote proctoring, on their own device under supervision rather than at a fixed centre.

Eligibility for the five-year integrated programmes is a minimum of 50% in Class X and XII. The three-year LL.B. adds a graduation requirement, and ULSAT-LLM requires an LL.B. with at least 50%. UPES also runs alternative routes: candidates who meet qualifying CLAT, CUET or LSAT-India scores can be admitted without sitting the test.

The UG syllabus covers language comprehension, quantitative and numerical ability, logical reasoning, legal general knowledge and legal aptitude, spread across five sections of 30 questions each. The ULSAT-LLM paper draws on core law subjects such as constitutional law and jurisprudence, and asks candidates for a statement of purpose.
