Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (Screening Test)

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), also called the screening test for foreign medical graduates, is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). It applies to Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India who hold a primary medical qualification, an MBBS-equivalent degree, from an institution outside India. The test was introduced under the Screening Test Regulations, 2002.

FMGE is a qualifying test, not an admission exam. Candidates who pass may apply to the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council for provisional or permanent registration, and that registration is what lets a foreign-trained doctor practise medicine in India. NBEMS conducts the test, publishes the result, and passes it to the National Medical Commission and the State Medical Councils.

The exam is at the undergraduate level and is conducted as a computer-based test at centres across India, usually in two sessions a year. Its syllabus follows the MBBS-equivalent curriculum, spanning pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects. Eligibility is limited to Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India whose foreign medical qualification is recognised for practice in the country where they earned it, with the required certificates in hand. There is no age limit and no cap on the number of attempts.
