About SAT

On College Board's SAT Acceptance in India chart, admission of Indian residents and admission of foreign nationals and nonresident Indians sit in separate columns, and three universities are marked for the second group only. A candidate in India therefore has reason to read a university's own SAT policy before booking a date. The test is the digital SAT, taken on a laptop or tablet at a test centre, with an international fee on top of the registration fee and an ID rule College Board writes for India.

Reading and Writing and Math are the two sections, and the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide says taking the SAT lets a student apply to universities in the United States and around the world.

Testers outside the United States switched first. The College Board Blog: Everything You Need to Know About the Digital SAT, posted on 4 January 2024, says students testing outside the U.S. first started taking the digital SAT in spring 2023, and students in the U.S. from spring 2024.

College Board's SAT Suite Test Dates and Deadlines page carries the SAT Weekend calendar for August 2026 to June 2027, says these dates and deadlines apply to all students, U.S. and international, and that SAT Weekend deadlines expire at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time in the U.S.

Under the table, the dates page adds that a student borrowing a testing device from College Board must register and request it at least 30 days before test day, and that late registration is available worldwide for an additional fee. It also lists anticipated SAT Weekend dates for 2027-28: 28 August, 18 September, 2 October, 6 November and 4 December 2027, then 4 March, 6 May and 3 June 2028.

The dates page reserves Sunday testing for students who cannot test on Saturdays for religious reasons, and College Board's Policies for International Testing page says Sunday testing isn't available in India.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

Class XI or XII appears on College Board's India pages as a condition for a fee discount, not for the test. Registration itself takes a current grade level and the name of a high school, per the SAT Registration and Test Day Guide, and neither that flyer nor the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide names a qualifying mark or an age limit. Five kinds of candidate meet extra conditions on College Board's pages:

• Under 13. A parent or guardian must complete and submit the Account Creation Consent form before the student can register, according to the Students Under 13 page.
• 21 or older on test day. Only an official government-issued photo ID is acceptable, and student ID cards aren't, per SAT ID Requirements.
• Homeschooled. Enter 970000 as the high school code, per the FAQ on the Registering page.
• Disability. The school must request College Board approval for accommodations at least seven weeks before the test date, says the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide.
• Fee waivers. The same guide offers them to eligible students in the U.S. or U.S. territories, and students attending school outside the country must also be U.S. citizens.

Step by step

Application process and fee

Registering takes about 30 minutes and can be paused and finished later, says College Board's Registering page, and the SAT Suite contact details page says first-time registration can only be done online. From a free College Board account:

1. Look up test centres and pick a date, considering more than one location because not every centre has seats.
2. Enter your full legal name as it appears on your photo ID, date of birth, gender, mailing address, phone number, current grade level and high school, the fields the SAT Registration and Test Day Guide lists.
3. Upload a photo. Under College Board's SAT Photo Requirements, a photo that breaks the rules means you won't be allowed to test, and an upload success message confirms only the file type and size. Changing Your Registration Info allows a new photo until 5 days before the test date.
4. Choose the type of testing device you will use, then pay.

What It Costs From India

College Board's International Fees page, written for students testing outside the United States, says "The SAT registration fee is $68, plus a $43 international fee." It prints every amount with a dollar sign and no currency code. The additional registration fees sit in a table captioned "Fees Through December 2026", which the page says are the same whether a student tests inside or outside the United States; the score-service fees follow in a second table that carries no date.

The International Fees page's list of centres known to charge the $24 test center fee for August 2026 to June 2027 names centres in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan and none in India, while still telling candidates to contact their test center for the latest information. Payment is by credit card (American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, UnionPay or Visa) or PayPal, per College Board's Payment Methods page.

College Board's India Scholars Program page, which carries no date, offers SAT registration discount vouchers to income-eligible students who live in India and are in Class XI or XII: 90% off where annual family income is less than Rs 8 lakh, and 50% off where it is between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 15 lakh. It says every eligible student who applies gets a voucher, used when registering online, and it does not say whether the discount reaches the international fee.

Changing or Cancelling a Registration

A new test date means cancelling and registering again, while a change of test centre alone is made in your College Board account, per Changing Your Registration Info. That page gives 6 p.m. ET on the Monday before the test as the deadline to contact SAT support about name, date of birth or gender, whereas the SAT ID Requirements page asks for a name change at least 30 days before the intended test date. Acting 30 days ahead satisfies both pages.

Cancelling happens in My SAT. College Board's Canceling a Registration page charges $34 before the change deadline and $44 after it, up to Thursday 11:59 p.m. ET before test day, and refunds the full registration fee in either case. The Refunds page says the money returns to the original form of payment, with processing beginning 3 to 5 business days after cancellation, that score reports ordered with registration are refundable only if you are absent on test day, and that rush score reports can't be refunded. Neither page mentions the international fee.

Arriving late is treated like not arriving: What to Expect on Test Day says a late or absent candidate must register again, with the standard testing fees applying. The SAT Testing Rules, revised on 19 May 2026, give no refund to anyone who leaves the test after starting.

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

Bluebook, the app the SAT is taken in, generates the admission ticket at the end of exam setup. The 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide says a test card appears in Bluebook five days before the test date, and that setup, done within those five days, means watching a short video, confirming your information, agreeing to the Testing Rules and completing a device check. The ticket can be photographed, emailed or printed, and College Board's What to Bring on SAT Test Day page says a printed ticket is preferred.

Passport or Aadhaar

College Board's SAT ID Requirements page opens with a warning that the admission ticket isn't enough to get you into the test center. Its rule for testing in India starts: "Acceptable forms of identification are either a valid passport (with your name, photograph, and signature), a U.S. Department of War (DoW) Common Access Card (CAC), or a valid Aadhaar PVC Card with your name and photograph." The next sentence reads: "Only the letter and PVC Card forms of Aadhaar ID are valid." The third reads: "The letter must be hard copy format as issued by the government of India in its original form (printouts, copies, screenshots, or e-cards are not acceptable)."

The first of those sentences names the PVC card and not the letter; the second accepts both, and the page does not reconcile them. The Aadhaar PVC card is the one format both sentences name.

The same page's general checklist asks for an original, physical, unexpired ID with a recent photograph, legible English-language text and your full legal name exactly as it appears on the admission ticket, and it refuses digital IDs. A candidate who travels to another country to test must use a valid passport, the Common Access Card being the only exception.

On the Day

College Board's What to Bring on SAT Test Day page asks for a fully charged device with Bluebook installed and exam setup completed, the admission ticket, the physical photo ID, pencils or pens for scratch work, and your College Board username and password. A handheld calculator is allowed, and the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide marks it as not required, for anyone who prefers one to the Desmos calculator inside Bluebook. A phone brought to the centre must be turned in to the proctor and stored away from your desk, per the SAT Registration and Test Day Guide.

College Board's sample Saturday schedule on What to Expect on Test Day has students check in at 7:45 a.m., doors closing at 8 a.m. and testing starting between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. The page tells candidates to confirm their own centre's arrival time on the admission ticket and says no one is admitted once testing has started.

Bluebook runs on a Windows laptop or tablet, a Mac laptop, an iPad or a school-managed Chromebook, and not on a personal Chromebook or a mobile phone, according to SAT Device Readiness. College Board's Changes for 2026-27 Testing page adds that Bluebook requires Windows 11 from the August 2026 SAT Weekend. Borrowing a device means requesting one at least 30 days before test day, and the Device Lending page says a request is not a guarantee, loaned devices are shipped to test centres, and borrowers arrive 30 minutes early.

For test takers in certain locations outside the United States, which they do not name, the SAT Testing Rules let College Board use a biometric-enabled system: only with the candidate's separate consent, it may capture photos or video through the device's front-facing camera and compare them with the photo ID provided during registration.

Structure

Exam pattern

Each section is divided into two equal-length modules. College Board's How the SAT Is Structured page says the first module of each section mixes easy, medium and hard questions, and how you perform on it makes the second module either more or less difficult. The same page puts a 10-minute break between Reading and Writing and Math, and totals the test at 134 minutes and 98 questions.

Pretest questions don't affect scores. College Board's How Are Scores Calculated? page explains that scoring uses item response theory, so two students with the same number of correct answers in a section may earn different section scores depending on the difficulty of the questions each answered correctly, and it says that for most students guessing is better than leaving a question blank.

There is no returning to a module once you have moved on from it, says What to Expect on Test Day; until its time expires, you can move back and forth between that module's questions and review answers.

The two sections ask questions in different shapes:

• Reading and Writing. Short passages or passage pairs of 25 to 150 words, each followed by a single multiple-choice question (The Reading and Writing Section).
• Math. Approximately 75% of questions use a 4-option multiple-choice format and the rest are student-produced responses, where you enter your own answer (Student-Produced Responses); approximately 30% are set in a science, social studies or real-world context (The Math Section: Overview).
• Calculator. A built-in Desmos calculator, switchable between scientific and graphing, is available for the entire Math section, per the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide.

What to study

Syllabus

College Board splits each section into four content domains, and the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide gives each domain a question distribution for the adaptive version of the test.

Reading and Writing passages represent literature, history and social studies, the humanities and science, and questions testing similar skills are grouped together and arranged from easiest to hardest, according to the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide.

How to prepare

Preparation and books

Practice for the digital SAT happens in the same app the test runs in. College Board's Full-Length Digital Practice Tests on Bluebook page describes:

• Test preview. A short, untimed set of questions with no scores or feedback on your answers.
• Full-length practice tests. Timed like the real test, except that you can move on to the next section before time expires; scored, with scores and questions reviewed in My Practice.
• Student Question Bank. Thousands of official SAT Suite questions, filtered by section, domain, skill and difficulty.
• Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy. Free practice questions, videos and lessons, reached from My Practice.

The page cautions that trying a built-in accommodation during practice does not mean you are approved to test with it. The 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide recommends the downloadable PDF practice tests only for students testing with paper-based accommodations, because those versions are nonadaptive.

Where it is held

Exam centres

Going digital did not bring the SAT into candidates' homes. College Board's January 2024 blog post on the digital SAT lists "administering the test in schools or test centers with a proctor present (not at home)" among the things staying the same.

Centres are found through College Board's SAT Test Center Search, and seat availability shows only during registration, which is why the Registering page suggests considering multiple locations. The Waitlist that places students automatically when a seat opens is for students testing in the United States, per Changes for 2026-27 Testing.

Closures are checked twice: the SAT Registration and Test Day Guide tells candidates to look at College Board's test center closings page on the Friday night before the test and again on Saturday morning. Under the SAT Testing Rules, a centre may close at any time up to and including test day; College Board then tries to arrange a makeup test or a move to another centre, and may refund the registration fee at its discretion if neither is feasible.

After the exam

Answer key

College Board's SAT Score Verification page says the Question-and-Answer Service (QAS) and Student Answer Service (SAS) aren't available for the digital SAT, and the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide describes no release of answers in their place.

Score verification remains. The SAT Score Verification page says verification is performed only once per test and must be requested within 5 months of test day, by calling Customer Service on +1-212-713-8000 from countries other than the U.S. and Canada. College Board's International Fees page prices it at $55.

A suspected error or ambiguity in a question should be reported to the test coordinator immediately after the test, and College Board also takes reports through an online form. The SAT Suite contact details page sets the deadline for those reports at 11:59 p.m. ET on the fourth weekday after the test administration, and the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide warns that a report may lead College Board to hold the score past its published release date.

Scores

Result and scorecard

Each section is scored from 200 to 800 and the total, the sum of the two, from 400 to 1600, per the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide, which points students to their account at studentscores.collegeboard.org.

Most scores from weekend tests are released 2 to 4 weeks after test day, according to the score release page.

Online, a student sees more than the PDF shows. College Board's Fall 2026 SAT Weekend Understanding Scores for Students and Families lists percentile ranks against all testers in the student's country and against all testers, domestic and international, from the last three years of SAT Weekend and SAT School Day administrations, and says the online view indicates whether each section-level readiness benchmark was met. The How Are Scores Calculated? page puts the College and Career Readiness benchmarks at 480 for Reading and Writing and 530 for Math.

A score can be cancelled no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time one week after the test date, and a cancelled score can't be reinstated or reported to you or any institution (Canceling Your SAT Weekend Scores).

For older scores, College Board's Sending Archived SAT Scores page describes archiving: scores are archived once a student has left high school and not tested for a year, can still be sent on request, and are no longer accessible if older than 2005. The page states no validity period, and warns that reports sent five or more years after a test date may be less valid predictors of college academic performance.

Scores you need

Cutoff

A total SAT score of 1300 appears on College Board's India Scholars Program page as a scholarship line rather than an admission cutoff: income-eligible students living in India who reach it may qualify for a merit-cum-need scholarship at participating universities, with full tuition through graduation where family income is less than Rs 8 lakh. Universities select recipients from that pool among students who meet all their other admission requirements.

Admission scores are left to each school. College Board's What Is a Good Score? page puts it in admissions terms, "a good SAT score is one that helps you get admitted to a college you want to go to", and says each school has its own score expectations. The Parents FAQs: SAT page describes superscoring, where a college combines a student's highest section scores even if they come from different test dates, and says some colleges require all scores to be sent while others ask for just one.

Getting a seat

Counselling and seat allotment

Being contacted by a university after a score send is not an offer. College Board's Sending Scores from SAT Weekend page says such contact does not mean you have been admitted, and that you must submit an application to be considered.

Each SAT Weekend registration includes free score sends to up to four colleges, universities or scholarship programmes, designated at registration, any time before the test or within 9 days after it, according to the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide. Additional reports, and reports ordered after that time, cost $15 each on the International Fees page.

The Sending Scores from SAT Weekend page sets out how sends work:

• Institutions generally require scores sent directly by College Board and will not accept printouts or copies of score reports.
• Standard sends go electronically, typically within 5 to 10 business days of the order; rush sends go within 1 to 4 business days and only for scores already released (Sending Scores from SAT Weekend).
• Scores from an entire test date are sent together, so a Math score from one date cannot travel with a Reading and Writing score from another.
• College codes for score sends are listed on BigFuture.

Score Choice lets a student who has tested more than once choose which test dates to send, but not for the free score sends. Without it, the 2026-27 SAT Weekend Student Guide says, College Board sends all SAT scores from your most recent six administrations.

Where it is accepted

Participating institutes

College Board's SAT Acceptance in India chart lists Indian universities with their score send (DI) codes and yes-or-no columns for admission of Indian residents, admission of foreign nationals and nonresident Indians, free score sends, the India Scholars Program and B.Tech or engineering programmes.

The two admission columns do not always agree. The chart marks International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and BITS Pilani Vidyavihar Campus as using the SAT for foreign nationals and nonresident Indians but not for Indian residents. It also carries its own caution: the details are for reference only, may not reflect the institutions' most recent policies, and should be checked on each institution's website or with the institution directly.

College Board's India Global Higher Education Alliance page says "Almost all alliance members accept SAT scores as part of their admissions process," without naming the exceptions. Its member list names Indian universities including Ashoka University, FLAME University, KREA University, Plaksha University and Shiv Nadar University, and affiliate members outside India including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge.
