About PTE Academic

PTE Academic is Pearson's computer-based English test for study abroad and for Australian and New Zealand visas, taken at a test centre and scored mainly by AI. Pearson sells it next to three similarly named products, PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Core and the PTE Home tests, which are accepted for different purposes, and the ID a centre in India will take is not the same for all of them.

Pearson's PTE Academic overview describes a four-skills test of speaking, writing, reading and listening, taken on a computer at an authorised test centre, and its FAQ states that PTE Academic cannot be taken at home. The same page groups its uses under study at universities and colleges worldwide, migration to Australia or New Zealand, and work, which covers Australian and New Zealand work visas and professional registration in the USA with state Boards of Nursing and the Health Resources and Services Administration.

Pearson's guide Which PTE test is right for me? sets the other three apart:

• PTE Academic UKVI is the same test with a Unique Reference Number (URN) added for UK visa processes. Pearson sends applicants for most UK work visas, and students going below degree level or to a place that is not a Higher Education Institution, to this edition; degree-level study at a UK Higher Education Institution uses PTE Academic.
• PTE Core tests everyday rather than academic English and is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residency and citizenship. Pearson's PTE Core overview tells anyone applying to a Canadian university or college to take PTE Academic instead.
• PTE Home A1, A2 and B1 are speaking and listening tests that the UK Home Office accepts for family, settlement and citizenship routes and for a few work visas, such as the Sportsperson visa at A1.

Booking goes through Pearson's own systems wherever you test. The PTE Help Center guide to booking safely names two routes, your own myPTE account or an authorised agent (a PTE Partner registered with Pearson, who books through the separate PTE Partners Portal), and warns that an offer far below the official fee or a promised score may be a scam. Pearson's help page on booking and managing a test adds booking by phone through its call centres.

A PTE Academic date is a slot picked from open availability, which Pearson's PTE Academic overview describes as regular test dates with last-minute availability. What a candidate has to track instead is a handful of booking limits, the first three set by the PTE Retake Policy in force since 8 August 2024:

Two effective dates also shape what a sitting is worth. The test format in use today started on 7 August 2025, when two speaking tasks were added, as Pearson's 10 July 2025 press release on the enhanced PTE test announced, and Australia's Department of Home Affairs applies its revised PTE score requirements to tests taken from that same day, per Pearson's article on the new DHA visa requirements.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

The booking conditions in Pearson's booking help page concern identity and age. A candidate under 18 needs consent from a parent or guardian, each person may hold only one myPTE account, and the name, date of birth, citizenship and gender entered must match the ID brought on test day. Pearson's PTE Academic Test Taker Handbook adds that an approved Parental Consent Form covers every test until the candidate turns 18.

Application process and fee

Pearson's article How to book your PTE exam sets out the order: choose the test, pick a centre and a date and time at least 24 hours ahead, create a myPTE account with details that exactly match your passport, answer the booking questions, agree to the admission, reschedule and cancellation policies, then pay. Account details can still be corrected up to 3 days before the test, the article adds, but not later and not on test day.

Pearson quotes PTE prices country by country through a selector on its site. As of September 2026, selecting India in the PTE test centers and fees finder returned these prices, shown as an amount in Indian rupees with no statement on whether GST is included:

Under the PTE Payment Policy, Pearson takes cards, Google Pay and Apple Pay, adds PayU in India, and does not accept PayPal; a voucher can pay a test fee but not a rescheduling fee. Payment must be in the currency of the country where you sit, and Pearson's booking help page gives the example of a candidate in India testing in Australia, who pays in Australian dollars.

Changing a booking runs on calendar days. Pearson's Cancellations and Rescheduling policy, last updated on 27 August 2026, allows a free reschedule with more than 14 full calendar days left and at most 6 reschedules of one appointment; inside 14 days the only option is to cancel and book again. The PTE Refund Policy pays a 100% refund for cancelling more than 14 days before the test, 50% between 14 days and more than 7 days, and nothing at 7 days or fewer.

For illness or a family emergency, the cancellations policy offers an emergency reschedule at Pearson's discretion, requested with evidence no later than 72 hours after the appointment.

Before the exam

Admit card and exam day

Proof of a PTE booking is digital. Pearson's booking help page points to two records, a confirmation email and the booking shown with its date and time on the myPTE account dashboard, and asks anyone whose email has not come within two working days to check junk and spam folders before assuming something went wrong.

For PTE Academic in India, the document that decides entry is the passport. The PTE Identification Policy says the ID for PTE Academic should be a valid passport, that a candidate testing outside their country of citizenship can use only a passport, and that an alternative is possible only in countries named on the PTE Academic ID exceptions and variations list. India does not appear on that list, so an Indian citizen sitting PTE Academic in India needs a valid passport.

The policy also requires the physical passport you selected at booking, unexpired and issued no more than 10 years ago; photocopies, digital copies and temporary documents are refused, and a candidate turned away loses the fee. Anyone whose passport is held for an ongoing visa application must ask for it back to present on test day. The rules shift by edition: for PTE Core the policy lists a passport, or a Canadian Permanent Resident Card inside Canada, while for PTE Academic UKVI and the PTE Home tests it also accepts, outside the UK, a valid photographic government-issued identity card in the country that issued it.

Check-in doubles as a contract. Under Pearson's Test Center Rules you read and agree to a Test Taker Agreement handed over on arrival, and the electronic signature the administrator collects alongside your ID check and palm vein scan counts as legal acceptance of it; the PTE test day guide adds a digital photograph to that sequence. The same rules ask for arrival at least 30 minutes before the test, bar a late arrival from sitting at all, with the fee lost, and keep phones, digital watches, wallets, hats, coats, notes and food out of the room.

The PTE Academic Test Taker Handbook, dated July 2025, adds that there are no scheduled breaks, the clock keeps running during any break you ask for, you cannot return to earlier questions, and leaving early forfeits both the fee and the scores.

Structure

Exam pattern

The test runs in three parts, and Pearson's format guides give each part's duration as a range:

The Speaking and Writing part opens with an unscored Personal Introduction, with 25 seconds to prepare and 30 seconds to record, per the Speaking and Writing format guide. Spoken answers can be recorded only once, and the Listening format guide says each audio or video clip plays once.

Items are marked either right or wrong or with partial credit. Three item types also take points away for wrong choices: Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers in Reading and in Listening, and Highlight Incorrect Words, where the Listening format guide deducts one point for each wrong option chosen and awards one for each correct one. The Reading format guide warns that clicking every option when unsure loses score points.

Pearson's format guides set out the content as task types for each part rather than as a subject syllabus:

Both tasks that Pearson's press release on the enhanced PTE test announced for August 2025 are speaking tasks. In Summarize Group Discussion you hear a discussion between 3 people lasting up to 3 minutes, then get 10 seconds to prepare and two minutes to speak; in Respond to a Situation you read and hear a prompt of up to 60 words, think for 10 seconds and speak for 40, according to the Speaking and Writing format guide.

Length limits are strict. The Speaking and Writing format guide says Write Essay asks for 200 to 300 words in 20 minutes and scores zero below 120 or above 380 words, and that Summarize Written Text must be one sentence of 5 to 75 words, written within 10 minutes. Spelling may follow United States, United Kingdom, Australian or Canadian conventions, used consistently, and a human expert reviews the content of several open-response tasks before the final score is confirmed.

How to prepare

Preparation and books

Smart Prep, the preparation area that opens inside a myPTE account, is where Pearson keeps its free practice material. Pearson's PTE Academic and UKVI FAQs list 9 Guided Practice Tests there, 4 full versions, 4 skill versions and one short version, which show sample answers and mark Reading and Listening responses right or wrong. The same FAQs say test takers who consider themselves fluent sometimes score lower than expected when they skip preparation.

The paid PTE Academic Scored Practice Test, listed at $35.99 USD in September 2026, uses real past test questions and the same scoring algorithm as the live test. It comes in three versions, is valid for one year from purchase, and returns a score report that Pearson marks as not an official certification.

Exam centres

The FAQ in Which PTE test is right for me? rules out home testing for all PTE tests, so a centre booking is the only way to sit. As of September 2026, Pearson's test centers and fees finder lists centres by country, and selecting India named Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Mumbai and New Delhi among the cities with a centre. Pearson's booking article explains that entering a location in the booking flow returns the available centres, where you choose a date and time.

After the exam

Answer key

Asked whether test content can be accessed after the test, Pearson's Help Center scoring page answers that nothing currently used in PTE tests is shared outside a test session, and neither are sample responses to those questions, to protect the security and integrity of the tests.

Disputing a PTE score means paying for a rescore. Under Pearson's rescore and technical review policy, last updated on 25 August 2026, PTE is a machine-scored test but a rescore is done by a human expert, who rescores the whole test for $160 USD, requested by phone within 14 calendar days of the score being released. The fee is refunded if the overall or any communicative skills score changes, and a changed score, higher or lower, replaces the old one at once. A rescore is allowed once per test registration, only for your most recent test, and not after another test has been booked.

A technical review is separate. Under the same policy it costs $50 USD, must be requested within 15 business days of receiving results, checks the speaking recordings for technical faults and cannot change the score, though Pearson refunds the test fee and the review fee if it finds a fault.

Scores

Result and scorecard

Most candidates receive results within two business days and some wait up to five, according to the FAQ on Pearson's PTE Academic overview. The Score Report in myPTE shows an overall score and four communicative skills scores, listening, reading, speaking and writing, each on a range of 10 to 90, per the PTE Academic and UKVI FAQs.

Adding the Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing scores and dividing by four will not give you the overall score. Pearson's article on how the overall score is calculated says it takes account of question scores, question difficulty and question weighting, and that some tasks feed more than one skill.

Sharing costs nothing. Pearson's Help Center scoring page says you can send scores from myPTE to up to seven institutions at a time and to an unlimited number overall, that an institution can see a sent score in around 48 hours, and that institutions do not accept paper or PDF copies. The Skills Profile, with its recommendations, stays visible only to you, and a UKVI report carries the SELT URN that goes on a UK visa form. A score not assigned to any receiving body within two years of the test can no longer be assigned, because Pearson expires it at that point.

Cutoff

Pearson's global PTE Academic scoring page lists the minimums study applicants typically need by course level: 36 to 50 for foundation courses, 51 to 60 for undergraduate degrees and 57 to 67 for postgraduate degrees. Those bands sit under a line saying institutions set their own minimum scores, and the page's visa passage adds that the minimum for a visa depends on which visa you apply for.

For Australian visas, Pearson's summary of the Department of Home Affairs score requirements lists Competent English, for tests taken from 7 August 2025, at 47 in Listening, 48 in Reading, 54 in Speaking and 51 in Writing, and Proficient English at 58, 59, 76 and 69. Earlier tests keep the earlier requirements, and the article points to the Department's own website for the official figures.

For IELTS comparisons, Pearson's 2025 concordance summary for PTE Academic and IELTS Academic is based on 1,522 test takers recruited in India, China, Australia and the United Kingdom. It aligns an IELTS Academic overall 6.0 with PTE 47 to 54, 6.5 with 55 to 62 and 7.0 with 63 to 70, and says every concordance study gives only an approximate relationship between two tests, with score requirements better based on the performance standard the receiving body needs.

Counselling and seat allotment

After the result, Pearson's role is score delivery, and its Help Center scoring page sets rules worth knowing before the first report goes out. An institution sees only the score you choose to send, with no view of whether earlier attempts were higher or lower, and one that does not yet formally recognise PTE cannot be sent a score at all. Ticking the Australian Department of Home Affairs or Immigration New Zealand at booking sends the scores to that authority automatically, but if the result falls short, the same page says the authority cannot review it unless your application has already been lodged.

Pearson's PTE Academic and UKVI FAQs say PTE Academic is accepted for study applications by more than 4,000 institutions worldwide, is approved by the Australian and New Zealand governments for student visa and migration applications, and is accepted for study at most Canadian universities and colleges. For UK visa applications the same FAQs direct candidates to PTE Academic UKVI so the report carries a SELT URN, and for Canadian permanent residency and citizenship Pearson's PTE Core overview points to PTE Core. The same FAQs tell applicants to contact institutions directly for their full admission requirements, and link the full list of accepting institutions on Pearson's Who accepts PTE page.
