T.a. Pai Management Institute Manipal

Udupi, Karnataka Official site Updated
NIRF Management
#39

T. A. Pai Management Institute, known to applicants as TAPMI, prices its full-time MBA at Rs 9,75,000 a year in tuition and reported a median salary of Rs 13,09,000 for the batch that graduated in 2023-24. It sits 39th on the NIRF 2025 management list, and unlike a standalone institute that can only grant a diploma, it awards a full MBA degree because it is a constituent unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Selection runs on a CAT, XAT, GMAT or NMAT score first and a group discussion, written test and interview after. What follows is the exact per-programme fee, the percentile a shortlist actually needs, and how the placement median has moved across three batches.

Overview

TAPMI is the business school inside Manipal Academy of Higher Education, the private deemed-to-be university on the Karnataka coast, and that parentage is the single fact that separates it from the independent B-schools it is usually listed against. Because MAHE is a university, the qualification a TAPMI student leaves with is a Master of Business Administration degree rather than the post-graduate diploma an autonomous institute is limited to, a distinction that matters for anyone planning further study or a role that asks for a degree by name.

The institute teaches from the MAHE campus at Manipal in Udupi district and runs a second campus for its management programmes at MAHE Bengaluru. On the international side it carries accreditation from the US-based AACSB and the UK's AMBA, which its own site places at the head of every page. What it does not have is the public funding or the IIM charter that anchors the top of the national management table, so its case rests on its specialised MBA tracks and its placement record rather than on a brand handed down by statute.

Courses & Fees

TAPMI's core offering is a two-year MBA sold in seven variants, so an applicant picks a specialisation at the point of applying rather than in the second year. Around the MBA sit an undergraduate BBA (Honors), a five-year Integrated Programme in Management for students entering straight after school, a doctoral programme, and executive education.

Every MBA variant is priced the same on tuition. The official admissions page puts tuition for an Indian-domicile student at Rs 9,75,000 per year, and adds a one-time Alumni Lifetime Membership of Rs 20,000 and a refundable caution deposit of Rs 40,000 on top. Two programme-specific costs are worth knowing before you commit: an MBA-BKFS student pays an extra Rs 70,000 for training run with SBI and BSE, and an NRI seat is billed at USD 18,300 per year in place of the rupee tuition.

Tuition (per year)Rs 9,75,000

Caution deposit (refundable)Rs 40,000

Admissions

Admission turns on a valid entrance score and then a live selection stage, not on the exam alone. TAPMI accepts a CAT, XAT, GMAT or NMAT score for its MBA programmes, and opens ATMA, CMAT and MAT as extra routes for NRI applicants, per the admissions page. The eligibility floor is a bachelor's degree in any discipline with not less than 60% marks, and a final-year student may apply on the condition that they finish above that mark.

Candidates who clear the shortlist then sit the second stage, which combines a group discussion, a written ability test and a personal interview before the seat is decided. A single-programme application costs Rs 2,000 for an Indian applicant, and Rs 2,500 buys up to three programmes on one form, as the same page sets out. The practical read is that the entrance percentile gets you seen, and the written test and interview decide whether you are admitted.

Cutoff

TAPMI publishes a real shortlisting cut-off, which many private B-schools do not, and it is scaled to work experience rather than fixed at one line. For the MBA Core programme, the admissions page sets the CAT, XAT or GMAT bar at above 90 percentile for a candidate with less than 11 months of work experience and above 80 percentile for one with 12 to 23 months, while anyone past 24 months is shortlisted on profile instead of a percentile line.

The MBA in Technology Management runs its own bar of above 85 percentile on a CAT, XAT, NMAT or GMAT score, on the same page. Read those figures as the gate to the interview rather than a seat won: clearing the percentile earns a candidate the group discussion, written test and interview, and it is that stage which settles the admission.

Placements

The dependable placement figure here is the NIRF median, because it is drawn from the institute's audited data return rather than a brochure headline. In its NIRF 2025 submission, TAPMI reported a median salary of Rs 13,09,000 for the cohort that graduated in 2023-24, with all 514 of those graduates recorded as placed.

Graduating batchStudents placedMedian salary
2021-22449Rs 11,68,000
2022-23429Rs 13,50,000
2023-24514Rs 13,09,000

The three-year line is a more honest guide than any single headline. The median rose from Rs 11,68,000 to Rs 13,50,000 and then settled at Rs 13,09,000 even as the placed cohort grew to 514, across the same three returns, so a candidate is better off budgeting on that median than on a top offer only the strongest of the class reach.

Seat Matrix

TAPMI is a self-financing institute, so it does not fill seats against the category-by-category reservation grid a government-funded college publishes; what it reports instead is a sanctioned intake. The 2025 return puts TAPMI's approved MBA intake at 570 seats for 2023-24, a cut from the 630 sanctioned a year earlier, in its NIRF filing.

Academic yearSanctioned intake (2-year MBA)
2022-23630
2023-24570

Read the sanctioned figure as the ceiling on places rather than a count of who actually enrols, which runs below the approved intake and shifts from one cycle to the next. Because there is no statutory quota holding seats open, the current strength for a given specialisation is best confirmed on the institute's own admission material for the batch you are joining.

Rankings

TAPMI's most reliable marker is its NIRF 2025 standing: 39th in management with an overall score of 57.13, on the Ministry of Education's management ranking. For a private school without an IIM charter or public funding, 39th on the national list is a solid result and a firmer signal than the tier labels that circulate on forums.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore out of 100
Overall57.13
Teaching, Learning and Resources74.18
Research and Professional Practice33.40
Graduation Outcomes81.68
Outreach and Inclusivity72.43
Perception12.80

The individual parameters explain how TAPMI lands at that total. Graduation outcomes at 81.68 are its strongest score and mirror the placement record, while teaching resources at 74.18 and outreach at 72.43 both sit well above the halfway mark. The two figures dragging the total down are research at 33.40 and, most of all, perception at 12.80, the parameter that rewards the decades of brand recall the older IIMs enjoy and a specialised school of this size has had less room to build.

Facilities & Infrastructure

TAPMI runs as a residential management school on the MAHE campus at Manipal, which functions as a self-contained university town rather than a city block. Students live on campus, and the teaching turns on a management-focused learning resource centre and the case-method classrooms and analytics labs its specialised MBA tracks lean on.

Because the hostel and mess charges sit outside the tuition figure and are marked on the institute's own admissions page as still to be finalised for the coming batch, a candidate should treat residence as a real recurring cost on top of the fees listed earlier and confirm the current room and mess rate before committing. The wider MAHE campus adds the shared sports, library and student-life infrastructure of a large multi-college university.

Hostel

We could not find official hostel and accommodation details for T.a. Pai Management Institute Manipal. Check the official website for the current hostel facilities and fees.

Faculty

TAPMI teaches through a faculty of 81 members, the figure it reported in its NIRF 2025 return, spread across the finance, marketing, human-resources, analytics and operations areas its MBA specialisations are built on. For a school of this scale, that headcount is the resource behind the case-method teaching and the elective depth inside a chosen track.

The more useful question for a prospective student is the strength of the specific area they want to specialise in, since a marketing applicant and a banking applicant are really choosing different faculty groups within the same institute. That depth is set out area by area in the institute's own faculty directory, which is the reliable place to judge it rather than a single aggregate number.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

TAPMI's credential set runs on two levels, international and programme-specific. The institute holds AACSB and AMBA accreditation, the two marks that management schools outside India watch for, and it lists NBA accreditation alongside them, on its own site.

On the national side, the National Board of Accreditation has accredited TAPMI's Master of Business Administration and several of its specialisations, including the banking and financial services, human resource management and marketing tracks, which is the outcome-based approval that applies to a professional management programme in India. NAAC assessment in India runs at the level of a whole university or a single affiliated college, and TAPMI is neither: it is a constituent unit of MAHE, the deemed-to-be university, so it falls under MAHE's institutional accreditation rather than holding a NAAC letter under its own name. The lack of a standalone TAPMI grade follows from that structure and is not a missing credential.

Aid

Scholarships

TAPMI funds a named merit scheme rather than leaving aid entirely to bank loans. Its admissions material sets out the Dr. Ramdas M. Pai Scholarships for the incoming batch, awarded on merit, and the institute also weighs need-based support for admitted students.

Because the scholarship terms, the number of awards and the scores that qualify a candidate are reset for each intake, the figures for the batch you are joining are best read off the current admissions material before you budget. For most admits the steadier route to funding the fee remains an education loan, which every TAPMI offer is structured to be financed through.

Voices

Student Reviews

There is no verified rating to show for TAPMI, because the institute runs no audited student-satisfaction score and the star figures that portals pin to its name are aggregator estimates with nothing official behind them. Treating one of those as a verdict on a B-school blends teaching, placements, food and hostel life into a single digit that hides the one thing a specialisation applicant most needs to weigh.

The signal worth chasing is first-hand instead. A conversation with someone currently in the MBA-Marketing or MBA-BKFS cohort, or a graduate a year into work, tells a candidate more about the internship grind and the recruiter mix in their own track than a portal's rounded-off number ever will.
