Most business schools publish an eligibility floor and leave you guessing about the bar they actually apply. IMI Kolkata files both. For the 2025-27 intake the applied bar was 60 percentile on CAT or XAT, 70 percentile on CMAT and 60% in graduation, and the interview sitting behind it is worth 28% of the composite score against 35% for the entrance test. What the seat buys is a two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management the institute prices at Rs 19.48 lakh for 2026-28 with hostel and mess already inside the figure, set against a median salary of Rs 12,48,000 for the most recent batch in its ranking return. Read together, those four numbers tell you more than the rank does.
Overview
IMI Kolkata works from one city plot at 2/4C Judges Court Road in Alipore, the address it files against AICTE permanent institution id 1-475184201. Its legal parent is a local society: the institute runs under the aegis of the Alipore Institute of Management and Technology, while its board of governors is chaired by the chairman of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group and seated alongside the director general of IMI Delhi and the director of IMI Bhubaneswar. That is the structure to hold in mind through everything below: a Kolkata institution with its own society, its own accreditation file and its own ranking submission, governed through committees it shares with two sibling schools.
The flagship diploma is younger than the IMI name suggests. The PGDM opened here in 2011 with 120 seats and was raised by 60 in 2018, which is how the sanctioned intake reached the 180 it still runs. Two other programmes hold AICTE approval alongside it, and neither is the residential flagship: the disclosure enters a Fellow Programme in Management at 20 seats and an Online PGDM at 300. The online diploma carries its own approval and its own intake, so no fee, cut-off or placement figure on this page belongs to it.
The certificate at the end says diploma. IMI Kolkata is not a university and has no affiliating university behind it, which is why the qualification is issued under AICTE approval rather than conferred as a degree. An Association of Indian Universities equivalence stands in for the missing degree, and because that equivalence carries an expiry year rather than running indefinitely, it is listed with its dates in the accreditation table below rather than asserted here as a permanent fact.
Courses & Fees
The two-year PGDM is the programme almost every applicant means, and its calendar is fixed rather than modular: six trimesters of 11-12 weeks, the first three compulsory, then a summer internship of 8-10 weeks before the electives begin. A student takes one area as a major and a second as a minor and clears 102 credits in all, so specialisation here is a second-year decision made from a menu the institute fixes in advance.
| Programme | Sanctioned seats | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Post Graduate Diploma in Management | 180 | 2 years |
| Fellow Programme in Management | 20 | 3 years |
| Online PGDM | 300 | 2 years |
Two money figures circulate for this school and they are not the same figure. One is the programme fee the admission page prints; the other is the fee the institute reports as approved for the batch, which is larger because a room here is compulsory rather than optional.
| Fee, 2026-28 batch | Self-sponsored (Rs) | Company-sponsored (Rs) |
|---|---|---|
| Programme fee, total | 14,98,000 | 16,94,000 |
| First instalment | 2,78,836 | 3,02,500 |
The balance falls in five further instalments, and the self-sponsored ones are not identical: the fee sheet lists 2,43,834, then 2,43,833 twice and 2,43,832 twice, where a company-sponsored student pays a flat 2,78,300 five times. The rupee-level difference is trivial to a budget and useful as a signal: this is a published schedule rather than a rounded brochure number.
Now put the room back in. The institute mandates hostel accommodation for all students, and the fee it reports as approved by the state government is Rs 19.48 lakh for PGDM 2026-28, hostel fees and mess charges included. That figure reconstructs exactly from the two published sheets: the programme fee of 14,98,000 plus two years in the twin sharing AC room at 2,25,000 a year. That arithmetic carries a warning the headline cannot: the approved all-in price assumes the middle room category, so a single occupancy room puts a family above the number the state approved. Borrow against the room you will actually take.
Admissions
Every test that opens the door here is conducted by somebody else. The institute accepts CAT, XAT, GMAT and CMAT scores, and its own admission page adds a restriction the disclosure does not: GMAT is the route for candidates holding foreign nationality, so an Indian applicant is realistically choosing between CAT, XAT and CMAT. The subject you studied is not a filter: engineering, humanities, commerce, economics and medicine all qualify, so long as the bachelor's ran three years or more past the 10+2 stage and finished at 50% aggregate or better. Students still in their final year are allowed into the pool, on condition that they can evidence that bar by September 30, 2026.
Applying costs Rs 2,250, charged once. Anyone who has already paid it to IMI New Delhi may add this campus and Bhubaneswar for nothing, which is the mechanism behind so many candidates holding two IMI offers at the same time without ever having chosen between the cities. Two things decide the shortlist, the test score and what the marksheets before it say. Survive that and you are called to what IMI Kolkata labels the Individual Assessment, which in practice means one personal interview, and the offer that comes afterwards is a composite of everything the committee has scored rather than a second look at the percentile.
Then there are the dates, and this is where an applicant has to choose which document to believe. The AICTE filing enters a last date for applications of May 31st, results announced on April 1st and admission closing on September 15th, a sequence that has results preceding the deadline. The live admissions portal for 2026-28 runs a different and internally inconsistent calendar of its own: its process table gives a last date to apply of 14 June with video assessment, interviews and the admission decision all in June and the programme beginning in July, while the banner at the top of the same page advertises June 28, 2026. Work to the earlier of the two portal dates and confirm it by email before you rely on either.
Sponsorship carries a condition that deserves reading twice. Nothing changes about the assessment itself, and the sponsor's letter is simply produced at the interview, but the institute states plainly that a sponsored student will not be eligible to receive any placement assistance from its placement cell, and it applies the same exclusion to candidates on foreign passports. Someone whose employer is funding the diploma as a route out of that employer is therefore paying with the one thing the fee otherwise buys.
Cutoff
Ask what percentile gets you in and IMI Kolkata answers with a filed table rather than a shrug. Three cycles of it are on the record.
| Requirement | 2023-25 | 2024-26 | 2025-27 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 10 | 60% | 60% | 60% |
| Class 12 | 60% | 60% | 60% |
| Graduation | 50% | 60% | 60% |
| CAT or XAT | 50 percentile | 50 percentile | 60 percentile |
| CMAT | 70 percentile | 70 percentile | 70 percentile |
| GMAT | 500 | 500 | 500 |
Two rows have moved and they moved in different years. The graduation requirement went up first, from 50% for the 2023-25 cycle to 60% for the two cycles since, which already puts the applied bar above the 50% aggregate the admission page advertises as eligibility. The entrance requirement followed one cycle later, CAT and XAT rising from 50 percentile to 60 for 2025-27. CMAT is the row that has not moved at all, holding at 70 percentile through all three cycles, so a candidate who sat CMAT rather than CAT is applying against a bar that has stayed still while the others rose.
Clearing the bar is not the same as winning the seat, because the offer is a composite score and the entrance test is only the largest single block in it.
| Selection criterion | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Standardised test score, CAT, XAT, GMAT or CMAT | 35% |
| Interview score | 28% |
| Months of experience | 12% |
| Pedigree of undergraduate college | 5% |
| Class 10 score | 3% |
| Class 12 score | 3% |
| Undergraduate score | 3% |
| Undergraduate stream or professional certifications | 3% |
| Communication skills, from an AI assessment score | 3% |
| Gender diversity | 3% |
| Regional diversity | 2% |
Three entries on that sheet repay more attention than the test row does. Months of experience carries 12%, scored on its own rather than folded into the academic record, which is a heavy allowance at a school that also admits freshers. Communication is marked from an AI assessment, so a slice of the file is graded before any human reads it. And the interview that carries 28% is not always faculty-run: the institute records that its alumni are involved as panellists in the admission interviews, both physically and virtually. Prepare for a practitioner across the table, not an academic.
Placements
The institute has filed three consecutive years of placement data with the government, and the movement inside it is the useful part rather than any single headline.
| Batch graduating | Graduating in minimum time | Placed | Median salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 131 | 131 | Rs 8,71,000 |
| 2022-23 | 187 | 187 | Rs 10,50,000 |
| 2023-24 | 189 | 189 | Rs 12,48,000 |
The median climbed in each of those years and the placed count matched the graduating count every time. Then the climb stopped. The admissions portal reports the 2023-25 batch as 100% placed at a median of Rs 12.49 LPA, an average of Rs 12.75 LPA and a highest package of Rs 40.31 LPA, and that median sits within a few thousand rupees of the Rs 12,48,000 filed for the batch before it. A flat median across two cohorts is the number to plan against; the highest package is one offer to one person.
The employer roll is more informative than any of those figures, and IMI Kolkata prints it graduate by graduate with the job title attached in its AICTE filing. One block dwarfs the rest: relationship manager roles at ICICI Bank. Behind it come tax and advisory associates at PwC's Acceleration Centers and its service delivery centre, then tax consultants and analysts at Deloitte, then personal banker and relationship roles at HDFC Bank, then controls, cyber risk and assurance associates at Grant Thornton LLP. Genpact, KPMG Global Services, Kantar and Evalueserve take small groups; Gartner, JSW Steel, Wipro and Tata Play take one or two each. Read that list as a description of the job, not just the salary: banking sales and professional-services delivery work is what this diploma reliably converts into, and a candidate who wants brand-side marketing or a strategy consulting seat is betting on the tail rather than the body of the distribution.
Seat Matrix
AICTE approval fixes the seat count, and IMI Kolkata prints beside it how many students it actually enrolled against that number for three cycles running.
| Cycle | Seats sanctioned | Students admitted |
|---|---|---|
| 2023-25 | 180 | 187, being 180 plus 7 EWS |
| 2024-26 | 180 | 189, being 180 plus 9 EWS |
| 2025-27 | 180 | 189, being 180 plus 9 EWS |
Note where the economically weaker section places sit. The institute writes them as additions to the sanctioned figure rather than as a reservation carved out of it, so an EWS candidate is not competing for a ring-fenced share of the 180. It is also the only category split anywhere in the filing. IMI Kolkata publishes no SC, ST or OBC seat count, so none appears here, and any such grid an applicant finds elsewhere for this school did not come from the institute.
Who ends up in those seats is a separate question, and the ranking return answers it. The 2023-24 submission puts total strength at 376, being 206 men and 170 women, of whom 92 are from within West Bengal and 284 from outside it, with none from outside the country. Within that roll, 53 students fall in the SC, ST and OBC category and 24 in the economically backward one. No home-state preference appears anywhere in the admission record, and the cohort a Kolkata candidate joins is drawn overwhelmingly from other states, so the local network you might expect from a Kolkata campus is not what the numbers describe.
Rankings
The government produces one ranking of this school, and the headline from it is a composite worth taking apart.
| NIRF 2025 management parameter | IMI Kolkata score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 71.46 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 32.92 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 81.76 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 72.31 |
| Perception | 5.16 |
The NIRF 2025 management table places IMI Kolkata at 42 on an overall score of 55.42, and graduation outcomes at 81.76 with outreach at 72.31 are what hold that position up. Outreach is scored partly on regional and social spread, which is a parameter a school recruiting three quarters of its roll from outside its home state is well placed to score on.
Perception is the outlier, and the way to size it is against the schools sitting next to it rather than against a notional 100. IMI Kolkata scores 5.16 where Jaipuria Institute of Management at Noida, one rank above, scores 13.53 and Goa Institute of Management, one rank below, scores 13.89; IMI Delhi, from the same group and board, scores 8.55. Since that parameter is built from what academics, employers and the public say when surveyed, a score at this level is a statement about how little the Kolkata name is known outside the recruiters who already come here. On campus that costs an applicant almost nothing, because the employers on the placement list have already made up their minds. It costs more in year five, in an application to somebody who has never recruited from Alipore.
Three private placings also appear, printed by the institute on its own admissions portal: 20 in India in the Careers360 ranking 2024, 52 in Asia in the QS Global MBA Rankings 2026 and 51 in India in the MBAUniverse ranking 2024. Each is quoted rather than linked to the ranker, and two of the three are already a year or more old, so they describe an earlier season than the NIRF numbers above do.
Departments
There is no department structure to navigate here. Electives are grouped into seven functional areas of management: marketing, finance, management information system and analytics, organizational behaviour and human resource management, operation management and quantitative techniques, strategy innovation and entrepreneurship, and economics, and the faculty list files every professor into those same buckets, with a single recent appointment entered under a strategy, sustainability and entrepreneurship label the elective list does not carry. So the area column on the faculty sheet is, in practice, the menu of specialisations this school can staff.
Count the names in each area before you commit to a major, because the sheet is not evenly loaded. Marketing, management information systems and analytics, and finance are the deep benches; economics carries a single name and operations management two, which is thin for a functional area the curriculum sells as a specialisation. Read the joining dates alongside them and the direction of travel is clear: the appointments dated 2022 onward cluster in management information systems and analytics and in marketing, which is what a school hires for when it expects its analytics electives to fill.
Facilities & Infrastructure
Every teaching room at IMI Kolkata is measured, numbered and published, so the campus can be counted rather than toured. The filing enters six classrooms seating between 56 and 70 apiece and a seminar hall for 120, with three smaller tutorial rooms behind them, a language lab, a board room and an auditorium. The computer centre is entered at 80 machines, with 80 online examination nodes on a 2048 Mbps line. Six classrooms against a sanctioned intake of 180 means a full cohort is split across rooms for a core course, which is worth picturing before you imagine one lecture theatre holding the batch.
For a fee of this size the library is the part to inspect. It holds 4802 print titles across 9554 volumes, 26948 EBSCO e-book titles, 38 national and 10 international journals, and 4 Bloomberg terminals, with EMIS Professional Asia, Prowess IQ, the EPWRF time series database and the Financial Times database subscribed alongside Web of Science and Scopus. That database set is a finance and analytics set rather than a general one; four terminals shared across the whole roll is the constraint to ask about at the interview if a Bloomberg-heavy summer project is your plan.
Sport is indoor-heavy, as a plot in Alipore forces it to be. The disclosure lists a gymnasium, yoga, table tennis, carrom, chess, billiards and snooker indoors, with volleyball, throwball, badminton, basketball, cricket and football outdoors. The room-by-room schedule that measures every classroom and tutorial room lists no playing field, so ask where the outdoor games are actually played before you picture a campus ground.
Hostel
Living on campus is not a choice at IMI Kolkata, which changes how the occupancy numbers should be read. The filing counts a boys hostel of 239 beds holding 234 students and a girls hostel of 182 beds holding 145. The men's block is close to full while the women's has slack in it, and since nobody may live out, a men's intake that grows has nowhere obvious to grow into.
Allocation runs on a preference form the admission office sends after the admission fee is paid, filled first come and first served, so how quickly you accept the offer is part of what decides which of these rooms you get.
| Room type, 2026-27 | Hostel fee (Rs) | Mess (Rs) | Total for the year (Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin sharing AC in the academic block, men only | 1,00,000 | 85,000 | 1,85,000 |
| Twin sharing AC | 1,40,000 | 85,000 | 2,25,000 |
| Single occupancy AC | 1,65,000 | 85,000 | 2,50,000 |
| Single occupancy AC with attached washroom | 2,25,000 | 85,000 | 3,10,000 |
The cheapest line is available to men only, which means the floor price of the programme is not the same for every applicant. Mess charges of Rs 85,000 are inside each of those totals, the same rates are published again for 2027-28 so whichever room you pick you pay for it twice, and the institute marks the whole table as indicative and open to revision.
Faculty
IMI Kolkata publishes its teaching strength as a ratio and shows the arithmetic underneath it, which is what makes the number checkable instead of decorative. Its filing states 27 permanent faculty against 379 students for a ratio of 1:14, the roll split as 191 in the 2025-27 year and 188 in 2024-26. Visiting and adjunct teachers are outside that numerator, so the ratio is the conservative reading and an elective taught by a practitioner sits outside it entirely.
One thing in the same filing does not reconcile, and it is fair to ask about. The faculty gender ratio is entered as 9 women and 16 men, which does not add up to the 27 permanent faculty the ratio is computed on. Both figures come from the institute's own disclosure, so one of them is counting a slightly different set of people, and neither this page nor any listing site can tell you which.
The director, Professor Mohua Banerjee, teaches in the marketing area and has 17 years of teaching experience recorded in the same filing, having joined the institute in 2008. She still teaches into the PGDM, which is not true of every business school head.
Notable Alumni
IMI Kolkata publishes no distinguished alumni roll, no award list and no named-graduate honours page. There is therefore no verified list to reproduce here, and none is invented. The only public document naming individual graduates is the AICTE placement filing, which records where people were hired rather than what they went on to become.
What the record does describe is how the alumni base is used, and it is unusually operational. The institute sets out a five-fold alumni contribution: a mock interview programme that simulates real recruitment, alumni briefing students before a company visits for internships or final placement, guest lectures and workshops, alumni businesses used as live cases in its local business accelerator course, and alumni sitting as panellists in the admission interviews. For an applicant that last item is the striking one, because it means the network is on both ends of your two years here: it helps decide whether you get in, and it rehearses you before you go out.
The base itself is young and narrow by design. The three most recent filed batches placed 131, 187 and 189 graduates into banking, professional services and analytics, so this is a decade-old network concentrated in a handful of employers rather than a broad century-old one. Ask the placement office for alumni inside your target function before you assume the network reaches it.
News & Articles
The change that matters most to a 2026 applicant is not an event, it is the admission bar moving in two successive cycles. The graduation requirement went from 50% to 60% between the 2023-25 and 2024-26 intakes, and the CAT and XAT requirement from 50 percentile to 60 between 2024-26 and 2025-27. Two raises in a row is a direction rather than a blip, and it is the reason not to apply against last year's numbers.
The second item is an accreditation clock that runs out mid-course. Both the AIU equivalence and the AMBA accreditation expire in 2027, inside a 2026-28 student's two years on campus, and the institute has entered AACSB as approved with a first progress report due by May 2026. A renewal is the normal outcome and a lapse would be unusual, but an applicant joining in July 2026 should ask the admission office for the current status of the AIU line specifically, because that is the one an Indian employer or doctoral programme reads.
College Compare
Because one application form covers three campuses, the choice most IMI Kolkata candidates actually face is against the other two IMIs, and the ranking table sets that choice out plainly. The NIRF 2025 management table has IMI Delhi at 40 on 56.59, IMI Kolkata at 42 on 55.42 and IMI Bhubaneswar at 94 on 46.24. Two ranks and about a point separate Kolkata from the Delhi campus whose name does most of the group's marketing, while Bhubaneswar sits fifty places away. Some of that similarity is structural: board sub-committees set policies on faculty incentives, research and the admission process in common across all IMIs, so the selection sheets genuinely are cousins. The outcomes are not. Each campus files its placement record separately and is ranked on its own submission, so a Delhi brochure proves nothing about a Kolkata seat.
Inside the ranking table, IMI Kolkata's immediate neighbours are Jaipuria Institute of Management at Noida on 56.46 and Goa Institute of Management on 55.27, a spread of about a point across three ranks. At that spacing the ordinal is noise and the real choice is between a Kolkata campus with a mandatory hostel and two schools in different cities with different recruiter mixes.
The comparison that does not work is with the school across town. IIM Calcutta holds rank 7 on 77.34 in the same table, more than twenty points clear on the composite, and the two are not drawing from the same applicant pool. Sharing a city is not a peer relationship.
Contact & Location
Alipore is a south Kolkata neighbourhood of courts, colonial bungalows and the city zoo, and the campus sits on Judges Court Road inside it rather than out on a suburban corridor, which is what the admissions portal means when it advertises a centrally located campus.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
IMI Kolkata carries every national mark a PGDM school can carry, and its own table puts a validity window against each one.
| Accreditation or recognition | Covers | Valid |
|---|---|---|
| National Board of Accreditation | PGDM | 1 July 2025 to 31 December 2028 |
| Association of Indian Universities, MBA equivalence | PGDM | 2022 to 2027 |
| Association of MBAs | PGDM | 2022 to 2027 |
| AICTE approval | PGDM 180, FPM 20 | Annual |
The NBA line has the most history behind it. The institute's file number 36-51-2014-NBA has been renewed without a break, from an initial accreditation in 2016 through extensions in 2018, 2019 and 2022 to the window now running to the end of 2028. Continuous cover matters more than any single letter grade here, because NBA assesses the diploma itself, the curriculum and the outcomes, rather than the institution wrapped around it.
The NAAC record is separate and the institute does not print the grade on its website, but it files it. Its quality assurance report enters cycle 1, grade B+, a CGPA of 2.6, accredited in 2024 and valid from 09/05/2024 to 08/05/2029. Read it for what it is: a first-cycle, middle-band result on a scale whose top band is A++, and a first cycle has no earlier assessment behind it to show improvement against. It is also the weaker of this institute's two accreditation stories. The NBA cover on the diploma is continuous and nearly a decade deep; the NAAC grade is new, mid-scale and institutional. A candidate weighing IMI Kolkata against a college advertising an A++ is comparing the institutional measure only, and on the measure that actually assesses the programme they would be joining, this school reads better than its letter grade does.
The AIU row is the one an Indian applicant should diarise. That equivalence is what makes the diploma read as an MBA to a doctoral admissions office or a job specification written around a master's, and its window closes in 2027, before a 2026-28 student graduates.
Aid
Scholarships
A high percentile buys nothing off the fee at IMI Kolkata. There is no merit money here at all, only the statutory AICTE tuition fee waiver, and the institute applies the statutory test to it unchanged: total family income below Rs 8 lakh a year, on up to 5% of the total intake, evidenced with income tax returns, a PAN number and a certificate from the competent government authority.
The value is unusually easy to check, because the institute names every recipient and the amount alongside it. For the 2025-27 batch it granted 9 full tuition fee waivers under the economically weaker section category, each worth Rs 11,25,000. That is the whole provision: the same filing enters the number of scholarships offered by the institution itself as not applicable, so an applicant outside the income bracket should budget for the full fee and price an education loan instead.
Outside support is thinner still, and the ranking return quantifies it. Against a roll containing 24 economically backward and 53 socially challenged students, 2 received a full tuition fee reimbursement from state and central government funds and 16 from institution funds, leaving 59 with no full reimbursement at all. Most students in those categories pay the fee.

Student Reviews
No rating for IMI Kolkata appears on this page, and the reason is specific rather than general. The institute does collect structured feedback: it runs a student end term feedback form scored on a five point scale, covering course content, the instructor's clarity, participation, practical application, pedagogy and continuous evaluation, and its quality report names its own NAAC page as the place the results are published. Open that page and what sits there is the questionnaire, not the answers. The institute knows what its students think of each course and has chosen not to publish it.
Star ratings do circulate for this school on listing and coaching portals. Those come from self-selected respondents with no verification and no involvement from the institute, and reprinting one here would dress an unchecked number as evidence. Until the end term scores themselves are published, the honest substitute is a conversation with someone in the current batch, and the alumni panellists who conduct admission interviews are the easiest such people for an applicant to reach.

Gallery
This frame is empty on purpose. IMI Kolkata's photographs of the Judges Court Road building, its library and its residential block are published in the institute's own image and video galleries under no licence that permits reuse, and the only alternative would be a stock photograph of some other Alipore facade, which would show a reader the neighbourhood while implying it was the school. A picture goes here when licensed photography of this campus exists, and not before.
