Indian Institute Of Technology, Kanpur
Fourth on the country's NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking with a score of 81.82, IIT Kanpur sits just inside the top handful of engineering institutes, and a single JEE Advanced rank routed through JoSAA counselling is the only key to a B.Tech seat here. The cost of that seat is not a single figure, because tuition at Kanpur is scaled to family income, so two students in the same lecture hall can pay very different bills. It is also the campus where computing was first taught in India, a distinction that colours the place without deciding who gets in.
Overview
IIT Kanpur opened in 1959 and grew up under an unusual sponsor. From 1962 to 1972 the Kanpur Indo-American Programme brought a consortium of nine United States universities, among them MIT, Caltech, Princeton, Purdue and the University of California at Berkeley, to help build its departments and laboratories, per the institute overview. None of the other early IITs was seeded this way: Bombay leaned on Soviet support, Madras on German and Delhi on British, while Kanpur was shaped by an American academic partnership.
That partnership left a mark that outlived it. In August 1963 the campus installed an IBM 1620 and began teaching computing on it, in what the Computer Science department records as the first computer classroom in the country, per the CSE department history. Kanpur today is a fully residential estate of 1,055 acres at Kalyanpur on the western edge of the city, and nearly every student lives on it, per the institute overview.
Courses & Fees
A JEE Advanced qualifier at Kanpur enters one of two undergraduate degrees, the four-year B.Tech or BS, or one of the five-year dual degrees that finish with a master's. Everything above that, the M.Tech, M.Sc, M.Des, the MBA at the Department of Management Sciences and the doctoral programmes, admits on its own national test rather than on JEE, per the department listing.
| Programme | Duration | How you get in |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech, BS | 4 years | JEE Advanced, then JoSAA |
| BT-MT, BS-MS dual degree | 5 years | JEE Advanced, then JoSAA |
| M.Tech | 2 years | GATE |
| M.Sc | 2 years | IIT JAM |
| M.Des | 2 years | CEED |
| MBA (Department of Management Sciences) | 2 years | CAT, then interview |
| Ph.D | Varies | GATE or UGC-NET, then interview |
The number that surprises most families is the fee itself, because Kanpur does not charge every undergraduate the same tuition. The first-semester bill is set by the family-income band you enter under, and the institute lists every head in its Dean of Students' Affairs circular. For a General or OBC student whose family earns above five lakh a year, the current odd-semester heads add up like this.
| Fee head | Amount (₹) |
|---|---|
| Admission fee (one-time, non-refundable) | 5,200 |
| Security deposit (one-time, refundable) | 26,000 |
| Semester fee (exam, registration, gymkhana, medical, amenities) | 10,960 |
| Hostel charges | 14,000 |
| Tuition, General or OBC, family income above ₹5 lakh | 1,00,000 |
| First-semester total, General or OBC | 1,56,160 |
Only the tuition line moves, and it moves a long way. Across the income bands the same first semester costs very different amounts, so the figure a family should plan for depends entirely on the band it falls in.
| Family-income band | Tuition (₹) | First-semester total (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| General or OBC, above ₹5 lakh | 1,00,000 | 1,56,160 |
| Other Economically Backward, ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh | 33,333 | 89,493 |
| Most Economically Backward, below ₹1 lakh | 0 | 56,160 |
| SC, ST or PwD | 0 | 56,160 |
| SC or ST, below ₹6 lakh (seat rent also waived) | 0 | 53,660 |
Master's, MBA and doctoral fees follow each programme's own schedule, so read this as the undergraduate entry bill and nothing wider.
Admissions
For a B.Tech, BS or dual-degree seat, Kanpur reads exactly one number and nothing beside it: your JEE Advanced rank. You clear JEE Main to earn a place in JEE Advanced, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority then allots a seat on your rank and the branch order you submit, and the institute runs no separate form and holds no management or donation quota. The rank is the whole of it.
Postgraduate entry opens a different door for each degree, and each door has its own key.
| Programme | Entrance test |
|---|---|
| M.Tech | GATE |
| M.Sc | Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) |
| M.Des | CEED |
| MBA (Department of Management Sciences) | CAT, then interview |
| Ph.D | GATE or a UGC-NET pass, then a departmental interview |
Doctoral admission is run department by department rather than centrally, so the same institute can be selecting a chemistry scholar and an aerospace scholar to different standards in the same season. Across every level, the entrance test is the one lever a candidate actually controls.
Cutoff
Kanpur publishes no cutoff mark; a JoSAA closing rank, not a score, decides your branch, and those ranks move each year with demand at josaa.nic.in. What is worth understanding is where the pinch sits. Computer Science and Engineering closes tightest here, as it does at every IIT, because software demand is national and follows salaries rather than any single campus. It is tempting to read Kanpur's own past into that, since this is where computing was first taught in the country, but the two do not connect: CSE would close just as tight without that history, and does at the IITs that never had it. What IS particular to Kanpur is that its branch menu has widened, with new BS programmes and the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences added recently, so a given rank now reaches a longer list here than it did a few years ago, and the decision a Kanpur applicant wrestles with is which branch to rank, not whether the institute is within reach.
Placements
Kanpur reports counts and medians rather than a single headline package, and it keeps its undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts apart. For the batch that finished in 2023-24, its NIRF filing shows 754 of the 1,133 four-year undergraduates who graduated in the minimum time taking a job at a median salary of ₹19,40,000, and another 283 leaving for higher study; the two-year postgraduate cohort placed 557 of 870 at a median of ₹15,11,000, with 239 continuing to study, per the NIRF 2025 data submission.
| Cohort, 2023-24 graduates | Finished on time | Placed | Median salary (₹) | Higher study |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, four-year (B.Tech, BS) | 1,133 | 754 | 19,40,000 | 283 |
| Postgraduate, two-year (M.Tech, M.Sc) | 870 | 557 | 15,11,000 | 239 |
Read those counts carefully, because the two groups do not add up to the graduating cohort. Set the 754 who took jobs beside the 283 who left for higher study and a gap remains: in each batch a real minority is recorded as neither, so the placed figure sits well below the number who finished on time. The honest reading is narrow. Most undergraduates who skip campus placement go on to a master's or PhD, but some simply are not captured on either line, which is why the median salary is a safer planning number than the placement rate or the single largest offer a batch produces.
Seat Matrix
The sanctioned intake Kanpur files with NIRF is the only institute-wide seat count it publishes: 1,210 across the four-year undergraduate programmes and 1,138 across the two-year postgraduate ones for 2023-24, per the NIRF 2025 data submission.
| Level | Sanctioned intake, 2023-24 |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate, four-year | 1,210 |
| Postgraduate, two-year | 1,138 |
Treat that total as a floor rather than a map. At Kanpur it dates faster than most, because the institute has been adding programmes, fresh BS degrees and the three benefactor-named schools, quicker than a yearly filing catches up, so the live menu is already wider than the filed total. What a B.Tech applicant actually fills against is the round-by-round allocation on josaa.nic.in, which splits that intake by branch and category; the institute total tells you only the rough size of the pool.
Rankings
IIT Kanpur reads better on the engineering table than on the overall one, which fits a campus built around technology and research more than breadth. Its NIRF 2025 placements, category by category, look like this.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | 4 | 81.82 | NIRF Engineering |
| Overall | 5 | 77.25 | NIRF Overall |
| Innovation | 5 | Not published | NIRF Innovation |
| Research | 6 | 69.80 | NIRF Research |
| Management | 27 | 60.15 | NIRF Management |
The component scores behind the engineering rank explain the standing. On the Engineering table Kanpur scores 91.77 for teaching, learning and resources and 88.08 for graduation outcomes, both among the highest in the country, and 78.49 for perception, the reputation measure that trails its teaching. Its management rank of 27 belongs to the Department of Management Sciences alone, a small programme beside Kanpur's engineering core, and does not bear on the engineering standing above it.
Departments
Kanpur groups its teaching into the long-standing engineering and science departments and, more recently, three benefactor-funded schools that did not exist a decade ago, per the department listing. Which of them your rank can reach is settled on the JoSAA form, so the list rewards a close read before you order preferences.
| Group | Departments and schools |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Aerospace Engineering; Biological Sciences and Bioengineering; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Sustainable Energy Engineering |
| Sciences | Chemistry; Earth Sciences; Mathematics and Statistics; Physics; Cognitive Science; Space, Planetary and Astronomical Sciences and Engineering |
| Humanities, economics, management, design | Humanities and Social Sciences; Economic Sciences; Management Sciences; Design |
| Newer named schools | Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology; Kotak School of Sustainability; Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems |
The three named schools are the clearest sign of where Kanpur is expanding: the Gangwal School takes a technology institute into medicine, the Kotak School into climate and energy, and the Wadhwani School into artificial intelligence, per the department listing. Each carries the name of the benefactor who funded it, and the Gangwal School's namesake, Rakesh Gangwal, took his mechanical-engineering degree here before co-founding IndiGo.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The facility that sets Kanpur apart from almost every other campus in the country is its own airfield. The Flight Laboratory is a national facility with a working runway and three light aircraft, a Piper Super Cub, a Cessna Skylane and a Piper Saratoga, along with gliders and a gliding club, per the Flight Laboratory page. Aerospace students fly instrumented sorties on those aircraft and work with the recorded data afterwards, rather than meeting flight only in a simulator.
That airfield is the visible tip of a large funded-research operation. Put in numbers, that operation is large: ₹2,26,97,18,000 of sanctioned research spread over 1,174 sponsored projects and 284 funding agencies in 2023-24, with a further ₹1,15,15,95,000 earned from 436 consultancy contracts for 235 client organisations (NIRF 2025 data submission). Money on that scale is what keeps the aircraft instrumented, the wind tunnels and engine test cells running, and the doctoral benches stocked; for an undergraduate it is the difference between reading about an experiment and being handed one.
Hostel
Living on campus is not optional at Kanpur; it is a residential institute, and the hostel charge is folded into the same DOSA circular as tuition rather than billed on its own. A new undergraduate pays ₹14,000 in hostel charges in the first semester, with a one-time refundable security deposit of ₹26,000 collected alongside it, per the DOSA fee structure. Rooms and messes run on the halls-of-residence system, and because a small health-insurance component can settle at a slightly different figure at registration, the circular for your own batch is the number to trust.
Faculty
Kanpur entered 610 faculty members in its NIRF 2025 data submission, and the more telling number beside it is the count of people they supervise: 2,129 full-time doctoral scholars, with 249 PhDs awarded in 2023-24 alone, in the same filing. On this campus that ratio is not abstract. These are the faculty running the Flight Laboratory's instrumented flights and holding the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards and Padma Shri honours the institute counts among them, per the institute overview. The practical effect for an undergraduate is that a laboratory year is spent alongside those doctoral scholars on live work, not watching a demonstration of it.
Notable Alumni
The institute's own Dean of Resource Generation and Alumni office keeps the record of its graduates, per the alumni profile. A short list shows how varied the paths out of Kanpur have been.
| Name | Degree at IIT Kanpur | Best known as |
|---|---|---|
| N. R. Narayana Murthy | M.Tech, Electrical Engineering | Co-founder of Infosys |
| Arvind Krishna | B.Tech, Electrical Engineering | Chairman and CEO of IBM |
| Ashoke Sen | M.Sc, Physics | String theorist, Fundamental Physics Prize laureate |
| Manindra Agrawal | B.Tech and PhD, Computer Science | Co-author of the AKS primality test, Gödel Prize winner |
| Duvvuri Subbarao | M.Sc, Physics | Former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India |
| Rakesh Gangwal | B.Tech, Mechanical Engineering | Co-founder of IndiGo |
The through-line is unusual: one set of engineering and science degrees produced the co-founder of Infosys, the chief executive of IBM, a string theorist, a governor of the Reserve Bank, and, in Rakesh Gangwal, the donor whose name is now on Kanpur's medical school. The alumni office holds the fuller record.
News & Articles
The most consequential recent news at Kanpur is structural, not a single announcement: three new schools that widen what the institute teaches beyond its engineering core. The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology moves a technology institute into medicine, the Kotak School of Sustainability into climate and energy, and the Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems into artificial intelligence, per the department listing. For day-to-day notices, admission calendars, results and event announcements, the institute runs its own news feed, and that page is the primary source to check rather than a secondary aggregator, per the IIT Kanpur website.
College Compare
Against the other IITs at the head of the NIRF 2025 Engineering table, Kanpur holds fourth, a step behind the leading trio and a step ahead of the rest.
| Institute | Engineering rank | Engineering score | Overall rank | Overall score | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIT Madras | 1 | 88.72 | 1 | 87.31 | Engineering, Overall |
| IIT Delhi | 2 | 85.74 | 4 | 80.67 | Engineering, Overall |
| IIT Bombay | 3 | 83.65 | 3 | 81.62 | Engineering, Overall |
| IIT Kanpur | 4 | 81.82 | 5 | 77.25 | Engineering, Overall |
| IIT Kharagpur | 5 | 78.69 | 6 | 73.99 | Engineering, Overall |
| IIT Roorkee | 6 | 75.44 | 7 | 71.73 | Engineering, Overall |
The scores show how close the top of this list is: fewer than seven points separate Kanpur from first-placed Madras, and barely two points separate it from Bombay just above. Kanpur also holds its position evenly, fourth in engineering and fifth overall, a one-place gap, where Delhi swings from second in engineering to fourth overall. The table ranks institutes rather than branches, though, so treat it as a starting point: the branch you can actually reach on your rank matters more than the single-place gaps between these names.
