Manipal Academy Of Higher Education, Manipal
Manipal Academy of Higher Education is easier to read as a cluster of colleges than as one university. It is a private deemed university on the Karnataka coast whose medical, engineering, pharmacy and management schools each admit students their own way. So the fee, the entrance test and the cutoff a candidate meets depend on which college they are aiming for, not on a single university-wide rule.
Overview
The institution began in 1953, when the physician and banker T. M. A. Pai founded Kasturba Medical College at Manipal as India's first private medical college, and it was granted deemed-to-be-university status in 1993, according to the university's recorded history. From that single medical college it grew, over the following decades, into a multi-college university spanning engineering, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and management.
Today MAHE teaches more than 28,000 students drawn from over 65 countries across 39 constituent institutions, schools and centres, and the Union government named it an Institution of Eminence in 2020, per the university's own profile.
Those institutions are grouped under faculties for the health sciences, for technology and science, and for management, law, humanities and social sciences. They are spread across campuses at Manipal, Mangaluru, Bengaluru and Jamshedpur, with an overseas campus in Dubai. That breadth is the reason the "brand" says little on its own: a Manipal medical seat and a Manipal engineering seat have almost nothing in common on price, entry or outcome.
Courses & Fees
Because each college prices its own degree, MAHE's fees cover a very wide band, from a nursing seat that costs less than most engineering seats to a medical degree several times more expensive than either. The full course fees in the General category are set out below.
| Programme | College | Duration | Entrance | Total course fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MBBS | Kasturba Medical College | 5.5 years | NEET | Rs 70,88,500 |
| BDS | Manipal College of Dental Sciences | 5 years | NEET | Rs 22,10,000 |
| BTech Computer Science | Manipal Institute of Technology | 4 years | MET | Rs 22,10,000 |
| BTech Mechanical | Manipal Institute of Technology | 4 years | MET | Rs 17,06,000 |
| BTech Biotechnology | Manipal Institute of Technology | 4 years | MET | Rs 13,74,000 |
| BArch | School of Architecture and Planning | 5 years | national aptitude test | Rs 21,95,000 |
| BPharm | Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences | 4 years | MET | Rs 15,50,000 |
| BSc Nursing | Manipal College of Nursing | 4 years | MET | Rs 8,10,000 |
| MBA | Manipal management programmes | 2 years | national test | Rs 18,40,000 |
Two things stand out. The medical degree at Kasturba Medical College is in a class of its own on price, and within engineering the choice of branch alone moves the bill by lakhs, with computer science costing well above the core mechanical and biotechnology streams. These are the standard General-category figures; NRI and foreign-national seats are billed higher, and the caution deposit is refundable while the registration fee is not.
Admissions
Admission at MAHE is exam-led and college-specific. The Manipal Entrance Test, a computer-based test the university runs itself, is the gateway to B.Tech at Manipal Institute of Technology, and to B.Pharm, Pharm.D, B.Sc Nursing, the allied-health degrees, the integrated management programme and the BBA honours course. MBBS and BDS admissions run on NEET instead, because those seats are filled through the national medical counselling that NEET feeds. B.Arch takes a national aptitude test, and international and NRI applicants apply through the separate DASA and foreign-student channels.
Every application goes through the university's own online portal, and MAHE states plainly on its eligibility page that it works through no agents, middlemen or admission consultants. For a family, the practical takeaway is that a place is won on a test rank and confirmed in counselling, and that a call to the merit list is not the same as a confirmed seat.
Cutoff
MAHE does not publish one cutoff, because it admits through different exams and its closing ranks shift every year. For engineering, entry turns on the Manipal Entrance Test rank, and the most sought-after branches, computer science and its variants at Manipal Institute of Technology, close at far lower ranks than the core-engineering branches in the same college. For MBBS and BDS, the deciding figure is the NEET rank, and Kasturba Medical College's seats fill among the stronger NEET scores in the private-college field.
Because these closing ranks are set fresh in each MET and NEET counselling round, and vary by category and by counselling stage, the dependable reference is the seat-allotment list for the current cycle rather than any fixed table. Treat last year's closing rank as a rough guide to where you stand, never as a promise about this year.
Placements
Placement at MAHE only makes sense one college at a time, because a doctor, an engineer and an MBA graduate leave through completely different doors. Manipal Institute of Technology is the largest recruiting campus, and its engineering outcomes for the most recent batch on record read as follows.
| Metric | Value (2023-24 UG batch) |
|---|---|
| Median salary | Rs 8,50,000 |
| Students placed | 1140 |
| Went on to higher studies | 288 |
Management sits higher on money. MAHE's flagship business school, the T. A. Pai Management Institute, reported a median salary of Rs 13,09,000 for its 2023-24 MBA cohort, with all 514 of that year's graduates placed. Medicine works differently again: MBBS students at Kasturba Medical College move into a compulsory internship and then compete for postgraduate seats through NEET-PG, so their next step is more training rather than a campus offer.
Seat Matrix
Seats at MAHE are sanctioned per college and per programme, so there is no single intake number for the university. Engineering is the widest gate: Manipal Institute of Technology has expanded its B.Tech intake steadily, and its sanctioned strength year on year looks like this.
| Academic year | BTech sanctioned intake |
|---|---|
| 2020-21 | 2040 |
| 2021-22 | 2280 |
| 2022-23 | 2340 |
| 2023-24 | 2400 |
Medicine is deliberately narrow by comparison. Kasturba Medical College, Manipal admits 250 MBBS students a year, the ceiling the National Medical Commission allows, while across all its four-year undergraduate programmes MAHE sanctioned 3,591 seats in 2023-24.
Rankings
In the NIRF 2025 results, MAHE is placed 14th in the country overall and 3rd among all universities, and its research output ranks 19th nationally.
The strength behind those numbers is in the health sciences, not engineering. Kasturba Medical College, Manipal is 10th in medicine, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences 8th in pharmacy and Manipal College of Dental Sciences 5th in dentistry, while Manipal Institute of Technology sits 59th in engineering and T. A. Pai Management Institute 39th in management. A student reading the single overall figure should notice that the medical, dental and pharmacy schools carry it, and pick the college whose discipline they actually want.
Departments
MAHE's academic map is unusually wide. Its own profile counts more than 320 specializations across 29 disciplines, delivered through named colleges rather than generic departments. The health-sciences faculty holds Kasturba Medical College at both Manipal and Mangaluru, the Manipal Tata Medical College at Jamshedpur, the Manipal Colleges of Dental Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Nursing, and the Prasanna School of Public Health.
Technology and science bring together Manipal Institute of Technology, the Manipal School of Information Sciences and the School of Architecture and Planning. Management, media, hospitality and law sit with T. A. Pai Management Institute, the Manipal Institute of Communication, the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration and the Manipal Law School. Research is run through dedicated units such as the Manipal Advanced Research Group, and the medical colleges are tied to teaching hospitals rather than to a lab wing alone.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The Manipal campus is effectively a college town of its own, and the health-sciences side is anchored by Kasturba Hospital, a large teaching hospital where medical, nursing and allied-health students train on real cases. Alongside it sit clinical simulation labs, a health-sciences library, and the engineering workshops, design studios and computing labs on the Manipal Institute of Technology side.
Student life is genuinely residential: sports run through a central athletics complex, and the mix of 65-plus nationalities on campus gives the town an international feel that is rare for a coastal Karnataka university. Because the campus doubles as a functioning hospital and research base, much of what a student uses day to day is shared infrastructure across colleges rather than one department's property.
Hostel
MAHE is a largely residential university, with separate hostel blocks for men and women across the Manipal campus and mess facilities attached to them. Rooms are allotted college-wise, and both the room rent and the mess charges sit outside the tuition figures listed earlier, so they add a real recurring cost on top of the course fee. Since hostel categories and charges are revised each year, confirm the current room and mess fee for your specific college on the official admissions pages before you budget.
Faculty
Teaching at MAHE runs across its colleges and schools, and in its NIRF 2025 data submission the university listed 2,938 faculty members. Because the institution spans medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, management, hospitality and the liberal arts, its teaching staff is a mix of clinicians working in Kasturba Hospital, laboratory scientists, and engineering and management academics, rather than a single-discipline department. For a prospective student, the more useful question is the faculty depth of the individual college they are joining, which each school publishes separately.
Notable Alumni
MAHE's best-known graduates come mostly from its engineering and medical colleges. Satya Nadella, the chief executive of Microsoft, took his undergraduate engineering degree at Manipal Institute of Technology, and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the technology entrepreneur and former Union minister, studied electronics engineering there as well. From the wider university, the chef and restaurateur Vikas Khanna trained at its hotel-administration school, and Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, the first Malaysian in space, studied medicine at Manipal, according to the university's alumni record.
News & Articles
MAHE's admissions for the 2026 intake are open across its engineering, health-sciences, pharmacy and management programmes, with the Manipal Entrance Test as the main route for its own tests and NEET for medicine, per the official admissions page. The university continues to expand under the Institution of Eminence status it was granted in 2020, most visibly through the newer Manipal Tata Medical College at Jamshedpur, per its own profile. Where those notices appear depends on the route: MAHE posts MET results and seat allotments on its own applicant portal, while MBBS and BDS seats are tracked through the national NEET counselling instead.
College Compare
Grouping MAHE with the private engineering universities it is often listed beside undersells it. Its real advantage is in the health sciences, where Kasturba Medical College stands with the country's established medical schools rather than with the private engineering field. A student choosing between MAHE, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Vellore Institute of Technology and BITS Pilani is really choosing by subject: MAHE for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, and its rivals where engineering or a pure-sciences focus comes first. The honest comparison is programme by programme, on each college's own standing, not on a single university-level label.
