IIT Hyderabad opened its doors in 2008 as one of eight new IITs the government sanctioned that year, and within about fifteen years it had climbed into the top ten of the national engineering table. It runs from a residential campus at Kandi, in the Sangareddy district on the western edge of Hyderabad, where it moved into permanent buildings in 2015 after seven years in a temporary home. Two things set it apart from an older IIT: a Fractal Academic System that lets students assemble credits far more freely than a fixed-branch curriculum, and a deep working relationship with Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Overview

IIT Hyderabad is an Institute of National Importance, the statutory status every IIT holds, and it is run by a single director, currently Professor B. S. Murty. The academic model is the part worth understanding first. Instead of locking a student into one department's course list, the Fractal Academic System breaks credits into smaller fractional blocks and spreads choice across the timetable, so an undergraduate can layer minors, honours credits and electives from other disciplines onto a core degree. That design is why the institute carries departments as varied as Heritage Science and Technology, Climate Change and Design alongside the usual engineering and science departments.

The teaching and research sit across engineering, the pure sciences, design, liberal arts and management, and two named schools give the place its own character: the Dr. BVR Mohan Reddy School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Greenko School of Sustainability. Research is a large part of the institute's identity rather than an add-on, with work concentrated in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, 6G communication, additive manufacturing and biomedical devices. The link with Japan runs through a dedicated Japan Desk that administers the JICA-funded FRIENDSHIP doctoral scholarship, sending master's graduates to partner universities such as Waseda; Japanese assistance has also shaped the campus design and funded parts of its infrastructure.

Courses & Fees

The institute teaches the full ladder of technical degrees: a four year B.Tech and a B.Des at undergraduate level, two year M.Tech, M.Des, M.Sc and M.A programmes, and a large doctoral cohort. Undergraduate teaching is where most applicants start, so the fee table below is for a B.Tech student entering in 2026, taken straight from the institute's own fee circular.

Fee headGEN / OBC (₹)SC / ST / PwD (₹)
One time fee (joining, activity, refundable deposit)19,00019,000
Tuition fee (per semester)1,00,0000
Other academic and facility charges (per semester)14,67514,675
Student welfare fund (per semester)1,0001,000
Hostel charges (per semester)18,00018,000
Mess advance (per semester)14,43014,430
Medical insurance (annual)1,8881,888
First semester grand total1,68,99368,993

Read the table the way the circular intends. Tuition is the only line that changes by category: a general or OBC student pays ₹1,00,000 in tuition each semester, while a SC, ST or PwD student pays nothing, which is why the first semester lands near ₹1,68,993 for one and ₹68,993 for the other. Everything from the second semester on drops the one time fee, so the recurring outlay is the semester charges plus the annual insurance. A self financing M.Tech seat and a foreign national seat are priced separately in the same circular, and the mess advance shifts once the day count changes, so a student should always confirm the figure for their own batch before paying.

Admissions

Entry to the B.Tech programmes runs through JEE Advanced, which a candidate can sit only after clearing the JEE Main cut for that year, and seats are then filled by the common JoSAA counselling that pools all the IITs, NITs and IIITs. The B.Des route uses UCEED instead of JEE. At postgraduate level the M.Tech and M.Des programmes admit through the GATE score by way of the COAP and CCMT counselling, the M.Sc programmes through the IIT JAM examination, and doctoral candidates apply directly to the institute against a departmental short list and interview. Because every route feeds a centralised counselling round rather than a college level form, the deciding factor is the national rank a candidate carries into that round, not a separate IIT Hyderabad application.

Cutoff

There is no single cutoff mark at IIT Hyderabad. What exists is a closing rank for each branch, category and counselling round, published by JoSAA after seats are allotted, and those ranks move every cycle with the number of candidates and the seats on offer. The pattern holds across years even as the exact figures shift: Computer Science and Engineering closes at the sharpest ranks, the circuit branches such as Electrical Engineering and the newer Artificial Intelligence programme sit next, and the core engineering branches close at more forgiving ranks. A candidate should read the closing rank for their target branch and category from the JoSAA round data for the current year rather than trust a fixed number, since a rank that secured a seat in one year can miss in the next. The honest planning rule is to treat the previous year's closing rank as a guide to the neighbourhood, not a guarantee.

Placements

The most reliable placement signal is the median salary the institute reports to the national ranking framework, because a median is not pulled upward by a handful of very large offers the way an average is. The figures below come from that submission.

ProgrammeGraduating batchStudents placedMedian salary (₹)
B.Tech (4 year)2022-2326921,00,000
B.Tech (4 year)2023-2430621,00,000
M.Tech (2 year)2023-2428314,50,000
PG (3 year)2023-242834,60,000

Against that median, the institute's own career office reports the headline numbers that recruiters like to quote. In the 2022-23 placement season the Office of Career Services recorded a placement rate of 74.90%, with 570 students placed out of those who registered, 335 companies on campus, 621 total offers and 55 international offers. The highest package that year was 63.78 lakh and the overall average was 20.07 lakh, with the B.Tech average higher at 24.32 lakh.

The gap between that average and the lower median in the table above is the point to hold onto. A small number of very large offers lift the average well above what a typical graduate takes home, so the median is the fairer figure to plan a decision around.

Seat Matrix

The number of seats is fixed each year as a sanctioned intake, and the branch by branch and category by category split is published in the JoSAA seat matrix once counselling opens. The institute's approved intake, as reported in its ranking submission, is set out below.

LevelSanctioned intake (2023-24)
UG, 4 year (B.Tech and B.Des)595
PG, 2 year (M.Tech, M.Des, M.Sc)443
PG, 3 year48

The undergraduate intake has grown steadily as the institute has added programmes, and the exact per branch allocation, including the supernumerary seats for women candidates and the reservation split, is set in each year's JoSAA seat matrix rather than fixed once.

Rankings

In the 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework, IIT Hyderabad placed 7 among engineering institutions and 12 in the overall category, and it took 6 in the innovation ranking that measures patents, incubation and entrepreneurship, a category where its Technology Research Park gives it an edge. Internationally, the institute rose to 664 in the QS World University Rankings 2026, and it sits in the top 10% of institutions worldwide for citations per faculty, a measure of how often its research is used by others. A young institute reaching the top ten nationally and breaking into that band of the QS table is the clearest evidence that its research output has scaled quickly.

Departments

The academic map is unusually broad for an engineering campus. The engineering departments include Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Engineering Science, Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change and Heritage Science and Technology. The science side carries Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, and the remaining departments and schools cover Design, Liberal Arts, Entrepreneurship and Management, the Dr. BVR Mohan Reddy School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Greenko School of Sustainability.

Research volume backs the teaching. The institute reported 181 sponsored research projects in the 2023-24 year and 34 patents granted in 2023, and its TiHAN facility is a national testbed for autonomous navigation systems on road and in the air.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The permanent campus at Kandi is a self contained residential township that the institute occupied in 2015, and its architecture carries a visible Japanese influence from the JICA partnership. Beyond classrooms and laboratories, the standout facility is the Technology Research Park, a building that houses startups and industry research units next to the academic departments so that student and faculty ideas can move into a company on the same campus. A medical centre supported through the Japan collaboration, a central library, sports grounds and the laboratory blocks that feed the fractal curriculum round out the infrastructure. Because the credit system pushes students across departments, the campus is built to let a mechanical student walk into a design studio or an AI lab without leaving the academic core.

Hostel

IIT Hyderabad is a fully residential institute and every undergraduate is expected to live on campus, which is why the hostel and mess charges are folded into the standard fee rather than billed as an option. From the official circular, a UG student pays ₹18,000 in hostel charges and a mess advance of ₹14,430 each semester, with the mess figure tied to a set number of dining days. Living on campus is not only a housing arrangement here; it is part of how the fractal system works, since the cross department electives, the research groups and the student built projects assume a student is on site through the week.

Faculty

The institute's 2025 ranking submission lists 282 faculty members, almost all of them holding a doctorate and the large majority on regular, full time appointments. That research base is what pushes the innovation and citation standings above: the sponsored projects, the granted patents and national facilities like TiHAN are faculty led, and doctoral students make up a large share of the campus, which is unusual for an institute this young.

Notable Alumni

IIT Hyderabad graduated its first undergraduate batch only in 2012, so it does not yet have the decades long alumni record that an older IIT can point to, and there is no reliable published roster of widely known alumni to reproduce here. Rather than list unverified names, this section stays honest about the institute's age. Prospective students who want to trace where graduates have gone should use the official alumni association and the placement records, which show the recruiters and higher study destinations directly.

News & Articles

Day to day notices, admission notifications and research announcements move too fast for a profile page to track reliably. The institute's press release desk at pr.iith.ac.in and the news section of iith.ac.in carry the authoritative version of each update, from the 2026 QS result to the latest convocation, and are the right place to confirm a current date or deadline.

College Compare

Set against the wider engineering field, IIT Hyderabad sits at 7 in the national engineering ranking, behind the older IITs but ahead of most of the country's engineering institutions, a strong position for a campus opened in 2008. For a candidate the sharper comparison is branch by branch: a strong Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence aspirant will weigh it against the highest ranked IITs, while a core engineering candidate may find its closing ranks more reachable than at an older campus carrying the same brand.

Contact & Location

The campus is at Kandi, in the Sangareddy district of Telangana, on the western outskirts of Hyderabad, and it is reached from the city by road toward the Mumbai highway. The official website is iith.ac.in, which carries the full postal address, department contacts and the admission office details.
