Indian Institute Of Technology, Bombay
IIT Bombay ranks third in India on the Ministry of Education's NIRF 2025 Overall list, and every B.Tech seat it fills is allotted through JEE Advanced and the JoSAA counselling rounds, never a direct application to the institute. One of the country's Institutes of National Importance, based at Powai in Mumbai, it enrols more postgraduate and doctoral students than the undergraduates that made its name.
Overview
IIT Bombay opened in 1958 as the second IIT, and it was the first set up with foreign assistance: the money came through UNESCO as roubles from the then Soviet Union, and Parliament decreed the IITs Institutes of National Importance in 1961, per the institute's own history.
It is a research-heavy institute rather than a single-department school. The Ministry of Education granted it Institution of Eminence status in July 2018, and its official statistics count 17 academic departments, 35 other academic entities and three schools, teaching 13,282 students split as 6,276 undergraduate and dual-degree, 3,319 master's and 3,687 doctoral, with more than 75,000 engineers and scientists graduated over six decades (Pocket Statistics 2023-24). That the postgraduate and doctoral rolls together outweigh the undergraduate intake is the tell: research, not the four-year degree, is the institute's centre of gravity.
Courses & Fees
IIT Bombay's undergraduate degrees are the four-year B.Tech, offered across eleven engineering disciplines; the four-year B.S. in Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics or Applied Geophysics; the B.Des at the IDC School of Design; and a five-year Dual Degree that pairs a B.Tech with an M.Tech, per the academic office. Postgraduate study runs wider, with the M.Tech and M.S. by Research, the two-year M.Sc, the M.Des, the MBA and Executive MBA at the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, a Master in Public Policy, and doctoral programmes in every department (master's admissions).
| Programme | Duration | Entrance route | Indian-national fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech. | 4 years | JEE Advanced then JoSAA | ₹1,07,350 per semester |
| B.S. | 4 years | JEE Advanced then JoSAA (a few Mathematics seats via INMO) | ₹1,07,350 per semester |
| B.Des. | 4 years | UCEED | ₹1,07,350 per semester |
| Dual Degree (B.Tech. + M.Tech.) | 5 years | JEE Advanced then JoSAA | ₹1,07,350 per semester |
| M.Tech. | 2 years | GATE | Set per programme |
| M.Sc. (2-year) | 2 years | IIT JAM | Set per programme |
| M.Des. | 2 years | CEED | Set per programme |
| MBA | 2 years | CAT then interview (SJMSOM) | Set per programme |
| Ph.D. | Varies | GATE or UGC-NET plus interview | Set per programme |
The undergraduate fee is fixed and published in an official circular each semester, so ignore any single number quoted out of context. For a B.Tech, B.S., B.Des or Dual Degree entrant in 2024-25, the per-semester fee for an Indian national is ₹1,07,350, of which ₹1,00,000 is the statutory tuition fee; the first-semester payment reaches ₹1,23,350 once the one-time admission charges of ₹10,000 and the refundable institute and library deposits of ₹6,000 are added (UG fee circular).
| Fee head | Amount (₹) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Admission fee (one-time) | 8,750 | UG fee circular |
| Student Welfare Fund (one-time) | 1,250 | UG fee circular |
| Tuition fee (per semester) | 1,00,000 | UG fee circular |
| Registration and examination fee (per semester) | 2,200 | UG fee circular |
| Gymkhana fee (per semester) | 2,200 | UG fee circular |
| Student Benevolent Fund (per semester) | 700 | UG fee circular |
| Student Accident Insurance Fund (per semester) | 300 | UG fee circular |
| Medical fee (per semester) | 1,950 | UG fee circular |
| Per-semester total | 1,07,350 | UG fee circular |
| Refundable institute and library deposits (one-time) | 6,000 | UG fee circular |
| First-payment grand total | 1,23,350 | UG fee circular |
Students in the SC, ST and PwD categories are exempt from the tuition fee, and foreign nationals without a PIO or OCI card pay ₹3,00,000 tuition in place of the ₹1,00,000 (UG fee circular). Master's, Ph.D and MBA fees are set separately in each programme's own circular, so treat the table above as the undergraduate schedule, not a figure for the whole institute. Income-linked tuition remission and merit-cum-means help are handled by the institute's financial-assistance office, and central and state awards run through the National Scholarship Portal.
Admissions
Admission to the B.Tech and Dual Degree programmes is entirely rank-based. You clear JEE Main to qualify for JEE Advanced, and seats are then allotted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority on your JEE Advanced rank and your filled-in preferences, per the academic office. The B.Des takes its own route through UCEED, and a few B.S. Mathematics seats go to students who qualify the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad.
Postgraduate entry is exam-specific. Most M.Tech admissions run on a valid GATE score; the two-year M.Sc is filled through the Joint Admission Test for Masters, and IIT Bombay is itself the organising institute for JAM 2026; the M.Des uses CEED; and the MBA at the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management shortlists on a valid CAT score before its own interview (master's admissions). Across every programme the entrance exam is the filter, and IIT Bombay keeps no management or direct-admission quota that lets a candidate bypass it.
Cutoff
IIT Bombay does not publish a single cutoff you can measure yourself against, and any table that shows one is reconstructing it after the fact. The binding figures are the opening and closing ranks that the Joint Seat Allocation Authority releases for each branch, category and round at josaa.nic.in. What makes Powai distinctive is how far its strongest branch pulls ahead of the rest: Computer Science and Engineering here has for years closed at among the tightest ranks in the entire JoSAA process, so at IIT Bombay the hard thing to clear is a branch, not the institute. A rank that comfortably wins a mid-demand branch on this campus can still fall well short of its CSE seat in the same round.
Placements
IIT Bombay reports placement participation, not a headline salary. Its official statistics record that in 2023-24, across all programmes, 2,529 students registered for placement, 2,091 took part and 1,582 were placed (Pocket Statistics 2023-24). The programme-wise split is where the detail lives.
| Programme | Registered | Participated | Placed | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech. | 930 | 819 | 683 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
| Dual Degree (B.Tech. + M.Tech.) | 216 | 192 | 152 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
| M.Tech. | 564 | 497 | 415 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
| M.Sc. (2-year) | 228 | 158 | 87 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
| M.Des. | 69 | 63 | 36 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
| B.Des. | 26 | 17 | 9 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
| MPP | 11 | 6 | 0 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
| MBA | 115 | 112 | 112 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
| All programmes | 2,529 | 2,091 | 1,582 | Pocket Statistics 2023-24 |
The programme rows above do not sum to the all-programmes total: Ph.D., M.S. by Research and a few smaller streams are counted in the total but not broken out here.
The institute does not put a consolidated average or highest package in these statistics, so treat the viral highest-CTC figures that circulate each December with caution and read the Placement Office's own placement report for the recruiter-level detail. The counts also make a quieter point: roughly one in six of the 819 participating B.Tech students went unplaced that year, while the MBA cohort placed all 112 of its participants (Pocket Statistics 2023-24).
Seat Matrix
Rankings
Across the NIRF 2025 tables, IIT Bombay ranks in the top four for the Overall, Engineering, Research and Innovation lists, and only its management school sits further down. Here is where it lands in each category it appears in.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall | 3 | 81.62 | NIRF Overall |
| Engineering | 3 | 83.65 | NIRF Engineering |
| Research | 4 | 77.80 | NIRF Research |
| Management | 14 | 65.82 | NIRF Management |
| Innovation | 2 | Not published | NIRF Innovation |
The component scores say more than the headline rank. In the Overall table, IIT Bombay scores 83.35 on perception and 86.04 on graduation outcomes on NIRF's 100-point scale; perception is the metric that stands in for how employers and academic peers rate the place. The management rank of 14 is the Shailesh J. Mehta School's own standing, a smaller school inside a technology institute, so read it separately from the engineering and research numbers. Globally, the institute's Pocket Statistics 2023-24 record it at 118th in the world and first in India in the QS World University Rankings 2025, a foreign body ranking an Indian institution and one input among several, not the whole picture.
Departments
The teaching is organised into 17 academic departments, plus three named schools that run design, management and entrepreneurship, per the Pocket Statistics 2023-24. The engineering block is the largest, but a student picking a branch through JoSAA is choosing one of these units, so the list is worth reading before you rank preferences.
| Grouping | Units at IIT Bombay |
|---|---|
| Engineering departments | Aerospace Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Energy Science and Engineering; Environmental Science and Engineering; Industrial Engineering and Operations Research; Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science |
| Science departments | Biosciences and Bioengineering; Chemistry; Earth Sciences; Mathematics; Physics |
| Humanities and social sciences | Economics; Humanities and Social Sciences |
| Schools | Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship; IDC School of Design; Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management |
The three schools are what make the place broader than an engineering college: the IDC School of Design runs the B.Des and M.Des, the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management runs the MBA and Executive MBA, and the Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship anchors the start-up teaching. Alongside these sit 35 other academic entities, including interdisciplinary centres such as the Centre for Machine Intelligence and Data Science and the Koita Centre for Digital Health (Pocket Statistics 2023-24).
Facilities & Infrastructure
IIT Bombay's campus is a wooded, fully residential estate at Powai, on the shore of Powai Lake, with on-campus hostels, a hospital, a central library and the Student Gymkhana's sports grounds and swimming pool (about IIT Bombay). It sits in north-east Mumbai, so a student here lives inside a self-contained township rather than commuting across the city.
What sets the place apart is its research plant. National facilities on campus include the Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility, the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education and the Tata Centre for Technology and Design, and in the 2023-24 financial year the institute ran 355 sponsored research projects worth ₹389.32 crore and 779 consultancy projects worth ₹170.66 crore, and was granted 467 patents (Pocket Statistics 2023-24). For an applicant, the laboratory and centre density, not the buildings, is the reason a research-minded student picks Powai.
Hostel
IIT Bombay is a residential campus, and its Student Gymkhana lists 17 hostels: Hostels 1 to 9 and 12 to 15 (A and B wings) for men, and Hostels 10, 10A, 11 and 15 (C wing) for women (hostel affairs). The charges are billed separately from the academic fee by the Hostel Coordinating Unit, and every resident pays them on top of the tuition schedule above.
For an on-roll undergraduate in the 2023-24 batch, the Autumn 2024-25 hostel charges break down as follows, on top of which every student staying in a hostel pays a per-semester mess advance.
| Hostel fee head | Amount per semester (₹) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity and water charges | 4,000 | Hostel fee circular, Autumn 2024-25 |
| Hostel establishment charges | 3,600 | Hostel fee circular, Autumn 2024-25 |
| Hostel rent | 2,400 | Hostel fee circular, Autumn 2024-25 |
| Mess establishment charges | 1,900 | Hostel fee circular, Autumn 2024-25 |
| Hostel amenities fund | 1,500 | Hostel fee circular, Autumn 2024-25 |
| Total hostel fee | 13,400 | Hostel fee circular, Autumn 2024-25 |
| Per-semester mess advance | 22,500 | Hostel fee circular, Autumn 2024-25 |
| Total payable per semester | 35,900 | Hostel fee circular, Autumn 2024-25 |
A one-time refundable hostel-mess security deposit is charged once at the start of the stay, and the ₹22,500 mess advance may be paid in two instalments of ₹11,250 (hostel fee circular). Postgraduate and Ph.D hostel charges, including a higher mess advance, are set out in the same circular series.
Faculty
IIT Bombay is served by 733 faculty on roll, alongside about 150 visiting and part-time faculty (Pocket Statistics 2023-24). The teaching staff and the research staff are the same people: that faculty produced the 467 granted patents and the sponsored research noted above, and the institute's statistics record its members holding national honours including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and the J.C. Bose and Swarnajayanti Fellowships (Pocket Statistics 2023-24). Doctoral supervision is a large share of that work: 3,687 of the institute's students, more than a quarter of the roll, are enrolled for a PhD.
Notable Alumni
IIT Bombay confers a Distinguished Alumnus Award each Foundation Day, and its official roll of recipients is the honest place to read who came through Powai rather than the lists that circulate online (distinguished alumni). A few of the widely recognised names on it:
| Name | Programme at IIT Bombay | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Nandan Nilekani | B.Tech, Electrical Engineering | Co-founder of Infosys; former chairman of the UIDAI (Aadhaar) |
| Manohar Parrikar | B.Tech, Metallurgical Engineering | Former Defence Minister of India and Chief Minister of Goa |
| Jairam Ramesh | B.Tech, Mechanical Engineering | Union Minister and Member of Parliament |
| Nitin Nohria | B.Tech, Chemical Engineering | Former Dean of Harvard Business School |
| Salil Parekh | B.Tech, Aerospace Engineering | Chief Executive Officer of Infosys |
| Kanwal Rekhi | B.Tech, Electrical Engineering | Silicon Valley entrepreneur and technology investor |
The spread is the point worth noting: the same undergraduate engineering degree has fed technology founders, a defence minister, a business-school dean and venture investors. For the full year-by-year list, the alumni association's own record is the authority, not a crowd-edited page.
