Indian Institute Of Management, Shillong

East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya Est. 2007 Official site Updated
NIRF Management
#38

IIM Shillong placed its entire 2024-26 graduating batch of 393 students and still reported a median package of Rs 26.00 LPA, more than Rs 45 LPA below the class's highest offer of Rs 71.50 LPA, in its own final placement report. That spread, not the headline number, is the figure a CAT taker weighing a preference for Shillong should read first. India's seventh IIM and the first set up in the Northeast, it sits 38th on the Ministry of Education's NIRF 2025 management list, screens general-category applicants at a flat 75th CAT percentile, and then gives the personal interview exactly the same weight in final selection as the CAT score itself.

Overview

IIM Shillong is a public business school the Government of India established in 2007, the seventh Indian Institute of Management and the first located in the North-Eastern region, per its institutional record. Its founding name was the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, usually shortened to RGIIM. The "Rajiv Gandhi" prefix was dropped when the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017 folded the school into the single naming convention shared by every IIM, so an applicant reading older prospectuses or a parent who remembers RGIIM is looking at the same institute under its current legal name.

Two facts frame how the school should be read. Established in 2007, the school is young enough that its oldest alumni are barely into the senior stretch of their careers, so the dense, multi-generational recruiter relationships an Ahmedabad or Calcutta graduate can lean on are still being built here rather than already in place. The degree itself carries no such discount: the 2017 Act made every IIM an institution of national importance and let Shillong award its own MBA rather than the post-graduate diploma the system ran on for decades. Its objectives, written into its own handbook, include one no metropolitan IIM lists, to train the people of the North-Eastern Region to raise their employability and entrepreneurial capacity, as the PGP handbook states.

Courses & Fees

For all the programmes listed below, a CAT score reaches only one of them: the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management. That residential MBA is the cohort the placement report counts, and everything else in the portfolio takes its own entrance route. Alongside the flagship PGP it offers a one-year full-time PGPEx for experienced managers, a two-year flexi-hybrid PGP for Working Executives, a five-year Integrated Programme in Management that took its first undergraduate cohort in 2025, and doctoral tracks in both a four-year residential and a working-professional format, all listed on its own site.

ProgrammeFormatEntrance route

PGPExOne-year full-time residentialInstitute's own selection
PGP for Working ExecutivesTwo-year flexi-hybridInstitute's own selection
Integrated Programme in Management (IPM)Five-yearInstitute's own process
Doctoral Programme and Doctoral (Working Professionals)Four-year residential and part-timeInstitute's own process

The two-year PGP is built as six terms across two academic years that run June or July through February or March, with a compulsory two-month corporate internship wedged between the two years and a self-directed Course of Independent Study available in the second, as the handbook lays out. On the total fee, IIM Shillong does not publish a single consolidated figure on a stable public page the way it publishes its admission and placement documents. The programme fee covers tuition, hostel and mess billed across those six terms, and the reliable number for the batch you are joining is the one the admissions office and the current handbook issue directly, so confirm it there rather than trusting a round figure copied between listing sites.

Admissions

Admission to the PGP is decided in two phases that IIM Shillong runs on its own, and its shortlist is drawn independently of every other IIM, so a candidate called by one campus may not be called here and the other way round, per the 2026-28 admission process document. Phase 1 screens on CAT percentiles and then ranks the survivors on a Composite Score; Phase 2 conducts the personal interview and builds the final merit list. Eligibility is a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks, relaxed to 45% for SC, ST and Differently Abled candidates, as the admission process page sets out.

The Composite Score that governs the interview shortlist is the piece worth studying. It blends the total CAT percentile at a 65% weight with a Normalised Application Rating Score at 35%, and that rating score is itself assembled from marks for Class X, Class XII and graduation percentages plus a work-experience credit, under the same document. The experience curve does not simply reward the longest tenure: it peaks in the 18-to-24-month band at 14 points, is nearly as generous at 12 to 18 months, and then falls away until anyone with 42 months or more scores zero, the same as a fresher.

The final tally is where Shillong makes its intent plain. The CAT and the personal interview each count for 40 of every 100 marks, level-pegged so the interview is no tie-breaker sitting beneath the score, and the remaining fifth is split between the application rating and a gender credit, as Table 8 of the admission document sets out. The gender credit goes to every candidate outside the gender that dominates that year's CAT pool, a lever the school uses to keep close to a balanced classroom. There is a floor on the interview itself, a minimum a candidate must clear in the personal interview to stay on the list at all, and communication proficiency is judged in the room but deliberately left out of the scored total.

Cutoff

The CAT percentile at IIM Shillong is a Phase 1 gate to be considered, not the score that wins a seat. For the 2026-28 batch a general-category or EWS candidate must clear the 75th percentile in each of the three CAT sections and overall, with no single number standing in for the sectional bars, in Table 1 of the admission document. The reserved-category floors drop steeply from there, and the SC bar of 60 and the ST bar of 50 are notably softer than the general 75.

CategoryMinimum CAT 2025 percentile (each section and overall)
General and EWS75
SC60
ST50
Differently Abled50

Each figure here is only the threshold for entering the Composite Score ranking; clearing it puts a candidate in contention without deciding anything. Because the interview then carries as much final weight as the CAT and the academic and gender credits move the line further, the percentile that actually secures a seat settles well after this screen, and the school reserves the right to revise the criteria if the profile of its applicant pool shifts in a given year. IIM Shillong also declines to publish any closing cut-off score after the fact, releasing only the lowest overall score among admitted candidates to those left on the waitlist.

Placements

The most recent official read is IIM Shillong's final placement report for the PGP 2024-26 batch, covering all 393 graduating students, of whom 45% were women. The institute reports the batch as fully placed, drawing 147 recruiters including 51 first-time recruiters, on the back of 102 pre-placement offers carried in from the summer internship.

PGP 2024-26 metricValue
Highest CTCRs 71.50 LPA
Average CTCRs 27.03 LPA
Median CTCRs 26.00 LPA
Top 50% averageRs 30.51 LPA
Students placed393
Recruiters147 (51 new)

The number to hold onto is the distance between the Rs 71.50 LPA top offer and the Rs 26.00 LPA median, because the headline comes off a single seat at the top of the class while the median describes the middle of it. Even the top 50% averaged Rs 30.51 LPA, closer to the median than to the peak. Consulting was the largest destination at 30% of offers, followed by finance at 25%, sales and marketing at 18% and IT and analytics at 14%, on the same report; the highest package of the season came out of the IT and analytics domain, while general management topped out at Rs 44.80 LPA and sales and marketing at Rs 42.50 LPA.

Seat Matrix

IIM Shillong does not fix a published sanctioned intake in its admission document. The number of candidates it calls for interview, and by extension the class it enrols, is set each cycle against the year's CAT performance, the seats available, and past attendance and overlap trends, as the admission process document explains. On reservation the document commits only to following the Government of India policy as it applies to IIM Shillong, distributed across the shortlist by social category with a further horizontal share set aside for Differently Abled candidates, under the same document. For a sense of scale, the cohort that finished the two-year programme in 2026 numbered 393 students, as the final placement report records, so the enrolled class sits in that region rather than the far larger cohorts the metro IIMs admit. The call count is redrawn every cycle and the institute reserves the right to change its criteria partway through, so any category-wise expectation should be checked against what the admissions office is working with for the batch you are joining rather than a figure carried over from a past year.

Rankings

The one national scorecard IIM Shillong can point to is NIRF 2025, the Education Ministry's annual exercise, which lists the institute at 38 among management schools on a 57.70. For a school founded in 2007, clearing into the national top 40 puts it ahead of the great majority of Indian business schools the ranking reaches, even as the gap to the metros at the head of the table stays real.

Behind that overall score the institute's profile is lopsided in a way its youth explains. Its clear strength is graduation outcomes, the parameter that rewards a placement record like the one above, and its teaching-and-resources score holds up well alongside it. What pulls the overall down are perception and research, the two parameters fed by a long publication record and a brand built over decades, and where a 2007 school in a smaller city has had both the fewest years and the thinnest metro visibility to draw on. That shape, strong on outcomes and thin on research reputation, is the signature of a capable younger IIM rather than anything peculiar to Shillong.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The single biggest change to IIM Shillong's infrastructure is where it sits. The institute began life in the renovated Mayurbhanj Palace, a former summer retreat, and has since moved onto a purpose-built permanent campus at Umsawli in the East Khasi Hills, at Shillong 793018, as its record and its own site show. The PGP is a fully residential programme for its two years, and the institute markets the setting, high in the Meghalaya hills, as a "campus in the clouds", on its homepage.

The academic core of the campus is the Knowledge Center, the institute's name for its library, which the handbook frames as the participant's constant companion across the six terms, alongside the hostel that the same document calls a home away from home for the two years, per the PGP handbook. For a candidate weighing the location, the trade is clear enough: a newer, residential hill campus and a smaller-city rhythm in exchange for the metro proximity and heavier corporate footfall of the older IIMs.

Hostel

Faculty

IIM Shillong organises its teaching around subject areas rather than a single institute-wide headcount, and it presents its professors as individual profiles across those groups on its own faculty pages. At an IIM the MBA's core and elective courses are taught out of those areas, so the depth a candidate actually cares about lives at the level of the specific group, whether that is finance, marketing, operations, economics or organisational behaviour, not a total staff number.

That is why the useful question is not a faculty count lifted from a listing site the institute never vouches for, but the strength of the one area you would study most. Read that group's own professors and what they have published on the institute's faculty pages, and you have measured the thing a single headline number only gestures at, particularly at a school whose NIRF research score signals a faculty still building its published output.

Verified

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

What certifies IIM Shillong is an Act of Parliament rather than a graded campus inspection, which is why an applicant will not find a NAAC grade or an NBA programme accreditation attached to it. Shillong is one of the campuses named in the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, the statute that made every IIM an institution of national importance and handed it degree-granting power, and that standing is the right lens for judging it against the NAAC and NBA scales built for universities and affiliated colleges.

On the international side, the marquee badges are recent and real. The Press Information Bureau announced in May 2026 that IIM Shillong had earned AACSB accreditation, placing it among the small share of business schools worldwide that hold it, in the Government of India's own release. The institute also holds EQUIS, the European quality standard, and displays AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA together as its international accreditations, on its own site. Collecting the field's most demanding global marks this early in its life is the substantive line here for a young IIM, more telling than any domestic grade the institute is structurally outside of.

Aid

Scholarships

IIM Shillong routes most of its fee support through government schemes rather than a large in-house scholarship pool. Its handbook points SC and ST participants to central scholarships that cover the entire tuition fee along with other non-refundable charges, with narrower schemes for minorities and persons with disability that meet part of the cost, all applied for online through the National Scholarship Portal, as the handbook sets out. SC candidates are directed to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and ST candidates to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for the detailed eligibility terms.

Beyond the category schemes, the institute runs a need-based financial assistance route that a participant applies for directly to the Chairperson of the PGP, under the same handbook. A candidate counting on aid should treat the government portal as the main channel and the institute's own assistance as a supplement to raise with the PGP office once admitted, rather than a headline merit scholarship advertised at the point of offer.

Voices

Student Reviews

There is no official IIM Shillong satisfaction rating to quote, because the institute measures and releases no such number; a star figure in this spot could only be lifted from a coaching site or a listings aggregator, unaudited and never endorsed by the school. What a star score pretends to fold into one number, how well each area teaches, what living on the Umsawli campus is actually like, and how the most recent placements really turned out, is worth investigating on its own terms, but the aggregator's rating is not something IIM Shillong has ever vouched for.

Thirty minutes with someone currently living at Umsawli, or with a 2024-26 alumnus, will tell a candidate more than any untraceable pooled score, provided the questions are direct: how the personal interview really ran, what daily life on a hill campus far from a metro is like, and which employer they eventually signed with.
