Great Lakes Institute Of Management

Chennai, Tamil Nadu Est. 2004 Official site Updated
NIRF Management
#37

Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai asks Rs 22,50,000 for its two-year PGDM, and what a graduate collects at the end is an AICTE-approved diploma, not a university MBA degree, per the institute's fee sheet. It sits 37th on the NIRF 2025 management ranking, and it publishes no cut-off percentile at all: a CAT, XAT or GMAT score gets the application read, and two interviews decide the seat.

The Class of 2025 averaged 15 lakhs a year, on the institute's own PGDM placement report. Set that number against that fee and the arithmetic of a Great Lakes offer gets straightforward to run.

Overview

Great Lakes Chennai is a standalone institute. It is not a university and it is not affiliated to one, which is why it cannot confer a degree and instead grants the diploma an autonomous AICTE-approved management institute is entitled to grant. The national higher-education register lists the Chennai entity as a private, un-aided standalone institution in Tamil Nadu.

The founder is the reference point most applicants start from. Great Lakes was established in 2004 by Dr. Bala V. Balachandran, a Padma Shri awardee and Professor Emeritus at the Kellogg School of Management, on the institute's own account of itself. His imprint shows up in two structural choices that still define the place: the one-year programme is treated as the flagship rather than the two-year one, and international visiting professors carry a large share of the teaching.

The word "Chennai" in the name is a postal convenience worth reading literally. The campus stands at Manamai Village on the East Coast Road in Chengalpattu district, 60 km from Chennai airport and 9 km short of Mahabalipuram, on the institute's contact page. A second Great Lakes campus operates in Gurgaon and earns its own line on the same NIRF management list at 50th, with its own admissions, so a Gurgaon fee or salary figure does not transfer to Chennai.

Courses & Fees

Two full-time programmes take almost all the applicant traffic, and they differ by who they are built for rather than by subject. The PGPM runs for one year and requires prior work experience; the PGDM runs for two and is capped at candidates who have barely any. Three narrower tracks sit alongside them: a one-year edition for family-business heirs, an 18-month modular programme for senior managers, and a doctoral programme.

ProgrammeDurationEntrance route
PGPM (Post Graduate Programme in Management)1 yearCAT / XAT / GMAT / NMAT
PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management)2 yearsCAT / XAT / GMAT
PGPM-FBE (Family Business and Entrepreneurship)1 yearCAT / XAT / GMAT / NMAT, or the institute's own GREAT test
PGXPM (Post Graduate eXecutive Programme in Management)18 months, modularNo entrance test; 8 years of full-time experience
FPM (Fellow Programme in Management)4 to 5 yearsJRF (NET) / CAT / GMAT / GRE / XAT
Sources: PGDM, PGPM, PGPM-FBE, PGXPM and FPM programme pages

The figure most searches are after is the two-year total. The official fee sheet puts the PGDM 2026-28 batch at Rs 22,50,000, with campus residence already inside that number rather than billed on top of it.

Fee head (PGDM 2026-28)Amount
Tuition feeRs 10,25,000
Programme feeRs 5,78,000
Accommodation (twin-sharing AC)Rs 6,32,000
Refundable caution depositRs 10,000
Alumni subscriptionRs 5,000
Total programme costRs 22,50,000

The one-year PGPM carries the larger sticker price of the two. Its fee structure totals Rs 23,50,000 for an Indian student in 2026-27, of which Rs 19,39,000 is academic fee and Rs 4,11,000 covers a single AC room plus the deposits. So the compressed programme costs about a lakh more in absolute rupees while removing a second year of foregone salary, and that trade, not the sticker gap, is what separates the two for anyone eligible for both.

Admissions

An entrance percentile opens the file at Great Lakes; it does not close it. For the two-year PGDM the accepted tests are CAT, XAT and GMAT, and eligibility is a bachelor's degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% across class 10, class 12 and the undergraduate degree, per the PGDM admissions page. The unusual condition is a ceiling on experience rather than a floor: only freshers and candidates with strictly less than 36 months of full-time work experience may apply, because the programme is built for people early in their careers.

Scores also come with a shelf life, which trips up applicants who sat a test years ahead of applying. The same page limits the 2027 intake to a GMAT taken on or after 1 January 2024, a CAT taken in 2025 or 2026, and an XAT taken in 2026 or 2027.

The application itself costs INR 2,200 online, on the same admissions page. Shortlisted candidates then sit an AI-proctored video interview, and those who clear it go to a personal interview, after which the admissions committee weighs academics, the test score, both interview performances and background diversity together before an offer is made.

The one-year PGPM inverts the experience rule. It asks for a minimum of 2 years of full-time work experience by April of the admission year and accepts NMAT alongside CAT, XAT and GMAT, on its programme page.

Cutoff

There is no Great Lakes cut-off percentile, and any number circulating as one has been reverse-engineered by a coaching forum rather than published by the institute. What the school does publish is a set of qualifying floors, which is a different thing: the admissions page states a minimum of 50% across class 10, class 12 and the undergraduate degree, a valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score inside its validity window, and, for the PGDM, less than 36 months of work experience.

Clear those and the decision moves to the two interviews. An applicant with a strong academic record and a thin interview can lose a seat to a lower scorer here, and that is the intended behaviour of the process rather than an inconsistency in it. The practical implication is that preparation time is better split than a percentile-chasing candidate usually splits it: the test earns the shortlist, the AI-proctored round and the personal interview earn the offer.

Placements

The two-year PGDM's own report is the cleanest recent read. For the PGDM Class of 2025, the average CTC was 15 lakhs a year and the highest offer was 39.3 lakhs a year from a multinational fintech firm, with 63 students holding pre-placement offers earned during their summer internships. Deloitte, JP Morgan Chase, ICICI Bank and Infosys Consulting made the largest number of offers that season, ahead of Accenture, EY, PwC, Gartner, Wells Fargo, HCL, Nestle and ITC.

PGDM placements (Class of 2025)Value
Average CTC15 LPA
Highest CTC39.3 LPA
Pre-placement offers63

Read the 15 lakhs as a first-job number, because that is what it is. The PGDM cohort averages 23 years of age and holds 155+ years of work experience between roughly 340 students, on the programme page, so almost nobody in it is being re-priced against an existing salary.

The one-year PGPM is the opposite case, and its report says so in the only metric that captures it. Its latest batch averaged 18 lakhs a year with a highest domestic offer of 40 lakhs a year from a multinational consulting firm, and the cohort recorded 2.6x growth on its average incoming CTC, on the PGPM placement report. That multiple, not the headline average, is the number an experienced applicant should be testing against their current pay.

Seat Matrix

A private un-aided institute fills no statutory reservation grid, so there is no category-wise sanctioned-seat table for Great Lakes to publish and none to look for. Intake is stated as cohort size instead: the PGDM runs at 340+ students, on its programme page, and the PGPM at 350+, on its own.

What stands in for a seat matrix here is the class profile, and it is more informative than a quota table would be. The PGDM cohort is 71% non-engineers and 45% accounting and finance graduates, with 30% female candidates and an average age of 23, on the PGDM page. The PGPM cohort is older and already working, at an average age of 25 with 3.2 years of average experience, 40+ industries represented and 24% female candidates, on the PGPM page. An applicant from a non-engineering background has a visibly larger opening at Great Lakes than at schools whose intake skews technical.

Those proportions move each admission cycle, so the numbers to budget against are the ones on the programme page for the batch actually being joined.

Rankings

Great Lakes Chennai holds 37th place on the NIRF 2025 management ranking with an overall score of 58.05. That is the one externally audited position it has, and it is worth more attention than the tier-one and tier-two labels applied to it on forums, which nobody scores or publishes.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore out of 100
Overall58.05
Teaching, Learning and Resources80.97
Research and Professional Practice32.86
Graduation Outcomes73.90
Outreach and Inclusivity70.72
Perception20.50

The five parameters spread very widely, and the spread is the useful part. Teaching, learning and resources at 80.97 is the strongest of the five by a distance and matches what the fee pays for: a small residential campus with a large full-time and visiting faculty. Graduation outcomes at 73.90 tracks the placement report. Research and professional practice at 32.86 and perception at 20.50 are what hold the overall score down, and both reward things a two-decade-old private school accumulates slowly, a publication record and recruiter-and-academic name recognition.

Perception is also where the two Great Lakes campuses separate most sharply. Chennai scores 20.50 there against Gurgaon's 3.82 on the same 2025 table, which is a useful correction for anyone treating the two as interchangeable because they share a name.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus is doing real work in the fee here, not decorating it. Great Lakes teaches from a 32 acre green campus that was the first in South Asia to receive a LEED Platinum rating, on its campus page, with a gymnasium, a library holding both business and fiction collections, a football field, a basketball court and an auditorium, and the campus open around the clock.

The location is the trade-off attached to all of that. Sixty kilometres from Chennai airport on the East Coast Road, students are on a self-contained site rather than in a city with corporate offices at commuting distance, which suits a compressed one-year calendar and a residential two-year one but rules out the weekday networking a metro campus offers.

Because both flagship programmes are residential, accommodation is inside the published fee rather than added to it: twin-sharing AC rooms in the PGDM total and a single AC room in the PGPM total. Comparing sticker prices against a city school without adjusting for that will overstate the Great Lakes figure.

Hostel

Faculty

Great Lakes publishes its teaching strength rather than leaving it to be inferred. The PGDM page reports 50+ full-time faculty alongside 25+ international visiting faculty drawn from schools including Kellogg, Stanford and Yale, on the programme page.

That second number is the founder's model still running, and it cuts both ways. Visiting professors bring current international practice into a term that a purely resident faculty could not, and they also rotate, so the named professor on a particular elective may not be the one who taught it last year. A candidate choosing Great Lakes for a specific specialisation should confirm who is teaching it in the term they will actually be there, rather than relying on an alumni recommendation from an earlier batch.

Verified

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

Great Lakes carries four accreditations and one statutory approval, and its own timeline dates each of them. AMBA, the UK association of MBAs, accredited the PGDM and PGPM in 2014; SAQS, the South Asian quality assurance system run by AMDISA, followed in 2015; the National Board of Accreditation accredited the PGDM in 2016; and AACSB accredited the institute in 2023, on the institute's about page. AICTE approval sits under all of it, and is the thing that makes granting a Post Graduate Diploma in Management lawful in the first place.

That mix answers the question applicants ask about a diploma. Two of the four marks are awarded by foreign bodies assessing an Indian school against international business-school standards, and the NBA one is Indian and programme-level, assessed on outcomes rather than on inputs.

No NAAC grade exists against the name, and that is a question of register rather than of quality. NAAC assesses universities and affiliated colleges; a standalone institute is outside its remit, so looking for a NAAC letter here is looking in the wrong list.

Aid

Scholarships

Aid at Great Lakes is a fixed, published pool rather than a case-by-case negotiation. The PGDM fee page states that 40 scholarships worth Rs 5 lakhs each are awarded to incoming students, that a minimum of 30% of them are reserved for female candidates, and that the Dr. Bala V. Balachandran Merit Scholarship carries a 100% tuition fee waiver plus mentorship for the strongest admits.

It pays to know what each award actually removes from the bill. A Rs 5 lakhs scholarship comes off the Rs 22,50,000 total. The Balachandran waiver clears the Rs 10,25,000 tuition head, while the Rs 5,78,000 programme fee and the Rs 6,32,000 accommodation charge still stand, so even the top award leaves a substantial balance to fund. Terms are reset every cycle, so confirm the pool against the fee page for the batch being joined before treating any of it as budgeted.

Voices

Student Reviews

No star rating is shown here. Great Lakes runs no verified review score of its own, and the numbers attached to it on listing and coaching portals are collected without audit and carry no endorsement from the institute, so publishing one would dress up an unverified figure as a finding.

There is also a structural reason a single Great Lakes score would mislead. The one-year PGPM and the two-year PGDM run on the same campus with different cohorts, different calendars and different placement seasons, so an account of one describes very little about the other. An applicant is better served by finding a current student or recent graduate of the specific programme being applied to and asking about workload on a residential campus well outside Chennai, and about how their own placement season went.
