Indian Institute Of Technology, Madras
IIT Madras holds the No. 1 rank on the Ministry of Education's NIRF 2025 Overall list and the No. 1 rank in NIRF 2025 Engineering, the only institution to lead both tables at once. It grew out of a 1959 Indo-German project in Chennai, per the institute's history, and its postgraduate and doctoral programmes now enrol more students than its undergraduate degrees. For anyone applying, the number worth knowing early is that its Computer Science and Data Science branches close at the tightest JEE Advanced ranks on campus, so the branch you can reach matters more than the institute name.
Overview
IIT Madras began with a 1956 offer of assistance from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, made to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru during an official visit to West Germany, which led to the signing of the first Indo-German Agreement in Bonn in 1959 for an Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. The Institute was formally inaugurated the same year, and in 1961 Parliament declared it an Institute of National Importance, per the institute's own history.
The Ministry of Education recognises IIT Madras as an Institute of Eminence, and its teaching runs across academic departments in engineering, the sciences, and the humanities and management, per the institute's about page. Its enrolment now leans postgraduate: in 2023-24 the institute recorded 3,589 students in its four-year undergraduate programmes and 1,186 in its five-year ones, against 1,859 two-year master's students, 507 three-year master's students, and 2,469 full-time doctoral scholars, according to its NIRF 2025 data submission. The research degrees, not the four-year B.Tech, are where most of the campus now sits.
Courses & Fees
IIT Madras teaches the four-year B.Tech and B.S., the five-year Dual Degree and Interdisciplinary Dual Degree that pair a bachelor's with a master's, and, above them, the M.Tech, M.Sc, M.A, MBA and MS by Research, alongside doctoral programmes in every department. The undergraduate degrees are the ones filled through JEE Advanced; the postgraduate degrees each run on their own national entrance test.
| Programme | Duration | Entrance route | Indian-national fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech / B.S. | 4 years | JEE Advanced then JoSAA | ₹1,15,402 per semester |
| Dual Degree / IDDD | 5 years | JEE Advanced then JoSAA | ₹1,15,402 per semester (B.Tech years) |
| M.Tech | 2 years | GATE | Set per programme |
| M.Sc | 2 years | IIT JAM | Set per programme |
| M.A | 2 years | Own entrance | Set per programme |
| MBA | 2 years | CAT then interview | ₹2,95,402 per semester |
| Ph.D | Varies | GATE / UGC-NET / interview | Set per programme |
IIT Madras sets the undergraduate fee centrally and publishes it head by head in the Academic Section's semester circular, and the tuition line dwarfs everything else on it. For a General, OBC-NCL or EWS entrant whose family income is above ₹5 lakh a year, the per-semester institute fee for a B.Tech or B.S. breaks down as follows.
| Fee head | Amount (₹) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fee | 1,00,000 | Institute fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Enrolment fee | 1,500 | Institute fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Medical fee | 1,500 | Institute fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Seat rent | 7,500 | Institute fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Extra-curricular fee | 2,000 | Institute fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Student wellness fee | 500 | Institute fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Student medical insurance premium (per year) | 2,402 | Institute fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Per-semester total | 1,15,402 | Institute fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
Of those heads only the ₹2,402 medical-insurance premium is billed once a year; the circular folds it into the semester total above, and the rest recur each semester. The tuition line is also where family income changes the bill. A General, OBC-NCL or EWS student whose family earns below ₹1 lakh a year has the tuition waived in full and pays ₹15,402 a semester, and one earning between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh has two-thirds of it remitted and pays ₹48,735, per the institute fee circular. SC, ST and PwD Indian students pay no tuition at all. Foreign nationals without a PIO or OCI card pay ₹5,00,000 in tuition rather than ₹1,00,000, and their insurance is arranged separately by the Office of Global Engagement, so their per-semester institute total is ₹5,13,000. Master's and doctoral fees are set in each programme's own schedule; the MBA at the Department of Management Studies is the costliest degree here at ₹2,95,402 a semester for a 2024-batch General student, driven by its ₹2,50,000 tuition and a ₹30,000 teaching-materials and industry-interaction charge (institute fee circular).
Admissions
A B.Tech, B.S. or Dual Degree seat at IIT Madras is won on a JEE Advanced rank and nothing else. You qualify through JEE Main, sit JEE Advanced, and then enter the branch preferences the Joint Seat Allocation Authority uses to allot a seat; the institute runs no application of its own and keeps no management or donation quota, and it confirms in its NIRF 2025 data submission that its seats are filled through national and state-level entrance examinations.
The postgraduate doors each open on a different exam. A GATE score feeds the M.Tech, the Joint Admission Test for Masters feeds the two-year M.Sc, and the Department of Management Studies shortlists MBA applicants on CAT before interviewing them; doctoral admission is run department by department on a GATE score or a UGC-NET pass with an interview. None of these routes has a paid or discretionary shortcut, so the exam is the only lever a candidate controls.
Cutoff
There is no cutoff mark to clear at IIT Madras, because a seat is not decided by a score. It is decided by where your JEE Advanced rank lands against the closing rank for the exact branch and category you list, and the Joint Seat Allocation Authority publishes those opening and closing ranks round by round at josaa.nic.in. Two branches distort the whole picture here: Computer Science and Engineering, and the newer Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programme, are the ones most top rankers put first, so they close at ranks far ahead of the rest of the campus. That changes how you fill the JoSAA form specifically at Madras. A rank that would comfortably take a core engineering branch here can miss both computing branches in the same round, which forces a real choice: a lower-demand branch at IIT Madras, or a computing seat at another IIT. Because those closing ranks move every year with demand, the only figure worth planning against is the current round's on josaa.nic.in, never one carried over from last year.
Placements
IIT Madras does not headline a single highest package; its official numbers are counts and medians reported programme by programme. For the batch graduating in 2023-24, its NIRF submission records that 549 of the 714 four-year B.Tech graduates were placed, at a median salary of ₹17,50,000, while 153 went straight to higher studies; the five-year Dual Degree cohort placed 215 of 244 at a median of ₹19,40,000, per the NIRF 2025 data submission.
| Programme (2023-24 graduates) | Placed | Median salary (₹) | Higher studies | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UG 4-year (B.Tech / B.S.) | 549 | 17,50,000 | 153 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
| UG 5-year (Dual Degree) | 215 | 19,40,000 | 24 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
| PG 2-year (M.Tech / M.Sc) | 538 | 12,90,000 | 184 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
| PG 3-year | 98 | 12,25,000 | 35 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
The institute's placement office frames the same season differently. As of 30 April 2024 it recorded 1,091 students placed across 256 companies, with more than 80% of B.Tech and Dual Degree students and 75% of master's students placed, at a median salary of ₹19.6 lakh and an average of ₹22 lakh, alongside 44 overseas offers, per the IIT Madras placement release. Read the two records together and the honest point lands: of the 714 four-year graduates the NIRF submission counts, 549 were placed and 153 went straight to higher studies, so the students who are not on the placement list are overwhelmingly ones who chose a master's or PhD over a first job, not ones left without options. The highest-package figures that circulate every December say nothing about that median, which is the number a family should actually plan around.
Seat Matrix
IIT Madras files its sanctioned intake with NIRF each year, and that filing is the closest thing to an official seat matrix for the institute as a whole. For 2023-24 the approved intake was 961 seats across the four-year programmes and 93 across the five-year ones, alongside 172, 916 and 245 seats respectively in its one-, two- and three-year postgraduate programmes, per the NIRF 2025 data submission.
| Programme level | Sanctioned intake 2023-24 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| UG 4-year (B.Tech / B.S.) | 961 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
| UG 5-year (Dual Degree) | 93 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
| PG 1-year | 172 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
| PG 2-year | 916 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
| PG 3-year | 245 | NIRF 2025 data submission |
This is the whole-institute total, not the branch-by-branch split you actually pick from. The category-wise and branch-wise seat matrix for a B.Tech seat, including the General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS and PwD sub-quotas and the female-supernumerary seats, is published each cycle by JoSAA at josaa.nic.in, and that is the list to read before filling preferences.
Rankings
Across the NIRF 2025 tables, IIT Madras is the only institution to lead both the Overall and the Engineering lists, and it sits near the top of Research and Innovation as well. Its management school is the one place it ranks well down the field, which is expected of a small department inside a technology institute.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall | 1 | 87.31 | NIRF Overall |
| Engineering | 1 | 88.72 | NIRF Engineering |
| Research | 2 | 82.99 | NIRF Research |
| Management | 13 | 66.50 | NIRF Management |
| Innovation | 1 | Not published | NIRF Innovation |
What earns the top rank shows in the component scores. On the Overall table IIT Madras posts a perfect 100.00 for Perception, the peer-and-employer reputation score, and pairs it with 90.58 for teaching and 88.02 for research and professional practice. The same 100.00 Perception score reappears in Engineering, where a 95.70 teaching score is what pushes it to first. Read the management rank of 13 apart from the rest: it measures only the Department of Management Studies, not the institute.
Departments
The choice a JEE Advanced qualifier makes on the JoSAA form is really a choice among these departments, so they are worth knowing before you rank them. IIT Madras groups its teaching into core engineering, computing and design, the sciences, and the humanities and management, per the institute's about page.
| Grouping | Departments at IIT Madras |
|---|---|
| Core engineering | Aerospace Engineering; Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Ocean Engineering |
| Computing and design | Computer Science and Engineering; Data Science and Artificial Intelligence; Engineering Design |
| Sciences | Biotechnology; Chemistry; Mathematics; Physics |
| Humanities and management | Humanities and Social Sciences; Management Studies |
Two of these shape today's demand more than the rest: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence now sits alongside Computer Science and Engineering as the branch students chase hardest through JoSAA, and the Department of Management Studies runs the MBA that appears on its own line in the fee and ranking tables above. Around the departments sit a number of interdisciplinary research centres, which is where a large share of the institute's sponsored work is actually done.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The IIT Madras campus is a walled, wooded stretch beside Guindy National Park in south Chennai, and the deer and blackbuck that graze between its buildings are a genuine part of daily life there, per the institute's about page. A student lives on that campus rather than around it.
The reason a research-minded applicant chooses it, though, is the funded work. In 2023-24 the institute ran 801 sponsored research projects backed by 128 agencies and received ₹9,69,47,17,158 for them, alongside 1,560 consultancy projects for 937 client organisations worth ₹3,97,33,33,206, per the NIRF 2025 data submission. That flow of money is what built the IIT Madras Research Park next door, the first university-run research park in the country, now a dense cluster of deep-tech firms that hire on campus and spin out of its laboratories.
Hostel
IIT Madras is a residential campus, and its hostel charges are billed separately from the institute fee by the Office of Hostel Management. For an undergraduate in the vacation category, which covers B.Tech, B.S., Dual Degree, M.A, M.Sc and MBA students, the mandatory hostel fee for the July to November 2025 semester in the 2024 batch breaks down as follows, on top of which every resident pays an advance mess charge.
| Hostel fee head | Amount per semester (₹) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel admission fee | 500 | Hostel fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Establishment A charges | 8,000 | Hostel fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Establishment B charges | 1,500 | Hostel fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| RO water charges | 500 | Hostel fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Waste disposal charges | 250 | Hostel fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Utility charges | 5,000 | Hostel fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
| Total mandatory hostel fee | 15,750 | Hostel fee circular Jul-Nov 2025 |
A first-time resident pays an additional ₹5,000 refundable deposit, taking the new-admission total to ₹20,750, and an optional ₹7,500 covers the Saarang, Shaastra and E-Summit student festivals, per the hostel fee circular. The advance mess charge sits on top of all of this and is deliberately not a fixed number: the circular states it is settled each semester once the mess tender is finalised, so budget for it separately and check the current figure before you pay. Postgraduate and research scholars in the non-vacation category pay a higher establishment charge because theirs covers the vacation period too.
Faculty
IIT Madras listed 686 faculty members in its NIRF 2025 data submission, and the figure that matters sits right beside it: the same submission counts 2,469 full-time doctoral scholars, more than three research students for every faculty member, and records 412 full-time PhDs completed in 2023-24 alone. A department here works as a research group first, led by a professor who is teaching, holding funded grants and steering several theses at once, and that concentration is part of what earns the institute a 90.58 teaching score on the NIRF 2025 Overall ranking.
Notable Alumni
IIT Madras has given its Distinguished Alumnus Award on Institute Day since 1996, and that official roll is where its best-known graduates are actually recorded, per the distinguished alumni record. A handful of names from it show the range.
| Name | Programme at IIT Madras | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Sridhar Vembu | B.Tech, Electrical Engineering | Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation |
| Krishna Bharat | B.Tech, Computer Science | Google principal scientist who created Google News |
| S. Somanath | Ph.D, Mechanical Engineering | Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation |
| Anima Anandkumar | B.Tech, Electrical Engineering | Bren Professor of computing at Caltech, a machine-learning researcher |
| Subra Suresh | B.Tech, Mechanical Engineering | Former Director of the US National Science Foundation |
| V. Prem Watsa | B.Tech, Chemical Engineering | Founder and chairman of Fairfax Financial Holdings |
| Jayant Baliga | B.Tech, Electrical Engineering | Inventor of the insulated-gate bipolar transistor |
On this evidence one undergraduate engineering programme has sent people to run the national space agency, found global software and finance firms, and lead frontier research abroad. The institute's own distinguished alumni record is the list to trust for the rest of the names.
