MICA in Ahmedabad is one of the few Indian business schools where a strong CAT, XAT or GMAT score buys you only 35% of the final admission decision. The rest of the call is settled by MICAT, MICA's own psychometric-and-aptitude paper, plus a group exercise and a personal interview. Its two-year residential PGDM and PGDM-C each carry a total fee of ₹28 lakh, and the 2025 batch left with an average package of ₹19.22 lakh. For an applicant, the real work sits after the entrance score, not before it.

Overview

MICA is a private, autonomous management institute at Shela, on the western edge of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It was set up in 1991 by A. G. Krishnamurthy of Mudra Communications, per its Wikipedia entry; the acronym MICA originally stood for Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad, the name it carried for years before it became known simply as MICA. The first batch of its Post Graduate Diploma in Management in Communications was inaugurated in 1994, and that programme, the PGDM-C, is still the institute's flagship. MICA admits only graduates, so there is no undergraduate stream, and the flagship has always been a postgraduate diploma rather than a degree. It sits in the AISHE records as a standalone institution, not a university, which is why it awards the PGDM diploma and not an MBA.

Courses & Fees

MICA teaches through two schools. The School of Management houses the two-year PGDM-C, the two-year PGDM and the doctoral Fellow Programme in Management; the School of Applied Creativity runs two one-year postgraduate certificate programmes, per the institute's admissions page. The PGDM-C is built for brand, content and culture roles, while the PGDM leans into data, analytics and consulting, and the two share a common first year before splitting into second-year tracks, as set out in MICA's programme structure.

PGCM-DMMC (digital media)School of Applied CreativityOne year, residentialMICAT plus a programme test and interview₹13.3 lakh

The ₹28 lakh PGDM and PGDM-C fee is an all-inclusive figure for the two-year residential programme, per the admissions page; the two applied-creativity certificates are quoted at ₹13.3 lakh each. Applying costs a separate admission processing fee of ₹2,500 for a single programme, with an extra ₹500 for each additional programme, and that one fee already covers MICAT, per the programme structure. The doctoral Fellow Programme carries no fee at all: it comes with a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend.

Admissions

Getting into MICA runs through a five-stage process, and the exam is the smallest part of it. A candidate registers for MICAT, submits a CAT, XAT or GMAT score, sits MICAT itself, then clears a group exercise and personal interview before the final merit list is drawn, per the programme structure. At least one of CAT 2025, XAT 2026 or GMAT (2024 onwards) is mandatory, and MICA is explicit that it runs its own selection: the IIMs, XLRI and GMAC have no role in it.

ComponentWeight in the final merit score
CAT, XAT or GMAT35%
MICAT25%
Personal interview20%
Group exercise10%
Academic record across school and graduation5%
Extracurriculars and diversity5%

Put plainly, the entrance exam decides just 35% of the call; MICAT, the interview and the group exercise together weigh more, per the programme structure. MICAT is a computer-based test held twice a year, in December and February, at over 48 centres nationwide, and the better of a candidate's two attempts is counted. It has three parts: a psychometric section that acts as a qualifier, a descriptive section, and an aptitude section covering divergent and convergent thinking, verbal ability, quantitative ability with data interpretation, and general awareness. Eligibility is a bachelor's degree in any discipline recognised by the Association of Indian Universities, with at least 50% marks or the equivalent CGPA; final-year students may apply and join provisionally, on an undertaking to file their completion certificate and final marksheet by the institute's stated deadlines.

Cutoff

MICA does not publish a fixed percentile cutoff, and an applicant should not expect one. Its selection applies an undisclosed minimum cut-off on the CAT, XAT or GMAT score and separate sectional cut-offs inside MICAT, but the institute puts no public number on either, per its programme structure. It does note that because the PGDM emphasises analytics, the quantitative-ability and data-interpretation cut-off can run higher for PGDM applicants than for PGDM-C. The workable read is that the entrance score clears you into the process, and MICAT plus the interview then decide the seat.

Placements

For its 2025 batch, MICA's admissions page reports an average package of ₹19.22 lakh and a highest package of ₹40.91 lakh, and describes the batch as fully placed. The ₹40.91 lakh figure is the ceiling, not the norm; the ₹19.22 lakh average is far closer to what a typical graduate actually takes home.

Metric (2025 batch)Value
Average package₹19.22 lakh
Highest package₹40.91 lakh

MICA publishes batch-wise final-placement reports on its placements page, where the recruiter list, role mix and sector split for each year are laid out in full. Those documents are the primary source for who hires from MICA and into what functions, and they are worth reading before drawing conclusions from any single headline number.

Seat Matrix

MICA has not published a category-wise seat matrix on its public admission pages. The PGDM-C and PGDM are AICTE-approved programmes, so their sanctioned intake is fixed under that approval, and the binding seat count for a given year is the one in MICA's own admission notification and its AICTE approval rather than any third-party figure. Where a firm intake number matters to a decision, it should be confirmed against those official sources for the specific cycle.

Rankings

MICA enters the NIRF 2025 Management ranking at 33, on a composite score of 59.22. For a single-discipline communications school seeded against full-spectrum B-schools, what sits underneath that placement matters more than the placement itself.

NIRF 2025 parameterMICA's score
Teaching, Learning and Resources73.21
Research and Professional Practice43.32
Graduation Outcomes84.20
Outreach and Inclusivity70.37
Perception3.82

MICA's clear strength is what happens to its graduates: it scores 84.20 on graduation outcomes, its top parameter, backed by a solid 73.21 on teaching resources, per the NIRF 2025 Management ranking. Its soft spot is perception, at 3.82, the parameter that captures how employers and academic peers rate a school, and MICA's lowest by a wide margin. For a specialist marketing and communications institute up against general-management brands in the same table, that distance between strong outcomes and thin peer perception is the honest story behind the number 33.

Departments

MICA is organised into two schools rather than conventional departments, per its admissions page. The School of Management runs the PGDM-C, the PGDM and the Fellow Programme; the School of Applied Creativity runs the advertising-and-marketing-communication and digital-media certificate programmes. Inside the two flagship programmes, the second-year specialisation buckets are where students actually diverge, and the two lists reveal the institute's split personality.

ProgrammeSecond-year specialisation buckets
PGDM-CBrand management, sales and CRM, product management, campaign design, marketing technology and AI, data science and analytics, customer experience
PGDMBusiness analytics and consulting as a compulsory core, plus a functional minor and sector tracks such as FMCG, consumer tech, BFSI and fintech, and media and sports

The first year is common to both programmes and mixes management fundamentals with courses like semiotics, reading culture and AI for business decisions, per the programme structure. That blend of hard management with cultural and communication study is unusual in an Indian business school and is the through-line from MICA's advertising origins.

Facilities & Infrastructure

MICA runs a fully residential campus at Shela, on the western edge of Ahmedabad, and its main academic block was inaugurated in 1993, per its Wikipedia entry. The institute does not lay out a room-by-room facilities list on the admission pages we checked, so for current detail on its library, hostels and academic blocks, the official campus pages are the reliable source rather than any secondhand summary.

Hostel

The PGDM-C and PGDM are residential programmes, so students stay on campus through both years, and the room cost sits inside the single all-inclusive fee instead of being charged on its own. MICA does not publish a separate hostel tariff on its public admission pages, which is consistent with a fully bundled residential fee.

Faculty

MICA teaches through its two schools rather than a single published faculty roster, and it does not headline a professor count on its admission pages. Its current Director and CEO is Jaya Deshmukh, an alumna of MICA's first batch and the first woman to hold the post, per its Wikipedia entry. The teaching itself pairs management fundamentals with communication, semiotics and culture, which is uncommon for a business school and reflects the institute's roots in advertising and brand-building.
