Nitte Unversity, Mangalore
Nitte (Deemed to be University) sits 80th on the government's 2025 university table, and one of its constituent colleges sits 6th in the country. That gap is not a quirk of the tables. The deemed university was created out of a dental college at Deralakatte, on the southern edge of Mangaluru, and dentistry is still the discipline it does best. It also prints a full, programme-by-programme fee sheet before the cycle opens, so the cost of a seat here can be read rather than guessed.
Overview
Nitte is a private deemed-to-be university whose colleges grew out of the Nitte Education Trust, set up in 1979 by Justice K.S. Hegde, a Supreme Court judge and later Speaker of the Lok Sabha, to bring education and healthcare within reach of rural Dakshina Kannada. The trust now runs 36 institutions across three campuses, at Nitte, Mangaluru and Bengaluru, and the university's Mangaluru campuses cover 52 acres in the Deralakatte and Paneer areas, according to its account of its own establishment.
The order in which the colleges joined explains the shape of the place. A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, then affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, was conferred deemed-to-be-university status on 4 June 2008. K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences and Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy came under it the following year, and communication in 2012, science and research in 2013, architecture in 2015 and speech and hearing in 2021 followed, per that same establishment record. Medicine did not found this university; dentistry did.
The national assessor completed Nitte's second accreditation cycle in March 2021 and awarded an A+ grade with a CGPA of 3.40, and the B.Pharm programme at NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences carries a separate National Board of Accreditation approval, per the university's accreditation page.
Courses & Fees
Nitte prints its whole fee table in advance, split by category and by campus, which is the first reason to read the source instead of an aggregator's single total-fee line. The header of the 2026-27 general-category undergraduate schedule carries the three claims the university leads with: establishment under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, the A+ NAAC grade, and rank 80 in NIRF 2025. The first-year figures below are the totals from that sheet, tuition plus university fee plus examination fee, for the Mangaluru campus.
| Programme | College | Duration | First-year total, 2026-27 |
|---|---|---|---|
| MBBS | K.S. Hegde Medical Academy | 5.5 years | Rs 20,14,500 |
| BDS | A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences | 5 years | Rs 6,13,500 |
| PharmD | NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences | 6 years | Rs 3,16,500 |
| B.Pharm | NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences | 4 years | Rs 1,93,000 |
| BSc Nursing | Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences | 4 years | Rs 2,35,050 |
| BPT | Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy | 5 years | Rs 1,85,000 |
| B.ASLP | Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing | 4 years | Rs 2,75,300 |
| BSc (Honors) Biomedical Science | Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research | 4 years | Rs 1,62,500 |
| BA (Honors) Media and Communication | Nitte Institute of Communication | 4 years | Rs 1,10,500 |
An MBBS seat does not stop at the first year. The same sheet lists Rs 20,08,000 for each of years two, three and four and Rs 10,04,000 for the closing half-year, so the seat is paid for in five instalments, four of them at full size and the last at roughly half because the course runs 5.5 years rather than six.
The postgraduate sheet is where the pricing gets genuinely instructive. Inside one medical college, an MD in anatomy, physiology or biochemistry costs Rs 58,000 in the first year while an MD in radiodiagnosis, paediatrics or dermatology costs Rs 35,08,000, per the 2026-27 general-category postgraduate schedule. The teaching hours and the degree are equally recognised; what the price tracks is how many NEET-PG candidates chase that specialty.
| Programme | Duration | First-year total, 2026-27 |
|---|---|---|
| MD (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry) | 3 years | Rs 58,000 |
| MD (Pathology) | 3 years | Rs 13,08,000 |
| MD (General Medicine) | 3 years | Rs 30,08,000 |
| MD (Radiodiagnosis, Paediatrics, Dermatology) | 3 years | Rs 35,08,000 |
| MS (Orthopaedics) | 3 years | Rs 32,08,000 |
| MCh (Urology) | 3 years | Rs 25,08,000 |
| MDS (Orthodontics, Endodontics, Pedodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery) | 3 years | Rs 12,16,000 |
| MDS (Oral Pathology) | 3 years | Rs 2,16,000 |
| MPharm (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) | 2 years | Rs 1,47,000 |
| MSc Nursing | 2 years | Rs 1,13,000 |
Fee concessions exist here, but only away from the clinical seats. Nitte Institute of Architecture charges tuition of Rs 1,85,000 a year to a candidate with more than 90% in physics, chemistry and mathematics against Rs 2,35,000 in the 80 to 85% band, and sets aside twenty Excellence Scholarship places at tuition of Rs 90,000 a year, offered first come first served to candidates who clear that marks bar and hold a NATA score of 90 or more, best of three attempts, per the scholarships page. What the phrase "first attempt" governs at Nitte is renewal, not entry: the concession carries into later years only if the student clears each semester examination at the first attempt, on that same page. On the engineering side, 20% of the seats in each branch are held for the toppers of NUCAT, the university's own entrance test, and those candidates are offered 20 to 40% off the prescribed fee, per the NMAMIT admission terms. No equivalent concession is published for MBBS or BDS.
Admissions
Nitte runs two separate doors, and which one you use is decided by the college, not by the university. K.S. Hegde Medical Academy states the medical position bluntly on its MBBS admission page: the National Testing Agency's job ends at the rank, the Directorate General of Health Services hands 100% of deemed-university seats to the Medical Counselling Committee, and a candidate registers there and locks a choice list. Nothing about that sequence happens at Deralakatte. The engineering and computing programmes sit on the opposite arrangement, with the university setting and marking its own entrance.
For MBBS the qualifying bar is a Class 12 pass with 50% in physics, chemistry and biology or biotechnology with English as a language of study, and 17 years of age as on 31 December of the admission year, with NEET-UG qualification a prerequisite rather than a preference, per that same MBBS page. A.B. Shetty applies the same bar for BDS and states plainly that both its management and its NRI seats are allotted on inter-se merit in NEET-UG, per its BDS admission page. The NRI route changes the pool you compete in, not whether you sat the exam. Nitte's NRI candidates are also asked to establish the sponsor relationship in the form set out by the Supreme Court in the CODEUNIK matter, W.P.(c) No. 689/2017, according to that page.
| Programme | Campus | Entry route |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS, BDS | Mangaluru, Deralakatte | NEET-UG, allotted by the Medical Counselling Committee |
| B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA | Nitte in Karkala taluk | NUCAT, the Nitte University Common Admission Test |
| B.Sc (Honors) | Nitte in Karkala taluk | Karnataka Examinations Authority allotment |
| MBA | Nitte in Karkala taluk | CAT, MAT, KMAT, XAT or ATMA score |
Three details in that table trip people up. A B.Tech candidate who has passed Class 12 outside India, or whose parent or blood relative holds NRI status, is admitted on marks in the optional subjects rather than through NUCAT at all. The B.Sc (Honors) seats left unfilled after the state authority's allotment revert to the college to fill directly. And the MBA sits outside NUCAT entirely, reading the national management tests instead, per the NMAMIT admission terms.
Cutoff
Asking Nitte for its closing rank is asking the wrong office. Deralakatte sets no line at all: allotment runs down inter-se NEET-UG merit inside the deemed-university pool until the 250 MBBS places at K.S. Hegde Medical Academy and the 100 BDS places at A.B. Shetty are taken, and the rank that fills the last of them becomes the cutoff after the fact. What exists to read is therefore the round-wise allotment record and the seat matrix behind it, both issued by the Medical Counselling Committee. Anything else circulating as a Nitte cutoff is somebody's reconstruction of those two files.
Engineering at the Nitte campus publishes no cutoff either, but the mechanism is different enough to be worth knowing before you sit the paper. NUCAT produces the merit list the university admits from, and 20% of the seats in each branch go to its toppers with 20 to 40% off the fee attached, per the admission terms. A high NUCAT rank buys a discount here, not only a seat, which is not something a high NEET rank does for you at Deralakatte.
Placements
No headline placement percentage is published for Nitte, and the rows below are what stands in its place. The ranking return sorts the 2023-24 exit cohort by how long the degree runs rather than by what it is, so a pharmacy graduate and a medical graduate land in different rows and neither row is labelled with the course, per its NIRF 2025 data submission.
| Programme band | Graduated | Placed | Median salary | Went to higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, 4-year | 298 | 184 | Rs 1,88,000 | 34 |
| Undergraduate, 5-year | 175 | 137 | Rs 1,46,000 | 24 |
| Undergraduate, 6-year | 143 | 104 | Rs 4,35,000 | 22 |
| Postgraduate, 2-year | 530 | 435 | Rs 2,56,000 | 5 |
| Postgraduate, 3-year | 155 | 140 | Rs 5,60,000 | 2 |
| Postgraduate, 6-year | 30 | 29 | Rs 2,66,000 | 0 |
The postgraduate three-year band reports the strongest median at Rs 5,60,000 and near-total placement, 140 of 155, per that submission. The undergraduate rows need a different reading. A house surgeon in her internship year is neither placed nor in higher studies by the framework's definitions, so the columns quietly undercount exactly the students a health-sciences university produces most of, and a thin placement figure in those rows is a measurement artefact rather than a verdict on the college.
Two constituent colleges file their own returns and the picture sharpens. A.B. Shetty's 2023-24 BDS batch had 93 graduates, of whom 64 were placed at a median of Rs 3,00,000 and 29 moved to higher studies, while all 48 of its MDS graduates were placed at a median of Rs 3,80,000, per its dental submission. At NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 76 of 101 B.Pharm graduates were placed at a median of Rs 2,75,000, per its pharmacy submission.
Seat Matrix
Nitte files its sanctioned intake by how long a programme runs, not by what it teaches, so the university-level return has to be decoded against the college list before it says anything useful.
| Band | Sanctioned seats, 2023-24 | Same band, 2021-22 |
|---|---|---|
| UG, 4 years | 2,438 | 388 |
| UG, 5 years | 200 | 200 |
| UG, 6 years | 250 | 150 |
| PG, 2 years | 720 | not entered |
| PG, 3 years | 185 | 185 |
| PG, 6 years | 30 | 30 |
Two of those bands moved and a third is new. The four-year band went from 388 seats to 2,438 in two years and the six-year band, which is where MBBS sits, from 150 to 250, while the five-year band holding BDS and BPT stayed at 200 throughout and the two-year postgraduate band, 720 seats now, was not entered at all for 2021-22, per that same submission. Clinical capacity here grew once, in one band; the rest of the expansion happened away from the hospital.
Programme-level counts come from the colleges that file separately, and from the two admission pages that print an intake. K.S. Hegde Medical Academy states an MBBS intake of 250 on its admission page. A.B. Shetty is approved for 100 BDS and 49 MDS seats, per its dental submission. NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences is approved for 100 B.Pharm, 90 M.Pharm and 30 PharmD seats, per its pharmacy submission. At the Nitte campus, NMAMIT lists an M.Tech intake of 139 across its specialisations and 180 MCA seats, per its admission page.
A sanctioned intake is not the number of seats open to you. For MBBS and BDS the split into general, management and NRI quotas is set out in the seat matrix the Medical Counselling Committee publishes for the round you are entering, and it is reissued every cycle, so an intake filed for 2023-24 and the seats you can actually compete for this year are different figures.
Rankings
Nitte carries four separate NIRF 2025 results, and collapsing them into a single "Nitte rank" is the commonest mistake made about the place. Its dental college, A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, is 6th in dentistry at 69.00; the parent university is 80th with 49.26; NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences is 51st in pharmacy at 52.60; and NMAM Institute of Technology sits in the 151 to 200 band, on the university's own NIRF page.
| NIRF 2025 university parameter | Nitte score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 69.91 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 21.81 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 62.75 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 60.02 |
| Perception | 31.95 |
Two columns account for almost the whole distance between 80th and 6th. On graduation outcomes the 2025 dental table puts A.B. Shetty at 96.84, and on perception, the measure of how academics and employers rate a place, at 84.06. Against those, the university table gives Nitte 62.75 for graduation outcomes and 31.95 for perception. Reputation, in other words, attaches to the dental college by name and has not transferred to the parent institution. Research is the weak column on both sheets, 32.18 for the college on the dental table and 21.81 for the university on the university one, and that is the limit of any ranking-led case for the place.
Departments
Teaching happens inside named colleges rather than generic departments, and the campus each one sits on decides the admission route, the fee sheet and the town you will live in.
| College | Campus | Main programmes |
|---|---|---|
| K.S. Hegde Medical Academy | Mangaluru, Deralakatte | MBBS, MD, MS, MCh |
| A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences | Mangaluru | BDS, MDS |
| NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences | Mangaluru | B.Pharm, PharmD, M.Pharm |
| Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences | Mangaluru | BSc Nursing |
| Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy | Mangaluru | BPT |
| Nitte Institute of Allied Health Sciences | Mangaluru | Anaesthesia and operation-theatre, radiology and imaging, laboratory science, respiratory, dialysis and radiation-therapy technology, MPH, MHA |
| Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing | Mangaluru | B.ASLP |
| Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research | Mangaluru | BSc (Honors) Biomedical Science |
| Nitte Institute of Communication | Mangaluru | BA (Honors) Media and Communication |
| Nitte Institute of Architecture | Mangaluru | BArch |
| NMAM Institute of Technology | Nitte, Karkala taluk | B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA |
| Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management | Nitte, Karkala taluk | MBA |
| Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology | Bengaluru | B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA |
Choose the college first; the university is the awarding body behind it. A candidate weighing B.Tech against BDS under the Nitte name is choosing between two towns, two entrance exams and two fee sheets that share nothing but a letterhead.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The asset that does the teaching here is a hospital. Clinical training for the medical academy runs at the 1200-bed, NABH-accredited Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital, per KSHEMA's MBBS page, and the hospital's clinical laboratories hold a separate NABL accreditation, per the university's accreditation page. For a dental applicant the equivalent measure is chair time, and A.B. Shetty recorded an average outpatient attendance of 825 in the 2023 calendar year in its NIRF 2025 submission.
The library system is the other part that can be checked rather than admired. Across the constituent colleges it holds 51,000 square feet of carpet area, computer centres with 150 workstations on a 1 Gbps connection, and DELNET membership for inter-library loans, with a published policy that opens the collections to readers from outside the university, per the library page. That last item is unusual, and it is consistent with a trust founded to serve the district it sits in.
Hostel
Hostel charges are printed on the same kind of published sheet as tuition, which means the residential cost can be added to the fee before you accept a seat instead of after. For the medical and dental colleges a double room with attached bath comes to Rs 1,22,000 in the first year, made up of a Rs 20,000 caution deposit, Rs 52,000 of mess charges and Rs 50,000 of room rent, rising to Rs 2,02,000 for an air-conditioned double and Rs 2,72,000 for the single suites kept for postgraduates, per the 2026-27 hostel fee structure. Nursing and allied-health students start lower, at Rs 1,07,000 for a triple room with common bath on the same sheet.
The terms matter as much as the figure. The caution deposit comes back only at the end of the course, later years' room rent is collected with the college fee, and the mess runs vegetarian on a cost-sharing basis, with non-vegetarian dishes pre-booked through Nitte's Paaka-shale app, per the university's hostel page. Rooms are allotted at admission and cannot be changed or vacated mid-year without written permission, so the room type you accept on the day you join is the one you live in all year.
Faculty
Nitte entered 795 faculty members in its NIRF 2025 submission, a count weighted towards practising clinicians because the medical and dental staff carry hospital duty alongside teaching. The two colleges that file separately give the figure at the level that matters to an applicant: 107 at A.B. Shetty, per its dental submission, and 64 at NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, per its pharmacy submission.
Research supervision is the part a postgraduate should read closely, and its shape here is unusual. Part-time doctoral candidates outnumber full-time ones, 324 against 174, while 23 full-time doctorates were awarded in 2023-24 and 62 sponsored projects ran that year across 26 funding agencies, in the same submission. That is the profile of clinicians researching around hospital duty rather than of a full-time research campus, and it is the honest explanation for the weakest of Nitte's five ranking columns.
Notable Alumni
The name most attached to Nitte belongs to its founder rather than a graduate. Justice K.S. Hegde set up the Nitte Education Trust in 1979, and the medical academy and the teaching hospital both carry his name, per the university's establishment record. He founded the institution; he did not study at it, and the two facts are often run together on listing sites.
Named graduates are a different question. Nitte publishes no public, checkable alumni roll of its own, and a doctor or dentist named only on a listing site is a claim, not a record, so no names appear here. To confirm a particular Nitte degree, write to the college that awarded it: A.B. Shetty, K.S. Hegde and NGSM each hold their own register.
News & Articles
What decides Nitte's clinical intake this cycle is a counselling calendar, not a campus announcement. The Medical Counselling Committee has issued the final Round 1 result of its 2026 undergraduate counselling, the Round 2 schedule and the Round 1 seat matrix covering MBBS, BDS and BSc Nursing, all on the MCC undergraduate counselling page. The MBBS and BDS places at Deralakatte are filled out of those files and out of nothing the university itself publishes.
Nitte's own notices, including the data it submits to the ranking framework each year, are posted by its internal quality-assurance cell on the university's NIRF page. A figure that has moved since the last cycle will surface there before it reaches any listing site.
College Compare
For a Mangaluru shortlist the comparison that decides a dental application is between colleges in the same city, and Nitte leads it. A.B. Shetty is 6th nationally at 69.00, ahead of Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore at 11th with 62.43 and Yenepoya Dental College at 31st with 55.00, all three on the same 2025 dental table and all three within one city.
At university level the order reverses, and sharply. The same 2025 university table that places Nitte 80th with 49.26 puts Manipal Academy of Higher Education 3rd with 69.25 and JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, at Mysuru, 21st with 60.00. Nitte loses to both Karnataka rivals on the general list and beats Manipal's Mangaluru dental college on the dental one. Which table applies to you is decided by what you are actually enrolling in: a BDS applicant should read the dental ranking and a doctoral applicant the university ranking, and the two point opposite ways here.
