Bharathidasan Institute Of Management

Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu Est. 1984 Official site Updated
NIRF Management
#96

Bharathidasan Institute of Management sits at rank 96 with a score of 45.36 on the NIRF 2025 management ranking, and the five parameters behind that number pull hard in opposite directions. Its research and professional practice score, 1.06, is the lowest recorded by any institution on that table. Its graduation outcomes score, 81.45, lands in the upper half of the same hundred, and its perception score of 33.51 sits in the top quarter. Those figures describe a teaching school inside the BHEL township at Tiruchirappalli that places its graduates well and publishes almost no research.

Overview

BIM is a School of Excellence of Bharathidasan University, which is a specific legal status rather than a loose description. Its about page sets out the four conditions that define it: a separate Board of Governors, a separate legal entity registered under the Societies Registration Act, sponsorship by the university, and affiliation to it in that capacity, for post-graduate study and research. The Governor of Tamil Nadu is Patron in Chief. The degree at the end is the university's rather than the institute's, and BIM's own academic guidelines spell out the mechanism: the institute recommends Bharathidasan University to award the MBA to qualifying students, and the university fixes the graduation event and the certificate fee. Admissions, fee-setting and day-to-day governance stay inside BIM.

Where the campus sits follows from that status. BIM was set up in 1984 inside BHEL's Tiruchirappalli complex, on what its about page calls the same analogy as a medical college attached to a hospital, so that management students would sit next to a working heavy-engineering plant. The admission brochure records that Bharat Ratna C. Subramaniam chaired the first Board of Governors and that V. Krishnamurthy, a former chairman of BHEL, was one of the critical actors in bringing BHEL into it. The address is worth fixing early: BIM teaches from the MHD site inside the BHEL complex at Tiruchirappalli 620014, not from the Palkalaiperur or Khajamalai campuses where the university runs its own departments.

A purpose-built campus is being raised at Kalamavur, along the Tiruchirappalli to Pudukottai highway, and the institute's news archive carries an item dated 31 January 2026 saying BIM is on track to inaugurate it and induct a fresh batch of 180 students. That is well above the approved intake of 120 in the current ranking filing, so an applicant should establish with the admissions office which campus and which intake their cohort belongs to before signing anything.

Courses & Fees

BIM awards an MBA, not a PGDM, and it runs exactly one full-time degree. Its admissions page sets out one two-year residential MBA, taken with a specialisation in Marketing, in Finance, in Operations and Supply Chain Management, in Human Resource Management, or in Digital Business and Analytics. Alongside it, per the about page, the institute conducts the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Fellowship Programme and short PG certifications in ERP with SAP, in public policy and management, and in digital HR and analytics.

The fee is published as a full two-year ladder in the admission brochure, head by head.

Two lines sit outside that table, and only one of them is optional. The same brochure adds mess charges of Rs 75,000 a year on actuals, and prices the optional items separately: a PG certificate in SAP at Rs 2,36,000, and a summer school at the University of Sussex or an exchange term at Rennes School of Business or the University of Texas at Arlington at Rs 5,00,000. Adding two years of mess to the published fee puts the unavoidable spend a little over twenty lakh rupees. One small saving is written into the same document: the recognition fee is waived for graduates of Bharathidasan University itself.

Admissions

BIM shortlists on a CAT 2025 score, an XAT 2026 score, or a GMAT score taken between January 2024 and January 2026, and asks for a bachelor's or master's degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks from a recognised university, per its admissions page. Final-year candidates can apply, with admission provisional until they produce that proof, and the deadline for it appears twice on BIM's site in two forms: June 2026 on the admissions page, 31 July 2026 in the brochure. Holders of ACA, ACWA or ACS qualifications are also eligible to apply.

The application is online only, at Rs 1,500, or Rs 1,000 for SC, SCA and ST candidates, and the institute states plainly that the amount is neither refunded nor transferred to another candidate.

The closing date is published two ways as well, and the site does not say whether the two describe the same milestone. The important-dates page closes the admission window on 15 February 2026, while the admissions FAQ makes 31 January 2026, 10.00 pm, the last date to submit the form. Work to the earlier and confirm the current one with admissions@bim.edu.

After the shortlist, the seat is decided by a group discussion and a personal interview, and the brochure is explicit that class 10 marks, class 12 marks, degree marks and relevant work experience are verified and weighted at that second stage. Reservation follows Government of Tamil Nadu norms, there is no NRI quota and no age limit, and work experience is preferred rather than required, per the FAQ. The batch profile bears that last point out: 65% of the students who entered in 2025 were freshers.

Cutoff

BIM publishes no qualifying percentile, and its two accounts of how the shortlist is drawn do not agree with each other. The brochure says candidates reach the second stage on their entrance-exam score; the important-dates page says the shortlist is drawn on academic performance and the CAT, XAT or GMAT score together. Neither version leaves a line on a scaled score that a candidate can measure themselves against, so a figure circulating as a BIM Trichy cutoff did not come from the institute.

The batch that did get in is documented, though, and it is the closer substitute. The student profile for batches 42 and 43 records a 2025 intake of 117 students, of whom 41% came from engineering, 33% from commerce, 16% from science, 5% from arts and 5% from other backgrounds. A commerce or arts graduate is not the exception in this classroom, which is a more useful signal than a percentile would be.

Placements

BIM has its placement data audited by CRISIL against the Indian Placement Reporting Standard, and its placements page carries three such audits, for the batches that left in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The 2021-23 audit is the most recent of them and the one place where a BIM salary figure has been checked by someone other than BIM.

Mean total fixed salaryRs 9,59,272
Median total fixed salaryRs 9,70,347
Median maximum earning potentialRs 11,43,650

The fixed-salary rows are the ones to sit with, because the headline lakh figures above them are drawn from a wider measure. Across the offers CRISIL verified, the median fixed yearly cash component was Rs 9,70,347 while the median maximum earning potential was Rs 11,43,650, the second figure folding in one-time payments, performance-linked pay and other components. The difference between them is the slice of a headline package a graduate does not draw as certain monthly pay. The same report puts information technology at 47% of accepted offers and BFSI at 30%, with consumer goods and manufacturing taking seven accepted offers each out of ninety and consulting six, so an applicant expecting a manufacturing-heavy outcome from a campus inside BHEL should read that split closely.

The ranking filing extends the record over three cohorts, and the one cohort it shares with the audit does not match it.

2021-22, batch 2020-22115114Rs 9,50,000
2022-23, batch 2021-23113110Rs 11,98,000
2023-24, batch 2022-24118112Rs 10,00,000

For the 2021-23 batch the filing records 113 graduating, 110 placed and a median of Rs 11,98,000, where the audit counts 108 who sought placement through the institute, none unplaced, and a median fixed salary of Rs 9,70,347 across the 90 offer documents CRISIL was given to check. The definitions differ, and the distance between them is roughly the distance between what an offer letter says and what a graduate banks.

One caution on the headline package. BIM's own documents do not agree on the highest offer made to Batch 40: the admissions FAQ and the admission brochure both give Rs 35.26 lakh, while the student profile for batches 42 and 43 gives Rs 20.13 lakh for the same cohort. A single top offer says little about a batch of that size in any case, and where BIM's own documents contradict each other the audited median is the one figure that has survived an outside check. The brochure's top recruiting partners page names Accenture, Asian Paints, Axis Bank, Barclays, Bosch Global Software, CRISIL, Dalmia Cement, Deloitte, Ford, Godrej and Boyce, HDFC Bank, Infosys, o9 Solutions, Schneider Electric, Tiger Analytics and Wipro against the roles each hired for, and the recruiting companies list runs to 113 names against no year at all, Ashok Leyland, TAFE and the Reserve Bank of India among them.

Seat Matrix

BIM has one sanctioned-intake line to report because it runs one degree. BIM's ranking filing puts the approved intake for the two-year postgraduate programme at 120 seats for 2023-24 and 120 for 2022-23, with no earlier years reported.

Measure, 2023-24Count

Male students152
Female students88
From within Tamil Nadu209
From outside the state31
From outside India0
Socially challenged, SC plus ST plus OBC181
Receiving full tuition-fee reimbursement0

The state mix and the reimbursement count are the two rows that change what a BIM applicant should expect. Only 31 of 240 students came from outside Tamil Nadu in the year filed, so the classroom is regionally concentrated, which BIM's own FAQ concedes: more than 15 states are represented, but about 60% of a batch may come from five southern states. And the count receiving full tuition-fee reimbursement from state, central, institutional or private sources is zero, which is the filed counterpart of the institute's flat statement that it offers no scholarship of its own.

Rankings

BIM's only entry in NIRF 2025 is on the Management table, and by its own policy NIRF is the only ranking it enters anywhere. The brochure states that the institute does not participate in rankings run by private agencies or publications and submits only to NIRF, on the ground that the underlying data there is open to public audit. The consequence for anyone comparing schools is that NIRF is the only ranked position BIM will stand behind, so a league-table placement quoted for it anywhere else was not one the institute took part in.

Overall score, rank 9645.36
Teaching, learning and resources68.04
Research and professional practice1.06
Graduation outcomes81.45
Outreach and inclusivity49.94
Perception33.51

Read down that column and BIM splits in two. Research drags the composite to the bottom of the table; graduation outcomes and perception, the two parameters a recruiter and an alumnus actually feel, stand far higher. Among the Tamil Nadu institutions on that ranking BIM finishes last on the composite, yet its graduation outcomes score is bettered only by IIM Tiruchirappalli's. A candidate choosing on placement record and a candidate choosing on academic depth will read the same row very differently.

Departments

BIM publishes no department list. Its faculty page sorts everyone who teaches into five areas instead: finance, economics and general management; marketing; operations and supply chain management; organisational behaviour and human resources; and digital business and analytics. Three of the five name an area chair, finance, marketing and digital business and analytics; operations and supply chain names none; and organisational behaviour and human resources carries exactly one regular member, listed as PGP Chair, with the rest of the area shown as visiting faculty.

The centres of excellence are where BIM has put its capital spending. FINTRAC, the financial trading and analytics centre, runs 12 Bloomberg terminals and the NSE SMART trading simulation, and prepares students for the Bloomberg, CMT, CFA and FRM certifications. The Real-Time Contextual Marketing Lab is built around Salesforce Social Studio and a set of analytics tools. The Centre for Operations Excellence is built on o9 Solutions and INCHAINGE simulation software, the qBotica lab teaches robotic process automation on the qBotica platform, and the Centre for Sustainable Development picks a few of the seventeen UN goals to work on each year, all per the brochure; the admissions page adds an artificial intelligence and machine learning lab and a Centre for Design Thinking, Innovation and Entrepreneurship to the same list. The ranking filing records Rs 2,32,67,279 spent on laboratory setup and upgradation in 2023-24 alone.

Research output is the thin part of the record and the filing does not disguise it. BIM reported no sponsored research projects in 2023-24, 15 projects worth Rs 29,60,000 in 2022-23, two consultancy projects in each of the last three years, and no Ph.D. students on roll, full time or part time. The brochure states that the institute is in the process of restarting its Ph.D. programme in management sciences. Where BIM is busier is executive education: the same filing records 10 management development programmes in 2023-24 with 235 participants, against six the year before.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The teaching campus occupies the MHD site inside the BHEL complex, and what BIM files about it is equipment and access rather than acreage. Kalamavur may change that. For now the accessibility answers in the filing stop short of the whole site: lifts or ramps are recorded in more than 80% of the buildings and specially designed toilets in more than 80% of them, while walking aids, wheelchairs and transport from one block to another are recorded without qualification. Which buildings fall in the remainder is not stated.

Sport is graded at BIM. The brochure states that every student must take up at least one of football, cricket, volleyball, badminton or basketball to a stated level of proficiency and must join at least one club, and that academic credits are earned for both. Student-run committees carry a surprising amount of the operational load: Catalyst, the systems committee, runs the computer centre, the wired and wireless networks and the firewall and network security, and MESSCOM handles mess purchase, menu design and quality checks.

Library spending is modest and falling. The filing records Rs 13,35,995 on books, journals and e-resources in 2023-24, against Rs 30,34,740 the year before and Rs 32,71,735 the year before that.

Hostel

Residence is compulsory. The admissions FAQ states that the MBA is a two-year full-time residential programme and that all students must live on campus, so hostel cost is not an optional line in the budget. The brochure charges accommodation at Rs 53,800 in each year of the programme inside the main fee, with a one-time mess deposit of Rs 7,000 and mess charges of Rs 75,000 a year billed on actuals.

Accommodation is a 2BHK flat shared by four students, per the FAQ, not a room on a corridor. Food is run by MESSCOM, a student committee drawn from both years, which sets a menu spanning north and south Indian cooking and handles purchase and quality. The hostel warden's office has its own address at N3/47, Nehru Nagar, inside the BHEL complex and separate from the academic campus, per the contact page, and that is where accommodation queries go.

Faculty

BIM entered 18 faculty members in its NIRF 2025 filing, a small regular faculty for an intake of this size, and the institute closes the gap with a visiting bench. Its faculty page lists regular members alongside a substantial visiting and adjunct roster across all five areas, plus resource faculty attached to the management development programmes. Dr. Asit Kumar Barma is Director and a professor, listed under both the marketing and the digital business and analytics areas.

The brochure claims the average faculty tenure is among the highest of India's private B-schools, which is the institute's own assertion rather than a filed statistic. What can be checked is the payroll: the filing puts salaries for teaching and non-teaching staff at Rs 6,24,60,856 in 2023-24, up from Rs 5,40,40,197 the previous year. The published lists do not separate teaching loads, so how much of the core coursework a resident member carries is not readable from them.

Notable Alumni

BIM's own count of its alumni is not settled: the about page says more than 4,500, so does the institute profile inside the 2026 student profile, and that document's opening page says more than 5,000. Its senior names cluster in finance, technology sales and consumer goods.

News & Articles

The press archive is dated and unglossed, and its entries are the fastest way to see what has actually changed at BIM. The most consequential recent item, dated 31 January 2026, reports BIM on track to inaugurate its new campus and induct a fresh batch of 180 students. Ten entries dated 29 October 2025 cover the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's address on the campus, and three dated 26 November 2025 record wins in the Capsim business simulation challenge and international honours.

On the institutional side the brochure records a cooperation agreement with the University of Texas at Arlington signed on 29 May 2025, covering dual-degree routes in a STEM MBA in technology, management and innovation, in business analytics and in information systems, an MoU with the Global Sustainable Futures Network in the United Kingdom on 1 July 2025 for a five-year sustainable development collaboration, and the Rennes School of Business agreement of 6 January 2023.

College Compare

Comparison is awkward for BIM because its nearest neighbours by postcode are nothing like it by type. Three institutions from Tiruchirappalli appear on the NIRF 2025 management table: Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli, National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, and BIM itself, a society-run school of excellence with a single MBA and 120 approved seats.

National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli5752.4745.9971.6119.88
Bharathidasan Institute of Management9645.361.0681.4533.51

On the composite BIM finishes 96th to the NIT's 57th, but on graduation outcomes the order flips, 81.45 against 71.61, and on perception it flips again, 33.51 against 19.88. The one column where the gap is not arguable is research: 1.06 for BIM against 45.99 for the NIT and 35.02 for the IIM. That single parameter is what an applicant choosing BIM over either neighbour is trading away, and it is the reason the table locates BIM in its city rather than shortlisting it against them.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

BIM publishes no NAAC grade anywhere on its site. The recognitions it does list run through AICTE and the NBA, which is the usual route for a standalone management institute rather than a college graded by NAAC.

BodyStatus
AICTEApproved, extension of approval reports published annually since 2011-12
NBAMBA accredited, term published as 2024-2027

AACSBEducational membership received 14 October 2023, accreditation stated as in progress
SAQS and BGAMember of the South Asian Quality Standard and the Business Graduates Association

Read the AACSB line carefully. Educational membership is a paid affiliation, not accreditation, and the brochure is careful to say BIM is working towards the accreditation rather than holding it. The NBA accreditation is the substantive one for an Indian MBA, and the term the brochure publishes runs 2024 to 2027, which expires midway through the 2026-28 batch's two years, so an entrant should ask the institute where the renewal stands.

Aid

Scholarships

Its admissions FAQ states that the institute does not offer any scholarships to its students, and the ranking filing agrees in the only way that matters: no student receiving full tuition-fee reimbursement from state or central government, from the institution, or from private bodies. A family therefore funds the whole of the Rs 9,32,012 first year and Rs 9,38,833 second year out of its own resources or a loan.

What BIM does arrange is credit. The same FAQ names State Bank of India, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India and Union Bank of India as the banks it arranges education loans through, subject to each bank's own norms, and the fee page of the brochure prints the same four against a Scholar Loan Scheme it describes as available without collateral. The FAQ also sets out the PM-Vidyalaxmi central sector scheme approved by the Union Cabinet on 6 November 2024, under which loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh carry a 75% credit guarantee and students from families earning up to Rs 8 lakh a year get a 3% interest subvention on loans up to Rs 10 lakh. The same page notes the scheme reaches students admitted to a list of 860 quality higher education institutions, so confirm with the bank that BIM is on it before counting on the subvention.

Voices

Student Reviews

No student reviews appear here, because nothing about BIM's two years is published by anyone who can be identified and checked. Every BIM student lives on campus and the clubs, the mess and the systems committee are all student-run, so the people who can answer what the two years are actually like are reachable through the institute's alumni relations and public relations committees.
