Symbiosis International (deemed University), Pune

Pune, Maharashtra Est. 2002 Official site Updated
NIRF Engineering
#46

Symbiosis International (Deemed University), Pune runs its own admission tests, and that one fact shapes every application to it. A seat in any of its institutes is won through a Symbiosis paper, the Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET) for undergraduates or the Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP) for the MBA, and neither JEE, CLAT nor CAT opens a door here. In NIRF 2025 the university placed 40th overall and 24th among universities, and it carries a NAAC A++ grade. First, though, fix which Symbiosis this is: the Pune deemed-to-be university at siu.edu.in, not the separately run Symbiosis Skills and Professional University, and not the Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences in Indore.

Overview

Symbiosis started as a single institute more than fifty years ago, and today it is a system rather than a college. The Pune deemed university, often called Symbiosis International University, gathers more than forty constituent institutes across nine faculties, Law, Management, Computer Studies, Medical and Health Sciences, Media and Communication, Humanities and Social Sciences, Engineering, Design and Education, and runs them on campuses spread across Pune together with Bengaluru, Noida, Nashik, Hyderabad, Nagpur and one in Dubai. Within Pune the teaching is split between hill campuses at Lavale and Hinjewadi and city sites at Senapati Bapat Road, Model Colony, Viman Nagar and Kirkee. It holds the University Grants Commission's Category-I autonomy and a NAAC A++ accreditation awarded to the university as a whole, not to any single institute inside it.

For an applicant the structure has one practical consequence. Because every institute sits under one deemed university, there is no common Maharashtra CET pool or central counselling seat here; the university sets its own test, its own fee and its own selection round for each programme. That also makes the name a common trap. The Symbiosis Skills and Professional University in Pune and, in Madhya Pradesh, the Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences at Indore are legally separate universities with their own approvals and rankings, so a fee or a cutoff quoted for either does not apply to the Pune institution described here.

Courses & Fees

The university awards degrees at every level, from bachelor's programmes through master's, doctoral and diploma courses, spread across its nine faculties. The entrance test, not the degree, is what a candidate picks first, because each family of programmes carries its own Symbiosis paper.

Programme familyEntrance testWhere the seats sit

Undergraduate engineering (B.Tech)SITEEESymbiosis Institute of Technology
Integrated law (LLB)SLATSymbiosis Law School, Pune
MBA and PG managementSNAPSIBM Pune, SCMHRD, SIIB, SIOM

There is no single Symbiosis fee, because each institute prices its own programme, and the gap between a two-year residential MBA and a three-year bachelor's degree is wide. The full schedules sit in the university's undergraduate prospectus, its postgraduate prospectus and each institute's admission page. As one reference point, the most searched of them, the flagship two-year MBA at SIBM Pune carries an academic fee near 6,55,000 for each of its twice-yearly installments in the current batch, and the law, design and undergraduate programmes each land well below that.

Admissions

Admission is a two-part gate at every Symbiosis institute: clear the relevant Symbiosis test, then convert a shortlist in the institute's own selection round. The undergraduate route runs on SET, a one-hour computer-based paper of objective questions with no negative marking that feeds the non-engineering bachelor's institutes; engineering applicants sit SITEEE for the Symbiosis Institute of Technology, and law applicants sit the Symbiosis Law Admission Test for Symbiosis Law School. The MBA runs on SNAP, the aptitude test every Symbiosis management institute shares. None of these scores travels beyond Symbiosis, and no outside national test is accepted in their place.

A test score only earns a call. Each institute then runs its own written test, group exercise and personal interaction, holds it on the campus the programme belongs to, and weighs it alongside the test percentile before a seat is offered. Because one SET or SNAP result is read by several institutes at once, a score strong enough for the top institutes is scarcer than the raw percentile suggests, and a candidate effectively competes twice, once for the shortlist and again in the room.

Cutoff

There is no single cutoff for the university, and Symbiosis does not publish a percentile line that clears a seat everywhere. Each institute calls candidates from the top of the SET or SNAP percentile order it receives, and the percentile that converts differs sharply between the flagship institutes and the newer campuses. The most sought institutes, SIBM Pune on the SNAP side and Symbiosis Law School on the SLAT side, call the highest percentiles in their groups, while a regional campus running the same programme clears lower.

The only binding figure is the one an institute publishes with its own shortlist each year. The number that decides your case is the one your target institute prints for your category when that shortlist goes up, and it is worth chasing that page rather than any headline Symbiosis percentile, because no such headline exists.

Placements

Symbiosis does not publish one consolidated placement report for the whole university; each institute reports its own, and the outcomes diverge by faculty. The management institutes release detailed annual recruitment reports, and SIBM Pune's is the strongest of them; the media, law, computer studies and engineering institutes each run separate placement cells, and undergraduate programmes report differently again from the two-year MBAs.

A placement average quoted loosely for Symbiosis as a whole is close to meaningless, because it blends a top-ranked MBA batch with unrelated undergraduate cohorts. For a real number, open the recruitment report of the specific institute and programme, which each management and professional school posts on its own official site.

Seat Matrix

Intake is fixed institute by institute, at the sanctioned strength each programme carries, and there is no master seat table for the university. Because SET, SITEEE, SLAT and SNAP are the university's own papers, seats are filled inside Symbiosis and not through any state or central counselling round, which is why no outside authority prints a category-wise matrix for one of its institutes.

Because Symbiosis is a deemed university, it defines its own reservation categories instead of drawing from a state or central quota, and those categories are not applied uniformly across its institutes. An applicant reads the current split off the notification a given institute puts out when it opens admissions, since no consolidated Symbiosis quota chart is kept anywhere.

Rankings

The deemed university's own NIRF standing is solid rather than spectacular, and it reads best against its parts. In NIRF 2025 Symbiosis International placed 40th overall and, on the same submission, 24th among universities; its engineering entry sat 46th.

NIRF 2025 categoryRankScore
Overall4056.86
University2459.16
Engineering4656.22

Symbiosis owes those ranks to a lopsided score profile that turns up in every table it enters. On the university table it posts a teaching-learning-and-resources score of 73.49 and a graduation-outcomes score of 72.97, both strong, while its research-and-professional-practice score of 38.34 trails them, the profile of a teaching-led private university still building research depth. The gap between its overall composite of 56.86 and its university composite of 59.16 comes almost entirely from perception, which the overall table scores at 23.19.

Two of its institutes rank far above the university line in their own categories. Symbiosis Law School, Pune placed 7th in law and SIBM Pune 11th in management in NIRF 2025, which is why the Symbiosis name carries more weight in law and management than its all-disciplines rank alone would signal.

Departments

The university is organised as faculties, each holding a cluster of named institutes rather than conventional departments. The nine faculties, with a leading institute named in each, give the clearest map of what Symbiosis actually teaches:

  • Management, led by SIBM Pune, with SCMHRD, SIIB and SIOM alongside it
  • Law, led by Symbiosis Law School, Pune
  • Computer Studies, led by the Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research
  • Engineering, led by the Symbiosis Institute of Technology
  • Media and Communication, led by the Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication
  • Medical and Health Sciences, led by the Symbiosis Medical College for Women and the university's own hospital at Lavale
  • Humanities and Social Sciences, led by the Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts and the Symbiosis School of Economics
  • Design, led by the Symbiosis Institute of Design
  • Education, covering the university's teacher-education and allied programmes

Facilities & Infrastructure

Because Symbiosis is spread across many campuses, its facilities are best judged campus by campus rather than as one figure. The hill campus at Lavale, on the western edge of Pune, is the largest and most self-contained, a residential site that houses several institutes, their libraries, hostels, sports grounds and the university's own teaching hospital for the health-science programmes. The city campuses at Senapati Bapat Road and Model Colony are older and more compact, and the newer sites at Hinjewadi, Viman Nagar and outside Pune carry the institutes based there.

Every campus runs its own library and laboratories sized to the programmes it teaches, so the practical question for a visitor is which institute's campus to see rather than a single university address.

Hostel

Residence is arranged per institute, and for the fully residential programmes such as the MBA it is built into the fee rather than offered as an option. On the Lavale campus most institutes provide on-campus hostels with mess, and the charge appears in each programme's own fee schedule alongside tuition, so the room type, sharing and annual cost differ from one institute to the next.

A candidate should read the hostel line in the specific institute's fee document rather than expect a single university-wide hostel rate, which Symbiosis does not set.

Faculty

Faculty strength is one of the university's stronger measured inputs. Its teaching-learning-and-resources score of 73.49 on the NIRF 2025 university table, the parameter that captures faculty numbers, qualifications and the student-teacher ratio among other things, sits well above its research score. Teaching is organised inside each institute rather than in one central department, so the professors a student actually learns from belong to the institute they join, and the detailed faculty roster for any programme lives on that institute's own pages rather than in a single university-wide count.

Notable Alumni

We could not point to a single verified, independently traceable roll of notable Symbiosis alumni that speaks for the university as a whole, and because graduates are spread across dozens of institutes and decades, any list assembled from aggregator sites without a citation would be guesswork. Rather than repeat unverified names, this stays empty until a primary source supports it. A specific Symbiosis graduate is best traced through the institute that awarded the degree, whether that is SIBM, the law school or SICSR, since each keeps its own alumni records rather than feeding one central roll.

News & Articles

Announcements are posted institute by institute rather than in one central feed. Admission notifications, SET and SNAP dates, results and event notices go up on siu.edu.in, the set-test.org and snaptest.org portals, and the individual institute sites. When a SET or SNAP date moves or a result drops, the test portal carries it first; when a fee or an intake changes, the institute's own page does. Either one beats a coaching-site summary whenever a deadline is attached.

College Compare

Set against the other large private universities an applicant weighs, Amity, Manipal, VIT and Christ among them, Symbiosis is distinguished by its test system more than by any single campus. Three things separate these systems in practice: the entrance route, which for Symbiosis means a SET or SNAP score that no other university reads; the fee, set programme by programme by the university rather than by a state regulator; and the standing of the specific institute rather than the umbrella brand, since a Symbiosis law or management seat ranks very differently from an average one.

Line those three up against a rival's published figures for the exact programme you want, and the comparison becomes concrete rather than a contest of brand names.

Contact & Location

The university's administrative base is in central Pune, while most teaching sits on the Lavale campus to its west.
