Kalasalingam Academy Of Research And Education
Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, known to most applicants as KARE, is a private deemed-to-be university in Krishnankoil in southern Tamil Nadu that the government's NIRF 2025 university ranking places 28th in the country. Because it is a deemed university rather than a state or central one, the practical questions a candidate asks work differently here: KARE runs its own entrance test, prints its own fee table, and allots its own seats, so no outside counselling authority sets a closing rank for it. Every fee, waiver, rank and placement figure on this page comes from KARE's own admission portal or the data it filed with the NIRF for 2025, linked at the point it appears so you can open the primary document yourself.
Overview
KARE began in 1984 as Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering, set up by the Kalasalingam Anandam Ammal Charities, and became a deemed-to-be university when that status was granted in 2006, as its documented history records. It took its present name in November 2017, after the University Grants Commission asked deemed universities to drop the word "University" from their titles. Its formal charter is the one printed across the top of its own homepage: a deemed-to-be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, based at Anand Nagar in Krishnankoil, roughly 65 km south of Madurai.
Engineering is still the centre of gravity, and the reason most searches reach the campus, but the university has grown well past a single college. It teaches science, agriculture, architecture, law, commerce and management alongside its engineering schools, all under one deemed-university umbrella. The homepage records that it is re-accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council at an A++ grade, with several engineering programmes accredited by the National Board of Accreditation under the Washington Accord. That research-forward framing is deliberate: the word "Research" in the name maps to a real doctoral base, covered in the faculty section below.
Courses & Fees
KARE sets and publishes its own fee schedule, which is unusual enough to be worth reading closely, because a deemed university is not bound to a state fee-regulator's single number. Its 2026-27 fee structure prices B.Tech by branch, so the same degree costs very different amounts depending on the specialisation, with computer science the most expensive and the remaining branches the cheapest.
| Programme | Annual tuition fee | Miscellaneous fee (annual) |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech, CSE / AI & Data Science / IT | Rs 1,95,000 | Rs 12,000 |
| B.Tech, ECE / Biotechnology | Rs 1,60,000 | Rs 12,000 |
| B.Tech, all other branches | Rs 1,00,000 | Rs 12,000 |
| MBA / MCA | Rs 1,50,000 | Rs 12,000 |
| M.Tech / M.Arch | Rs 70,000 | Rs 12,000 |
The sticker price is only half the story, because KARE cuts it heavily on merit, and the discount is tied to a JEE Main rank rather than to need. A candidate entering computer science on a strong JEE rank can pay a fraction of that Rs 1,95,000, and the taper is set out branch by branch on the admission page.
| JEE Main rank band | CSE & AI/DS waiver | IT & ECE waiver | Other B.Tech waiver |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 25,000 | 100% | 100% | 100% |
| 25,001 to 50,000 | 70% | 100% | 100% |
| 50,001 to 1,00,000 | 60% | 70% | 75% |
| 1,00,001 to 2,00,000 | 40% | 40% | 50% |
There are parallel waivers for strong Class 12 science marks and a Rs 12,500 monthly stipend for GATE-qualified M.Tech students, per the same admission page. The scholarship is fixed at admission and holds for the full course, so the net figure a family should budget is the tuition above minus whatever band the candidate's rank lands in, not the headline fee.
Admissions
Admission to KARE's B.Tech programmes runs through the university's own entrance test, the Kalasalingam University Engineering Entrance Examination, or KUEE, and the university also admits on a valid JEE Main score. There is no shared state counselling round: candidates are shortlisted on their KUEE marks, and KARE publishes its own merit list after counselling. The undergraduate eligibility is a pass in the Higher Secondary (Plus Two) examination with an aggregate of 50 percent in physics, chemistry and mathematics or biology, as the admission page sets out. Students who took mathematics can apply to any branch, while those who took biology are limited to biotechnology and food technology, and diploma holders enter the second year through lateral entry.
Applications are made online, and the admission page notes that a candidate may register for more than one course at a time through the university's apply portal. Because the whole process is internal to KARE, the timeline, the counselling and the seat reservation all move on the university's own schedule rather than a central authority's, so the admission page is the one calendar to track.
Cutoff
There is no published cutoff rank for KARE, and expecting one misreads how a deemed university admits. Seats are filled on KUEE merit and qualifying Plus Two marks rather than through JoSAA or a state common entrance test, so no counselling authority releases an opening or closing rank for the campus. Any single "KARE cutoff" quoted on a listing site is therefore a guess rather than an official figure.
The one rank that genuinely matters here is a JEE Main rank, and it decides money rather than entry. KARE ties its merit scholarships to that rank, so a stronger JEE position lowers the fee instead of clearing an admission bar: the top band earns a full tuition waiver and the discount tapers down the ranks, exactly as the scholarship table above shows. Aim for the best JEE rank you can for the fee relief, and treat the KUEE and the qualifying marks as the actual gate.
Placements
KARE reports its graduate outcomes to the government every year, and those figures are more disciplined than the single highest-package number a brochure leads with. In its NIRF 2025 engineering data submission the university recorded a median salary of Rs 6,10,000 for the B.Tech batch that graduated in 2023-24, with 1,359 of 1,476 graduates placed and 52 more moving into higher studies. The three most recent cohorts hold close to that mark.
| B.Tech cohort (graduating year) | Graduated | Placed | Median salary | Higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 1,220 | 1,147 | Rs 5,50,000 | 55 |
| 2022-23 | 1,278 | 1,219 | Rs 6,75,000 | 50 |
| 2023-24 | 1,476 | 1,359 | Rs 6,10,000 | 52 |
Its two-year M.Tech programmes place a smaller cohort at a higher median: 100 of the 104 who graduated in 2023-24 were placed, at a median of Rs 6,60,000, in that same submission. KARE's own placement cell advertises larger and undated totals across every programme: a highest package of 50 LPA from Nutanix, an average of 4.5 LPA, and more than 2,827 offers from over 179 companies out of a pool of 800 or more recruiters. Read those as cumulative recruiting figures rather than one graduating year's result, and weigh the dated NIRF median against them when you compare KARE with another campus.
Seat Matrix
KARE does not fill seats through JoSAA, a state common entrance test or any central counselling body, so there is no public seat-matrix notification with category-wise opening and closing ranks. It admits directly against its own sanctioned intake, which is large and weighted heavily toward its four-year engineering degrees. Its NIRF 2025 data submission lists the following approved intake for 2023-24.
| Programme type | Sanctioned intake, 2023-24 |
|---|---|
| UG, four-year programmes | 2,583 |
| UG, three-year programmes | 485 |
| UG, five-year programmes | 70 |
| PG, two-year programmes | 288 |
Within engineering alone, the engineering submission shows a four-year UG intake of 1,803 and a two-year PG intake of 108 for the same year. The branch-wise and category-wise split of these seats, and any revision for the current cycle, is decided by KARE at admission time rather than published as a counselling seat matrix, so confirm the live intake for your branch on the university's admission portal before you plan around it.
Rankings
KARE's standing is strongest when it is read as a university rather than only an engineering college. On the government's 2025 framework it is placed 28th among universities with a score of 58.37, and its five parameter scores show a campus that is well ahead on graduation outcomes and outreach and weaker on peer perception.
| NIRF 2025 university parameter | KARE score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 70.43 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 36.39 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 74.68 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 76.54 |
| Perception | 37.29 |
The same framework places KARE 33rd among engineering institutions with a score of 59.03, and 48th on the wider overall list at 55.68. The pattern across all three tables is consistent: outreach and graduation outcomes carry the score, while perception, the parameter that rewards a long national reputation, is where a young private university in a small town sits lowest. A candidate should read that as an honestly rising campus rather than an established brand.
Departments
KARE organises its teaching into schools rather than a single engineering faculty, and the spread is wider than its engineering rank alone suggests. Its programmes list runs B.Tech across aeronautical, automobile, mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical and electronics, electronics and communication, biomedical, biotechnology, food technology, agricultural, information technology and computer science engineering, with the computer science line split into specialisations in artificial intelligence, data science, cyber security and software product engineering.
Around that engineering core sit the other schools: science and humanities degrees in physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, forensic science, visual communication and English; B.Sc honours in agriculture and horticulture; architecture at both B.Arch and M.Arch; a law school running the integrated B.A.-LL.B and B.Com-LL.B; and a management wing with BBA, B.Com, MBA and MCA. The postgraduate engineering menu leans practical, with M.Tech options in structural, manufacturing, VLSI design, renewable energy and industrial safety engineering.
Facilities & Infrastructure
KARE runs a residential campus of 200 acres at Krishnankoil, laid out along the Madurai to Shenkottai national highway, with hostels, a central and departmental library system and engineering workshops on site, as its profile describes. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled, and the library holds print volumes and journals alongside digital resources.
The research infrastructure is where a self-styled academy of research has to prove itself, and KARE's laboratories are funded on the scale of a working engineering university rather than a teaching-only college. Its NIRF submissions record active spending on new laboratory equipment, engineering workshops and library resources each year, which is consistent with the doctoral output the faculty section describes. For a prospective undergraduate the useful check is the specific department's labs for the branch you are joining, since a campus this broad is still experienced one school at a time.
Hostel
Faculty
KARE entered 709 faculty members in its NIRF 2025 data submission, of whom 489 sit within its engineering schools, per the engineering submission. Behind that teaching strength is a substantial doctoral programme: the same university submission counts 582 full-time and 236 part-time PhD scholars pursuing research to 2023-24. That research base is the honest justification for the "Research and Education" in the name, and it is the part of KARE least visible to a student choosing on rank or fee. What matters at the point of admission is the depth of faculty in the single department you are joining, which each school lists on its own pages.
