JSS Academy Of Higher Education & Research
JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research is a private deemed-to-be university in Mysuru whose two pharmacy colleges rank 4th and 7th in the country, above the 21st place it holds on the wider NIRF 2025 university list. That gap is the whole point of reading the institution carefully: JSS AHER is a cluster of health-sciences colleges, not a general campus, and what a candidate pays, sits and competes for depends entirely on whether they are aiming at medicine, dentistry or pharmacy. Its MBBS and BDS seats are filled on a NEET rank, never on a single test the university sets for everyone, so the numbers below are pulled college by college from the government's ranking data and JSS AHER's own pages.
Overview
The university runs under JSS Mahavidyapeetha, the education trust of the Suttur mutt, and was granted deemed-to-be-university status in 2008 under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, according to its official profile. It still carries its founding identity in its formal papers as Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara University, the name most older documents and search results use. The University Grants Commission placed it in Category-I in 2018, and it is accredited by NAAC at A+ grade with a CGPA of 3.47, as the same profile records.
What sits under that charter is narrow and deliberate. The academic core is JSS Medical College, JSS Dental College and Hospital, and JSS College of Pharmacy, which runs on the Mysuru campus and at a second campus in Ootacamund across the border in Tamil Nadu, alongside faculties for biomedical and life sciences, public health, health-system management and yoga. There is no large engineering or general-arts wing here, which is why the single university rank tells a student less than the standing of the specific college they want.
Courses & Fees
JSS AHER teaches almost entirely inside the health professions, and each of its colleges admits and prices its own degrees. The undergraduate spine is MBBS at JSS Medical College and BDS at JSS Dental College, with B.Pharm and the six-year Pharm.D at the pharmacy colleges, and three-year and four-year science degrees across the biomedical and life-sciences faculties. Above them sit the clinical postgraduate seats: MD, MS and diploma courses in medicine, MDS in dentistry, M.Pharm and Pharm.D post-baccalaureate in pharmacy, and the DM and MCh super-specialties. The table maps the main programmes to how a candidate enters them.
| Programme | College or faculty | Level | Entry route |
|---|---|---|---|
| MBBS | JSS Medical College | Undergraduate | NEET-UG rank |
| BDS | JSS Dental College and Hospital | Undergraduate | NEET-UG rank |
| B.Pharm, Pharm.D | JSS College of Pharmacy (Mysuru, Ooty) | Undergraduate | Pharmacy qualifying route, not NEET |
| B.Sc, M.Sc life and biomedical sciences | Faculty of Life Sciences | Under and postgraduate | Own qualifying route |
| MD, MS, PG Diploma | JSS Medical College | Postgraduate | NEET-PG rank |
| MDS | JSS Dental College and Hospital | Postgraduate | NEET-MDS rank |
| DM, MCh | JSS Medical College | Super-specialty | NEET-SS rank |
Fees are not one figure and they are not stable. As a self-financing deemed university, JSS AHER sets a separate charge for each course and revises it every admission cycle, publishing the current amounts as course-specific notifications, listed on its admissions page for 2026 as MBBS Admission Fee Guidelines and BDS Admission Fee Guidelines. Because a medical seat costs many times what a science or allied-health seat does, and because deemed-university medical fees carry different bands for the government, management and NRI quotas, the only binding number is the one in the notification for your exact course and quota. Read it off the current JSS AHER admissions page rather than from any aggregator's single "total fee" line.
Admissions
There is no unified JSS entrance exam, and that is the single most misunderstood point about getting in. The university states plainly that admission to its MBBS, BDS, MD, MS, MDS, DM and MCh courses is made on the rank secured in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, as its admissions page sets out. For the undergraduate medical and dental seats that means a NEET-UG rank, taken through counselling: the all-India deemed and central quota run by the Medical Counselling Committee, and the Karnataka state quota run by the Karnataka Examinations Authority, whose 2026 MBBS seat-allotment notices for JSS appear on the university's own notifications list. The postgraduate clinical seats run on NEET-PG, NEET-MDS and NEET-SS in the same way.
The pharmacy, life-sciences, allied-health and management programmes sit outside NEET entirely and admit through their own qualifying routes and the university's application portal. So a family reading the JSS name should first fix which college they are applying to, because the exam, the counselling body and the timeline all change with it.
Cutoff
JSS AHER does not publish a fixed cutoff, because its medical and dental seats close at whatever NEET rank the counselling rounds settle on, and that shifts every year and every quota. An MBBS seat filled through the all-India deemed quota closes at a different NEET rank from the same seat in the Karnataka state quota, and both move again for reserved categories and for the NRI and management bands. There is no single "JSS cutoff" that holds across them.
The dependable reference is therefore the round-by-round seat-allotment result for the current cycle, published by the Medical Counselling Committee for the deemed quota and by the Karnataka Examinations Authority for the state seats. Read a previous year's closing rank as a rough gauge of your chances, never as a mark JSS AHER guarantees will hold.
Placements
Placement at JSS AHER means something different in each college. An MBBS graduate heads for a compulsory internship and a NEET-PG seat, a dentist into practice or an MDS, and a pharmacy or science graduate into the drug industry or a research lab, so one placement figure would blur three unrelated paths. In its NIRF 2025 data submission the university reported the following outcomes for its most recent graduating cohort, the batch that finished in 2023-24.
| Programme band | Graduated | Placed | Median salary | Higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UG medical and dental (5-year) | 300 | 175 | Rs 13,75,000 | 125 |
| UG three-year programmes | 600 | 310 | Rs 9,80,000 | 290 |
| UG four-year programmes | 220 | 101 | Rs 9,80,000 | 119 |
| PG two-year programmes | 690 | 381 | Rs 10,75,500 | 309 |
| PG three-year clinical | 200 | 184 | Rs 19,10,000 | 16 |
| Integrated six-year programme | 60 | 57 | Rs 11,75,000 | 3 |
Two patterns stand out. Its clinical postgraduate seats, the MD, MS and MDS courses, report the highest median at Rs 19,10,000 and are placed almost in full, 184 of 200. Its undergraduate science graduates divide almost evenly between a job and further study: in the three-year band 310 were placed and 290 went on to study, and in the four-year band more chose study than work, 119 against 101 placed, per that same submission. For medicine and dentistry the placement line understates the real path anyway: JSS Medical College's own submission records an MBBS median of Rs 13,25,000 for its 2022-23 batch, but most graduates move into a compulsory internship and then compete for a postgraduate seat through NEET-PG rather than take a campus offer.
Seat Matrix
Each JSS college carries its own sanctioned intake, and the two undergraduate professional gates are deliberately small. JSS Medical College is approved for 250 MBBS seats a year, raised from the 200 it held through 2021-22, and JSS Dental College and Hospital holds 100 BDS seats.
The postgraduate clinical intake is larger than most single colleges: JSS Medical College is sanctioned 161 MD, MS and diploma seats and JSS Dental College 34 MDS seats. Across the whole university, its NIRF 2025 submission lists a sanctioned intake of 600 in three-year undergraduate programmes, 220 in four-year, 350 in five-year, 690 in two-year postgraduate programmes, 200 in three-year postgraduate and 60 in its six-year integrated programme. The category-wise split within each of those, and any change for the 2026 intake, is fixed only in the counselling authority's seat-matrix notification for the cycle.
Rankings
On the government's 2025 framework JSS AHER is placed 21st among universities with a score of 60.00, and 38th on the overall list at 57.43. The five parameters behind that score are uneven for JSS AHER: strong on teaching resources and outreach, weaker on research output and peer perception.
| NIRF 2025 university parameter | JSS AHER score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 76.72 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 35.68 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 71.51 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 79.49 |
| Perception | 40.25 |
The real strength is not visible in that single university number but in the discipline tables, where JSS AHER's colleges rank far higher than 21. JSS College of Pharmacy at Ootacamund is 4th in pharmacy with a score of 76.14 and its Mysuru pharmacy college is 7th at 73.38, JSS Dental College and Hospital is 10th in dentistry at 62.59, and JSS Medical College is 37th in medicine at 55.51. A student weighing the university should read the table for the profession they want, because pharmacy and dentistry here sit well inside the national top ten.
Departments
The teaching happens inside named colleges rather than generic departments, and the map is compact. The university profile groups its work under the faculties of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, life sciences and management, delivered mainly through three colleges.
| College or faculty | What it runs |
|---|---|
| JSS Medical College | MBBS, MD, MS, PG diplomas, DM and MCh super-specialties, and a school of public health |
| JSS Dental College and Hospital | BDS and MDS |
| JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru and Ootacamund | B.Pharm, Pharm.D, M.Pharm and doctoral pharmacy research |
| Faculty of Life Sciences | Biomedical and life-sciences degrees, water and health, and health-system management studies |
For a prospective student the useful unit of choice is the college, since the campus, the clinical training and the entrance route all belong to it rather than to the university as a whole.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The anchor of the campus is JSS Hospital, the large teaching hospital where the medical, dental and allied-health students train on real cases, which is what a health-sciences university runs on rather than lecture blocks alone.
Research is a real part of the institution rather than a line on a brochure. Its NIRF 2025 submission reports 155 sponsored research projects running in 2023-24, funded by 68 agencies, alongside 217 consultancy projects. That base is concentrated in the health and pharmaceutical sciences rather than spread thin across many fields, which is a large part of why the pharmacy colleges rank where they do.
Hostel
Faculty
JSS AHER entered 767 faculty members in its NIRF 2025 data submission. Because the university is built around JSS Hospital, that count leans toward practising clinicians and pharmaceutical scientists, not the arts-and-sciences lecturers a general university would list. The doctoral programme is sizeable for a specialised university: the same submission counts 721 full-time and 79 part-time PhD scholars, with 114 full-time doctorates awarded in 2023-24. What matters to an applicant is how deep the faculty runs in the single department they are joining, a figure each JSS college posts on its own pages.
