Thapar Institute Of Engineering And Technology, Patiala

Patiala, Punjab Est. 1956 Official site Updated
NIRF Engineering
#29

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology fills half of its first-year B.E./B.Tech seats on JEE Main rank and the other half on class 12 board marks in physics, mathematics and one science subject. That split is the single most important thing to understand before you apply, because it means a strong board result can matter as much here as a JEE Main score, and it separates Thapar from the private universities that run their own captive entrance test. What follows is the JEE Main admission mix, the real 2024-25 fee, the branch-wise seat matrix, and where TIET lands in the government's NIRF 2025 tables.

Overview

Thapar, known on its own campus as TIET and for years called Thapar University, is a private deemed-to-be-university in Patiala, Punjab, and one of the older private technical institutions in the country, set up in 1956. Deemed-university status is what lets it design its own degrees and run its own admission rather than draw students from a state counselling pool, and it is why the rules below are Thapar's rules, not Punjab's.

Its Patiala campus spans about 250 acres and teaches more than 13,000 students, which puts it among the larger single-campus engineering schools in north India. It holds an A++ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, the country's higher-education quality regulator.

The institute began and is still weighted toward engineering, but it now runs management, sciences and liberal-arts schools alongside its engineering departments, so a student is choosing a mid-sized technical university rather than a standalone engineering college. Its national standing is discussed in the Rankings section below.

Courses & Fees

The largest programme here by far is the four-year B.E./B.Tech, offered across roughly fifteen branches from Computer Engineering to Mechatronics, with postgraduate M.E./M.Tech, an MBA through the LM Thapar School of Management, MSc, MA, MCA and PhD programmes layered above it.

Fees at Thapar are set per branch and rise in bands, with the computing branches costing the most. For students admitted in 2024-25 the institute's own fee schedule fixes the numbers below, on top of a one-time admission fee.

B.E./B.Tech branch groupFee per semester (Rs)Full 8-semester fee (Rs)
Computer Engineering, CSE, CS and Business Systems, Electronics and Computer2,97,50023,80,000
Biotechnology, ECE, Electrical and Computer, Electronics (VLSI), Robotics and AI2,70,00021,60,000
All other B.E./B.Tech branches2,27,50018,20,000

Two things soften the sticker price for some students. The one-time admission fee is 30,000 rupees, paid once at entry rather than every year. And for the non-computing branches, Biomedical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Instrumentation and Control, Mechanical and Mechatronics, Thapar waives 30% of tuition for a class 12 PCM score of 80% or more, and 20% for a PCM score above 75%, held as long as the student keeps an AGPA of 8.5. The waiver does not apply to the computing branches, which is part of why those cost the most.

Admissions

Admission to the first year of B.E./B.Tech runs through two parallel channels, and a single application form puts a candidate into both. Half of the seats are filled on the All India Rank of JEE Main and the other half on class 12 marks in physics, mathematics and one further science subject. The board-merit channel still requires the candidate to have appeared in JEE Main, so sitting the exam is effectively mandatory even for the applicant relying on school marks.

The eligibility floors differ between the two channels. The JEE Main channel needs at least 60% in the three qualifying subjects, relaxed to 55% for SC and ST candidates, while the board-merit channel needs 70%, relaxed to 65%. Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering add a further NEET-based route for students from a physics-chemistry-biology background.

There is no general private-university entrance test standing in for JEE Main here. Thapar does hold its own campus test, but only for candidates who did not appear in JEE Main at all, and only for a restricted list of non-computing branches, so for almost every applicant the JEE Main score and the board result are the two numbers that decide the seat.

Cutoff

Because admission runs on two tracks, the closing bar is really two numbers, not one. In the JEE Main channel a branch closes at a JEE Main All India Rank; in the board channel it closes at a class 12 PCM percentage. Thapar publishes these round by round on its admission portal as counselling proceeds, rather than as a single fixed rank released before the season.

Computer Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering are consistently the tightest to enter and close at the strongest ranks and percentages, with the electronics branches next and the core branches such as Civil, Chemical and Mechanical opening the widest. We could not find an official, stable closing-rank table to reproduce here without risking a stale number, so the reliable figure is the branch-wise closing rank in the current year's counselling result on the official admission portal. Treat any single rank quoted on a third-party page as indicative until you match it against that notification.

Placements

Thapar's campus recruitment is run centrally and its headline outcome is strong: the institute reports a highest placement package of 1.23 crore rupees. That is a single standout offer, typically to a computing-branch graduate, and it tells you the ceiling of the recruiting the campus attracts rather than what a median student earns.

The number that would matter more to most applicants, a verified average or median salary across the graduating batch, is not published by the institute in a stable, primary form, and the averages that circulate on aggregator sites disagree with one another by wide margins. A more honest read comes from two sources that are genuinely accountable: the recruiter list Thapar's placement cell publishes for the current season, and the graduation-outcomes score that feeds its NIRF engineering rank. Either tells you more than treating a single ceiling figure as the typical result.

Seat Matrix

Thapar's B.E./B.Tech intake is large and heavily weighted toward computing. The institute's official first-year admission document lists a total of 2,715 undergraduate seats, split evenly at 1,358 in the JEE Main channel and 1,357 in the board-merit channel. The branch-wise breakdown below shows where those seats sit.

BranchTotal seats
Computer Engineering960
Computer Science and Engineering (Patiala)240
Electronics and Communication Engineering240
Electronics and Computer Engineering276
Mechanical Engineering180
Computer Science and Engineering (Derabassi)120
Biotechnology90

Two reservations shape who competes for these seats. Half of the seats are held for candidates who passed their qualifying examination in Punjab, and 2% are reserved for graded sportspersons from the state. The counts above are subject to AICTE approval and are revised each admission cycle, so confirm the current-year matrix against the live admission document before you rely on a specific branch total.

Rankings

Thapar's rankings profile is that of a solid engineering university whose research is still the lighter leg. In NIRF 2025 it is placed 44th on the overall list and 26th among universities, with its engineering programmes ranked 29th.

NIRF 2025 categoryRankScore
Overall4456.21
University2658.87
Engineering2960.97
Management4654.40
Research4247.59

The useful pattern in that table is that the engineering rank sits ahead of the research rank. Thapar is 29th in engineering but 42nd in research, and 46th in management, which marks it as a teaching-strong engineering university whose research output and management school are still climbing toward its core engineering standing. For a branch decision, the engineering rank is the one that speaks to what most applicants are buying.

Departments

Thapar's teaching is organised into engineering departments and a set of standalone schools. The engineering side runs Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and the newer degrees such as Electronics (VLSI Design), Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Science and Business Systems sit within them.

Around that engineering core, the institute runs the LM Thapar School of Management on its Derabassi campus, the Thapar School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and a Thapar School of Advanced AI and Data Science, which is why the university is ranked separately in management as well as engineering. For the full, current department and school list, the academics section of the official website is the authoritative source.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Thapar runs from one gated site on Bhadson Road rather than a set of buildings dotted around Patiala, so the departments, the central library, the hostel blocks and the sports grounds all share a single perimeter that a first-year student rarely needs to leave during the week. The institute describes a 250-acre campus with research facilities and wi-fi enabled smart classrooms, and that scale is one practical reason most students live in rather than commute.

What the institute does not put out is a dated, line-by-line list of those facilities that an outside page could copy without it going stale, so the dependable place to check a specific laboratory, the library's current holdings or a named research centre is Thapar's own academics and campus pages, read at the time you apply.

Hostel

Most Thapar students live in the campus hostels, so anyone coming from outside Patiala has to budget the hostel and mess bill as a cost in its own right, on top of whichever tuition band their branch sits in. Hostel fees run from about 32,600 to 75,000 rupees per semester depending on the block and room type, with the mess charged separately at 24,000 rupees per semester on the Patiala campus. Room type, whether single or shared and air-conditioned or not, is what moves the figure within that band, and the allocation is made programme-wise and year-wise subject to availability. Confirm the charge for your room category on the official fee schedule before planning the year's cost.

Faculty

Teaching at Thapar is split across the engineering departments and the separate management, sciences and liberal-arts schools, each with its own faculty. No institute-wide headcount or student-teacher ratio is posted in a form worth quoting, and NIRF rolls faculty strength into its teaching-and-resources parameter instead of reporting it on its own. The dependable roster for any one subject is that department's staff page on the official site.

Notable Alumni

Thapar has graduated engineers across seven decades who have gone into technology, industry and public life, but a verified, independently documented roll of distinguished alumni is not something we can reproduce here from a single reliable source. Naming individuals is only honest when each name is traceable to a checkable record, so this section stays empty rather than carrying names lifted from unverified lists.

News & Articles

Thapar posts its admission notices, JEE Main and board-merit counselling dates, fee revisions and result updates on its official website and admission portal rather than into one syndicated feed. For anything time-sensitive, such as a shifted counselling window or a revised fee schedule, the official page is where it appears first and where the binding version lives.

College Compare

The clearest way to place Thapar against its private peers is the exam a candidate already has to sit. Vellore Institute of Technology, SRM and Chandigarh University each admit through their own captive entrance test, so applying adds another exam to the calendar; Thapar admits on JEE Main and on board marks, so a JEE Main aspirant can add it without preparing for anything new. Against public options in the region such as Punjab Engineering College or NIT Jalandhar, the trade is Thapar's private fee and its larger computing intake against a government fee and a national counselling seat. Compare on the specific branch you want, lining up its NIRF standing, its Thapar fee band and the closing rank you can realistically reach, rather than on the overall name.
