Sant Longowal Institute Of Engg. & Tech., Longowal
For 2026-27 SLIET put 481 B.E. seats into JEE Main counselling and opened another 422 in the second year of the same degree, 227 of them held for students already inside the institute. Both figures come from the institute's own SET-2026 information brochure. Almost as many people start this degree in year two as in year one, and that single fact reshapes the fee table, the entrance tests, the hostel allotment and the placement record that follow.
Overview
SLIET exists because of a peace agreement. The institute was set up in 1989 under the Rajiv Gandhi-Longowal accord, is fully funded by the Ministry of Education as a Centrally Funded Technical Institute, and took Deemed-to-be-University status in 2007 under notification F.9-42/2001-U.3 (SET-2026 information brochure). It awards its own certificates, diplomas and degrees rather than affiliating to a state university.
What makes the place unusual is not its funding but its shape. The Training and Placement department puts it in a single sentence: engineering graduates here "spend 3 years after their diploma, 4 years after 10+2, and 6 years after matriculation" before they leave with a B.E. (SLIET Training and Placement). Three entry doors, one degree at the end, and the shortest of them starts with a Class 10 marksheet.
The student body that results is a national one sitting in rural Sangrur. Of 1,932 undergraduates on roll in the institute's NIRF return, 188 came from inside Punjab and 1,744 from outside it (NIRF 2025 engineering data return). The campus itself covers 451 acres (SLIET annual report 2022-23), and the Ministry of Education placed it 79th in the NIRF 2025 engineering table and 90th among universities in the same year.
Courses & Fees
Eight programme levels run here, and the institute lists them in ascending order: Integrated Certificate-Diploma, B.E., Integrated M.Tech, Integrated M.Sc., M.Sc., MBA, M.Tech and Ph.D. (SLIET academic structure). Nine B.E. branches admit students, from computer science and artificial intelligence and data science through to food technology and civil engineering (SET-2026 information brochure).
The fee schedule is published per programme and per semester rather than as a four-year total, so the two columns below are what a family actually writes cheques against. The first is everything payable when the seat is taken, which folds in refundable caution money and the one-off admission charges; the second is what falls due each semester after that.
| Programme | Payable at admission | Each later semester |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated Certificate-Diploma | Rs 20,500 | Rs 9,500 |
| B.E. and Integrated M.Tech | Rs 55,000 | Rs 33,000 |
| Integrated M.Sc. | Rs 24,100 | Rs 11,100 |
| M.Tech and MBA | Rs 41,000 | Rs 22,000 |
| M.Sc. | Rs 38,000 | Rs 19,000 |
| Ph.D., full time | Rs 23,500 | Rs 8,800 |
Inside the B.E. figure, tuition is Rs 26,200 a semester and the rest is a development fee of Rs 3,300 and other charges of Rs 3,500. The Rs 55,000 opening payment carries a refundable caution deposit of Rs 5,000 and Rs 17,000 of one-time charges, made up of Rs 2,300 admission-related fee, Rs 10,400 students activity fee, Rs 2,300 library fee and a Rs 2,000 alumni fee, and a counselling fee of Rs 1,500 is charged on top of all of it (SLIET fee structure).
The certificate and diploma rung is priced for a different family altogether. Tuition on the Integrated Certificate-Diploma is Rs 6,400 a semester against Rs 26,200 on the B.E., and the whole first payment is Rs 20,500 (SLIET fee structure). A student who enters at Class 10, spends three years on the diploma and then wins a vertical-entry seat pays the lower rate for those three years and the degree rate only for the last three.
Admissions
Everything here turns on which door you use, and the institute keeps the doors apart with its own entrance test written in eight labelled versions, SET-I through SET-VII plus a SET-IA for lateral entry to the diploma. The academic structure page sets the routes out programme by programme, and the SET-2026 brochure gives each one a paper and a date.
| Programme | Route |
|---|---|
| Integrated Certificate-Diploma, year 1 | SET-I |
| Integrated Certificate-Diploma, year 2 lateral | SET-IA |
| B.E. and Integrated M.Tech, year 1 | JEE Main, then JoSAA and CSAB |
| B.E. and Integrated M.Tech, lateral | SET-III |
| Integrated M.Sc. | Half the seats through JoSAA and CSAB on JEE Main; the other half on JEE Main, PUCET (UG), CUCET (UG), NEET or SET-II |
| M.Sc. | JAM through CCMN; institute-level seats on JAM, PUCET (PG), CUCET (PG) or SET-VI |
| M.Tech | GATE through CCMT; GATE or SET-VII for anything left vacant |
| MBA | CAT, CMAT, GATE or SET-IV, then a group discussion and an interview |
| Ph.D. | GATE or SET-V, then an interview |
Two details in that table decide more admissions than they look like they should. The MBA is the one programme where a score does not settle it: a CAT, CMAT or GATE holder skips SET-IV but still sits the group discussion and the interview, and the final list is built out of 150 marks, the entrance score rescaled to 100 plus 25 for each of the other two. And SET-III does not produce one merit list. It produces four, for the electronics, computer, instrumentation and electrical group, for mechanical, for chemical and food, and for civil. A diploma holder is admitted inside the group whose paper was sat, and crossing a branch within that group moves the candidate into open merit (SET-2026 information brochure).
The Ladder, and Its One Trapdoor
Entry to the Integrated Certificate-Diploma needs a Class 10 pass with English, mathematics and science, taken through SET-I. Leave after two years with 96 credits and you hold a certificate; finish the third year with 142 credits and you hold a diploma; and 50 per cent of the sanctioned strength in each diploma trade, in order of merit, is then promoted into the second year of the matching B.E. on the strength of SET-III (SET-2026 information brochure).
The trapdoor is in the lateral door. SET-IA lets an ITI holder or a 10+2 vocational candidate with 50 per cent marks and two years of industrial experience enter the second year of the Integrated Certificate-Diploma, but the brochure states plainly that students admitted that way "shall not be considered for promotion to the higher module under the vertical promotion scheme of the institute" (SET-2026 information brochure). Enter the ladder one rung up and the vertical route to the degree closes behind you.
Where the Home State Helps, and Where It Does Not
Punjab candidates get a large protected share of exactly one programme. Seats in the three-year Integrated Certificate-Diploma are split 75 per cent for candidates of Punjab excluding Chandigarh and 25 per cent for other states and union territories including Chandigarh, and the brochure then states in capitals that there is no territorial reservation at all for the B.E., the Integrated M.Sc., the postgraduate programmes, the Ph.D. or the vertical-entry seats (SET-2026 information brochure).
That inverts the arithmetic a Punjab family may be carrying over from an NIT. Category reservation still applies on direct-entry seats at 15 per cent for SC, 7.5 per cent for ST, 27 per cent for OBC-NCL, 10 per cent for GEN-EWS and 5 per cent for physically handicapped candidates within each category, and none of it applies to vertical promotion (SET-2026 information brochure).
Dates, Fees and the Money That Does Not Come Back
Every SET paper except the doctoral one was held on 9 May 2026, with SET-I from 11:00 to 13:00 and SET-III from 14:30 to 16:30; SET-V for Ph.D. candidates followed on 6 August 2026, and results for the rest were declared on 18 May 2026. Registration costs Rs 1,000 for a general-category boy applying to the Integrated Certificate-Diploma and Rs 750 for a girl or an SC or ST candidate, while every other programme charges Rs 1,750, Rs 1,250 and Rs 1,000 on the same split, with 18 per cent GST on top. Once a seat is allotted, a token of Rs 5,000 has to be paid to accept it, and that amount is forfeited if the seat is allotted and then abandoned (SET-2026 information brochure).
Where and in what language you sit the paper is decided by which SET you are sitting. SET-2026 ran at twenty centres from Siliguri and Kolkata to Kota, Pune and Bathinda, so no candidate outside Punjab has to reach Sangrur just to write it, though the doctoral paper is set at Longowal and nowhere else. SET-I is offered in English, Hindi and Punjabi; every other SET paper is English only (SET-2026 information brochure). That single line of the brochure tells you who the bottom rung was built for, and who it was not.
Cutoff
The most recent branch-level closing ranks SLIET has published itself sit in its AICTE mandatory disclosure, which records open-category opening and closing ranks for B.E. first-year admission through JEE Main and JoSAA across three cycles. Reading down the closing-rank column tells you how far the line moved.
| B.E. branch, open-category closing rank | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Science and Engineering | 41,001 | 61,453 | 69,047 |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | 44,846 | 81,091 | 92,116 |
| Electrical Engineering | 48,843 | 89,366 | 1,43,549 |
| Food Technology | 60,277 | 2,04,999 | 2,52,903 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 55,005 | 1,16,669 | 2,89,362 |
| Chemical Engineering | 56,006 | 1,38,375 | 3,47,324 |
| Instrumentation and Control Engineering | 57,397 | 1,66,040 | 5,72,924 |
Two cautions belong with that table. Ranks from different admission years are not directly comparable, because the size of the qualifying pool changes between cycles. And the newest branches, civil engineering and artificial intelligence and data science, are absent from it entirely, because the disclosure covers only the seven B.E. courses it lists as running at the time (SLIET AICTE mandatory disclosures).
Category makes as much difference as branch. In the 2021 cycle, computer science closed at 69,047 in the open category, 80,871 for GEN-EWS, 98,915 for OBC-NCL, 2,08,968 for SC and 2,98,564 for ST candidates (SLIET AICTE mandatory disclosures). A candidate reading only the open column is reading the tightest line on the sheet.
Lateral entry is scored on a completely different number, and it is worth seeing why. The SET-III merit list is drawn only from diploma holders who sat that paper, so its ranks run in the hundreds rather than the lakhs. In 2021-22 computer science filled all 83 lateral seats between ranks 1 and 256, mechanical engineering filled 116 between 1 and 174, and instrumentation and control filled 40 of 48 between 63 and 430 (SLIET AICTE mandatory disclosures). A SET-III rank and a JEE Main rank are not the same currency and should never be compared.
One practical limit sits behind all of it: the 2019 to 2021 window in the AICTE mandatory disclosure is as far as SLIET's own published rank history goes, so a candidate in the current cycle has to plan against those ranks and then settle it with the round-by-round allotment sheets JoSAA and CSAB put out for the year being sat.
Placements
SLIET's median undergraduate salary has not moved in three years. The institute filed Rs 4,00,000 for the 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 graduating cohorts alike, and the number of students placed fell across the same span even as the number heading into further study rose.
| Undergraduate outcomes, NIRF 2025 return | 2021-22 | 2022-23 | 2023-24 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduating in the stipulated time | 551 | 606 | 593 |
| Placed | 378 | 400 | 320 |
| Higher studies | 27 | 38 | 48 |
| Median salary | Rs 4,00,000 | Rs 4,00,000 | Rs 4,00,000 |
A median that does not move for three straight cohorts is worth pausing on, because it says the middle of the batch landed in the same salary band each year while the top and the bottom of it stay invisible to this measure. NIRF asks for a median and nothing else, so no highest package and no average can be recovered from this return by anyone, including the institute.
The postgraduate picture is thinner and moved the wrong way. Across all postgraduate programmes, 83 students graduated on time in 2021-22 with 12 placed, 91 in 2022-23 with 25 placed, and 70 in 2023-24 with 12 placed, while the median went Rs 4,15,000, then Rs 4,20,000, then Rs 3,60,000 (SLIET NIRF 2025 university data return). Against those placement counts, 6, 19 and 20 postgraduates went on to further study in the same three years, so higher study is close to a peer of placement here rather than a minority route.
Two different lists circulate about who hires here, and they are not the same claim. The brochure names TCS, Infosys, Nestle, Hindustan Unilever, L&T, Godrej and Boyce, ISGEC Yamuna Nagar, Trident and Punj Lloyd among the firms that recruit through the campus process (SET-2026 information brochure). The placement department's own page names Google, Microsoft, Reliance, Wipro, Honeywell, Shell, Hewlett Packard, LG and Mahindra and Mahindra, but it names them as places where alumni are working, which is a weaker statement than a campus offer and should not be read as one (SLIET Training and Placement).
The department's own placement archive is the harder evidence, and it is the thing to open. Its last full season sheet, covering 2021-2022, is a company-by-company count: 56 employers and 358 selections, of which Cognizant took 42, Wipro 32, Infosys 27, L&T Technology Services 26, TCS 23 and Capgemini 18 (SLIET placement record 2021-22). Alongside it the department keeps a NAAC workbook that names every placed student against an employer, and its last sheet runs to 2022-23 (SLIET placement record). What that archive does not carry, in any year, is an average package, a highest package or a placement percentage, so a headline figure of that kind quoted for SLIET is not being quoted from SLIET.
Seat Matrix
The seat matrix is where the ladder stops being a philosophy and becomes arithmetic. For 2026-2027 the institute offers 481 first-year B.E. seats through JoSAA and CSAB, 422 lateral seats through SET-III, and 510 seats in the Integrated Certificate-Diploma that feeds those lateral seats (SET-2026 information brochure).
| Branch | B.E. first year | Lateral, vertical entry | Lateral, direct entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical Engineering | 94 | 75 | 30 |
| Computer Science and Engineering | 90 | 38 | 26 |
| Chemical Engineering | 45 | 19 | 24 |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | 45 | 19 | 14 |
| Electrical Engineering | 45 | 19 | 15 |
| Instrumentation and Control Engineering | 45 | 19 | 19 |
| Food Technology | 45 | 19 | 45 |
| Civil Engineering | 36 | 19 | 13 |
| Artificial Intelligence and Data Science | 36 | 0 | 9 |
| Total | 481 | 227 | 195 |
The vertical column is reserved: those 227 seats are open only to SLIET's own diploma students from the current passing-out batch, and a candidate from an outside polytechnic competes for the 195 direct-entry seats instead (SET-2026 information brochure). Two rows are worth reading twice. Mechanical engineering hands 75 of its 105 lateral seats to its own diploma holders, the tightest internal pipeline on the sheet. Artificial intelligence and data science has no vertical seats at all and only 9 lateral ones, because the institute's diploma-to-degree linkage table maps no diploma trade to it, so a diploma holder aiming at that branch has almost nowhere to land.
Above the B.E., the intake is small. Integrated M.Tech offers 120 first-year seats across computer science, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering plus 18 lateral ones. The Integrated M.Sc. offers 60 in physics, chemistry and mathematics, exactly 30 of them through JoSAA and CSAB and the other 30 through the institute's own round for candidates holding JEE Main, CUET, PUCET (UG), NEET or SET-II. The M.Sc. offers 75, of which 45 go through CCMN and 30 through the institute. The MBA offers 30 (SET-2026 information brochure).
One number does not line up with another, and the reason matters. SLIET filed a sanctioned first-year undergraduate intake of 237 for each year from 2020-21 to 2023-24 (SLIET NIRF 2025 engineering data return), against the 481 B.E. seats its current brochure lists. The gap is four admission cycles and two new branches, so the older figure describes a smaller institute rather than a contradiction.
Rankings
SLIET appears on two NIRF 2025 tables with almost the same score and a very different profile. It is 79th in engineering on 48.42 and 90th among universities on 48.43, and the parameter split explains why two nearly identical totals are built out of very different columns.
| NIRF 2025 parameter | Engineering | University |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 78.11 | 63.74 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 26.83 | 26.24 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 51.16 | 64.09 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 66.44 | 67.27 |
| Perception | 0.72 | 18.85 |
| Total score | 48.42 | 48.43 |
| Every figure above comes off two Ministry of Education tables published in the same round, the NIRF 2025 engineering ranking and the NIRF 2025 university ranking. |
Read down the engineering column and 78.11 for teaching, learning and resources is the outlier: it beats every other mark SLIET earns on either table, and it is the parameter built out of faculty strength, student numbers and spending per student. Then look at the bottom row. A perception score of 0.72 is not merely low, it is the floor of the whole 2025 engineering top hundred, and only one other institution touches it, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology sitting one rank above at 78. The same institute scores 18.85 on perception among universities, so what changes between the two tables is who was surveyed, not what the campus is.
The one parameter the two tables agree on is research and professional practice, at 26.83 and 26.24. That figure is the ranking's reading of the three sponsored projects and five consultancy projects the institute filed for 2023-24, and it is the number to weigh against the teaching score rather than average with it.
Departments
Teaching is organised under twelve departments, each with a web address printed against it in the brochure. Seven are engineering: computer science, electronics and communication, electrical and instrumentation, mechanical, civil, chemical, and food engineering and technology. Three are sciences, physics, chemistry and mathematics. The last two are management and humanities, and disabilities studies (SET-2026 information brochure).
Two of those twelve are not the usual furniture of a technical campus. Disabilities studies is a teaching department here, not a cell or a committee, and the institute's own annual report has it planning state and national seminars on disability awareness jointly with the district administration (SLIET annual report 2022-23); it sits beside an objective written into the institute's charter, to provide technical education for women through specially designed courses. Food engineering and technology is the other. Elsewhere it is a specialisation inside chemical engineering; here it is a department that owns a B.E., an M.Tech, a diploma trade in food technology and a certificate in food processing and preservation, which is to say it teaches the same subject at four different levels (SET-2026 information brochure).
Because the ladder runs through them, departmental pages here answer a question a campus-wide number cannot: whether the branch you want takes diploma holders at all. Artificial intelligence and data science, the newest B.E., does not appear in the diploma-to-degree linkage table, and no departmental prospectus will change that.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The estate runs to 451 acres (SLIET annual report 2022-23), and the brochure's description of what is inside the wall is a rural one: water bodies, green parks, a herbal nursery, a gymnasium and a swimming pool. Sport is a 400-metre athletic track, floodlit playgrounds, two squash courts in the students activity centre, and courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball and badminton (SET-2026 information brochure). A branch of the Central Bank of India with an ATM, a shopping centre and a health centre with a round-the-clock ambulance sit on the campus because Longowal offers no alternative to them.
That last point is the whole design brief. The nearest city of any size is 100 km away, so the library and the network have to substitute for a city, and both are built accordingly. The central library holds 111,264 books and keeps its reading hall open round the clock through the year (SLIET annual report 2022-23); through the INDEST consortium it opens IEEE, Springer, ASME, ASCE, ACM and Nature on campus, alongside NPTEL lectures and 15 daily newspapers, and the link carrying all of it is a 1 Gbps National Knowledge Network connection plus a 500 Mbps leased line, taken by fibre into the academic blocks and every hostel (SET-2026 information brochure).
Follow the capital spending for 2023-24 and the priority is unambiguous. Laboratory equipment and software drew Rs 2,90,89,872, the library Rs 1,34,84,380, and classrooms, seminar halls and laboratories Rs 2,57,78,501, that last down from Rs 7,96,58,100 a year earlier. The engineering workshops, the part of the campus the certificate and diploma rungs actually live in, drew Rs 14,634, against Rs 4,72,081 the year before (SLIET NIRF 2025 engineering data return). For an institute whose selling point is hands-on training from Class 10, that is the line to ask about.
Money coming in from outside is the thin end of the same account, and it explains the research score directly. Three sponsored projects from three agencies brought Rs 38,26,290 in 2023-24, down from six projects two years earlier, and five consultancy jobs brought Rs 10,82,068 (SLIET NIRF 2025 engineering data return). An undergraduate who wants to work on funded research should assume a queue of that size rather than a laboratory of it.
Accessibility is the one infrastructure question SLIET answers with a department behind it. Its filing records lifts or ramps in more than 80 per cent of buildings, specially designed toilets in more than 80 per cent, and wheelchairs plus transport between blocks (SLIET NIRF 2025 engineering data return), and unlike most campuses filing the same boxes, this one also teaches disabilities studies.
Hostel
A bed here is allotted by which rung of the ladder you are standing on, which is the one allocation rule an NIT applicant will not have met before. The institute runs ten boys hostels at a capacity of 250 each, and it splits them by stage: three multi-seater blocks for Integrated Certificate-Diploma students, four multi-seater for first and second year degree students, two single-seater for pre-final and final year students, and one for the postgraduate and doctoral roll. On the women's side there are four girls hostels at 230 each and a postgraduate girls hostel holding 81 (SLIET hostel system). The brochure totals residential capacity at about 3,400, of whom about 1,000 are women (SET-2026 information brochure).
The charges follow the same logic as the tuition. A B.E. resident pays Rs 4,500 a semester in multiple occupancy or Rs 5,500 in single occupancy, an Integrated Certificate-Diploma resident pays Rs 3,000, and every resident pays a one-time refundable caution deposit of Rs 10,000, with mess and meal charges billed separately (SLIET fee structure).
Three rules catch people out, and all three are in the fee document. Single occupancy is offered only to pre-final and final year students and only when rooms are free, it is not available in the girls hostels at all, and the half-price hostel concession for girl students applies to the Integrated Certificate-Diploma and B.E. programmes rather than to every programme (SLIET fee structure).
Faculty
SLIET entered 169 faculty members in its NIRF returns for 2025 (SLIET NIRF 2025 engineering data return). Read that ratio carefully, because the return it sits in describes only part of the campus: NIRF collects the four-year degree, on a sanctioned first-year intake of 237, and the two-year postgraduate programmes. The certificate and diploma rungs are outside it, and they are not small. The brochure sanctions 510 Integrated Certificate-Diploma seats a year (SET-2026 information brochure), and in 2022-23 the institute handed out 358 certificates and 383 diplomas against 552 degrees (SLIET annual report 2022-23). The same 169 teach all of it.
The doctoral layer is the other half of the brief, and it splits close to evenly between full-time and part-time work. Institute-wide, 108 scholars were pursuing a full-time Ph.D. and 82 a part-time one up to 2023-24, and 24 full-time and 8 part-time doctorates were awarded that year (SLIET NIRF 2025 university data return). Count only the engineering disciplines and the roll drops to 76 full-time and 65 part-time (SLIET NIRF 2025 engineering data return), so roughly a quarter of the doctoral population sits in the science and management departments rather than in engineering.
Salaries for teaching and non-teaching staff came to Rs 58,85,77,332 in 2023-24, the largest single line in the institute's operational expenditure (SLIET NIRF 2025 engineering data return). For names rather than counts, the brochure prints the faculty of every department, and the AICTE mandatory disclosure tabulates each member with department, gender, highest qualification and date of appointment (SLIET AICTE mandatory disclosures).
Notable Alumni
No alumni roster is printed for SLIET. The institute publishes no list of publicly notable graduates that can be checked against a primary source, and a name lifted off a listing site cannot be traced back either to the institution or to the person's own employer, which is the test a name has to pass before it can be repeated. Two bodies hold the real record: the SLIET Alumni Association, which the training and placement site runs pages for (SLIET Training and Placement), and the office of the Dean (Alumni and Industrial Relations), listed by name in the institute's own brochure (SET-2026 information brochure). The most concrete thing the network has done lately is fund a scholarship: three alumni pay Rs 1.5 lakh a year for undergraduate students through the scholarship cell (SLIET scholarship cell).
News & Articles
The 2026-27 intake is in, and the SET portal has moved on to the housekeeping that follows it: a notice on 26 August 2026 inviting tuition fee waiver applications from the Integrated Certificate-Diploma, JEE Main and lateral-entry students admitted for 2026-27, and one on 31 August 2026 chasing documents still outstanding (SLIET Entrance Test portal). Before those came the spot round for the lateral-entry, Integrated M.Tech, Integrated M.Sc., MBA, M.Sc. and M.Tech seats on 27 July 2026, and the reporting notice for JoSAA, CSAB, CCMN and CCMT candidates on 23 July 2026. Both of those last two were published with a local bus schedule attached, which tells you something about arriving at Longowal that no prospectus paragraph does.
Earlier in the cycle the answer keys for SET-2026 went up on the afternoon of the paper itself, 9 May 2026, with challenges taken by email until 11 May (SET-2026 information brochure). Semester-level business, including the branch-change window that JEE Main entrants get after first year, is posted separately by the academic section rather than on the admissions portal (SLIET academic section notices).
College Compare
On the NIRF 2025 engineering table SLIET sits inside a very tight band. Three institutes are separated by a quarter of a point around it, and none of them is a natural substitute for the others.
| NIRF 2025 engineering | Rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Amethi | 78 | 48.52 |
| Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology | 79 | 48.42 |
| Vignan's Foundation for Science, Technology and Research | 80 | 48.27 |
Inside Punjab the ordering is easier to hold in the head, because only seven of the state's institutions make the 2025 engineering hundred at all: Thapar at 29, Chandigarh University at 31, IIT Ropar at 32, Lovely Professional University at 48, Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology Jalandhar at 55, SLIET at 79 and Chitkara at 89 (NIRF 2025 Engineering Ranking). SLIET is sixth of those seven, and it is the one where being from Punjab buys a degree applicant nothing at all: the 75 per cent domicile quota stops at the certificate-diploma programme, and the brochure puts in capitals that no territorial reservation applies to the B.E., the Integrated M.Sc., the postgraduate programmes, the Ph.D. or the vertical-entry seats (SET-2026 information brochure).
For a diploma holder the comparison is a different one entirely, and SLIET is on stronger ground in it. A polytechnic graduate elsewhere in India competes for lateral seats scattered across state technical universities; here 422 lateral seats sit in one deemed-to-be-university that also awards the diploma, and 227 of them are ring-fenced for its own students (SET-2026 information brochure).
Contact & Location
The campus is genuinely rural, and the travel arithmetic is the first thing to check if you are visiting for document verification. Longowal lies about 8 km from Badbar on the Chandigarh to Bathinda highway, with the nearest railway stations at Sunam 16 km away, Sangrur 18 km away and Dhuri 30 km away, and the nearest airports at Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Bathinda (SET-2026 information brochure).

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
Three separate approvals sit behind a SLIET degree, and they do different jobs.
The institute holds a NAAC accreditation valid from 14 September 2023 to 13 September 2028 on a CGPA of 3.02 (SLIET NIRF 2025 university data return), which its brochure records as grade A (SET-2026 information brochure). NAAC assesses the institution as a whole. One document on sliet.ac.in still shows the cycle before that, a B+ expiring on 29 October 2022 (SLIET AICTE mandatory disclosures); it has been superseded, and a candidate who lands on it first is looking at a stale page rather than a downgrade.
The National Board of Accreditation assesses programmes one at a time, and SLIET's annual report records that the institute "bagged NBA Accreditation for all UG (BE) Programs" (SLIET annual report 2022-23). Its own AICTE mandatory disclosure lists the seven accredited undergraduate programmes as chemical, computer science, electrical, electronics and communication, food technology, instrumentation and control, and mechanical engineering, with validity recorded to 30 June 2024 (SLIET AICTE mandatory disclosures). The institute does not publish a current programme-level NBA validity table on its site, so a candidate who needs the accreditation status of one specific branch as of today should ask the academic section for it in writing.
AICTE approval for the engineering courses runs under F. No. North-West/1-44641201866/2025/EOA dated 10 April 2025 (SET-2026 information brochure).
One recognition matters only to ladder students and is easy to miss. The Department of Technical Education and Industrial Training of the Punjab government recognised SLIET's certificate courses as equivalent to 10+2 by memo 13/23/05-1 T.S.2/32 dated 4 January 2006, a Ministry of Education notification declared them equivalent to 10+2 for job purposes, and Panjab University recognised them for admission to the first year of B.A., B.Sc. and B.C.A. courses (SET-2026 information brochure). A student who exits after the two-year certificate is not left holding a document nobody accepts.
Aid
Scholarships
Sort the undergraduate roll by who settles the tuition bill and the picture is a thin one. Out of 1,932, the state and central schemes cover 381 in full and the institute's own funds another 119. Private bodies cover nobody at all. And 667 are recorded as holding no full reimbursement of any kind (SLIET NIRF 2025 engineering data return). Government money is the main relief on this campus without being the common one.
Two reductions arrive without an application, because they are written into the fee table. A girl student on the Integrated Certificate-Diploma or the B.E. pays half the hostel fee, and an SC candidate of Punjab is billed at whatever the Dr Ambedkar Scholarship scheme of the Punjab government allows once the documents are in (SLIET fee structure).
Everything else runs through the scholarship cell, whose notice board currently carries the Poor Student Aid Fund, the AICTE scholarship and fellowship schemes, the AICTE Pragati scheme for girl students, the Dr Ambedkar scholarship for SC Punjab students for 2025-26, the Sardar Rajinder Pal Gill Memorial M.Tech scholarship, and a scholarship of Rs 1.5 lakh a year for undergraduates funded by three of the institute's own alumni. The cell also names a nodal officer for the J&K PMSSS route and for the Punjab SC scheme, which is who a candidate from either group writes to rather than the general office (SLIET scholarship cell).
One warning is written into the brochure for M.Tech candidates: admission on the strength of a GATE score does not carry a GATE scholarship with it, and any stipend is sanctioned and disbursed by AICTE under the direct benefit transfer scheme (SET-2026 information brochure). The cell answers at scholarshipcell@sliet.ac.in.

Student Reviews
A single star rating for SLIET would be the wrong instrument even if the ratings on listing sites were verified, and they are not. The ladder puts a school-leaver in a welding certificate, a diploma holder three years into a B.E. and a doctoral scholar under one name, on one campus, paying Rs 9,500, Rs 33,000 and Rs 8,800 a semester respectively. An average built across those three is not describing anybody, and an average built by anonymous self-selection is not describing anybody either.
The substitute is available and specific. About 3,400 students live inside the wall, sorted into hostels by exactly which rung they are on, so a prospective certificate student and a prospective lateral-entry student can be put in touch with people whose year is the one they would join. Ask through the department and the hostel rather than through a listing site, and ask the certificate and diploma residents first, because theirs is the experience least represented anywhere online.
Campus
Gallery
Nothing is pictured here, and a borrowed frame would be a particularly poor trade in this case. What is worth looking at on a 451-acre rural estate is not a facade but the workshops, the lake and the certificate trades, and SLIET already photographs those itself: the institute runs a photo gallery on its own site, and its annual report closes with thirteen pages titled Year 2022-23 in Pictures (SLIET annual report 2022-23). An image appears here only once it has come off sliet.ac.in and can be credited there, and none has been taken yet.
