Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar
IVRI Izatnagar is ranked fifth on the 2025 NIRF agriculture and allied sectors table with a score of 67.66, and the next veterinary university on that list is ranked 26th. That distance is why a veterinary applicant looks at Bareilly first. What most listings get wrong is the way in. The BVSc & AH degree is filled on a NEET (UG) rank through counselling the institute conducts itself at Izatnagar, while the two B.Tech degrees are allotted entirely by ICAR's national online counselling on a CUET score. The fee books, the seat split and the outcome record diverge just as sharply between those two doors.
Overview
Start with what IVRI was built to do, because it explains the shape of everything else. The institute opened on 9th December, 1889 as Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory at Pune, a laboratory for making sera and vaccines rather than a teaching campus. It moved to Mukteswar in the Kumaon hills in 1893, opened the Izatnagar site in 1913 for large-scale serum and vaccine production, and shifted its headquarters from Mukteswar to Izatnagar in 1947. Administrative control passed to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1966. Degree-awarding power came last, and late: deemed-to-be university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act took effect on 16th November, 1983, nearly a century after the laboratory opened, and the first academic session ran from 15th January, 1985.
| At a glance | Detail |
|---|---|
| Type | Government of India, an ICAR institute holding deemed-to-be university status |
| Founded | 1889 at Pune, headquarters at Izatnagar since 1947 |
| Deemed university since | 16 November 1983 |
| Campus | 440.54 acres, Izatnagar, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh |
| Undergraduate teaching from | 2015-16 (BVSc & AH) |
| Master's and doctoral disciplines | 19 and 17 |
| NIRF 2025, Agriculture and Allied Sectors | Rank 5, score 67.66 |
That sequence matters more than it looks, for two reasons. The first is that undergraduate teaching is young here and postgraduate teaching is not. Post-graduate training began in 1900 with refresher courses for field, civil and army veterinarians, degree-conferring started with the Post-Graduate College of Animal Sciences in 1958, and the BVSc & AH only opened in 2015-16. The second is geographic. Izatnagar is the headquarters, but the institute also runs campuses at Mukteswar, Bengaluru and regional stations at Palampur, Kolkata and Pune, and a discipline you want may be taught by a scientist posted away from Bareilly. The degree programmes described here are the Izatnagar ones.
Courses & Fees
The degree list is narrower than the campus size suggests, and it splits cleanly by level. One veterinary bachelor's degree, two four-year B.Techs added recently, master's and doctoral programmes in the veterinary disciplines, and post-graduate diploma courses that go back to a refresher course first run in 1900.
| Programme | Duration | Entrance | Intake |
|---|---|---|---|
| BVSc & AH | 5 years and 6 months including a one-year rotating internship | NEET (UG) | 41 regular seats plus VCI, payment and NRI seats for 2026-27 |
| B.Tech Biotechnology, specialising in Animal Biotechnology | 4 years | CUET (ICAR-UG) | 25 |
| B.Tech Dairy Technology | 4 years, including a one-year Student READY programme | CUET (ICAR-UG) | 15 |
| MVSc, 19 disciplines | 4 semesters, two of coursework and two of research | ICAR All India Entrance Examination (PG) | 211 in 2023-24 |
| M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Statistics or Bioinformatics | 4 semesters | ICAR All India Entrance Examination (PG) | 4 in 2023-24 |
| MBA in Agri Business Management | 4 semesters | ICAR All India Entrance Examination (PG) | 10 in 2023-24 |
| PhD, 17 disciplines | 6 semesters, two of coursework and four of research | ICAR JRF/SRF (PhD) competitive examination | 137 in 2023-24 |
IVRI prints the veterinary charges one professional year at a time, and the fourth is the odd one out because the syllabus schedules it over one and a half years rather than one, which lifts every head on the bill by half again. For a General or OBC candidate on a regular seat the grand total is Rs 58,500 in the first professional year, Rs 38,200 in each of the second and third, Rs 57,300 in the fourth and Rs 33,000 during the internship year, hostel charges included. An SC or ST candidate pays Rs 36,800, then Rs 16,500, Rs 24,750 and Rs 14,000 across the same years, because tuition, examination, sports and welfare heads are not charged to those categories at all.
| BVSc & AH, annual grand total | General/OBC | SC/ST |
|---|---|---|
| First professional year | Rs 58,500 | Rs 36,800 |
| Second and third professional years, each | Rs 38,200 | Rs 16,500 |
| Fourth professional year | Rs 57,300 | Rs 24,750 |
| Internship year | Rs 33,000 | Rs 14,000 |
A payment seat is a different proposition entirely. It carries a Programme Fee of Rs 5,00,000 a year, rising to Rs 7,50,000 for the long fourth year, paid by demand draft on top of everything above, which takes the first-year grand total to Rs 5,58,500 for a General or OBC candidate. An NRI or OCI seat is priced in dollars instead: a programme fee of 8,000 USD in the first, second, third and internship years and 12,000 USD in the fourth, plus an admission fee of 2,000 USD paid once, on top of the rupee heads. Three fee books sit behind one degree, so establish which seat category a quoted IVRI figure belongs to before you plan around it.
A master's year at Izatnagar is billed a little under the first veterinary year and a doctoral year a little over it. The MBA sits in a bracket of its own.
| Programme | First year, General/OBC | First year, SC/ST |
|---|---|---|
| MVSc | Rs 55,500 | Rs 30,800 |
| M.Sc. | Rs 55,500 | Rs 30,800 |
| PhD | Rs 70,000 | Rs 41,300 |
| MBA in Agri Business Management | Rs 2,55,500 | Rs 2,30,800 |
| B.Tech | Rs 58,500 | Rs 36,800 |
The MBA gap is not a printing error. That programme carries a Programme Fund of Rs 2,00,000 a year that no other degree here levies, and it is the only IVRI qualification priced like a management school rather than like a public research institute.
Admissions
Two entrance systems run in parallel at Izatnagar, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake an applicant can make. For the veterinary degree, admission is made only on the basis of merit obtained in the NEET (UG) examination for the year in which admissions are made, subject to the Veterinary Council of India Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education Regulations, 2016. The counselling itself is not ICAR's and not the VCI's: it is conducted by ICAR-IVRI Deemed University at the University Building at Izatnagar, on an all-India basis, and the candidate must attend in person. For the two B.Tech degrees the arrangement inverts. ICAR's own brochure records that for 2026-27, admission runs to 20% seats, and 100% of seats at ICAR-NDRI Karnal, ICAR-IARI New Delhi, ICAR-IVRI Izatnagar, RLBCAU Jhansi and Dr. RPCAU Pusa, and every round of that counselling is transacted online, from choice filling to allotment to document upload. The candidate turns up in person once and once only, for physical reporting at the finally allotted university after counselling has closed, carrying the originals of everything already uploaded.
| Programme | Qualifying test | Who conducts counselling |
|---|---|---|
| BVSc & AH, regular, payment and NRI/OCI seats | NEET (UG) | ICAR-IVRI Deemed University, at Izatnagar, in person |
| BVSc & AH, VCI quota seats | NEET (UG) | Veterinary Council of India, on its own seat roster |
| B.Tech Biotechnology and B.Tech Dairy Technology | CUET (ICAR-UG) | ICAR, online, through icarcounseling.com |
| MVSc, M.Sc. and MBA | ICAR All India Entrance Examination (PG) | ICAR, online |
| PhD | ICAR JRF/SRF (PhD) examination | ICAR |
Eligibility for the veterinary seat is set by the VCI rather than by the institute. A candidate must be an Indian national, must have attained 17 years of age by the 31st December preceding admission, must have qualified NEET (UG), and must have passed the qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English as a core course. The marks bar is 50% in aggregate of those subjects for General category candidates and 47.5% for SC, ST and other specified categories. The B.Tech doors are set lower and, unlike the veterinary one, open to a mathematics stream: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics and English, 50% in aggregate and 40% for SC, ST and BC candidates, excluding optional subjects.
One trap for an overseas applicant sits between two of the institute's own pages. The standing admission procedure page says an NRI candidate is admitted on the merit of the 10+2 examination without appearing in NEET (UG); the 2026-27 bulletin that governs this cycle says the opposite, basing NRI and OCI admission on NEET (UG) merit and listing the NEET admit card and rank card among the documents the application must carry. The bulletin is the document for the session you are applying into, and the registrar is the office to write to if the two still disagree when you apply.
The 2026-27 veterinary calendar is published in full, and it is worth reading as a sequence rather than a list of dates. Online registration on the institute's own portal ran from 14.08.2026 to 31.08.2026, with a registration fee of Rs 2,000 for General, OBC and EWS candidates and Rs 1,000 for SC, ST and Divyang candidates. The rank list of candidates invited to the first round is notified on 10.09.2026 and that round is held on 22.09.2026; a second round follows on 05.10.2026 if seats remain, a mop-up round against vacant regular seats on 15.10.2026, and counselling for payment and NRI/OCI seats on 16.10.2026. No individual intimation is sent at any stage, every rank list appears on the institute website only, and any change to the schedule is uploaded there rather than communicated.
One clause deserves a candidate's attention before they apply, because it has no equivalent in most admission notices. The MSVE regulations bar admission to the veterinary degree for a candidate with disability of the total body including chest or spine of more than 50%, disability of the lower limb of more than 50%, disability of the upper limb, visual or hearing disability, progressive diseases such as myopathies, or any disability that would interfere with the duties of a veterinarian. The certificate is issued by a government-authorised medical board of at least three specialists and must be no more than three months old at the time of submission.
Cutoff
Ask for the IVRI cutoff and the honest reply is a question back: which door. The veterinary seats and the two B.Tech seats are ranked on different examinations by different bodies, so they close at numbers that have nothing to do with each other. For the veterinary degree the merit list is NEET's, so the operative threshold is that candidates securing equal to or more than the NEET (UG) cut-off marks for their category will be considered, and the seat then closes at whatever rank the institute's own counselling reaches for that category in that round. IVRI notifies who is invited to each round, not where the round stopped, and it never publishes an after-the-fact closing rank. A number quoted anywhere as the BVSc cutoff at Izatnagar is therefore a reconstruction from an earlier year's allotment, not something the institute has ever published.
The B.Tech seats are the opposite case. ICAR publishes the closing marks and the closing all-India rank for every institute, course, domicile state, category and round, and IVRI's rows are in it. These are the first-round figures for CUET (ICAR-UG) 2025.
| Domicile state | Programme | Category | Closing all-India rank, first round |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh | B.Tech Bio-Technology | UR | 1336 |
| Uttar Pradesh | B.Tech Bio-Technology | OBC | 2846 |
| Uttar Pradesh | B.Tech Bio-Technology | EWS | 3408 |
| Uttar Pradesh | B.Tech Dairy Technology | OBC | 3995 |
| Bihar | B.Tech Bio-Technology | UR | 1403 |
| Bihar | B.Tech Bio-Technology | SC | 8374 |
| Kerala | B.Tech Bio-Technology | UR | 57 |
| Jharkhand | B.Tech Bio-Technology | ST | 10143 |
| West Bengal | B.Tech Dairy Technology | UR | 2833 |
| Haryana | B.Tech Dairy Technology | SC | 8884 |
Set the Kerala row beside the Jharkhand one and a single headline cutoff stops making sense. The same programme in the same round closed at rank 57 for an unreserved candidate domiciled in Kerala and at rank 10143 for a Scheduled Tribe candidate domiciled in Jharkhand, because ICAR's allotment is worked state by state and category by category against a very small seat pool. The bar you actually face is your own state and category row for the round you are in, and it is settled afresh in each cycle.
Placements
IVRI's placement record is thick on its postgraduates and thin on its veterinary graduates, and the destinations it publishes alongside point more often at a government examination than at a campus offer. Its NIRF 2025 return reports both wings.
| Cohort | Graduated in stipulated time | Placed | Median salary of placed graduates | Went to higher study |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PG, 2023-24 | 111 | 43 | Rs 10,43,460 | 68 |
| PG, 2022-23 | 106 | 69 | Rs 10,45,000 | 33 |
| PG, 2021-22 | 121 | 85 | Rs 10,60,000 | 26 |
| BVSc & AH, 2023-24 | 20 | 7 | Rs 10,43,460 | 12 |
| BVSc & AH, 2021-22 | 10 | 7 | Rs 10,43,000 | 3 |
The median barely moves, sitting between Rs 10,43,000 and Rs 10,60,000 across every cohort reported, which is what a salary looks like when most of the placed graduates enter government scales rather than a competitive private market. Where the cohort went, though, inverted inside two years. In 2023-24, 68 of the 111 postgraduates who finished on time went on to higher study and 43 took a job; in 2021-22 the placed figure had been 85. A master's class at a doctoral institute walking towards the PhD is what the numbers describe, not a hiring failure.
A second file the institute publishes carries more signal than any package figure. Its roll of graduates who cleared state, national or international examinations between 2018 and 2023 is dominated by ASRB/ICAR-NET, the national eligibility test the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board conducts for teaching posts in the agricultural universities, with the Agricultural Research Service examination, AICE-JRF/SRF, UGC-NET and the public service commissions of Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh accounting for most of the rest. Its year-wise placed students roll matches that shape: veterinary surgeons and veterinary officers in state animal husbandry departments, ICAR scientists, senior technical officers at IVRI itself, and assistant professors at the veterinary universities.
Campus recruitment exists alongside that and is modest but real. The placement and counselling cell sits in the University academic block and has run drives for Banas Dairy, Genus Breeding India, Vetic, Agri Genetics, ARCL Organics, Synthite Industries, SA-FORD and T & M Services Consulting, alongside postings circulated for the National Dairy Development Board at Anand and the 1962 Mobile Veterinary Unit programme in Uttarakhand. The army reaches the campus by a different route: the cell's own notices record a visit by the Brigadier RVS of the Remount Veterinary Corps from HQ Central Command, and an interactive session between RVC officers, University officials and students. A corporate package is a thinner market here than at a dairy technology or agribusiness campus. For the state service, the research service or a doctorate, the ground is about as good as it gets in India.
Seat Matrix
The veterinary seat matrix for 2026-27 is published as counts, not percentages, and the split is what decides whether you have a route in at all.
| BVSc & AH seat category, 2026-27 | Seats | Filled by |
|---|---|---|
| VCI quota | 9 | Veterinary Council of India, on its own roster |
| Regular/open | 41 | ICAR-IVRI Deemed University counselling |
| Payment seats, supernumerary | 8 | ICAR-IVRI Deemed University counselling |
| NRI/OCI seats, supernumerary | 2 | ICAR-IVRI Deemed University counselling |
Reservation applies to the regular seats on the central pattern: 15% for Scheduled Caste candidates, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe candidates, 27% for non-creamy-layer OBC candidates on the Central list, 10% for the Economically Weaker Section of the general category, and 5% horizontally for Divyang candidates under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. The payment seats carry their own small roster of 1 Scheduled Caste, 1 Scheduled Tribe and 2 non-creamy-layer OBC seats, and an unfilled payment or NRI seat is never converted into a regular one, which is worth knowing before you wait on a mop-up round.
The ranking return shows how fast the teaching side has been scaled up behind those counts. Sanctioned intake on the six-year veterinary programme was 20 in 2018-19, held at 24 for the two years after that, then went 40, 50 and 55 by 2023-24; the four-year undergraduate programme enters the return that same year at 15 seats; postgraduate intake jumped from 153 to 211 inside one session. Not one of those seats carries a domicile quota, and the enrolment roll shows what that produces: 111 of the 166 students on the six-year programme and 293 of the 320 postgraduates were counted as coming from outside the state.
Rankings
One table carries IVRI's national standing, and the interesting part of it is the company. The NIRF 2025 agriculture and allied sectors ranking puts it fifth on a score of 67.66, and no other NIRF 2025 list carries it at all. Everything above it is a crop, dairy or multi-faculty university; the next veterinary university on the same table is 26th.
| Agriculture parameter, NIRF 2025 | Score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 84.85 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 82.74 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 60.48 |
| Perception | 52.25 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 47.98 |
Read the five parameters rather than the rank they add up to. Teaching, Learning and Resources at 84.85 is IVRI's strongest, second in the top five only to IARI's 86.59, and a parameter weighted towards faculty strength is exactly where a place with more scientists than undergraduates should score. Research and Professional Practice at 47.98 is its weakest, which looks wrong for a research institute until you notice the parameter is benchmarked per head against institution size: one discipline's output, measured beside universities that publish on agronomy, horticulture, forestry, fisheries and food technology at once. On the international side the institute's own bulletin records placement in the 51-100 band for Veterinary Science in the QS World University Rankings 2026.
Departments
There are no departments here in the ordinary sense. A postgraduate is admitted into a research division, and the divisions are grouped in three, along the animal rather than along an academic faculty.
| Group | Divisions and sections |
|---|---|
| Animal Health Sciences | Bacteriology and Mycology, Biological Products, Biological Standardization, Epidemiology, Immunology, Medicine, Parasitology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Surgery, Veterinary Biotechnology, Veterinary Public Health, Virology |
| Animal Production Sciences | Animal Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Animal Reproduction, Livestock Production and Management, Livestock Products Technology, Physiology and Climatology, Temperate Animal Husbandry |
| Basic and Social Sciences | Biochemistry, Extension Education, Livestock Economics Statistics and Information Technology, Veterinary Anatomy, MBA Agribusiness Management |
The doctoral eligibility rules show how tightly the divisions are drawn. Most disciplines require a BVSc & AH plus a master's in the same discipline, but veterinary biotechnology accepts a master's in Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Animal Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology or Virology, veterinary extension education accepts one in veterinary medicine, gynaecology and obstetrics, surgery or animal nutrition, and agricultural economics is the only discipline that admits a B.Sc in Agriculture holder. Check the specific discipline row before you assume your master's qualifies.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The campus runs to 440.54 acres and carries the infrastructure of a working animal health institute rather than a teaching block with laboratories attached: a Referral Veterinary Polyclinic that doubles as the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, livestock farms, feed and fodder farms, a medical dispensary, a communication centre, a bank and a post office, all inside the gate. Alongside the clinical wing sit the central facilities a research student draws on, among them the ARIS computer centre, a bioinformatics centre, a central instrument facility, a germplasm centre established at Izatnagar in 1982, a laboratory animal resource section, a centre for wildlife and a veterinary science museum.
The library is the deepest single resource on site. The National Library of Veterinary Sciences holds more than 2,50,000 items across books, journals, monographs, theses, reference works, bulletins and reprints, subscribes to about 125 foreign and 103 Indian journals a year, runs KOHA for automation, has digitised every PhD thesis it holds for reading on the premises, and provides email and internet access at 24 terminals through all working hours, with three air-conditioned reading sections and 22 cameras on closed-circuit surveillance.
Medical cover is on campus and continuous: qualified medical officers live on the campus and are available round the clock at the institute dispensary, and a Mediclaim policy covering hospitalisation is offered to postgraduate students on an optional basis, though not to in-service students.
Access across a site of 440.54 acres is a transport question as much as a ramp question, because the divisions are scattered over it rather than stacked in one block. IVRI's ranking return claims lifts or ramps and specially designed toilets in more than 80% of buildings, and records wheelchairs, walking aids and movement between buildings as provided.
Hostel
Read the hostel position before you commit, because the institute states it plainly and it is not what most campuses promise. There is one International Trainees Hostel, four boys hostels and one girls hostel, all with wi-fi, and accommodation is allotted to students selected for the PhD and MVSc programmes on merit, subject to availability, and cannot be claimed as a matter of right. The 2026-27 bulletin repeats the warning for veterinary undergraduates: hostel facility is limited, allotment goes by merit or rank depending on availability, and students are advised to make their own arrangements for accommodation during the course of study.
Where a room is allotted, the charge is published rather than quoted case by case. Hostel fees including water and electricity are Rs 12,000 a year for a veterinary undergraduate, rising to Rs 18,000 across the longer fourth professional year, against a one-time refundable hostel security deposit of Rs 5,000. Married accommodation is charged separately at Rs 1,000 a month with a proposed revision to Rs 2,000, and hostel charges for a foreign national run at Rs 2,000 a month with a proposed Rs 5,000. Bareilly rents are the fallback, and a first-year student should budget for them rather than assume a bed.
Faculty
Whoever signs off your thesis at Izatnagar holds an ICAR scientist post rather than a lectureship, and the institute counts that population twice for two different purposes. The NIRF 2025 return enters 203 faculty members. The institute's own 2025-26 faculty list runs to 189 names and is more useful to a prospective research student, because it gives each person's discipline, present designation and place of posting, and the postings are spread across Izatnagar, Mukteswar, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Palampur and Pune. Check that column before you accept a discipline: the division that would host your thesis may sit at a hill station rather than at headquarters.
What those scientists are carrying alongside the teaching is what a thesis supervisor's time gets drawn from here. In 2023-24 the institute reported 79 sponsored projects funded by 79 agencies and worth Rs 12,92,95,440, alongside 74 consultancy projects for 240 client organisations worth Rs 3,32,94,608; the same consultancy line had shown 56 clients in 2021-22 and 30 in the year between, so 2023-24 is a spike rather than a trend. It carried 246 full-time doctoral scholars, of whom 60 graduated that year. The institute's own front page counts 200+ scientists, 230+ research projects, 34 granted patents, 46 registered copyrights and 47 commercialised technologies. Academic charge sits with the Joint Director (Academic) and Dean, Dr S.K. Mendiratta, with Dr Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), holding additional charge as Director.
Notable Alumni
One name is documented well enough to publish. Shubham Narwal, a 2019 batch BVSc student who was still completing his internship at Izatnagar when the news broke, is recorded by the institute as the first Indian veterinarian to secure the Rhodes Scholarship, none having been selected since its inception in India in 1947. The undergraduate programme he came through had taken its first cohort in 2015-16.
No other individual is named here, because the institute publishes no roll of distinguished alumni and a list of well-known veterinarians assembled from elsewhere would be assertion rather than record. What IVRI does maintain is a year-by-year account of where its graduates went, and that placed students roll is the traceable answer: assistant professors at GADVASU, KVASU, TANUVAS, DUVASU, BASU, ANDUAT and RLBCAU, ICAR and ICMR scientists, veterinary surgeons and officers across Kerala, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Meghalaya, an assistant commandant in the ITBP, and managers at NABARD, ABIS Exports and Venkateshwara.
News & Articles
IVRI announces admission business on its own website and nowhere else, which makes its front page the only reliable feed for an applicant. The items sitting there now include the BVSc & AH admission 2026-27 notice, ICAR-IVRI BVSc students receiving hands-on training in wildlife anaesthesia and health management at Corbett Tiger Reserve in August 2026, and the CADRAD ISO/IEC 17025:2017 assessment. For a veterinary applicant the practical rule is narrow: the rank list for every counselling round is notified on the IVRI website only, no separate intimation is sent to candidates, and any change to the counselling schedule is uploaded there too.
College Compare
Ranking IVRI against the four names above it is a category error. IARI New Delhi at 89.23, NDRI Karnal at 75.87, Punjab Agricultural University at 75.83 and Banaras Hindu University at 68.95 are crop, dairy or multi-faculty institutions, and not one of them awards a BVSc & AH. Put it beside the veterinary universities instead and it leads them by a distance, the closest being Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, 26th on 52.91.
At undergraduate level the comparison turns, and for some applicants it turns against Izatnagar. A state veterinary university usually admits a larger BVSc class, typically reserves a share of it for home-state candidates, and spreads its clinical teaching across several affiliated college hospitals. IVRI fills 41 regular seats on all-India merit with no home-state advantage at all, and sets that very small class alongside a postgraduate and doctoral population many times its size. That ratio is the argument for coming here if the plan runs towards a doctorate, an ICAR scientist post or the research service. If the plan is a veterinary degree near home at the lowest rank that will reach one, a state veterinary university is the more realistic target.
Contact & Location
The campus sits at Izatnagar in Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, at pin code 243122. The institute publishes its distances precisely, which is more useful than a map pin on counselling day: 258 km from New Delhi, about 8 km from Bareilly Junction, 1 km from Izatnagar Railway Station and 6.5 km from Bareilly Airport. Counselling itself is held at the ICAR-IVRI Deemed University Building on the Izatnagar campus, and physical presence is compulsory.

Legal disputes over counselling and seat allotment fall within the jurisdiction of the Bareilly court only, and any legal question arising out of the counselling is entertained only when raised within 30 days of the allotment of seats. Queries about the examinations themselves stop at the gate, since NEET (UG) is the National Testing Agency's paper and the CUET (ICAR-UG) allotment is ICAR's process, and neither office at Izatnagar can change or explain a score or a seat allotted elsewhere.
Verified
Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
Two approvals actually govern this degree, and neither is the one applicants tend to ask for. The binding one is the Veterinary Council of India: the BVSc & AH is taught under the Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education Regulations, 2016, and the VCI fills part of the intake off its own roster, which is a regulator putting its own candidates into a programme it has cleared. The second is the deemed-to-be university status of 16th November, 1983, without which a research institute under ICAR administration since 1966 would have to hang its degrees on a state university's name.
On NAAC the institute calls itself an NAAC A++ accredited institute in its own 2026-27 bulletin. Read that as the institute's current statement rather than a settled record: its website carries a full NAAC menu of SSR, DVV, Appeal and Re-DVV (Appeal) documents, which is the paper trail a grade leaves when it has been through clarification and appeal. The letter, the score and the validity window are all worth confirming against NAAC's own list of accredited institutions before any of the three gets quoted back at you.
One laboratory accreditation is worth naming separately because it is the one a clinical or diagnostic student will work under. The Centre for Animal Disease Research and Diagnosis, set up at Izatnagar in 1986, is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 under certificate TC-16578, valid from 13/08/2025 to 12/08/2029, for tests including real-time PCR detection of bovine herpesvirus-1 and rabies virus detection by direct fluorescent antibody and RT-PCR against the WOAH Terrestrial Manual.

Scholarships
Money moves towards the student at the master's and doctoral levels here, and IVRI publishes exactly how much and to how many. The Institute Scholarship is admissible only to candidates admitted through the competitive entrance examination for the MVSc or PhD programmes, awarded by the Joint Director (Academic) on the recommendation of a standing committee that weighs admission merit first and subsequent performance at the institute after that. No holder may take any other scholarship, award or employment without prior approval.
| Scheme, 2022-23 | Students | Amount disbursed | Awarding agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| PhD Institute Scholarship | 173 | Rs 17,40,000 | ICAR-IVRI Deemed University |
| MVSc Institute Scholarship | 129 | Rs 10,05,480 | ICAR-IVRI Deemed University |
| ICAR-PG Scholarship | 105 | Rs 13,27,200 | ICAR |
| National Talent Scholarship | 63 | Rs 11,88,000 | ICAR |
| ICAR-JRF/SRF (PhD) | 58 | Rs 17,98,000 | ICAR |
| Internship Allowance | 20 | Rs 7,20,000 | ICAR-IVRI Deemed University |
| Merit Scholarship | 14 | Rs 3,88,496 | ICAR-IVRI Deemed University |
| ICMR-JRF | 7 | Rs 25,20,000 | Indian Council of Medical Research |
| UGC-JRF | 6 | Rs 21,60,000 | University Grants Commission |
Two things stand out in that table. The first is reach: the two Institute Scholarships alone carried 173 and 129 students in a single year, which is a large share of a research population, and the National Talent Scholarship count rose from 41 in 2021-22 to 63 the next year. The second is that the biggest cheques come from outside ICAR entirely: an ICMR-JRF held by 7 students carried Rs 25,20,000, and DBT, DST-INSPIRE, CSIR and the National Fellowship schemes for SC and OBC scholars all appear in the same record. A funded doctorate at Izatnagar is often funded by a body other than the one that admitted you.
The institute also runs an unusually specific set of endowed medals, most of them tied to a single discipline. The Dr. D.R. Uppal Award goes to the best PhD thesis in veterinary microbiology, bacteriology, immunology or virology, the Dr. S.K. Talpatra Award to the doctoral scholar with the highest OGPA in animal nutrition, the Dr. S.S. Prabhu Award for the best thesis in animal genetics and breeding, and the Dr. Bhagabat Panda Award for the highest OGPA in poultry science, alongside gold, silver and bronze medals for the best master's and doctoral students overall.

No rating is published for IVRI, because nothing on the record could support one. A veterinary class this small produces opinions rather than a sample, and the star scores circulating under the institute's name come from listing sites that never matched a post to an enrolment record. The checkable material has been used in its place: the graduation, placement and higher-study counts the institute filed with the ranking framework, its own roll of placed graduates, and its list of alumni who cleared ASRB, ARS and the state public service commissions. A first-hand account of the polyclinic rotations, the farm duty or a Bareilly winter is worth reading on its own terms. It is not a measurement, and nobody should present it as one.

Nothing has been hosted here yet. What a veterinary applicant would actually learn something from is the unstaged material: the consulting floor of the Referral Veterinary Polyclinic on a working morning, the fodder plots, a vaccine laboratory bench, the specimen cases in the veterinary science museum. None of that has been taken from the institute's own site and self-hosted, and a stock frame would occupy the space without showing any of it. The image and video galleries on ivri.nic.in hold the current pictures until this is filled.
