National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal

Karnal, Haryana Est. 1955 Official site Updated
NIRF Agriculture
#2

NDRI Karnal is one of the few Indian campuses where the teaching material is a herd. The institute sits second on the National Institutional Ranking Framework's 2025 agriculture and allied sectors table, and it gets there on a single commodity, milk, rather than on the spread of crop and animal science its rivals cover. Its sanctioned undergraduate intake is 41 seats a year, and its ranking-framework return counts 483 full-time doctoral scholars on the rolls. Milk is the entire syllabus at Karnal, and the doctoral wing is where most of the work gets done.

Overview

The lineage starts a long way from Haryana. The institute opened in Bangalore in 1923 as the Imperial Institute for Animal Husbandry and Dairying, was renamed the Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936, and shifted to its present Karnal site in 1955, taking the name it still carries. The Bangalore establishment stayed on as the Southern Regional Station, an Eastern Regional Station followed at Kalyani in West Bengal in 1964, and the whole institute passed to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1970. Degree-awarding power came last, with deemed university status granted in 1989.

Two things follow from that history for an applicant. Scope is the first: the taught degrees are anchored at Karnal, while the Bengaluru and Kalyani stations carry parts of the master's and doctoral programmes, so a discipline you want may sit at a regional station rather than at headquarters. The second is physical scale of an unusual kind. The Karnal campus runs to 560 hectares and keeps over 1,800 dairy animals under a modern milking parlour, and the work is organised into 13 research divisions and sections rather than academic departments in the usual sense.

Courses & Fees

NDRI teaches one subject in depth. The undergraduate offering is a four-year B.Tech, taught in Dairy Technology, Food Technology and Biotechnology, with in-plant training on dairy plant operation and management in the seventh and eighth semesters at the institute's own model plant or a commercial dairy. Above it sit the Master's and the Ph.D. in Dairying, each offered in 14 disciplines running from Dairy Microbiology and Dairy Engineering to Animal Genetics and Breeding, Agronomy and Agricultural Extension Education. Two diplomas, in Dairy Technology and in Animal Husbandry and Dairying, complete the list.

The fee is where the public record thins, and it is worth being exact about what exists. The institute's fee page sets the rules rather than the amounts: fees are charged as prescribed by the University and ICAR and paid each semester, and tuition fee, welfare fund and examination fee are exempted to Diploma and B.Tech.(DT) students belonging to SC/ST category. No rupee figure appears on it. Three amounts do turn up elsewhere on the institute's site.

Published chargeAmountWho pays it
Deposit to confirm admissionRs 2,000Every candidate admitted through ICAR counselling
Tuition on an additional paid undergraduate seatRs 1,00,000 per semesterCandidates taking one of the extra B.Tech seats for 2026-27, over and above institutional fees, hostel and mess charges
Institutional Economic FeeUS $400 a monthForeign students not sponsored under a government fellowship

For a student on the ICAR merit route the effective cost is lower than any of those charges suggest. The institute's ranking return counts 34 undergraduates whose tuition is met in full out of institution funds, and for a research student the number that decides affordability is the monthly institute scholarship rather than any fee.

Admissions

Every route into NDRI runs off a national ICAR entrance rather than a paper the institute sets. Undergraduate admission runs on CUET (ICAR-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency, with candidates selected on combined merit and allotted seats in the counselling ICAR conducts, held at the National Agricultural Science Centre Complex on the Pusa campus in New Delhi. Master's admission runs on the all-India entrance the National Testing Agency conducts for ICAR, held at centres across the country in May or June, with allotment again by merit and counselling. Doctoral entry follows the same national route, except that counselling for in-service candidates seeking seats reserved for them at the ICAR deemed universities is held at each deemed university itself. Neither JEE nor NEET reaches this campus.

ProgrammeEligibilityAge at admission
B.Tech10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology, plus English, and at least 50% in aggregate, 40% for SC, ST and PH candidatesAt least 16 and not over 23
Master's in DairyingA bachelor's degree in the relevant subject from a university the institute recognisesAt least 19
Ph.D. in DairyingA master's degree in the relevant subject with at least 60% marks or an OGPA of 6.60 out of 10.00, and 50% or 5.60 for SC, ST and PH candidatesAt least 20, with no upper limit

A second undergraduate door opened for the 2026-27 session. The institute invited applications for additional paid seats, 5 in each of the three B.Tech branches, still allotted strictly on CUET-UG (ICAR) merit and rank but carrying the paid-seat tuition, with candidates from a Biology background required to clear a bridge course in mathematics and no entitlement to the National Talent Scholarship. Applications closed on 23 August 2026 through an online form, and the provisional results against those seats went up on the academic notice board within the week. The institute invites and allots this quota itself rather than through the ICAR bulletin, so its own notice board is the only place it surfaces.

Cutoff

The merit list that decides a Karnal seat is not NDRI's to publish, so no cutoff rank appears on its pages. Undergraduate seats are filled from the national CUET (ICAR-UG) merit and allotted category-wise in ICAR's centralised counselling, which means the rank that closes a B.Tech branch is settled inside that round, for that category, in that year, and shows up afterwards in ICAR's allotment result. Two things sharpen what a candidate is aiming at. The sanctioned undergraduate intake is 41 seats spread across three B.Tech branches, a small target for a national pool; and because counselling is category-wise, the bar you clear is your own category's rather than one institute-wide number. Nothing published before a counselling round fixes that bar in advance, so a figure printed as the NDRI cutoff is a reconstruction of an earlier allotment rather than a threshold the institute has set.

Placements

A dairy technology degree points at a processing industry that hires, so campus recruitment counts for more at NDRI than at an agricultural university whose graduates mostly move into research or state service. Its NIRF 2025 return reports the last three graduating cohorts on both sides of the teaching programme, undergraduate and master's.

CohortGraduated in stipulated timePlacedMedian salary of placed graduatesWent to higher study
B.Tech, 2023-244937Rs 7,50,00012
B.Tech, 2022-234236Rs 6,50,0006
B.Tech, 2021-223628Rs 6,00,0008
Master's, 2023-2412982Rs 8,20,00047
Master's, 2022-23138119Rs 8,00,00019
Master's, 2021-22126113Rs 7,00,00013

Read the two halves against each other. The undergraduate median climbed from Rs 6,00,000 to Rs 7,50,000 across those three years, and in no year did fewer than three-quarters of the students who finished on time take a job. The master's side moved the other way in the most recent year: 47 of the 129 who finished left for higher study, up from 19 the year before, and the placed count fell to 82. That is a cohort choosing the doctorate and the research service, not a placement failure.

Who recruits is published too. The placement cell names Abbott Nutrition, Ananda Dairies, GCMMF, Mother Dairy (Delhi), Nestle India, Perfetti Van Melle India, Punjab Milk Federation, SPX Technologies and Tetra Pak India among past recruiters, a list weighted towards dairy processors and food multinationals rather than a generic campus milk-round. Its own last-published campus figures, for 2019-20, put the undergraduate maximum salary at about 7.18 lakh against an average of 5.04 lakh, and the postgraduate maximum at about 11.5 lakh against an average of 8.0 lakh. Those campus figures are four years older than the ranking data and have not been refreshed since, so treat them as a record of one pre-pandemic year rather than as what a batch earns today.

Seat Matrix

Intake at NDRI is small, and it is published in two places that describe it differently, so both are worth holding. The academic programme page gives standing bands: 30 to 50 B.Tech seats, 20 to 25 across the two diplomas, and 5 to 12 students in each discipline for the master's and doctoral programmes. What NDRI filed with the ranking framework is exact, and it shifts from one year to the next.

Sanctioned intake2023-242022-23
UG, 4-year programmes4140
PG, 2-year programmes137157

Reservation follows the ICAR pattern rather than a Haryana one, and domicile buys no advantage at all. The institute's own return shows what that produces on the ground: 117 of its 146 undergraduates and 234 of its 267 postgraduates come from outside the state, which is the opposite of a state agricultural university's profile. The undergraduate rules set 15% of seats for Scheduled Caste and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe candidates, interchangeable between the two where one is not filled, 5% horizontally for persons with benchmark disability and 2% horizontally for candidates from named remote and under-privileged states and union territories, with Central OBC (NCL) and EWS reservation applied as ICAR notifies it for the counselling year. Sitting outside that matrix are the 15 additional paid undergraduate seats offered for 2026-27.

Rankings

NDRI's standing is narrow and high. On the NIRF 2025 agriculture and allied sectors table it is ranked second with a score of 75.87, and it appears on no other NIRF 2025 table, with no university, overall or research placing published for it in the same round. Underneath the rank, the five parameters split along the line between what NDRI teaches and what it publishes.

Agriculture parameter, NIRF 2025Score
Graduation Outcomes85.77
Teaching, Learning and Resources82.63
Perception71.37
Outreach and Inclusivity68.20
Research and Professional Practice66.56

Graduation Outcomes at 85.77 is the strongest of the five, and it is the parameter an applicant should care about most, because it is built on whether students finish on time and what happens to them afterwards. Research and Professional Practice at 66.56 is the softest, which is the trade a single-commodity institute makes against a broad agricultural university publishing across every crop and discipline. The margins are worth seeing as well: the Indian Agricultural Research Institute leads the table on 89.23, while NDRI's 75.87 sits barely above Punjab Agricultural University's 75.83 in third. Second place here was decided by a hair.

Departments

The institute is organised by research division rather than by school or faculty, and the division is what a research student actually joins. The 13 divisions and sections group under the three areas the institute names as its work.

AreaDivisions and sections
Dairy productionAnimal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Biotechnology, Animal Physiology, Animal Nutrition, Animal Bio-chemistry, Livestock Production and Management, Forage Research
Dairy processingDairy Microbiology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Technology, Dairy Engineering
Dairy extension and managementDairy Economics, Statistics and Management, Dairy Extension

Alongside them the institute runs a National Referral Laboratory for Milk Quality and Safety and a Climate Resilient Livestock Research Centre, the referral laboratory built for standards development on milk and milk products. The division count and the count of taught disciplines are not the same number, which trips people up: research sits in 13 divisions, while the master's and doctoral degrees are awarded in 14 disciplines, several of them veterinary subjects taught across divisions.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus is the laboratory. Inside its 560 hectares sit the Artificial Breeding Research Centre, which keeps breeding bulls of the Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Karan Fries and Karan Swiss cattle breeds and the Murrah buffalo and runs the herd's insemination and frozen-semen work, laboratories for biotechnology, molecular biology, fermentation technology and protein chemistry, and the working dairy plant students are trained on. The Experimental Dairy was set up in 1961 to scale laboratory products to pilot production and to teach plant operation, and it still does both: it manufactures paneer, ghee, cheese, ice cream, khoa and skimmed milk powder, sells them through a milk parlour at the institute's main gate, and has run on a revolving fund since 1989-90.

Study support is unusually deep for a single-subject campus. The National Library on Dairying holds roughly 95,000 volumes, made up of about 56,000 books and standards, 34,000 bound periodicals, 5,000 theses and 3,600 discs, in a two-storey building of 1,914 square metres with reading halls seating 200 at a time and an air-conditioned computer section for 40. A Human Health Complex has served students and staff since 1991, with full-time doctors, a physiotherapy unit and a diagnostic laboratory. Distances here are farm distances, so a candidate who needs a ramp should read what NDRI has filed and then check the specific block: coverage of more than 80% is claimed for both ramps or lifts and accessible toilets, wheelchairs are kept, and students can be moved between buildings on request.

Hostel

Hostel accommodation is applied for separately each semester on the prescribed form, allotted by the warden on payment of the prescribed fee, and each resident is given a chair, table, cot, table-lamp and fittings they are then responsible for. Rooms are vacated during the summer break so the buildings can be cleaned and repaired, and a student who wants to stay through it has to ask. The institute's registration papers name the halls in use, Krishna, Narmada, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, Kaveri and Alaknanda, alongside an International Hostel and a Married Scholars Hostel, each with its own warden and contact number, and a Chief Hostel Warden over them. What is not published is the money: no room rent or mess charge appears on the institute's hostel pages, so the figure to work with is whichever the hostel office quotes for the hall and semester you are allotted.

Faculty

NDRI counts its teaching strength twice, and the two figures answer different questions. The ranking return lists 148 faculty members, which is the population that teaches courses and supervises theses. The institute separately describes a working strength of nearly 160 scientists and 185 technical staff against an annual budget of over Rs 215 crores, which is the research establishment the teaching sits inside. Both wings answer to a Director who is also Vice Chancellor of the deemed university, currently Dr Dheer Singh, with one Joint Director for research and another for academics.

For a doctoral candidate the load those scientists already carry matters more than the headcount. In 2023-24 the institute reported 69 sponsored projects funded by 23 agencies and worth Rs 87,97,85,500, and it carried 483 full-time doctoral scholars, 94 of whom completed the degree in that year alone. Your guide will be an ICAR scientist with a funded project and a share of the herd, so the division that would host your thesis decides the next three years far more than any institute-wide staff figure.

Notable Alumni

NDRI keeps no public roll of distinguished alumni, and a name earns a place here only when a public record ties the person to the institute, so the list stays short rather than borrowed. What the institute does document from its own past is a visit rather than a degree. In 1927, at the Bangalore institute that later became NDRI's Southern Regional Station, Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya spent two weeks being trained in modern cattle management, and Gandhi went on to write about scientific dairying in Young India and Harijan. On the institutional record, the placement cell's own account is that NDRI has been the main source of trained manpower for India's expanding dairy industry, and its recruiter list is the closest thing to a verified statement of where its graduates end up.

News & Articles

One page carries everything with a date on it. NDRI's academic notice board is where admission notices, date sheets, academic calendars and result declarations appear, and nothing is announced ahead of it. The items sitting there now are the paid-seat admission notice and its provisional results, a notice on direct admission to master's and doctoral programmes for candidates already holding a national-level fellowship, the academic calendar for newly admitted students, and the second-semester theory date sheets for the B.Tech, master's and Ph.D. programmes. Read a deadline off that board before you act on it, because a registration date or a fee due date quoted anywhere else is a copy of it at best.

College Compare

The institutions either side of NDRI on the NIRF agriculture table are the natural comparison, and what separates them is breadth. The Indian Agricultural Research Institute at 89.23 and Punjab Agricultural University at 75.83 both teach agriculture whole, across crop science, soil, horticulture and plant protection, and both run research and extension networks to match. NDRI teaches one commodity to a national intake, and its undergraduate degree is a dairy processing and engineering qualification rather than a general agriculture one.

That narrowness cuts both ways, and the honest reading depends on what you want. If your interest is milk, whether the processing side, the animal side or the economics of the dairy chain, the specialisation is the reason to choose it and the placement medians above follow from it. If you are not yet sure which part of agriculture you want, a broad agricultural university leaves more doors open than a campus whose every division is built around the same animal.

Contact & Location

The campus sits inside Karnal city in Haryana, at pin code 132001, on the Grand Trunk Road corridor between Delhi and Chandigarh. Visitors arriving for registration are directed to Gate No.1 near Agarsen Chowk from the G.T. Road side, or Gate No.3 near the NDRI Guest House from the railway station side, which is the practical detail nobody prints and everybody needs on the first morning.

Queries are handled office by office rather than through one desk. The university office runs separate lines for B.Tech students and for master's and Ph.D. students, with further numbers for the Chief Hostel Warden, security and the academic coordinator, while the Director, the Joint Directors, the Controller of Examinations and the heads of the Bengaluru and Kalyani stations each publish a direct email and phone number on the institute's contact page. The one thing Karnal cannot answer is the exam: the entrance paper belongs to the National Testing Agency and the counselling to ICAR, so a question about either starts on their portals.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

The quality marks NDRI carries are not the ones a general university carries. It has held deemed university status for its academic programmes since 1989, which is what lets it award its own degrees instead of affiliating to a state university, and it has been an ICAR institute since 1970. For accreditation it has filed a Self Study Report with the National Agricultural Education Accreditation Board, the ICAR board that accredits agricultural education. No NAAC grade appears anywhere on the institute's own site, and an applicant looking for one is looking for the wrong mark. On the operating side, its admission notices carry the ISO-9001:2008 certification mark, and the Experimental Dairy where its students train is certified under the Food Safety Management System ISO22000:2018.

Scholarships

At master's and doctoral level the money runs the other way. NDRI pays its research students by the month, and it publishes every rate.

National Talent ScholarshipRs 3,000 a monthUndergraduates admitted on ICAR merit who study outside their domicile state

The conditions are published as plainly as the amounts, and they bite. The National Talent Scholarship requires a student to join a university outside the domicile state, to keep the subject and seat allotted, and to hold an OGPA of 7.0 throughout the course. Master's and doctoral students keep the institute scholarship only by registering for every prescribed course each semester and by carrying 65% marks or a grade point average of 6.5 out of 10.0 from the previous one, and a student who accepts assistance from any other source loses it. Set the doctoral rate against the fee position and the arithmetic reverses, and a funded scholar at Karnal is paid to be there.

Voices

Student Reviews

A star score for a campus of this size would rest on a handful of anonymous posts, so none is published here. With 41 undergraduate seats a year, any rating that circulates under NDRI's name is drawn from a sample too small and too unchecked to mean anything, and no identity-verified survey of its students exists to replace it. The checkable record is the one the institute files itself, the graduating, placed and higher-study counts in the placements table above. Student posts are still worth reading for the texture of the place, the field days, the hostel routine and the weeks of plant training, as long as each stays one person's account rather than a measurement.
