Indian Agricultural Research Institute (krishi Pusha) New Delhi.

The Indian Agricultural Research Institute is the one place in the country where a master's degree in farming science is often just the runway to a doctorate. In the batch that finished its two-year postgraduate programmes in 2023-24, IARI's own ranking-framework return records 170 of 236 graduates leaving for higher study rather than a job. That single ratio tells you what IARI is: a research institute that happens to award degrees, not a college that happens to do research. It also holds the top spot on the National Institutional Ranking Framework's 2025 agriculture list, so if your future is in crop science, soil science, plant breeding or agricultural biotechnology, this is the address the field measures itself against.

Overview

Most people in Indian agriculture still call it the Pusa Institute, and the nickname carries its history. IARI was established in 1905 at Pusa in Bihar, moved to New Delhi in 1936 after the 1934 earthquake wrecked the original campus, and kept the Pusa name for its Delhi home. It became a deemed-to-be university in 1958, which is when it began awarding its own postgraduate and doctoral degrees, and it is financed and run by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research under the agriculture ministry.

The reason the institute matters beyond its campus is the wheat. IARI's rust-resistant and high-yielding varieties were central to the research that produced India's Green Revolution, and its plant-breeding programmes went on to give Indian farmers the Pusa Basmati rice lines that now dominate the country's aromatic-rice exports. For a prospective student, that lineage is not decoration. It is why the institute is organised around field research, why so much of the teaching happens on working experimental farms, and why the degree carries the weight it does with employers and other universities.

Courses & Fees

IARI is, at its core, a postgraduate and doctoral institution. Its degree-awarding Post Graduate School teaches the two-year M.Sc and M.Tech and the Ph.D, spread across a wide set of agricultural-science disciplines rather than a handful of broad departments. A student picks a discipline first, not a generic "agriculture" seat, and the whole programme is built around a research problem in that field.

DegreeDurationNature of study
M.Sc2 yearsCoursework plus a research thesis in one discipline
M.Tech (Agricultural Engineering, and allied)2 yearsCoursework plus a design or research project
Ph.DVariableOriginal research leading to a doctoral thesis

The disciplines run the length of the subject. On the crop-science side there is Genetics and Plant Breeding, Agronomy, Seed Science and Technology, and Plant Physiology; the protection sciences cover Entomology, Nematology and Plant Pathology; the resource and basic sciences include Soil Science, Agricultural Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics; and the applied side spans Horticulture, Vegetable Science, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Engineering. Undergraduate B.Sc and B.Tech degrees are a recent addition delivered under ICAR's national "Mega University" hub model rather than being the Delhi campus's historic business, and the institute's own submission shows 463 sanctioned undergraduate seats for 2023-24 against 323 postgraduate ones. If you are looking at IARI, you are almost certainly looking at a master's or a doctorate.

On money, IARI works like the government institution it is, not like a self-financed private university. Tuition for its M.Sc, M.Tech and Ph.D seats is heavily subsidised and sits far below what a comparable private programme charges, and the figure that actually governs what you pay is the academic-fee notification IARI publishes for each incoming session on its own admissions pages. More important than the tuition line is what offsets it: research scholars who qualify through the national exam are typically supported by an ICAR fellowship or assistantship for the length of the programme, so the real out-of-pocket cost for a funded student is far smaller than a fee table alone suggests. Because the exact fee and fellowship amounts are revised session to session, the binding numbers are the ones on the current admission notification rather than any figure carried by a third-party listing.

Admissions

There is no institute-specific entrance paper you sit at the Pusa gate. Admission to IARI's master's and doctoral seats runs through the national agricultural entrance system that the Indian Council of Agricultural Research uses, and the examinations themselves are conducted by the National Testing Agency. For the M.Sc and M.Tech, that is the ICAR All-India entrance examination for postgraduate admission, the exam long known as AIEEA-PG; for the Ph.D, entry runs through the ICAR doctoral and JRF/SRF selection route into the same Post Graduate School.

The practical sequence is worth spelling out, because working backwards from "I want an IARI degree" leads nowhere. You register for the relevant ICAR national exam in the discipline you want, you sit it, and your all-India rank in that discipline decides whether a seat at IARI is within reach. Seats are then allotted through centralised counselling against your rank, your category and your subject choice. IARI's admission office publishes the schedule, the eligibility for each discipline and the counselling calendar on its official site each cycle, and that notification, not a coaching blog, is the document to plan against.

Cutoff

IARI does not publish a single "cutoff rank" you can memorise, and any site that quotes one flat number is compressing something that does not compress. Entry is decided discipline by discipline on the national entrance rank, so the effective closing rank for Genetics and Plant Breeding in a given year has nothing to do with the one for, say, Agricultural Economics: each discipline has its own small seat count, its own applicant strength and its own reservation roster, and the bar moves every cycle with all three. The only reliable cutoff is the closing rank that appears in each discipline's counselling result for the year you are applying, published against the ICAR entrance merit list. Treat a headline "IARI cutoff" as a rough signal at best and read it against the specific discipline you want.

Placements

The honest headline on placements is that most IARI postgraduates are not chasing a campus job at all. In the most recent cohort in the institute's ranking-framework return, 236 students finished their two-year programme in the stipulated time, 170 went on to higher study, and only 27 took placement, at a median salary of Rs 6,96,000 a year. Read that the right way round: for the typical IARI master's student, the next step is a doctorate, an ICAR scientist selection, or a research post, not a recruitment week.

PG batch outcome (latest reported)Number
Graduated in stipulated time236
Went to higher study170
Took placement27
Median salary of placed graduatesRs 6,96,000

That pattern is consistent across batches: the earlier cohorts in the same return show 136 and 171 students moving to higher study in the two prior years. Where IARI graduates land is the agricultural-research economy itself, the ICAR institute network, the state agricultural universities, seed and agri-input companies, and public research bodies, and a doctorate from Pusa is one of the strongest entries into the Agricultural Research Service that the country offers. The thin placement column is not a weakness to explain away; it is the shape of an institute whose graduates are pointed at the ASRB scientist examination and the doctoral bench, not at a final-semester recruiter on campus.

Seat Matrix

IARI does not release one consolidated, category-wise seat matrix that stands for the whole institute, because intake is fixed discipline by discipline and only for the cycle in question. What the institute reports in aggregate is the sanctioned scale: its 2025 ranking-framework return records 323 sanctioned postgraduate seats and a total actual strength of 591 students across its two-year programmes, alongside 1,354 full-time doctoral scholars on its rolls. The number that governs a particular seat, though, is the discipline-wise intake printed in the current admission notification and the counselling seat matrix that follows it, which splits each discipline's seats across the general and reserved categories.

Rankings

IARI's rankings say something precise: it is the best agricultural institution in the country and a strong research university, measured that way rather than as an all-purpose campus. It takes the top rank in agriculture on a score of 89.23, and on the wider tables it comes 16th among universities on 62.89, 24th on the overall list on 61.59, and 29th among research institutions on 52.98.

NIRF 2025 categoryRankScore
Agriculture189.23
University1662.89
Overall2461.59
Research2952.98

The gap between the 89.23 it scores as an agriculture institution and its lower overall standing is the interesting part, and it is honest about what the institute is. Judged on its own field, IARI is untouchable; judged against medical, engineering and general universities on a single pooled scale, its narrow specialisation and a modest public-perception score pull the composite down. For anyone choosing IARI, the agriculture rank is the number that matters, and it is the one the institute earns cleanly.

Departments

Facilities & Infrastructure

The thing that makes IARI different from a lecture-hall university is that its main teaching instrument is land. The Pusa campus in central-west Delhi is a working research farm, with experimental plots, orchards, glasshouses and net-houses where breeding trials and field experiments run through the seasons, and a student's day is as likely to be spent on a plot as in a laboratory. Around the fields sit the specialist facilities the disciplines depend on: tissue-culture and molecular-biology laboratories for the biotechnology and plant-breeding work, a national gene bank and germplasm collections, soil and water analysis labs, and the phytotron and controlled-environment houses used to grow plants under fixed conditions. The institute also carries one of the country's deepest agricultural libraries and archives. For a research student, the value is access, the equipment and the field infrastructure here are of a scale most agricultural departments elsewhere cannot match.

Hostel

IARI is a residential research community by design, and postgraduate and doctoral scholars are ordinarily provided hostel accommodation on or beside the Pusa campus for the duration of their programme. Living in is part of how the place works, given that field experiments and laboratory schedules do not keep office hours. The exact hostel blocks, room arrangements, mess facilities and any charges are set by the institute and revised over time, so the reliable source for the current position is IARI's own hostel and admissions information rather than a general listing.

Faculty

The people who teach at IARI are, first, working scientists. The institute's ranking-framework return records 561 faculty members, and a thesis supervisor here is typically an ICAR scientist running an active research programme, a breeding line or a field-trial network, rather than a lecturer hired only to teach. That is the trade at the centre of the model: you are mentored by someone doing the science, and the scale of the research effort is real, with the institute reporting 242 sponsored research projects running in 2023-24. For a research degree, the quality of that supervision matters more than any lecture, and it is the reason to weigh a specific division and a specific scientist when you choose.

Notable Alumni

We name individuals only where the association is documented, and for a research institute a century old that runs to a long roll of agricultural scientists, so rather than publish an unverified list of famous names we point you to what is verifiable. IARI's record speaks through its work: its wheat-breeding programme was central to the Green Revolution research effort, and its varieties, from the rust-resistant wheats to the Pusa Basmati rice lines, are grown across Indian farmland today. Its doctoral graduates populate the ICAR institute system, the state agricultural universities and the country's agricultural research service. For the institute's own account of its scientists and their honours, its official site and annual reports are the traceable source.

News & Articles

IARI publishes its admission advertisements, entrance and counselling schedules, examination notices and result notifications on its own official website, and because the dates that matter to an applicant are tied to the national ICAR exam calendar run by the National Testing Agency, the reliable places to watch are the institute's admissions page and the ICAR exam portal rather than a third-party aggregator. Anything time-sensitive, a registration deadline, a counselling round, a fee-payment window, should be checked against the current official notification before you act on it.

College Compare

Students weighing IARI usually hold it against the other names at the top of Indian agricultural education, Punjab Agricultural University at Ludhiana, the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, the National Dairy Research Institute, or the ICAR deemed universities. The honest distinction is one of role. Many of those are large land-grant-style universities with big undergraduate populations and a state mandate; IARI is a research-first, postgraduate-heavy institute whose entire centre of gravity is the doctorate and the research division. Its first place on the NIRF agriculture list is the cleanest single comparison point, but the fairer way to choose between them is on the specific discipline you want, the strength of the division that owns it, and whether your aim is a broad agricultural education or a research career. For a master's or a Ph.D in a mainstream crop or resource science, IARI is difficult to better; for a rounded undergraduate agriculture degree close to home, a state agricultural university may fit you far more naturally.

Contact & Location

IARI's main campus is at Pusa in New Delhi, in the west-central part of the city, and it is the campus that handles the Post Graduate School, admissions and the bulk of the research divisions. Because admission, examination and fee queries are handled by specific offices, the Post Graduate School and the admissions cell, the authoritative contact points, along with the full postal address, phone numbers and the correct email for a given query, are the ones listed on the institute's official website. For anything to do with the national entrance exam itself, the ICAR and National Testing Agency portals are the right first stop.

Divisions and Schools at IARI

IARI groups its research and teaching into a set of schools, each pulling together the divisions that work on related problems. Rather than a scattering of departments, the map is built around the life of a crop, from improving it, to protecting it, to managing the soil and water it grows in, to getting it to a market.

SchoolWhat it covers
School of Crop ImprovementPlant breeding, genetics, seed science
School of Plant ProtectionEntomology, nematology, plant pathology
School of Basic SciencesBiochemistry, microbiology, plant physiology, bioinformatics
School of Natural Resource ManagementSoil science, agronomy, water and environment
School of Social SciencesAgricultural economics and extension
School of Horticultural ScienceFruit, vegetable and floriculture science

Underneath the schools sit the individual divisions that a student actually joins, and it is the division that owns a research problem, runs the experimental plots and supervises the thesis. Choosing IARI means choosing a division as much as an institute.
