A first semester of B.Pharm at the Central University of Punjab is billed at Rs 78,975. The M.Pharm, taught by the same department in the same building, asks Rs 29,975. Neither figure is a misprint. Bachelor's fees here are split across two annexures of one prospectus, one of them headed self finance, and that split is why a new four-year degree at CUP can cost more than twice what the master's above it does.

Overview

CUP is Punjab's only central university, created by an Act of Parliament, No 25 of 2009, and its territorial jurisdiction is the whole of the State of Punjab even though it has no constituent units or affiliated colleges under it. It opened in a camp office lent by the state administration in March 2009 and now works from a 500 acre campus at village Ghudda in Bathinda district, built to GRIHA-IV norms and certified ISO 9001:2015 for quality management and ISO 14001:2015 for environment management. Three other Punjab names sit close enough to cause mistakes, and none of them is this institution: Punjabi University at Patiala, Panjab University at Chandigarh and Punjab Agricultural University at Ludhiana, each with its own statute and its own admission route.

The shape of the place is postgraduate. Look at what it filed as sanctioned intake for the 2025 rankings and one row is filled in: PG two-year programmes, 1,269 seats for 2023-24. Every undergraduate row is blank. The application numbers say the same thing from the other end. In 2025-26 the university logged 289,587 applications for 1,264 master's seats, a demand ratio of 1:230, against 3,429 applications for 350 undergraduate seats and 992 for 217 doctoral seats.

That is the single most useful thing to know before applying. The undergraduate wing is new, small and still filling; the master's wing turns applicants away at a rate the undergraduate one comes nowhere near. Teaching runs across 31 departments under 11 schools of studies, and the university brought in the National Education Policy from the 2021-22 session.

The student body is not local, which surprises people who assume a state-named central university draws from its state. Of the 1,981 postgraduates counted in the 2025 return, 107 were from within Punjab, 1,856 from outside it and 18 from outside the country.

Courses & Fees

Which of those two sheets a degree lands on turns out to be a poor guide to what it costs. Annexure F covers three programmes and is headed self finance, while Annexure E covers the rest at ordinary rates, yet the priciest degree on the ordinary sheet still outprices the cheapest on the self-finance one.

B.S.-M.S. integrated, eight streams (5 years)15 eachCUET-UG, then NEET or JEE, then 10+2 meritRs 20,575

Two rows in that table belong to the same school and are worth reading together. B.Tech. Computer Science and Engineering is on the self-finance sheet at Rs 25,000 tuition plus a Rs 9,000 laboratory fee a semester; the dual-degree artificial intelligence programme next door is on the ordinary sheet at Rs 20,000 tuition with the same Rs 9,000 laboratory fee. The cheaper of the two engineering degrees is the one that ends in a master's.

Budget for the increase as well as the sticker. The annexure carries a plain instruction that there is a yearly increase of 5% in the total fee from second year onwards, which is why the printed later-semester figures climb rather than settle, and study tour, field visit and industrial visit costs are charged on top at actual expenditure.

Master's pricing runs the other way, and the gap is the story of this campus. The 2026-27 regular-seat sheet opens the first semester at Rs 5,875 for M.A. Hindi, Punjabi and the performing arts master's, Rs 16,475 for most M.A., M.Com. and library science programmes, Rs 20,475 for M.Sc. and M.A. Geography, Rs 20,975 for the LL.M., Rs 24,475 for M.Ed. and M.P.Ed., Rs 26,475 for the MBA and Rs 29,975 for M.Tech. and M.Pharm. Set that LL.M. figure of Rs 20,975 against the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) figure of Rs 36,975 and the pattern holds across the university: at CUP the postgraduate degree is the cheap one.

A separate paid-seat sheet exists for four master's groups, capped at a maximum of ten seats on a supernumerary basis except where AICTE, NCTE or PCI rules govern the programme, and money paid on a paid seat is not refunded at all. The 49 master's programmes together carry 1,434 seats.

One warning about where to look. The university's own fee page carries no fee table, only two payment links, so the annexures inside the two prospectus PDFs are the only published figures, and they are the ones to check against before paying.

Admissions

CUP sets no written entrance paper of its own. Undergraduate entry runs on CUET-UG, on NCET for the two integrated teacher-education degrees, and on NEET or JEE where the programme allows it, with half the seats in both engineering programmes set aside for CSAB-JoSAA counselling on a JEE score. Master's entry runs on CUET everywhere but one department: in computer science and technology 50% of the M.Tech. seats are filled through CCMT counselling, and only what CCMT leaves vacant goes back to the CUET list.

The step candidates miss is that the national test is not the application. CUP requires a separate online application to its own counselling, and a candidate who does not file it is not considered for admission at all. Registration and fee payment happen on the university's SAMARTH portal at cupcuet.samarth.edu.in.

The B.S.-M.S. programmes use an order of preference the rest of the university does not: CUET-UG score first, a valid NEET or IIT-JEE score second, and class 12 merit third. Two master's programmes also sit outside pure merit. M.A. Music (Vocal) and the MPA in Theatre are settled by an aptitude test of 100 marks, weighted 60% to practical work and 40% to a viva, taken by candidates shortlisted on the entrance examination.

The 2026-27 cycle ran long and ended in walk-in rounds, as the dates on the university's undergraduate admission page show.

The final row comes off a notice signed by the Controller of Examinations on 13.08.2026, which also promises a full refund to any waitlisted candidate who never got in. The on-spot rounds are where the entrance-test rule bends. At undergraduate level it held for the programmes under pressure: because vacancies were few and applicants many, only CUET-qualified candidates were considered for computer science, artificial intelligence and law in the first on-spot round. At master's level it did not, and the university said so on the notice itself, which opened the August round to various PG programmes without or with a CUET-2026 score. A late master's seat at CUP can be had with no entrance score at all.

Withdrawing has a published price. The refund ladder follows UGC guidelines and is printed in both prospectuses.

Even the top row is not quite whole: the university deducts 5% of the fees paid, up to a maximum of Rs 5,000, as processing charges. Two smaller clauses are worth reading before you travel. Several documents, including the CUET score card, the medical fitness certificate and the anti-ragging undertaking, are taken as originals and retained permanently by the university. And any dispute, court case or consumer case arising from admission falls in the jurisdiction of Bathinda city only.

Cutoff

CUP does not publish a cut-off notice. It publishes provisional merit lists with each selected candidate's normalised CUET score printed beside their name, so the working cut-off for any round is the last score on that round's list. Those lists are scans of signed paper rather than typed files, and the scanning is rough enough that a digit at the foot of a column can defeat you.

The first-round lists for 2026-27 give the honest range, and two of the three programmes below are scored on identical papers, CUET's English and General Test, which makes them directly comparable.

Programme, first list of 2026-27CUET papers countedHighest scoreLowest unreserved score legible on the scan
B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), 22.07.2026English and General Test372.47316.18

B.Tech. Computer Science and Engineering, 21.07.2026Physics, Mathematics and the best of one more581.483426.253

One qualification belongs on the law row. That list runs a place further than the figure above, to a thirtieth unreserved seat taken on open merit by a candidate whose own category is Scheduled Caste, at a score the scan smudges past reading and a fraction under the 316.18 it follows.

The law and hospitality rows sit on the same test and a long way apart. A score that would not reach the foot of the law list would have opened the hospitality list comfortably, so the university-level brand tells you very little about how hard any one seat is to get.

Reserved-category floors run far below the unreserved ones, and further below on the smaller programmes. In law the Scheduled Tribe block of the first list closed at 247.45 and the Scheduled Caste block at 257.59, against 316.18 at the bottom of the unreserved names. In computer science the only Scheduled Tribe name on the first list scored 228.477 while the unreserved block stopped at 426.253.

Later rounds fall, and law fell furthest. By its sixth list on 11.08.2026 the unreserved block had come down to 280.06, with a single Scheduled Caste seat filled at 218.22. If your score is short of the first list, the sixth is the one to plan for, and it lands in the second week of August.

Placements

Three sets of outcome numbers exist for this campus and the university filed all of them itself: a pharmacy return, a law return and a whole-university return for the 2025 rankings. They do not describe the same place, and any single average quoted elsewhere has flattened them together.

Cohort as filed, 2023-24Graduated in minimum timePlacedMedian salary of those placedHigher studies
Pharmacy, two-year master's4441Rs 4,00,0003
Law, two-year master's373Rs 11,80,0008
All two-year master's, whole university1,037120Rs 3,40,00040

The pharmacy row is the strongest number on this campus. 41 of 44 M.Pharm. graduates were recorded as placed, and the two years before it were 24 of 36 and 28 of 47, so it is a trend rather than one good year. The law row is the opposite: 3 of 37 placed, with 8 going on to further study, after 1 of 26 the year before and 3 of 29 the year before that. The Rs 11,80,000 median on that law row is a median of three salaries, so it should not be read as what a law graduate here earns.

The whole-university row is the one that reframes both. Across 1,037 master's graduates, 120 were placed and 40 went to higher study, which leaves most of the cohort in neither column. Placement is not what most students here are doing after graduation, and the university's own form is what says so.

What the placement cell publishes does not close that gap. Its list of recruited students gives employer, department and package but carries no year at any point, so it cannot be read as a record for any particular batch; the notices and activities tabs on the same page say only that they will be updated shortly. Its package column is headed per annum and is not filled that way throughout: most entries are yearly figures running from a Rs 1.44 lakh internship at a Mohali research firm up to a Rs 6.08 lakh assistant professorship at a private university in Dehradun, but a few are quoted per month instead, so the column cannot be read down one scale. Pharmaceutical research firms, a clinical research organisation and school teaching posts recur most. The one live listing is a campus round for Azim Premji Foundation open to 2026 postgraduates in the arts and sciences, with language proficiency in Hindi or Kannada required alongside English.

Seat Matrix

Undergraduate intake for 2026-27 is 500 seats in total, against the 350 undergraduate seats the university offered a year earlier, spread as 60 each on B.Pharm., B.Tech. computer science, the dual-degree artificial intelligence programme and B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), 50 each on the two integrated B.Ed. degrees, 40 on BBA hospitality and 15 on each of the eight B.S.-M.S. streams. Supernumerary seats sit on top of that where the Pharmacy Council, AICTE or the Bar Council of India allow them.

The sanctioned figure matters less than what was still empty in the third week of August. The vacancy sheet issued for the 17 August on-spot round shows where the pressure was and was not.

Master's vacancies as on 31 July tell the same story at ten times the scale. By then M.Pharm. in pharmacology and in pharmaceutical chemistry, M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.A. Music (Vocal) and MPA Theatre had filled completely, while M.A. Bharatiya Civilization Studies and M.A. Religious Studies together still carried 12 unreserved, 5 SC, 2 ST, 8 OBC and 3 EWS vacancies. Across that sheet the recurring shape is an unreserved column at zero beside reserved columns that are not: the LL.M. had no unreserved seat left while 5 SC, 1 ST, 2 OBC and 2 EWS seats stayed open, and psychology, political science and microbiology sat in the same position. A reserved-category candidate applying late has real odds here that an unreserved one does not.

Rankings

CUP holds three positions in the 2025 India Rankings and they disagree with each other by a wide margin.

Pharmacy is the entry that carries the university. Its research score of 62.66 is nearly double the 32.58 the university as a whole records, and its graduation outcomes line up with the placement filing behind it. Law is ranked but thin where it counts for a student. Its graduation outcomes score of 41.33 is the lowest any Punjab law school records in that table, and its perception score of 17.86 is under half Army Institute of Law's 36.06.

The university-category trajectory is worth one line because it is not a straight climb. The university's own record puts it at 95th in 2019, 87th in 2020, 84th in 2021, 81st in 2022, 100th in 2023 and 83rd in 2024, and the 2025 table places it 77th, its best position so far after a sharp dip two years earlier. It is absent from the overall and engineering tables despite now teaching engineering, which is what you would expect of programmes too new to have graduated a cohort.

Departments

The eleven schools are nothing like the same size, and the two that carry CUP's national rankings are among the smaller ones. The list below follows the departments the two 2026-27 prospectuses name under each school, and it runs longer than the 31 departments those same documents claim in their opening pages.

Alongside them sits the Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Centre of Studies in Indic Civilization and Religious Traditions, which teaches two of the master's programmes. The School of Legal Studies runs on a single department and carries the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), the LL.M. and the doctoral work behind both, so judging law teaching here means judging a small named group, which is done better by reading that department's faculty page than by reading the university's rank.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Follow the equipment money and the campus divides sharply by department. Laboratory instruments took Rs 1,91,28,643 of the 2023-24 capital budget; the library took Rs 48,72,456. Pharmacy claimed Rs 61,02,000 of that instrument spend on its own, while the law school's return enters zero against laboratory equipment in every year it filed, and Rs 1,36,914 on its library in 2023-24.

The library holds over 53,000 books and 38 print journals and subscribes to 8,231 full-text online journals through the e-Shodh Sindhu Consortium, running RFID self-issue with an open catalogue at opac.cup.edu.in. The computer centre carries around 160 workstations and backbone connectivity for more than 1000 nodes across the campus. A health centre with two medical officers appointed on a regular basis runs an OPD from 09:00 A.M. to 05:00 P.M. except Sundays and gazetted holidays, with medicines given free of cost, and an ambulance is kept on campus for referrals.

The infrastructure index sets a central herbarium, a green house and an animal house beside the ordinary blocks, and a museum whose holdings are regional rather than institutional: archaeological exhibits excavated from the Malwa region of Punjab, Harappan material among them. Disability access is the one question all three filings answer identically, and the form only lets them answer in bands: over 80% of buildings for lifts or ramps, the same band for specially designed toilets, with walking aids, wheelchairs and campus transport marked available.

Hostel

Residence is the line item most applicants forget, and at CUP it is also the one with the least certainty attached. There are two girls' hostels and two boys' hostels on campus, furnished with bed, mattress, study table, chair and almirah, with Wi-Fi, round-the-clock water and electricity, housekeeping and a common room with television. The charges are published in full, down to the refundable deposits.

Hostel charge, 2026-27GeneralSC and ST
Registration fee, non-refundableRs 1,000Rs 1,000
Hostel fee, first semesterRs 6,600Nil
Maintenance charges, non-refundableRs 2,000Rs 2,000
Hostel security, refundableRs 3,000Rs 3,000
Mess security, refundableRs 3,000Rs 3,000
Total due at admissionRs 15,600Rs 9,000
Each semester from the secondRs 8,600Rs 2,000

Food is in none of those figures. Mess charges are extra and billed at actual rates under the mess rules, so the annual number a family needs is the table above plus a mess bill the prospectus does not quantify.

The caveat matters more than the price. The prospectus states that hostel facility is limited, that a hostel place for a postgraduate student is allotted subject to availability and that students who do not get one must make their own arrangement for stay, with limited off-campus provision at a fee that varies with whichever nearby institution's hostel is used. Ghudda is a village address rather than a city one, so private rooms are not around the corner. Ask the Dean Students' Welfare office at dsw@cup.edu.in what allotment looked like last year for your programme before you accept a seat.

Faculty

Each 2025 return carries its own faculty count: 208 across the university, 14 in pharmacy, 8 in law. Set the pharmacy figure against the 88 master's students and 48 full-time doctoral scholars that department reported and the ratio is unusually favourable; set the law figure against its 71 master's students and 32 full-time doctoral scholars and it is tighter, on a school that has since added a five-year undergraduate degree.

Sponsored research more than doubled in value in a single year, and it did not land evenly. Against 46 projects in 2022-23, the university filed 53 for 2023-24 worth Rs 13,88,23,394 across 8 funding agencies, plus 22 consultancy jobs for 109 client organisations at Rs 90,05,921. Where it lands is the point. 9 of those sponsored projects and Rs 1,29,69,886 belong to pharmacy; law's whole share is 1 project worth Rs 4,50,000. Doctorates are the one thing the whole university produces at scale, 51 of them full-time in 2023-24, off rolls of 557 full-time and 14 part-time research scholars.

Publication output is the one figure the university runs a live counter for, and its two published versions disagree. The live counter on its home page reads an h-index of 130, 135021 citations and 4914 Scopus papers, while the prospectus printed for the same admission cycle still says 122, 125025 and 4561. Take the counter as current and the prospectus as a snapshot.

The officers are a matter of record. The university's Visitor page points at the President of India, and its public self-disclosure names Prof. Jagbir Singh as Chancellor, Prof. Raghavendra Prasad Tiwari as Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Kiran Hazarika as Pro Vice-Chancellor. One faculty recognition is worth naming: Prof. Raj Kumar of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Natural Products was selected for the 8th Visitor's Award 2023 for research in biological sciences, presented at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Notable Alumni

What CUP has in place of a distinguished-alumni page is an association, and the reason is partly arithmetic. The AACUP was set up in 2015-16 with approximately 100 members, was registered under the Societies Registration Act in 2018, and counted 1,500 registered members up to 2019-20, a roll the association describes as master's and doctoral students of a university that had then been teaching for a decade. Honouring distinguished alumni appears among its stated aims rather than as something it records having done.

The association does hold money. Its published corpus stands at Rs 21,23,655, which its constitution allows it to spend on scholarships, fellowships and medals for current students. What it does not publish is people: the achievements tab carries a single heading, for students qualifying in national examinations over the last five years, and no names under it, while the alumni-meets tab says it will be updated shortly. A candidate who wants to speak to a graduate of a particular programme will get further through that department's office than through the alumni page.

News & Articles

The part of this website that moves is the notice stream. Provisional merit lists for the undergraduate programmes went up on 17.07.2026, 21.07.2026, 22.07.2026, 23.07.2026, 28.07.2026 and 31.07.2026 and again through August, each superseding the last, and the most recent computer science entry on that page is dated 27.08.2026. Refresh it daily during a cycle. Aggregator pages carry the same lists later, and in a round whose fee window closes within days, that lag is the whole margin.

The rest of the site moves much more slowly, and the mismatch is easy to misread. The footer on the home page records that it was last updated on 14.10.2025 while the Scopus counter a few inches above it carries an August 2026 stamp, and the upcoming-events panel is still showing conferences held in February and March. Treat a static page here as undated unless it says otherwise, and take dates only from a signed notice.

Beyond admissions the events panel runs to research and legal training rather than industry outreach. It has carried a conference on nuclear energy and critical minerals, a short-term programme on methodology in legal research and an ICSSR-sponsored research methodology course. The recruitment column beside it is where the science shows, advertising project posts against ANRF-funded research and a breast cancer multiomics study.

College Compare

Punjab crowds its rankings, and CUP is nowhere near the top of any of them. The NIRF 2025 university table sets out the field it is competing in.

NIRF 2025 University category, PunjabRankScoreTeachingResearchPerception

Chitkara University, Rajpura7849.3248.2941.6732.17

Every Punjab institution ranked above CUP in that table is private or deemed except the agricultural university at Ludhiana. What CUP offers against them is a central university's fee structure, and the Rs 5,875 first semester on its cheapest master's is the shape of that difference.

In pharmacy CUP is the fifth Punjab name on the national list, behind NIPER Mohali at 9th with 70.96, Lovely Professional at 13th, Chandigarh University at 15th and Chitkara at 16th, with CUP itself 20th on 64.73. The argument for choosing CUP inside that group rests on the fee and on the placement filing rather than on the rank.

For law the table is less kind: Lovely Professional ranks 26th and Army Institute of Law, Mohali 37th, both ahead of CUP at 40th. A candidate weighing a five-year law degree in Punjab should ask each school for its own placement record rather than lean on the ranking gap, because CUP's own rank was earned on a master's cohort and says nothing yet about the B.A. LL.B.

The admission cell answers on working days, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and it is explicitly not the desk for subject questions. Departmental telephone numbers and email addresses are published separately in the university's own directory, so a question about seats or eligibility in one subject is better put to that department's head than to the admission cell.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

official-report

Both prospectus covers lead with NAAC A+. Behind that letter sits a CGPA of 3.30, valid from 28-02-2023 to 27-02-2028, awarded on the university's second accreditation cycle. The first-cycle and second-cycle certificates are both hosted on the university's site, so read the validity dates on whichever one you are shown.

Statutory recognition is a different thing from grading, and CUP publishes both. Its UGC recognition under sections 2(f) and 12B sits on the recognition page, and the accreditation and ranking page additionally lists ISO certification, an environment management system certificate and an STQC website quality certificate.

Council approval is a third thing again, and it is the one neither prospectus documents. The undergraduate book names the Bar Council of India, the Pharmacy Council of India and AICTE where it explains supernumerary seats; the postgraduate one names AICTE, NCTE and the Pharmacy Council where it caps paid seats. Neither annexes an approval order from any of them. Ask the School of Legal Studies or the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Natural Products for the order that covers your year of entry, since a prospectus intake and a sanctioned intake are not always the same figure.

The largest piece of money here is not a scholarship at all. Count the postgraduates the 2025 return puts under its economically backward and socially challenged headings, 179 and 1,081, then follow who actually paid: 393 had tuition reimbursed in full by state and central government funds, 565 by the university's own funds and 302 by neither. More of that bill falls on the university's own budget than on the government schemes, and a candidate counting on a state scheme should plan for the possibility of landing in the last of those groups.

How far the support reaches depends sharply on the department. In pharmacy all 57 eligible students had full government reimbursement. In law only 9 did, with 29 covered by university funds and 7 covered by neither.

The hostel is where a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe student sees the difference in cash. The semester hostel fee is waived entirely for them, which brings the amount due at admission from Rs 15,600 down to Rs 9,000 and the charge from the second semester onward from Rs 8,600 down to Rs 2,000.

Three university-run routes sit alongside that, all described in the prospectus rather than on a scholarship page. The Students Financial Assistance Fund makes grants and interest-free loans against parental income and family size, conditional on at least 75% attendance, good standing and no disciplinary proceedings. An Earn-While-You-Learn scheme pays for campus work. Education loans run through PM Vidyalakshmi, whose guidelines cover 860 higher education institutions. Fee, scholarship and fellowship queries go to the Academic Branch at academic.section@cup.edu.in.

Student Reviews

Any single rating for CUP has to average two people who are not on the same terms, and the pharmacy department holds both. One is an M.Pharm. student whose fee was reimbursed in full, among the 57 the university reported in that position. The other is a first-year B.Pharm. student down the same corridor paying Rs 78,975 for a first semester out of pocket. A decimal that covers both describes neither, which is why none is printed here.

Put specific questions to a current student instead. Did they get a hostel room, and in which week, given that the prospectus promises nothing on that. Which round of the merit list admitted them, since arriving on the sixth list and arriving on the first are different experiences of the same campus. And what has their own department arranged for its graduates in the last two years, given that the university-level placement list carries no year at all.
