Chitkara University, Patiala
Chitkara University Punjab appears on five separate NIRF 2025 lists, and its strongest result is the one its marketing leads with least: pharmacy, at rank 16 in the country. The campus that earns those ranks stands at Rajpura, on the Chandigarh to Patiala highway, and not in Patiala city. It is also a different institution from the Chitkara University that runs in Himachal Pradesh under its own website, which is why a fee or a rank picked up from a search result can belong to the wrong campus. What the university filed with the Ministry of Education for those rankings puts hard numbers on the things a brochure rounds off.
Overview
Chitkara University is a private state university created in 2010, when the Punjab State Legislature passed The Chitkara University Act. It teaches from a campus on the Chandigarh to Patiala National Highway that the university itself places 30 km from Chandigarh, listed by the Ministry of Education's ranking tables under the city of Rajpura, Punjab, in Patiala district. Degree-granting authority comes through Sections 2(f) and 22(1) of the UGC Act, and the university also holds UGC 12(B) status.
The student body is unusually skewed away from its own state. In the university's NIRF 2025 return, 8,840 of the 11,510 students in its four-year undergraduate programmes came from outside Punjab, with 2,475 from within it, and the three-year undergraduate cohort splits the same way, 2,575 from outside against 775 from inside. For most people reading this, Chitkara is a place you move to, which makes the residential cost and the distance from home part of the decision rather than a footnote to it.
Two Chitkara universities exist, and they are separate legal entities on separate campuses. The Punjab one is at Rajpura, and every rank, fee and placement figure below belongs to it, the institution the ministry lists as IR-O-U-0373. The other publishes its address as the Pinjore to Barotiwala National Highway (NH-105), Himachal Pradesh 174 103, on its own domain.
Courses & Fees
Fees at Chitkara are published per programme and per semester, and the spread is wide enough that a single university-wide figure would mislead. The cheapest published semester charge is Rs 1,00,000 and the dearest is Rs 2,47,500, on two degrees that both run four years.
| Programme | Length | Published fee by semester |
|---|---|---|
| B.E. Computer Science and Engineering | 8 semesters | Rs 1,55,000 for semesters 1 and 2, Rs 1,50,000 for 3 and 4, Rs 1,65,000 for 5 to 8 |
| B.E. CSE in AI and Future Technologies | 8 semesters | Rs 2,30,000 for semesters 1 and 2, Rs 2,25,000 for 3 and 4, Rs 2,47,500 for 5 to 8 |
| B.Pharm | 8 semesters | Rs 1,05,000 for semesters 1 and 2, Rs 1,00,000 for 3 to 8 |
| Pharm.D | 12 semesters | Rs 1,25,000 for semesters 1 and 2, Rs 1,32,000 for 3 to 12 |
| B.Arch | 10 semesters | Rs 1,05,000 for semesters 1 and 2, Rs 1,00,000 for 3 to 10 |
| B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) | 10 semesters | Rs 1,05,000 for semesters 1 and 2, Rs 1,00,000 for 3 to 10 |
| MBA in marketing, finance, HR or data science and AI | 4 semesters | Rs 2,25,000 a semester |
| MBA in healthcare, logistics or rural management | 4 semesters | Rs 1,75,000 a semester |
| MBA in retail, pharmaceutical management or BFSI | 2 years | Rs 1,65,000 a year |
| Sources: Chitkara University programme pages for computer science, CSE in AI and future technologies, B.Pharm, Pharm.D, B.Arch and B.A. LL.B., and the MBA fee structure for 2026. |
Read the first two semesters carefully, because they carry charges the later ones do not. On the undergraduate programmes an extra Rs 25,000 falls in semester 1 for Educational Technology Services and another Rs 25,000 in semester 2 for Career Advancement Services, while on the MBA the same two heads are Rs 50,000 each. The university also states that the published fee is subject to revision, so the figure that governs your year is the one showing on your own programme's page when you accept the offer.
A separate line item catches applicants out. The application form itself costs Rs 1,100, whether bought at a university office, from a bookstore or by post, and the MBA fee document also records that a student is admitted only once the full fee reaches the university within a week of the offer letter.
Admissions
There is no one entrance test that opens every door here. Each school runs its own route, and the national exam that matters depends entirely on the degree you want.
| Programme | Entrance route | Academic requirement |
|---|---|---|
| B.E. | JEE Main 2026 All India Rank, or a higher board percentage without it | 60% aggregate or 60% in physics, chemistry and mathematics with JEE Main; 70% without |
| B.Arch | NATA qualification is compulsory | 10+2 with physics and mathematics plus one listed subject at 45% aggregate, or a 10+3 diploma with mathematics at 45% |
| B.Pharm | Personal interview | Class 12 with 50% aggregate, physics and chemistry with biology or mathematics |
| Pharm.D | No entrance test stated on the programme page | Class 12 with 60% aggregate in the medical or non-medical stream |
| B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) | No entrance test stated on the programme page | 50% aggregate in the higher secondary examination, Indian national schooled in India for the preceding two years |
| MBA | CAT, MAT, NMAT, XAT or CMAT merit, then group discussion and interview; otherwise the Chitkara University Test with the same discussion and interview | Bachelor's degree with 50% aggregate |
| Sources: the B.E., B.Arch, B.Pharm, Pharm.D and law programme pages, and the MBA admission document. |
The engineering rule needs one caution, because the university states it two ways on the same page. The eligibility panel offers the two routes above, one with a JEE Main appearance and one on a stronger board result alone, while the frequently asked questions further down say that a valid JEE Main 2026 score is mandatory for all B.E. applicants regardless of specialisation. Sit JEE Main if you can, and put the question to the admissions office in writing before you rely on the board-marks route.
Diploma holders can enter a B.E. by lateral entry, though the university notes that lateral entry intake is limited and admission depends on seats being available. Applicants also have to clear the AICTE floor, which the university states as a minimum age of 17 with physics, chemistry and mathematics compulsory in class 12.
Cutoff
No closing rank exists for Chitkara, and that is a structural fact rather than a gap in disclosure. The university admits on its own criteria instead of drawing from JoSAA, CSAB or a state counselling pool, so no seat here is allotted against a published rank in a common merit list. Asked directly about an engineering threshold, the university answers that no fixed cut-off is declared, that cut-offs vary each year with seat availability and the number of applicants, and that a higher JEE score improves the chance of admission.
What you can plan against are the qualifying marks in the admissions table above, and for B.Arch the NATA qualification, which is pass or fail rather than a rank. A branch-wise closing rank for Chitkara on an aggregator's page is therefore that aggregator's own arithmetic on self-reported data, not something the university has ever published.
Placements
The university's own filings are the only placement figures here that carry a government paper trail, and they show a wide gap between programmes. Each row below is the 2023-24 graduating cohort as reported in the relevant NIRF 2025 data submission.
| 2023-24 cohort | Graduated on time | Placed | Median salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four-year UG, university filing | 2,351 | 1,712 | Rs 8,50,000 |
| Four-year B.E., engineering filing | 1,999 | 598 | Rs 6,75,000 |
| Two-year PG, university filing | 1,112 | 967 | Rs 7,75,000 |
| MBA, management filing | 694 | 347 | Rs 9,62,000 |
| B.Pharm, pharmacy filing | 88 | 10 | Rs 7,50,000 |
| B.Arch, architecture filing | 94 | 44 | Rs 7,30,000 |
| Sources: NIRF 2025 data submissions for university, engineering, management, pharmacy and architecture. |
Two of those rows describe overlapping groups and do not agree with each other. Engineering supplies 1,999 of the 2,351 four-year undergraduates in the university filing, yet the engineering filing records 598 placed where the university filing records 1,712. The five-year cohort tells the same story in miniature, with 94 graduates and 76 placed in the university return against the same 94 and 44 placed in the architecture return. Both versions are the institution's own submissions to the same ranking exercise for the same year, so no single university-wide placement percentage can be quoted honestly from them.
Set that against the marketing. The engineering programme page claims the university consistently achieves 95% and higher placement rates across engineering branches, while its engineering filing for the most recent completed batch reports 598 placed and 402 going on to higher studies out of 1,999. Pharmacy deserves the same scrutiny in the opposite direction, since the filing records 10 placements from 88 B.Pharm graduates, with 20 more entering higher study at a school the government ranks 16th in the country. If placement decides this for you, ask the specific department for its own cohort numbers and compare them with the filing rather than with the homepage.
Seat Matrix
Sanctioned intake is published by programme band in each NIRF filing, and the scarcity sits exactly where the ranking is strongest.
| Filing | Programme band | Sanctioned intake, 2023-24 |
|---|---|---|
| University | UG three-year | 1,430 |
| University | UG four-year | 3,240 |
| University | UG five-year | 360 |
| University | PG two-year | 1,500 |
| Engineering | B.E., four-year | 2,670 |
| Management | MBA, two-year | 960 |
| Pharmacy | B.Pharm, four-year | 100 |
| Pharmacy | M.Pharm, two-year | 60 |
| Pharmacy | Pharm.D, six-year | 30 |
| Architecture | B.Arch, five-year | 120 |
| Sources: the university, engineering, management, pharmacy and architecture submissions. |
The two best-ranked programmes are also the two smallest, with a B.Pharm intake of 100 and a B.Arch intake of 120. Engineering runs at an entirely different scale, at 2,670 sanctioned places, which is worth holding in mind whenever you read a campus-wide statistic and assume it describes your own year group.
Rankings
NIRF 2025 placed Chitkara in five categories, and the shape of the profile matters more than any single number.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Pharmacy | 16 | 66.85 |
| Architecture | 38 | 48.16 |
| Management | 78 | 48.30 |
| University | 78 | 49.32 |
| Engineering | 89 | 47.34 |
| Every row above is read off the Ministry of Education's own NIRF 2025 table for that category: pharmacy, architecture, management, university, engineering. |
Pharmacy is by a clear margin the strongest of the five, and its parameter scores explain why.
| Pharmacy parameter, NIRF 2025 | Score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, learning and resources | 77.26 |
| Research and professional practice | 73.65 |
| Outreach and inclusivity | 71.29 |
| Graduation outcomes | 57.95 |
| Perception | 28.50 |
The pharmacy result rests on staff, laboratories and published research rather than reputation, since perception scores 28.50 against 77.26 for teaching and resources. Within Punjab that leaves Chitkara third for the subject, behind Lovely Professional University at 13 and Chandigarh University at 15, with all three inside the national top 16. On the general university table its rank of 78 puts it sixth among the Punjab entries, behind Chandigarh University at 19, Thapar at 26, Lovely Professional at 31, Punjab Agricultural University at 64 and Central University of Punjab at 77.
One caveat on rankings, because the university's homepage headline invites it. The "ranked No. 1 in India" banner carries a footnote saying it refers to the Times Higher Education Subject Rankings 2026 for education studies, with a rank of 5 in India for engineering in the same tables. Neither claim describes the government's NIRF result, where engineering is the weakest of the five categories above.
Departments
Teaching is organised into named institutions, each with its own admission criteria and its own fee table, which is why the figures above vary so widely. The institutions Chitkara lists are:
- Chitkara University Institute of Engineering and Technology
- Chitkara Business School, and Chitkara College of Sales and Marketing
- Chitkara College of Pharmacy
- Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture, and Chitkara Design School
- Chitkara Law School
- Chitkara School of Health Sciences
- Chitkara University School of Maritime Studies
- Chitkara College of Hospitality Management, and Chitkara School of Hospitality with NCHMCT
- Chitkara School of Mass Communication
- Chitkara School of Psychology and Counselling
- Department of Education, Chitkara University
- Chitkara Centre for Global Education, and Chitkara International College
- Chitkara University Centre for Distance and Online Education
The scale gap between them is severe. The engineering institute's own filing counts 8,340 students across its four-year programmes; the pharmacy college, which carries the university's best national rank, counts 383 across its four-year programme. Whichever of these names ends up on your offer letter is the one whose fee table, sanctioned intake and placement filing actually govern your years here, and as the sections above show, the discipline filings do not all tell the same story.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The library is the part of the campus Chitkara quantifies most openly, at more than 1,07,718 books and 75,590 e-journals plus 711 masters and doctoral theses, with IEEE, Springer and Elsevier databases and RFID issue. Its laboratories are listed down to the licensed software each one runs: MATLAB simulation and computational labs, a microelectronics lab on Cadence, VLSI on Xilinx, a microprocessor lab on Keil, an embedded systems lab and CAD and CAM work in mechanical engineering. That level of naming is unusual, and it is the kind of detail worth matching against the specific lab your own branch would use.
Sport is properly provisioned rather than nominal, with athletics, basketball, cricket, football, tennis, pickleball and volleyball outdoors, and badminton, table tennis, a gymnasium, a running track and swimming. The accessibility and sustainability answers in the NIRF filing are ticked rather than described: lifts or ramps and purpose-built toilets in more than 80% of buildings, walking aids and transport between blocks, rooftop and surface-runoff rainwater harvesting with percolation pits and recharge wells, solar panels, and a ban on single-use straws, cutlery and plates.
Hostel
Chitkara is a residential campus with separate residences for men and women, wardens on site, security, internet access and common rooms with televisions and indoor games, as its campus infrastructure page describes them. With 8,840 of 11,510 four-year undergraduates coming from outside Punjab, a residence is not an optional extra for most students here but a cost that runs alongside tuition for the whole degree.
What the university does not attach to any of that description is a price. Every programme fee table on chitkara.edu.in stops at the semester tuition plus the two service charges, the 2026 MBA fee document covers the same ground and no more, and no room or mess tariff appears on the site at all. Get that number from the admissions office in writing, by room category, for your intake year, before you turn a semester fee into an annual budget.
Faculty
Faculty strength is filed category by category rather than as one headcount, and the split shows where the teaching weight sits. The university return enters 979 faculty members, of which the engineering filing accounts for 519, management for 86, pharmacy for 59 and architecture for 33.
Doctoral registration leans more part-time than full-time. Enrolment to 2023-24 stands at 405 full-time and 467 part-time candidates, and the year closed with 59 full-time and 47 part-time completions. Externally funded work is the thinner half of that picture and it is shrinking: 16 sponsored projects across 13 funding agencies in 2023-24, against 72 projects and 58 agencies two years earlier. Where the intensity does sit is pharmacy, which carries 111 full-time doctoral students against a faculty of 59 where engineering carries 125 against 519.
Notable Alumni
Chitkara keeps a public honorary doctorates page and announces each conferment, most recently a Doctor of Literature honoris causa. An honorary degree makes nobody an alumnus, though, and the university publishes no roll that ties a named graduate to a degree and a year the way this section would need. Nothing is put here to fill that space.
News & Articles
The university's own news feed is where its announcements land first, and what it chooses to lead with is itself informative: a recognition in BW Businessworld's India's Top Engineering Colleges 2026 rankings, an industry agreement with Applus+, an honorary Doctor of Literature, rather than any of the five NIRF placings this page is built on. Its own events calendar carries WECON 2026 in October and the 17th Global Week the week after. Application windows, fee revisions and the accreditation renewal due in September 2026 will show on chitkara.edu.in before an aggregator picks them up, and none of it is syndicated.
College Compare
Chitkara's case rests on one discipline, and that is the honest way to compare it. Against the Punjab universities candidates usually weigh it with, its pharmacy standing is close to Chandigarh University at 15 and Lovely Professional at 13, while its university rank of 78 sits well behind Chandigarh University at 19, Thapar at 26 and Lovely Professional at 31 on the same table. Panjab University, the public university in Chandigarh that shares part of the name, ranks 3rd nationally in pharmacy and 35th among universities, at a fraction of the fee.
Which is why the only comparison worth running on Chitkara is one degree against the same degree. Line up the NIRF rank in your discipline, the published semester fee, the sanctioned intake for that exact programme, and the placement numbers from that department's own filing rather than the university's. Do it on engineering and the result is uncomfortable: rank 89 is Chitkara's weakest of the five, while the AI specialisation inside that same faculty charges its highest fee anywhere, Rs 2,47,500 a semester.

Two of those rows are easy to confuse. The teaching campus is on the highway between Chandigarh and Patiala, inside neither city, and the university puts it 30 km out of Chandigarh; the Elante Mall unit is where application forms are sold and admissions paperwork is received, and no class is taught there. Check the highway address on a map before you plan a visit or cost a weekly commute.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
NAAC has graded Chitkara A+ at a CGPA of 3.26 on a 4-point scale, which the university says places it among the 5% of Indian higher education institutions holding that grade. The date attached to it matters more than the letter right now. The NIRF filing puts the accreditation's validity at 07-09-2021 to 06-09-2026, which runs out inside the 2026 admission season, so ask the admissions office whether a fresh assessment has been recorded before you weigh the grade at all.
Programme-level approvals matter more than the institutional grade when the degree is a regulated one, and Chitkara lists them individually. The B.Arch is approved by the Council of Architecture, the B.Pharm by the Pharmacy Council of India, the B.Ed by the National Council for Teacher Education and the B.Sc Nursing by the Indian Nursing Council, the law school holds Bar Council of India recognition, hospitality runs with National Council for Hotel Management approval, and the maritime school carries Directorate General of Shipping approval as MTI No. 106025. The online MBA is separately approved by AICTE and the UGC Distance Education Bureau. Check the approval attached to your own degree, because each regulator grants and renews on its own cycle, and the institutional A+ says nothing about whether a particular programme still holds its council's sanction.
Aid
Scholarships
Chitkara does not run a merit scholarship of its own, and it says so plainly. Asked whether merit awards exist for engineering students, the university answers that merit-based scholarships are currently not available for engineering students and that it offers no specific fee waiver for economically weaker students, though it will help assemble the documents a bank needs for an education loan. Its scholarship page lists no internal award at all, only routes into external schemes: the Punjab post-matric portal for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class students, the National Scholarship Portal for minority and central sector awards, and the Jharkhand and Bihar post-matric portals for students from those states.
That is not the same as saying nobody gets help. The NIRF return shows the reimbursement machinery working at scale: of the 1,115 socially challenged students in four-year undergraduate programmes, 1,082 received full tuition fee reimbursement from institution funds, 4 from government funds and 29 received none, and the three-year undergraduate group shows 684 of 698 in the same institution-funded column. Category-based reimbursement, routed through the university, is the real relief on offer here. If you fall outside those categories, budget for the sticker fee.

Student Reviews
No star rating for Chitkara appears here. A Google review score surfaces in the search results for the university, but it aggregates visitors, applicants and alumni without distinguishing between them or naming a programme, and a campus whose own filings put a pharmacy cohort of a few hundred beside an engineering enrolment in the thousands cannot be described by one average. The two Chitkara universities also share enough of a name that a rating you find is worth checking against the campus it was written about. Ask the institution that would actually teach you to put you in touch with a current student in that school instead.
Campus
Gallery
No photographs of the Rajpura campus are shown. Chitkara publishes a large image library of its own buildings, laboratories and residences, all of it under the university's copyright with no reuse licence, and a stock frame of an anonymous glass academic block would tell you nothing about the site on the Chandigarh to Patiala highway. Its campus infrastructure page is the honest place to look until licensed pictures of this campus exist.
