Punjabi University, Patiala
Punjabi University received 32,451 eligible applications against 7,630 available seats in the year it last reported to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. There is no single test that gets you in. The entrance route changes from one numbered application form to the next: some programmes go on the marks of your qualifying examination, a short list runs the university's own written test, engineering splits into two routes across neighbouring departments, and the two law bachelor's degrees are handed to a Punjab state counselling portal altogether. Working out which form you are is most of the job.
Overview
The Punjab Assembly created the university under Punjab Act No. 35 of 1961, and it was established on April 30, 1962, with Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, then President of India, laying its foundation that June. The prospectus records what makes the founding unusual: this was the second university in the world named after a language, after the Hebrew University of Israel, and its statutory purpose is the advancement of Punjabi studies and the development of Punjabi as a medium of instruction. That mandate is not decorative. Punjabi is a compulsory subject at undergraduate level across programmes, several postgraduate courses let a student answer examinations in Punjabi, and doctoral theses in most subjects may be submitted in the language.
It opened with jurisdiction over a radius of 16 km and nine affiliated colleges, moved onto its present campus in 1965, and now teaches nine districts of Punjab through its own departments plus a spread of centres in smaller towns such as Talwandi Sabo, Rampura Phul and Bathinda.

The campus size is the one figure the university's own documents cannot agree on. The same prospectus credits the place with 23 granted patents and collaborations with 14 international institutions. Guru Gobind Singh Bhawan, whose foundation stone Dr. Zakir Hussain laid on December 27, 1967, is the building the university uses as its own landmark.
Courses & Fees
The catalogue is unusually wide: 133 programmes across 62 departments in 2023-24, running from M.A. Gurmat Sangeet and a diploma in Gatka through to M.Tech in transportation engineering.
Fees are set per semester, per programme, and the spread inside one gate is enormous: Rs 8,510 for the first semester of a five-year integrated language degree against Rs 1,31,785 for the six-year integrated B.Tech-MBA.
| Programme | 1st semester fee | 2nd semester fee |
|---|---|---|
| Five-year integrated UG-PG (Honours with Research), language subjects | Rs 8,510 | Rs 8,505 |
| M.A. (Honours), most arts and social science subjects | Rs 8,980 | Rs 8,975 |
| LL.B. (3 years) | Rs 9,310 | Rs 9,310 |
| LL.M. (2 years) | Rs 10,380 | Rs 10,380 |
| M.Sc. (Honours), Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Zoology | Rs 12,440 | Rs 12,440 |
| M.Pharmacy | Rs 30,605 | Rs 30,605 |
| BCA (Honours with Research) | Rs 33,495 | Rs 33,495 |
| B.Pharmacy (4 years) | Rs 44,130 | Rs 44,125 |
| MBA (2 years) | Rs 49,885 | Rs 49,880 |
| MCA | Rs 50,925 | Rs 50,925 |
| B.Tech, first year | Rs 59,670 | Rs 59,670 |
| LL.M. (1 year, second shift) | Rs 60,875 | Rs 60,870 |
| Master of Physiotherapy | Rs 74,390 | Rs 74,390 |
Two of the master's programmes are charged as a single lump sum covering both semesters rather than per semester: the MBA Dual Degree at Rs 2,89,000 and MBA International Business at Rs 2,90,575. A refundable security is collected from every student on top of the figures above.
Admissions
The admission portal sorts every programme into categories, and the category, not the department, decides what you prepare for. One group is admitted on the merit of the qualifying class with no entrance test at all; a second is admitted on the merit of an entrance test the university sets and marks itself; engineering forms its own group; and a few programmes are filled by an outside agency.
You apply against a numbered form rather than a course name, and the number is the first thing to fix. Form No. 1 covers general postgraduate, PG diploma, certificate and diploma courses, Form No. 2 the bachelor's and five-year integrated degrees, Form No. 13 the MBA, Form No. 18 the four-year B.Tech, Form No. 33 the MCA, Form No. 36 B.Pharmacy, Form No. 32 BCA, Form No. 31 the integrated commerce and management programmes, Form No. 10 the LL.M., Form No. 5 the MPT and Form No. 35 the ITEP teaching degrees. Getting the number wrong is expensive to undo: the admission cell will switch a form only when the two course types carry the same fee and only before the entrance test or counselling date, and otherwise you register, pay and apply again on the right one.
The programmes that require the university's own written test, per the 2026-27 admission portal, are B.Pharmacy, BCA (Honours), the four-year B.Com (Honours), the five-year integrated M.Com and MBA programmes, Master of Physiotherapy, LL.M., and the Ph.D. in seven named subjects: civil, computer science, electronics and communication and mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, physiotherapy, and microbial and food technology. Doctoral candidates in every other subject enter on a national test such as NET, GATE or GPAT instead of a university one.
Everything else in the postgraduate list, including the two-year MBA, MCA, M.Ed. and M.Pharmacy, is filled without an entrance test. That does not make the MBA a formality. The bar to apply is 50% in the bachelor's or master's degree, relaxed to 45% for SC and ST candidates, with no CAT, CMAT or NMAT score called for, but the prospectus then decides the flagship two-year intake on the qualifying examination together with a group discussion and a personal interview, and the Dual Degree and International Business intakes on the group discussion and interview alone. Merit for the rest of the postgraduate list is built in a way that catches applicants out: candidates are ranked on the marks of every semester of the qualifying degree except the final one, against a written undertaking that the seat stands cancelled if that last semester is not cleared before the first postgraduate examination.
Engineering runs on two tracks at once. The 200 seats in the main campus's B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering are filled on the basis of JEE Main 2026, while civil, mechanical, electronics and communication, and electronics and computer engineering are filled directly on class 12 merit, needing physics and mathematics plus one listed science or technical subject at an aggregate of 45%, or 40% for SC, ST and disabled candidates. For M.Tech the form has to be submitted whether or not you hold a GATE score, and GATE-qualified candidates are then given preference over those who sat the university's test.
Two routes leave the university's hands entirely. LL.B., B.A. LL.B. and B.Ed. seats are allotted through Punjab's state-level online counselling rather than by the university, and the four-year integrated teacher education programmes are filled on the merit of NCET, conducted by the National Testing Agency.
B.Pharmacy is worth reading separately, because the entrance score is not counted flat. The prospectus builds the merit from the marks in physics, chemistry, biology or mathematics and English taken together, and one per cent of the marks secured in the entrance examination is added for a candidate who lives in a rural area of Punjab and passed both class 10 and class 12 from a rural school there, with a residence certificate from the Tehsildar and a school certificate to prove it.
Cutoff
There is no campus-wide cutoff here, and no published expected-marks table to prepare against. What the university does release, programme by programme as counselling runs, is the merit list itself, with each candidate's marks printed next to their category. The first LL.M. list of the 2026-27 session shows how far down the marks reached for the two-year programme in the Law Department.
| LL.M. (2 years) category, 2026-27 first list | Top marks | Lowest in the list |
|---|---|---|
| General, Punjab 85% quota | 80 | 63 |
| General, other states 15% quota | 80 | 68 |
| Backward Classes, Punjab 85% quota | 61 | 55 |
| SC and ST, Punjab 85% quota | 60 | 52 |
| Person with disability | 44 | 44 |
| Ex-serviceman dependent | 41 | 41 |
| Wards of regular university employees | 37 | 37 |
| Single girl child | 34 | 34 |
Two things follow from that list. The reserved and additional categories reached far lower than the general one in the same room, down to 34 marks against a general low of 63, and the out-of-state quota sat higher than the Punjab quota on a general list of only three names, which is a pool small enough that one strong applicant moves the closing mark and last year's number predicts very little.
The other thing these lists show is movement. Seats are allotted with a fee deadline, and candidates who do not pay are dropped: by the second LL.M. list, published on 7 September 2026, the general Punjab entry had come down to 61 marks and the SC and ST entry to 45. If your name is on a waiting list, the number that finally admits you is not the one in the first gazette.
Placements
The university reports its outcomes to NAAC in aggregate, one figure for the whole campus. In its 2023-24 annual quality report, 1,040 students were placed during the year, which the university records as 23 per cent, while 2,930 students, or 64 per cent of the previous graduating batch, went on to higher education instead, and a further 621 cleared a state, national or international level examination. Those are the university's own calculations against a final-year cohort of 4,616, and on them further study is the majority route here while a first job is the minority one.
The one department with programme-level outcomes on the public record is Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Research, because it files a ranking return each year.
| Pharmacy programme, 2023-24 batch | Graduated | Placed | Median salary | Higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.Pharmacy (4 years) | 50 | 15 | Rs 3,25,000 | 35 |
| M.Pharmacy (2 years) | 36 | 27 | Rs 4,80,000 | 9 |
Read that table before you commit to a B.Pharm seat. Most of the bachelor's batch went on to study further rather than take a job, and the master's batch inverted that completely, so the four-year degree behaves here like a step toward the M.Pharm rather than a route into work.
For every other department the prospectus offers recruiters and a band instead of a median. It names Infosys, Quark, TCS, KPMG, L&T, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank among the 30-plus companies that recruited in the 2025-26 season, on salary packages it describes as ranging from 3.65 to 7.00 LPA, for profiles from cyber security analyst to software developer and management trainee. That band is the university's own account of offers made to eligible students, not an average and not a per-programme figure, and no median salary is published for the engineering, management or arts departments.
Seat Matrix
Sanctioned intake is fixed per programme and printed in the prospectus, which is the only consolidated list the university publishes. The campus programmes applicants ask about most:
| Programme | Sanctioned seats | Admission route |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering | 200 | JEE Main 2026 |
| B.Tech Civil | 90 | Class 12 merit |
| B.Tech Mechanical | 90 | Class 12 merit |
| B.Tech Electronics and Communication | 60 | Class 12 merit |
| B.Tech Electronics and Computer Engineering | 60 | Class 12 merit |
| B.Tech lateral entry, each branch | 18 | Diploma or B.Sc. merit |
| MBA (2 years) | 200 | Qualifying exam, group discussion and interview |
| MBA (2 years) Dual Degree | 44 | Group discussion and interview |
| MCA | 80 | Qualifying degree merit |
| B.Pharmacy | 60 | University entrance test |
| M.Pharmacy | 37 | GPAT, then B.Pharm merit |
| BCA (Honours with Research) | 50 | University entrance test |
| B.A. LL.B. (5 years) | 120 | Punjab state counselling |
| LL.B. (3 years), day and second shift | 112 and 60 | Punjab state counselling |
| LL.M. (2 years) | 30 | University entrance test |
| LL.M. (1 year), morning and second shift | 35 and 30 | University entrance test |
| Master of Physiotherapy | 28 | University entrance test |
| Bachelor of Physiotherapy | 28 | Qualifying exam merit |
| ITEP B.A. B.Ed. and B.Sc. B.Ed. | 50 each | NCET, conducted by NTA |
Every one of those counts is then split by the domicile rule that governs the whole university: 85% of seats are reserved for candidates from Punjab and 15% are open to candidates from outside the state, with the out-of-state share carrying only the constitutional reservations of 25% for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and 10% for Backward Classes. Three per cent of the seats in every programme are sports seats, needing a gradation certificate from the Director of Sports, Punjab, and a physical test held the day before the interview.
An applicant from another state has one more door worth knowing about. On top of that quota, five additional sports seats are created in every programme for outstanding sportspersons, open to candidates from anywhere in the country, and the prospectus explicitly waives the Punjab gradation requirement on them because most states run no gradation policy at all.
The M.Pharm intake is split by specialisation rather than pooled: pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology and pharmacognosy take eight candidates each and pharmacy practice takes five. Within that, 85% of the seats in each specialisation are held for candidates who took their B.Pharm at Punjabi University itself, which makes the bachelor's programme a direct feeder into the master's.
Rankings
In the 2025 India Rankings the only place this university holds by rank is pharmacy: 59th, with a score of 49.35. It takes no place in the ranked top hundred of the university or overall lists that year, and the most recent general placing the prospectus itself quotes is 64th on the ranking framework's university list of 2020.
| Pharmacy parameter, India Rankings 2025 | Score |
|---|---|
| Graduation Outcomes | 67.27 |
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 58.69 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 55.19 |
| Perception | 34.87 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 30.93 |
The shape of that scorecard matters more than the rank itself. Graduation outcomes carry the score while research and professional practice drags it down, a spread of more than 36 points inside one discipline, and the whole placing belongs to a department that admits 60 undergraduates and 37 postgraduates a year. Anyone choosing an arts, engineering or management seat here is choosing an institution whose only national ranking is earned somewhere else on the campus.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
The Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha Library is the asset this campus leans on hardest. The prospectus puts the stock at more than 579,241 volumes and 1,508 e-books, with 92 print journals and 3 databases, open 360 days of the year for 22 hours a day, and a reading hall seating more than 700 alongside a separate night reading hall for personal books.
The wing inside it is the part a humanities researcher should notice. The Dr. Ganda Singh Punjabi Reference Library holds more than 1.10 lakh documents on Punjab history, Sikhism and Punjabi language and literature, of which roughly 77,641 were collected from about 80 historians and writers and include diaries, manuscripts and periodicals from the 19th and 20th centuries. An average of 9,070 teachers and students used the library each day over the last reported year.
Sport is the second thing this place is known for. The Directorate of Sports was set up in 1963 on 16.89 acres, with a shooting range, a floodlit athletics track and two sports hostels accommodating 200 men and women each, and the university took the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy, awarded for the best overall performance in Indian inter-university sport, ten times between 2005 and 2017.
For ordinary teaching the campus reports 281 classrooms and seminar halls, 2,745 computers held for academic use, and five auditoriums seating 2,546 people between them. The health centre runs around the clock with two ambulances, a digital X-ray, an ECG and a laboratory, and the physiotherapy department runs specialised outpatient clinics open to the public as well as to students.
Hostel
Faculty
The two figures the university publishes about its own teachers do not agree, and the gap is the more honest one. The prospectus describes a faculty of approximately 1,500 teachers. The annual quality report filed with NAAC for 2023-24 records 618 full-time teachers against 825 sanctioned posts, teaching 12,810 enrolled students. The wider number counts guest, contract and affiliated-college teaching; the narrower one counts permanent faculty on the university's rolls, and it says a quarter of the sanctioned posts stood unfilled.
That shortfall is not spread evenly, so the question worth asking is departmental rather than institutional. Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Research, for one, entered 17 faculty members and reported 18 full-time and 10 part-time doctoral scholars with three sponsored research projects running. The prospectus lists every teaching department's staff by name and qualification, which is the fastest way to check whether the department you are applying to is carried by professors or held together by ad-hoc and guest appointments.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has assessed the university four times, and the record reads as a slow climb rather than a single verdict.
| NAAC cycle | Grade | CGPA | Year | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Five Star | Not applicable | 2002 | 2002 to 2007 |
| 2nd | A | 3.11 | 2008 | 2008 to 2013 |
| 3rd | A | 3.34 | 2016 | 2016 to 2023 |
| 4th | A+ | 3.37 | 2023 | 2023 to 2028 |
Programme-level approvals sit on top of that grade, and they are the ones that decide whether a particular degree is recognised for practice. B.Pharmacy and M.Pharmacy are approved by the Pharmacy Council of India, the engineering and computer applications programmes by AICTE, the teacher education programmes by the National Council for Teacher Education, and the law programmes by the Bar Council of India. Those four regulators also cap intake: the prospectus states that no additional seats can be created in B.Pharmacy, M.Pharmacy, M.Ed., M.P.Ed. or the law programmes, because their councils do not permit it.
Aid
Scholarships
Financial aid runs in two layers. The general layer is the national and state machinery any state university student can reach, including central and state merit scholarships, the Government of India loan scholarship scheme, Punjab's assistance for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Backward Class students, and stipends for the children and grandchildren of freedom fighters.
One route is easy to over-read, so take it exactly as written. Orphan candidates get two supernumerary seats, one male and one female, in each undergraduate programme, reserved for Punjab domicile and awarded on the lowest guardian income; a candidate admitted there pays no fee at admission and no hostel accommodation charge, only the mess bill. There is no equivalent provision at postgraduate level.
The second layer is specific to this campus and unusually long: dozens of named endowments, most tied to one department and often to a single year of a single programme.
| Award | Who it is for | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Departmental merit scholarship | Top-ranked entrant in each PG programme, B.Pharm, B.Tech and LL.B. | Rs 500 a month |
| Justice Iqbal Singh Tiwana Memorial | LL.B. student of rural background, held three years on a 60% record | Rs 1,000 a month |
| Dr. Harkirat Singh Memorial | M.A. Part-I student of Religious Studies, merit cum means | Rs 2,000 a month |
| Dr. Shasthi Chowdhuri Memorial | Topper of M.Sc. Part-I Forensic Science | Rs 24,000 a year |
| Begum Iqbal Bano Memorial | Toppers of M.A. Urdu Part-I and Part-II, affiliated colleges included | Rs 12,000 a year |
| Stipends for blind and disabled students | Ten awards across UG and PG, on a 40% disability certificate | Rs 500 each |
Read that list honestly. The amounts are small, and almost every award is written for a named department, so whether anything here reaches you depends entirely on which programme you enter and where you place inside it.

Student Reviews
Expertie publishes no student ratings for this university, because there is no verified first-party review set to publish and an invented one would be worse than none. The university's Internal Quality Assurance Cell does run a Student Satisfaction Survey and says it feeds into policy, but it does not release programme-level results in its public annual report. Until something verifiable exists, the more reliable substitute is to ring the department office on the number printed against it in the prospectus and ask what this semester's class strength is and how many teaching posts are filled.

Gallery
Expertie has not yet self-hosted any official photograph of the Patiala campus. Patiala also holds Thapar, and Chitkara sits in the same district at Rajpura, so an unlabelled photograph captioned as a Patiala university may well be one of those instead. The university publishes its own images on punjabiuniversity.ac.in, which is the set to trust.
