M.s Ramaiah Medical College

Bengaluru Urban, Karnataka Est. 1979 Official site Updated
NIRF Medical
#50

All 200 MBBS seats at M. S. Ramaiah Medical College are allotted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority, and the college admits nobody outside that process. What the counselling then hands you is not one price but four. A government seat was billed at Rs 1,56,621 for 2025-26, a private seat at Rs 25,15,000 and a management or NRI seat at Rs 45,15,000, and in the first round of the 2026 cycle the government general-merit column stopped at all India rank 12,100 while the private open column ran to 83,626. Behind that spread sits a change of status the college made in 2022-23, when it left the state health-sciences university, and Karnataka's annual fee order has priced it differently ever since.

Overview

M. S. Ramaiah Medical College opened in 1979 and belongs to the Ramaiah Group of Institutions, founded by M S Ramaiah, whose name the whole campus carries. Its own site now styles it Ramaiah Medical College, while the National Institutional Ranking Framework and KEA both still list it under the fuller name. The teaching hospital came five years after the college: Ramaiah Medical College Hospital was set up on the same campus in 1984 and its overview page puts it at 1,392 beds today, covering the broad and super specialities the course rotates through.

The status change is easy to miss and it decides the rest. The college was affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences until 2021-22, and from 2022-23 it became a constituent college of M. S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, a private university approved by the Government of Karnataka, as the college states in its own admissions FAQ. Your MBBS degree therefore comes from the university, not from the state health-sciences university, and the counselling route stays with Karnataka rather than moving to the national deemed-university rounds.

Several institutions carry the Ramaiah name on and around the same ground, and a search for any one of them turns up the others. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Ramaiah College of Law and the arts, science and commerce college are separate institutions admitting on their own routes, and the university is the parent rather than a synonym for this college. Every figure below belongs to the medical college under the two codes it files by, M004 in KEA's medical seat matrix and IR-D-C-40345 in its NIRF submission, and none of it describes them.

Courses & Fees

MBBS runs five years and six months here, including one year of Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship, and the entry bar set on the college's MBBS page is a qualified UG-NEET result plus 50 percent in aggregate across physics, chemistry and biology at 2nd PUC or the equivalent, relaxed to 40 percent for SC, ST, Category 1, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B candidates. Above the undergraduate degree the college teaches MD and MS across 23 departments, DM and MCh across 13, fellowship courses and a doctoral programme in medical sciences, which is how its admissions page reaches 448 sanctioned seats a year in all.

Inside those 192 postgraduate seats the weight sits in a handful of departments. The same page gives general medicine 20 seats, anaesthesia 19, paediatrics 18, and obstetrics and gynaecology and orthopaedics 15 each, while hospital administration takes 2 and microbiology, community medicine and forensic medicine 3 apiece. A candidate looking past MBBS to a residency here is really choosing between a large clinical department and a small laboratory one.

The fee is where the university change stops being paperwork. KEA prices every medical college in Karnataka in one order, and it sorts them by college type. In the college-wise MBBS fee structure for 2025-26 this college is entered as Private or Deemed University, which carries its own line: Rs 1,56,621 on a government seat and Rs 25,15,000 on a private one, against Rs 1,53,571 and Rs 12,00,117 for a college KEA classifies as Private UnAided. The college's own MBBS page publishes the tuition it charges for 2026-27 alongside that, at Rs 25,00,000 a year for the private quota and Rs 45,00,000 for the NRI and other quota, with the government-quota figure left to whatever the Government of Karnataka orders for the year.

QuotaKEA fee, 2025-26College tuition, 2026-27

PrivateRs 25,15,000Rs 25,00,000 a year
Other or managementRs 45,15,000Rs 45,00,000 a year
NRIRs 45,15,000Rs 45,00,000 a year

Both sets of figures are annual, and the college does not publish a single five-and-a-half-year total, so treat any headline "total fee" you meet elsewhere as somebody's multiplication rather than a published number.

Admissions

There is no application to the college for a seat. Its admissions page states flatly that there is no direct admission to MBBS, MD, MS, DM or MCh, and that allotment is only by merit counselling through a common counselling authority. For MBBS and for the MD and MS seats that authority is KEA, working off your NEET-UG or NEET-PG rank. For the DM and MCh seats it is the Medical Counselling Committee, working off NEET-SS. A candidate here therefore deals with the state portal for the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and with the national one only at super speciality, and registering on the wrong portal at the wrong stage is the mistake that costs a cycle.

One reservation is worth knowing before you enter an option list. The same page records that 15 percent of the total seats in MBBS, MD and MS are held for NRI, OCI, PIO and foreign candidates, and those seats are allotted through the same KEA counselling as every other column rather than sold separately.

Cutoff

Karnataka publishes no college-wise cutoff table, but it publishes something better: the allotment file itself, seat by seat. In the first round final seat allotment for UGNEET-2026, published on 28 August 2026, every seat filled at this college is printed with the all-India NEET rank that took it, the category code it came in under and the fee attached to it. Set beside KEA's seat matrix, the MBBS columns turn out to be separate queues rather than rungs of one ladder.

MBBS column, KEA round 1 of 2026SeatsFee attachedWhere the column opened
Government, general merit29Rs 1,56,6211,267, closing at 12,100
Private, code OPN36Rs 25,15,00024,746, closing at 83,626
Private, code GMP37Rs 25,15,00093,027
NRI30Rs 45,00,0001,44,485
Management, code OTH10Rs 45,00,000Deeper than 1,44,485
Private, code GMPH7Rs 25,15,000Deeper than 1,44,485

Two rows in that table upset the usual assumption. The management column, at Rs 45,00,000 a year the joint dearest seat here, opened deeper than the NRI column did, and the GMPH seats, billed the same Rs 25,15,000 as the open private ones, opened deeper again. A higher fee did not buy a shallower rank at this college; it bought a place in a different queue, and a candidate is only ever counselled inside the one column their eligibility puts them in.

The gap that does bite is the first one. Between the last government general-merit seat at 12,100 and the first private open seat at 24,746 there is nothing at all, and that stretch of ranks is what separates Rs 1,56,621 a year from Rs 25,15,000 a year in the same lecture hall. No amount of option-entry strategy carries a candidate across it.

Use these as calibration, not as a target. Round 1 is the first of several, and the mop-up and stray vacancy rounds keep reopening seats as candidates surrender them, which pushes the last allotted rank further out as the cycle wears on. The reserved category rows inside the government block travel furthest, because most of them carry between one and three seats, so a single candidate's change of mind moves a category's closing rank by tens of thousands of places. Read the row for the category you are actually eligible under.

Placements

The most telling thing in this college's placement record is how little it moves. The MBBS median it filed in its NIRF 2025 data submission held at Rs 6,60,000 for two cohorts running before edging to Rs 6,80,000 for the third. A recruitment market produces variation; a stipend schedule does not, and what an MBBS graduate steps into after the internship is a junior residency on a fixed rate.

CohortGraduated in minimum timeRecorded as placedMedian salaryWent to higher studies
MBBS, 2020-21135124Rs 6,60,00011
MBBS, 2021-22131126Rs 6,60,0005
MBBS, 2022-23126108Rs 6,80,00018
MD and MS, 2022-2311999Rs 12,40,00020

The postgraduate row in the same submission is where the earning changes, at a median of Rs 12,40,000 for the MD and MS cohort of 2022-23 against Rs 6,80,000 for the MBBS cohort of the very same year. For anyone weighing a private-quota year against that, the useful reading is that the MBBS median is a stipend for a doctor still in training, and the specialist figure arrives only after a second entrance exam and a three-year residency.

Seat Matrix

The current intake is recent, and the previous one lasted a long time. In the college's NIRF submission the sanctioned undergraduate intake stands at 150 in every year from 2019-20 through 2023-24, with 169 postgraduate seats across the last three of them. Anything written about the college during those years was written before that intake rose, so treat older seat counts and older rank talk as describing a smaller class. The same filing puts 748 students on the undergraduate rolls, 576 of them from within Karnataka, alongside 453 postgraduates, which makes this a predominantly Karnataka lecture hall rather than a national one.

KEA's provisional MBBS seat matrix for 2026, dated 13 August 2026, breaks the current 200 into the columns a candidate is actually counselled against. Its Karnataka merit seats sit in the rows KEA codes RK and HK, at 70 seats and 6, and the paid columns sit under them.

The allotment file collapses those rows into four labels when it releases the seats, MBBS-GOVT., MBBS-PRIV., MBBS-MNG and MBBS-NRI, and only the first was billed at Rs 1,56,621; the rest went out at Rs 25,15,000 or Rs 45,00,000. That is why, at this college, asking what the fee is and asking which seat you can reach are the same question asked twice.

Rankings

A single overall score of 50.91 puts the college at rank 50 in the NIRF 2025 Medical ranking, and that tidy coincidence hides five parameters running from 78.53 at the top down to 13.32 at the bottom.

NIRF 2025 medical parameterScore
Teaching, Learning and Resources78.53
Graduation Outcomes76.32
Outreach and Inclusivity56.91
Perception24.12
Research and Professional Practice13.32

A candidate who reads only the rank 50 is missing what it is made of, because these five parameters do not describe one institution equally well. Teaching, learning and resources at 78.53 and graduation outcomes at 76.32 sit well clear of the middle, while research and professional practice at 13.32 falls below everything else on the list, perception included. That gap should split two kinds of candidate. An undergraduate spends the whole course inside the teaching capacity and the completion record those top two parameters measure, and 78.53 is a reasonable place to spend it. A resident, whose three years are meant to produce papers as well as clinical hours, is being offered a college that scored 13.32 on exactly that, below even the 24.12 it earns on outside perception.

Departments

The college's admissions page puts the count at 37 departments, and the useful split inside that number is not pre-clinical against clinical: it is how many run a super speciality course of their own, which 13 of the 37 do. An MBBS student here rotates through wards that also carry DM and MCh residents, and that changes who is standing at the bedside explaining a case. The departments listing groups them four ways.

GroupDepartments
Pre-clinicalAnatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry
Para-clinicalPathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine
ClinicalGeneral Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthesiology, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Radio Diagnosis, Radiation Oncology, Otorhinolaryngology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, Respiratory Medicine, Hospital Administration, Neurology
Super specialityEndocrinology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Medical Oncology, Urology, Neuro Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Critical Care Medicine, Neonatology

Sponsored research into those departments more than doubled in a single year. The NIRF 2025 submission counts 24 projects in 2022-23 against 57 in 2023-24, drawn from 32 funding agencies and worth Rs 3,01,71,567, which is real money arriving in a college the ranking framework scores low on research.

Facilities & Infrastructure

A bed count on its own tells a candidate very little, because a sanctioned bed and an occupied bed are different things. This college files both. Ward rounds here happen around an average of 1,085 occupied beds. The hospital is sanctioned for 1,340 of them, and its outpatient department logged 2,231 visits on an average day in 2023, all of it declared in the NIRF 2025 submission. Occupancy, not sanction, is what the clinical years actually consist of. The 1,392 beds the college now advertises on its overview is the newer capacity figure, not the teaching load.

Teaching space is more ordinary and worth knowing before a campus visit. The classroom listing shows seven lecture halls, five of them seating 225 or more and two smaller ones at 108, all air conditioned bar one and wired for projection.

Library resourceFigure
Floor area46,000 square feet
Seats at one time850
Books23,054
Bound volumes of journals12,245
Computers in the digital library60
Departmental libraries besides the central one38

The central library started with the college in 1979 and moved to its present premises in 2015. Beyond it, the lab listing sets out an Advanced Learning Center running two operational labs: a medical skills lab teaching trauma and cardiac life support on mannequins, models and simulators, and a cadaveric research and training unit that prepares cadavers as near-life specimens for surgical practice. Its multimedia section seats 100 for procedures a class cannot physically crowd around, and the anatomy dissection hall on the same listing takes 150.

Hostel

Accommodation sits inside the campus rather than around it, and it is allotted separately from the seat. The campus life page lists a girls' hostel in Triveni Block at 680 places and boys' hostels in the Nilgiri and Ganga blocks at 310, with single and double rooms with attached bathrooms, mess food, housekeeping, a common television room and a wifi subscription.

Hostel life here is not confined to medical students, because the ground is shared: the same page describes a 70-acre campus holding institutions from engineering to hospitality management, with a food street called Swasthya Marg running through it. What the accommodation costs is not in the KEA fee order and not on the fee page either, so it has to come from the college directly, and it should be budgeted on top of every tuition figure quoted above.

Faculty

Two official counts of the teaching body exist and they measure different things, which is why quoted faculty numbers for this college disagree. The faculty list published for the National Medical Commission as on August 2026 is numbered to 449, running from professors and heads of department down through additional, associate and assistant professors to senior residents and tutors, department by department. The NIRF 2025 submission records 240 faculty members entered, a narrower count on that framework's own definition.

The same list is more useful than either total, because it carries a date of joining against every name, the head of the institution included: Dr. Shalini Chandrashekar Nooyi appears on it as professor, principal and dean, entered under community medicine rather than a clinical speciality. Read down a department you care about and the joining dates show how much of it is long serving and how much arrived in the past two years, which tells a candidate more about teaching stability than any headline ratio.

Notable Alumni

This college publishes no roster of its graduates, and the Alumni entry in its own site menu leads to no list. Directory sites carry names against M. S. Ramaiah Medical College and cite nothing for any of them, and an unsourced list of doctors helps nobody choosing where to study, so this section stays empty until the college publishes one itself.

News & Articles

The page worth bookmarking here is the statutory one, not the news feed. The college's disclosure index under the National Medical Commission collects in one list the current teaching and non-teaching staff lists, the merit-wise category-wise lists of admitted UG, PG and DM or MCh students, the sanctioned intake letters, the recognition status of every course, the details of clinical material in the hospital, the unit-wise bed distribution and the stipend details. A candidate checking whether one specific postgraduate course is recognised, or what a resident is actually paid, will find the answer there and nowhere else on the site. The notices and announcements board carries the college's own academic and administrative announcements alongside it.

College Compare

The comparison that changes a decision here is not with another famous name but with the private-unaided colleges KEA prices in the same order. Dr B. R. Ambedkar Medical College and Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, both in Bengaluru, are entered in the 2025-26 fee structure at Rs 1,53,571 for a government seat and Rs 12,00,117 for a private one. This college, entered one line below them under a different college type, charges Rs 1,56,621 and Rs 25,15,000 for the same two columns.

On a government seat, then, the three colleges cost within a few thousand rupees of each other and the choice comes down to the hospital, the ranking and the campus. On a private seat the same choice costs more than twice as much here. The state's own government medical colleges sit at Rs 64,350 in that order, which is the third point of reference a Karnataka candidate should keep in view while entering options.

Contact & Location

Every published contact address for this college is a university one, which is the clearest sign of the 2022-23 change: a letter about a seat goes to an msruas.ac.in inbox, not to a department of the medical college.
