M S Ramaiah Institute Of Technology, Bangalore
Two candidates can enter M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology in the same COMEDK round and sit thousands of ranks apart. Computer Science closed at 1,152 in the third round of the 2026 counselling, and Medical Electronics closed at 22,730, at an identical fee, on the same campus in MSR Nagar. Which gate you come through decides as much as the branch does, because a Karnataka CET seat is priced by a state fee order and a COMEDK or management seat is not. The institute holds rank 75 in engineering and rank 31 in architecture in NIRF 2025, and those two halves of it report very different results.
Overview
MSRIT is a private, self-financing engineering college in north Bengaluru, and the family trust behind it splits its engineering work from its medical work into two separate foundations. Dr. M. S. Ramaiah founded Gokula Education Foundation (Engineering) in 1962 and the institute was born under it in the same year, and the foundation's governance page now counts eighteen institutions under that umbrella. The same page lists Dr. M. R. Seetharam as chairman of the engineering foundation and Dr. M. R. Jayaram as chairman of Gokula Education Foundation (Medical) and a trustee of the engineering one. The boards overlap; the foundations do not. Dr. B. Sathish Babu is the principal.
Degrees come from Visvesvaraya Technological University, but the syllabus and the examinations do not. COMEDK's record for the college states that MSRIT obtained academic autonomy, approved by VTU and the UGC, for all its UG and PG programmes from the year 2007. The governance page lists a Controller of Examinations of its own alongside the principal and the registrar, which is what that autonomy looks like in practice: the course structure is set in house and revised without waiting on the affiliating university, while the degree certificate still carries VTU's name.
Four institutions carry the Ramaiah name around this address, and the counselling papers separate them better than any prose can. COMEDK's 2026 engineering list alone holds three of them: the engineering college as college code E077, M. S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences as E197 and Ramaiah University College of Engineering at Jigani as E220. After the third round of 2026 the three closed Computer Science at 1,152, 31,863 and 39,375, per the cut-off ranks after round 3 allotment. Ramaiah Medical College is the fourth, sitting under the medical foundation and outside this counselling altogether. A rank, a fee or an accreditation quoted for one of them says nothing about the others.

The NAAC grade above is the institute's own statement on its homepage, which also says every academic department is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation under the new process. That homepage is worth reading with one eye open: its quick-facts strip claims 60 industrial collaborations and 700 average publications a year, while the feature block a screen below it says 46 industries and an average of 350 publications a year. Where a page disagrees with itself, the filings the institute makes to the government are the safer of the two, and every number below that could come from a filing does.
Courses & Fees
The undergraduate side is one long list of B.E. branches plus a five-year B.Arch, and the admissions page sets them out in full: Aerospace, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Biotechnology, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Computer Science with Cyber Security, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Electronics and Instrumentation, Electronics and Telecommunication, Industrial Engineering and Management, Information Science, Mechanical and Medical Electronics Engineering. Postgraduate teaching runs M.Tech across eleven specialisations, two M.Arch programmes, an MBA and an MCA, with research degrees offered as Ph.D and M.Sc by research.
Fees split by the gate, not by the branch, and this is where most published figures about the college go wrong. The Karnataka Examinations Authority sets what a CET seat costs in one order for the whole state. Its provisional fee structure for 2026-27, dated 01-07-2026, prices a general-merit CET seat in an un-aided engineering college at Rs 1,20,320 or Rs 1,30,320 depending on which of the two un-aided types the college falls in, charges nothing at all to an SC or ST candidate, and sets Rs 96,170 or Rs 1,06,170 for a Category-1 candidate whose family income is up to Rs 2.5 lakh. Architecture carries Rs 750 over the engineering figure, and university fees of Rs 12,320 for engineering and Rs 13,070 for architecture are already inside those totals.
A COMEDK seat is a different price altogether. COMEDK's final seat availability and fee structure before round 1, notified on 14.07.2026, records tuition of Rs 3,02,000 and other fees of Rs 20,000 against every one of the college's engineering courses, for a total of Rs 3,22,000, and bills B.Arch identically in the architecture seat availability and fee list. One flat price per college is how that document works throughout, so Computer Science and Civil Engineering cost the same here. What it does not flatten is the difference between colleges, and Rs 3,02,000 is the highest tuition figure anywhere in it, against the Rs 2,15,000 that recurs most often across the state's colleges.
| Route | What it costs for 2026-27 | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| CET, general merit, un-aided college | Rs 1,20,320 or Rs 1,30,320 | Karnataka Examinations Authority |
| CET, SC or ST candidate | Rs 0 | Karnataka Examinations Authority |
| CET, Category-1, income up to Rs 2.5 lakh | Rs 96,170 or Rs 1,06,170 | Karnataka Examinations Authority |
| COMEDK, B.E. and B.Arch | Rs 3,02,000 tuition plus Rs 20,000 other fees | COMEDK |
The college posts its own totals for the CET, COMEDK and management columns in a first-year fee notice and a separate higher-semester notice, both scanned rather than typed. Those two are the documents to put in front of the admission section, because the COMEDK sheet above prices only the seats COMEDK itself fills.
Fee waivers reach a real share of the class. In the institute's NIRF 2025 engineering submission, of 4,814 undergraduates 1,391 received full tuition-fee reimbursement from state and central government funds and 50 from the institution's own funds, while 198 students in the eligible categories received none. Its admissions page names the schemes those first two columns run on, the post-matric scholarship for SC and ST students, fee reimbursements and concessions by category, the National Scholarship Portal route for minority-religion students, a defence scholarship and an alumni-funded award.
Admissions
There is no JoSAA route here, and that single fact resolves most of the confusion around this college. A JEE Main rank buys nothing at MSRIT. Undergraduate seats are filled through Karnataka's CET counselling and COMEDK's UGET counselling, which the admissions page names as the two entrance routes, with the remainder taken under the management, NRI, PIO and foreign-national quotas that the institute fills itself.
Eligibility for B.E. is Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects at the 10+2 level with Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Computer Science or Electronics as the optional, at 45% in aggregate for general-category candidates and 40% for SC, ST, Category-1 and OBC candidates, per the same page. B.Arch is stricter and sits under a different regulator: 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, 50% in aggregate, English as a language, and a NATA score of at least 40%.
Postgraduate entry runs on its own exams. M.Tech admission needs a GATE score or Karnataka PGCET, the MBA accepts KMAT, CMAT, MAT or PGCET, and the MCA accepts KMAT or PGCET, all as listed on the admissions page. For the management, NRI, PIO and foreign-national seats there is one route and one only, and the homepage gives it as the admission section on 080-23607902 or admn@msrit.edu, with the notice standing open through the 2026-27 cycle.
Cutoff
The useful figure here is not one rank but one per branch. COMEDK publishes a closing rank for every branch after every round, and the cut-off ranks after round 3 allotment of the 2026 counselling, notified on 18.08.2026, give the general-merit column below. Round 4 was still to run when they were published, so these are a counselling in progress rather than a finished record.
| Branch | COMEDK 2026 general-merit closing rank, round 3 |
|---|---|
| Computer Science and Engineering | 1,152 |
| Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) | 1,402 |
| Computer Science and Engineering (Cyber Security) | 1,738 |
| Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning | 1,826 |
| Artificial Intelligence and Data Science | 2,042 |
| Information Science and Engineering | 2,066 |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | 2,347 |
| Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering | 3,450 |
| Electrical and Electronics Engineering | 4,414 |
| Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering | 4,803 |
| Aerospace Engineering | 6,353 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 8,716 |
| Industrial Engineering and Management | 15,149 |
| Chemical Engineering | 15,319 |
| Biotechnology | 16,765 |
| Civil Engineering | 20,249 |
| Medical Electronics Engineering | 22,730 |
Architecture is counselled on a merit list of its own, so its ranks do not sit on the same scale as that column. COMEDK's architecture cut-off ranks after round 2, notified on 20.08.2026, publish a single seat type, the Kalyana Karnataka regional pool, and only four of the nineteen architecture colleges in that sheet closed at a rank at all: B M S College of Architecture, Design and Planning at 564, RV College of Architecture at 673, MSRIT at 698 and BMS School of Architecture at 715. A general-merit closing rank for B.Arch is not in that document, and reading 698 as one is the commonest mistake made with this page of the counselling.
A closing rank is also not a wall. COMEDK's list of vacant seats before round 4, notified on 26 August 2026, still showed seats open in every one of the college's seventeen engineering branches after allotted candidates surrendered them, 10 in Computer Science and 12 in Mechanical among them, which is how the last allotted rank in a branch drifts deeper as a cycle runs. Candidates entering through Karnataka's CET are counselled against a separate seat pool with its own round-wise closing ranks, published by the Karnataka Examinations Authority on its UGCET portal rather than by the college.
Placements
Read the filing, not the poster. The institute's NIRF 2025 engineering submission puts the four-year B.E. median at Rs 6,15,000 for the 2021-22 graduating cohort, Rs 8,00,000 for 2022-23 and Rs 7,50,000 for 2023-24, so the typical package rose sharply and then fell back. The placement rate held steadier than the money did.
| B.E. cohort | Graduated in minimum time | Placed | Median salary | Went to higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 1,124 | 897 | Rs 6,15,000 | 140 |
| 2022-23 | 1,121 | 841 | Rs 8,00,000 | 167 |
| 2023-24 | 1,075 | 787 | Rs 7,50,000 | 195 |
Postgraduate outcomes sit lower and move less. The same submission records 84 of 98 two-year postgraduates placed in 2023-24 at a median of Rs 6,10,000, against Rs 6,00,000 for each of the two years before it. An M.Tech here has not been the earnings step a B.E. graduate might assume it is.
Architecture is the sharper contrast, and it is on the same campus. The NIRF 2025 architecture submission reports 72 of 75 B.Arch students placed in 2023-24, a better placement share than any engineering cohort above, at a median of Rs 2,52,000. The M.Arch median in the same filing is Rs 4,20,000 with all 11 graduates placed. A student choosing between the two degrees at this address is choosing between a near-certain placement at architecture rates and a less certain one at engineering rates.
The institute's own placement page advertises 358 companies, 1,892 job offers, a highest package of 50 LPA and an average of 7.66 LPA, none of it dated. The body text on that page attributes 1,892 offers to the 2016 batch and 378 companies to it, so at least one of those headline tiles is a decade old. Treat the tiles as marketing and the NIRF medians as the record.
Seat Matrix
COMEDK's share of the intake is published branch by branch, split into a general-merit pool and a Kalyana Karnataka regional pool, in the final seat availability list before round 1 of the 2026 cycle. Computer Science is by far the largest single block.
| Branch | COMEDK seats | General merit | Kalyana Karnataka |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Science and Engineering | 59 | 54 | 5 |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | 41 | 37 | 4 |
| Information Science and Engineering | 41 | 37 | 4 |
| Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) | 39 | 35 | 4 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 36 | 33 | 3 |
| Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning | 21 | 19 | 2 |
| Computer Science and Engineering (Cyber Security) | 21 | 19 | 2 |
| Aerospace, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Biotechnology, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Instrumentation, Electronics and Telecommunication, Industrial Engineering and Management, Medical Electronics, each | 18 | 16 | 2 |
| Bachelor of Architecture | 24 | 22 | 2 |
Every row above is one gate's share of a branch, and the management, NRI and CET rows sit outside that document entirely. The whole approved intake, across every quota, is in the NIRF 2025 engineering submission: 1,401 undergraduate seats for 2023-24, up from 1,260 in each of the two preceding years and 1,080 in 2020-21. Postgraduate intake moved the other way, from 264 seats to 180. Anything written about this college before that expansion describes a smaller undergraduate class than the one on campus now.
Architecture has been steady where engineering grew. The architecture submission records the same 80 B.Arch seats in every year from 2019-20 to 2023-24, with 20 M.Arch seats added in the last two, and 378 students on the B.Arch rolls of whom 241 are women, while the engineering filing counts 1,684 women among 4,814 undergraduates. The architecture school is the one part of this campus where women are the majority.
Rankings
MSRIT appears in two NIRF 2025 tables, and its two entries are not variations on one performance. The engineering ranking places it 75th with an overall score of 49.26; the architecture ranking places it 31st with 53.54. The parameter split explains the gap better than the ranks do.
| NIRF 2025 parameter | Engineering | Architecture |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 70.38 | 59.87 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 28.02 | 27.96 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 62.77 | 76.39 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 56.51 | 56.51 |
| Perception | 15.50 | 30.68 |
Teaching resources carry the engineering score at 70.38, and perception sinks it at 15.50, the lowest of its five parameters and roughly half of what the architecture programme earns on the same measure. The architecture entry is the stronger one on graduation outcomes, 76.39 against 62.77, which fits the placement filings above. Research is the flat line: 28.02 and 27.96 is the same weak score written twice, so neither entry is being carried by its publication and project record.
The institute's homepage reads those two ranks as No. 75 among 1584 engineering institutions and No. 31 among 131 architecture institutions, and calls itself the best of the engineering and architecture institutions under VTU. That second claim is checkable and it holds up: MSRIT is the only VTU-affiliated college anywhere in the top hundred of the NIRF 2025 engineering table. The other Karnataka entries around it are NITK Surathkal, Manipal Institute of Technology, IIIT Bangalore, Christ University, IIT Dharwad and Jain University, and not one of them takes a VTU degree.
Departments
The doctoral list here is wider than the taught-postgraduate one. Research programmes leading to Ph.D or M.Sc by research are open in seventeen departments, per the admissions page: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, Chemical, Industrial Engineering and Management, Electronics and Instrumentation, Information Science, Electronics and Telecommunication, Medical Electronics and Biotechnology, plus Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, the MBA department and the MCA department. M.Tech runs in eleven specialisations, so several branches, Medical Electronics and Industrial Engineering and Management among them, supervise doctorates without offering a taught master's of their own, and the three basic-science departments do the same while owning no B.E. branch at all.
Above the departments sit named research centres. The institute's centres of excellence page lists a Centre for Imaging Technologies, a Centre for Advanced Materials Technology, a Centre for Cyber Physical Systems and a Centre for Antennas and Radio Frequency Systems, alongside a Schneider centre of excellence on building automation and an Apple authorised training centre for education. Where an applicant wants project work beyond the timetable, those centres and the sponsored projects under Faculty below are the concrete places to ask about.
Facilities & Infrastructure
Capital spending describes a campus more honestly than its photographs do. The 2023-24 column of the NIRF 2025 engineering submission shows Rs 7,90,35,657 on new laboratory equipment and software, Rs 8,38,72,966 on classrooms, seminar halls and other capital assets, Rs 1,69,61,149 on engineering workshops and Rs 1,06,65,875 on library books, journals and e-resources. The second of those is the line that moved: it stood at Rs 1,11,43,419 the year before, so the classroom and hall budget went up roughly sevenfold in a single year while the laboratory line was already running in the five-to-six crore band.
Access is documented rather than asserted. NIRF puts three questions about physically challenged students to every institution, and MSRIT answers yes to all three on the same return: walking aids and wheelchairs are stocked, students who need it are moved from one building to another, and the coverage it claims for ramps or lifts and for specially designed toilets is the form's top band, more than 80% of its buildings, in each case. COMEDK's college record fills in the everyday layer: a canteen, a bank, a post office, a health centre, sports facilities with a gymnasium, campus internet, and group medical insurance carried for every UG and PG student.
Hostel
Hostels for boys and for girls sit on the campus, listed among the facilities in COMEDK's record for the college, and the institute's hostel page sets out the boys' side block by block: 552 rooms and 1,025 seats across a General Block, a Fresher's Block held for first years, and two blocks still named for NRI students, in single, double and triple occupancy with attached or common bathrooms. The house rules on that page are unusually specific. The mess is vegetarian and outside delivery is barred from the premises, the main gate shuts at 10.30 p.m. and does not reopen until 6.00 a.m., and a doctor sits in the health centre from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, with emergencies referred to Ramaiah Hospital.
What the page does not carry is a price. That same page publishes a refund ladder instead of a rate card, deducting an admission fee of Rs 1000 from a student who transfers to another college and returning 75% of rent and maintenance charges to one who leaves within a month of moving in, and it says outright that hostel charges may be revised. The NIRF filings carry no accommodation figure either.
That gap matters more than it looks, because the engineering filing shows 1,834 of 4,814 undergraduates coming from outside Karnataka and 119 from outside India, per the NIRF 2025 engineering submission. For most of them a hostel place is not a choice, and its cost lands on the family budget after tuition rather than inside it. The admission section is the only desk holding the current room categories and rates.
Faculty
Two filings count the teaching body twice, on two definitions: 398 faculty members in the engineering submission and 57 in the architecture submission, each counted for that framework's own programme. The doctoral school beneath them is substantial for a college of this kind: 140 full-time and 217 part-time scholars registered up to 2023-24, with 14 full-time and 34 part-time scholars finishing in that year.
Sponsored research is real but modest, and it has been drifting. The engineering filing counts 22 sponsored projects from 16 agencies worth Rs 3,48,39,908 in 2023-24, against 39 projects in 2022-23 and 28 in 2021-22, so the money went up while the project count fell. Consultancy runs alongside it at 47 projects for 27 client organisations worth Rs 1,07,00,000 in the same year, which is a healthier industry pipeline than the research score in the ranking table suggests.
Architecture is the blunt exception. Its submission records zero sponsored projects and zero funding agencies in each of 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24, with two consultancy projects worth Rs 4,44,012 as the only external work in 2023-24. An applicant choosing B.Arch here for research exposure is choosing against the evidence.
Notable Alumni
MSRIT publishes no alumni roster a reader can check. The Proud Alumni link in its placement section points at a file the site does not serve, and the alumni association runs a separate website organised around reunions and events rather than names. Until the institute puts names on the record itself, a roll assembled from directory listings is not worth an applicant's attention.
News & Articles
The institute's news feed is empty. Its news page carries a Latest News heading with nothing under it, and the news and events blocks on the homepage are blank in the same way, so the live notices sit in the alert strip at the top of that homepage instead. Through the 2026-27 cycle that strip has carried an open admission notice for all UG courses under the management, NRI, PIO and foreign-national quotas, an enabled fee-payment link for B.E. higher-semester NRI students and for PG higher-semester students, links to the first-year, higher-semester and second-year PG fee structures, and an anti-ragging grievance address at grievances@msrit.edu with the registrar's line on 080-23608445.
For anyone still inside the counselling, the calendar that matters is COMEDK's rather than the college's: vacant seats for the fourth engineering round were notified on 26 August 2026 in the vacancy list, and each round republishes both the vacancies and the closing ranks.
College Compare
Across every college in COMEDK's engineering counselling, MSRIT is second on demand for Computer Science and a long way clear of third. The COMEDK cut-off ranks after round 3 of 2026 put the general-merit close as follows.
| College | COMEDK 2026 CSE closing rank, round 3 |
|---|---|
| R V College of Engineering | 418 |
| M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology | 1,152 |
| BMS College of Engineering | 3,268 |
| Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering | 5,407 |
| Bangalore Institute of Technology | 7,969 |
| B.N.M. Institute of Technology | 22,838 |
| M. S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences | 31,863 |
| JSS Academy of Technical Education | 32,267 |
Two rows there are worth pausing on. R V College closes at 418, nearly three times sharper for the same branch, so a candidate holding a rank in the hundreds has a genuine choice to make rather than a formality. And the university that shares the Ramaiah name and the MSR Nagar address closes at 31,863 for Computer Science, tens of thousands of ranks later, which is the plainest answer available to anyone who has been told the two are interchangeable.
Contact & Location
The campus is at MSR Nagar in north Bengaluru, and the admission section rather than a department office is the desk that answers on seats, fees and quota applications.

One caution about the counselling-side record. COMEDK's college page still names a different principal from the one on the institute's governance page, and still shows a NIRF rank from 2020. For the address and the phone numbers it is reliable; for anything that turns over with the year, the institute's own pages and its NIRF filings are the current documents.
