Mahatma Gandhi Medical College And Research Institute

Puducherry, Puducherry Est. 2001 Official site Updated
NIRF Medical
#42

Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute sits 42nd among medical colleges in the government's NIRF 2025 table, and on one of that framework's five parameters no institution in the table scores higher. It is a constituent college of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, a private deemed university on the coast road between Puducherry and Cuddalore, and that single status settles most of the practical questions: a seat is allotted centrally on a NEET-UG rank, every MBBS place sits in the open category, and a Puducherry address buys nothing at all. What the college publishes, and what it quietly does not, is the other half of the picture.

Overview

MGMCRI admitted its first MBBS batch in April 2001, well before the university that now signs its degrees existed. The Sri Balaji Educational and Charitable Public Trust that built it opened Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College in 2003 and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences in 2006, and the University Grants Commission granted the group deemed-to-be-university status in 2008, forming Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth as a health sciences university, per the college's history page.

The campus is at Pillaiyarkuppam, on the national highway between Puducherry and Cuddalore and about 14 km out of Puducherry town, as the college's location page sets out. That address does real work. The college puts the hospital's catchment as the urban and rural public in the vicinity, with the services aimed at the needy and underserved, so five years here are spent on a caseload the town's private clinics never see.

The name is a trap for anyone searching. Mahatma Gandhi Mission's Medical College in Navi Mumbai, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Jaipur and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences at Sevagram are separate institutions in other states, with their own fees, seats and counselling routes. Everything set out below belongs to the Puducherry college and to nothing else.

Courses & Fees

The ladder here starts at MBBS and climbs to the super specialties without leaving the campus. The college lists an MBBS intake of 250, 20 postgraduate programmes across the pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical departments, 4 super specialty programmes and 13 fellowships, per its history page. Postgraduate teaching began in the clinical departments in 2007 and reached the pre and para-clinical ones in 2008-09; the super specialty programmes in cardiology, urology, neurosurgery and cardiothoracic and vascular surgery opened in 2011.

The fee is where the public record simply stops. Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth does keep course-fee pages online, but they cover the allied health sciences programmes, nursing and the PhD, and MBBS is not among them. The last MBBS number the university published itself belongs to the 2017-18 intake, when a counselling notice told allotted candidates to bring a demand draft for Rs 18,00,000 in annual fees, Rs 1,55,000 for hostel and mess and Rs 1,00,000 in other charges, in that admission notice.

That figure is nearly a decade old and should be read as a record of what the university has been willing to state publicly, not as a quote for your year. The binding number is whatever fee the university notifies for the cycle you are allotted into. Ask the admission office for it in writing before you fill choices, and treat any all-in figure on a listing site as unverified until it matches a document carrying the university's name.

Admissions

Admission runs entirely through the Medical Counselling Committee, which lists MGMCRI among the deemed universities under institute code 200379. MCC's round 1 seat matrix for NEET-UG 2026 puts exactly two rows against that code, 235 self-financed merit seats and 15 non-resident Indian seats, and it records the category for both as open.

That last detail is the one most candidates miss. A deemed university seat carries no SC, ST, OBC or EWS reservation, so a reserved-category candidate who takes an MGMCRI seat takes it on the open list at an open-category rank. Nor is either row keyed to where you live. Neighbouring rows in the same file break the Puducherry government seats out by category, from BC through to ST; MGMCRI's two rows carry the single code OP and nothing else.

The enrolment mix is what that produces. Of 1,250 undergraduate students on the rolls, 57 come from within the state, 1,173 from other states and 20 from outside India, in the college's NIRF 2025 data submission. A first-year MBBS batch at MGMCRI is a national batch that happens to be sitting in Puducherry, and a local candidate joins it with no head start.

Postgraduate seats are filled the same way on different exams, NEET-PG for MD and MS and NEET-SS for DM and MCh, with the allotment made centrally and the college confined to verifying documents afterwards. What is unusually open here is the paper trail. MGMCRI keeps year-by-year lists of the students it actually admitted on its statutory information page, undergraduate, postgraduate and super specialty filed apart, running back to 2015 on the undergraduate side with 2020 missing. Those are the college's own record of who got in, which is worth more than anyone's reconstruction of it.

Cutoff

Because every seat here is an open-category seat, MGMCRI has no category-wise cutoff at all, and that is the first thing separating it from a government medical college. The round 1 seat matrix records the category as open for both the merit and the NRI pools, so there is no separate SC, ST, OBC or EWS closing rank to look up, only one merit line and a much shorter NRI line beside it.

What does exist is a closing rank, and it lives in exactly one document: the round-wise allotment list the Medical Counselling Committee publishes after each round. It is a single national file covering every college and every quota, searchable by institution name, and it is the only public record of where the last MGMCRI seat went in a given year. Anything labelled an expected cutoff before that file appears is a projection, however confidently it is presented.

Two habits will send you wrong. Treating an old closing rank as a standard forgets what it actually is: a record of which candidates filled the 235 merit places that year, in a field of deemed colleges they were choosing between, and it lands somewhere else once the later rounds and the stray vacancy round have run. The 15 NRI places are the second trap, because they close on a scale of their own; quoting an NRI rank as MGMCRI's cutoff, or the reverse, sets two pools against each other that never competed.

Placements

The striking thing in MGMCRI's placement record is the direction of travel. Across three graduating batches the median salary reported for its MBBS cohort more than doubled, from Rs 6,15,000 for the batch that finished in 2020-21 to Rs 14,10,000 for the 2022-23 batch, in the college's NIRF 2025 data submission.

2021-2224315687Rs 11,73,000
2022-2324820345Rs 14,10,000

The higher-studies column swings hard from one row to the next, which is what a postgraduate entrance cycle does to a medical batch, so read the three years together rather than picking the flattering one. The postgraduate rows are steadier and sit at a different level entirely.

Postgraduate batchGraduated on timePlacedWent to higher studiesMedian salary
2021-221201170Rs 14,28,000
2022-231279431Rs 18,23,000
2023-241361306Rs 19,10,000

Rs 19,10,000 for the 2023-24 residents against Rs 14,10,000 for the newest MBBS batch is the gap worth holding on to. An MBBS median is a snapshot of doctors who are mostly on their way somewhere else; the residency figure is the one that reads as a finished result.

Seat Matrix

MGMCRI's MBBS sanction has been frozen for a decade. Every one of the five admission years from 2019-20 to 2023-24 carries the same 250 in the NIRF 2025 data submission, and the college dates that ceiling to 2014, when the Medical Council of India raised its intake to 250, per the history page. Postgraduate sanction is where the movement has been.

Against that ceiling, the counselling matrix shows how the MBBS seats are actually offered. There is only one division inside it, and it is not a category split.

Rankings

Rank 42 and an overall score of 52.42 in the NIRF 2025 medical ranking hide a spread that is odd even for a table full of uneven institutions. MGMCRI's best parameter is the best in the country; its worst is close to the worst on the list.

NIRF 2025 medical parameterMGMCRI score
Outreach and Inclusivity80.33
Graduation Outcomes75.91
Teaching, Learning and Resources71.92
Research and Professional Practice22.23
Perception9.68

Take the top row first. Nothing in the NIRF 2025 medical ranking beats 80.33 on Outreach and Inclusivity, not the colleges in the top ten and not the national institutes above them. That parameter counts the spread of students by region and gender, the share drawn from socially and economically weaker groups, and the provision made for students with disabilities, so it describes who gets admitted rather than how well they are taught. The 1,173 out-of-state undergraduates in the college's NIRF 2025 data submission are effectively the whole of the explanation.

The bottom row runs the other way. Perception, built from what academics, employers and the public say when surveyed, comes in at 9.68, the fifth lowest of the 50 scores in that table, with research and professional practice not far above it at 22.23. Filling the wards, finishing the degree on time and drawing students from every state has not yet translated into a reputation, and the framework measures the two things separately for exactly that reason.

One further table carries this college's name without being about it. Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth is ranked 67th among universities in NIRF 2025 with a score of 50.46, listed there as Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth Mahatma Gandhi Medical College Campus. That label is close enough to the college's own name to be quoted as though it were the college's rank. It is not: 42 belongs to the college, 67 to the university.

Facilities & Infrastructure

A medical course is only as good as the hospital bolted to it, and this one runs at 1,400 of its 1,423 beds on an average day, a figure the college filed for the whole of calendar 2023 in its NIRF 2025 data submission. Outpatients averaged 3,300 a day on top of that. Twenty-three beds of slack, held across a whole year, is the difference between a clinical posting that is work and one that is watching.

The college's own documents do not agree with that count or with each other. The hospital facilities note calls the institute 1,380-bedded; the history page says 1,350. The spread is small enough to ignore and a good reason to take any campus figure from a document you can date. The facilities note earns its place for what it lists rather than what it counts: modular operation theatres, the full run of intensive care units, a blood bank, an NABL-accredited central laboratory, and recognition of the hospital as a centre for the MRCP PACES examination of the United Kingdom.

Inside the capital budget, the library is the line that moved. Library spending went from Rs 3,63,37,966 in 2021-22 to Rs 7,33,59,077 in 2022-23 and Rs 15,29,01,547 in 2023-24, close to a quadrupling in two years, while new laboratory equipment sat at Rs 15,65,29,603 after a higher year before it, per the same filing. Research has its own address on campus: the Central Interdisciplinary Research Facility occupies a little over 6,000 sq ft, alongside a medical simulation centre and electronic learning facilities, per the college's history page.

On access the return stops short of a clean yes. MGMCRI answers "more than 80% of the buildings" to both the lift-or-ramp question and the accessible-toilet question, and a plain yes to wheelchairs and transport between buildings, in that NIRF submission. The 80% wording is the college's own, so a candidate with a mobility need is entitled to ask which buildings fall outside it and whether their departments are among them.

Faculty

Doctoral output here is climbing off a very low base. Counting full-time and part-time together, MGMCRI awarded 2 doctorates in 2021-22, 15 in 2022-23 and 21 in 2023-24, with 118 full-time and 46 part-time scholars still on the rolls, in its NIRF 2025 data submission. That is a busier pipeline than the research and professional practice score of 22.23 in the NIRF 2025 medical ranking prepares you for.

Sponsored research moved the opposite way on count and the right way on money. The same filing records 62 projects from 44 funding agencies worth Rs 10,27,65,000 in 2021-22, then 33 projects from 17 agencies at Rs 13,19,80,646, then 30 projects from 15 agencies at Rs 14,05,62,959 in 2023-24. A third of the agencies and a third more money means fewer, larger grants and a narrower base of funders to lose.

Set 198 against the load. That is how many faculty members the college entered in the same submission, against 1,250 undergraduates, 454 postgraduate residents and 1,423 hospital beds. Each of those posts is a ward round, a laboratory and a lecture in one appointment, so the number worth looking up is not this one but the department list for the specialty you want, on the college's own site.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

Five bodies have put their name to some part of this campus, and it is worth knowing which one signed off on what. Course recognition sits with the medical regulator: the Medical Council of India recognised the institute in 2001, the year the first MBBS batch was admitted, per the hospital's own facilities note, and the National Medical Commission holds that function now.

NAAC assessed Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, not MGMCRI. The A++ grade quoted across the college's pages, including its accreditation and rankings page, was awarded to the deemed university as a whole and covers every faculty inside it. Reading it as a mark earned by the medical college on its own is reading it one level too low.

The hospital carries the marks that a clinical student should actually weigh. It holds entry-level pre-accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers, its central laboratory holds a re-accreditation certificate from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, and the Quality Council of India issued it an Ayushman Bharat PMJAY gold quality standards certification in 2022, all listed on the same accreditation and rankings page. Entry-level pre-accreditation is the first rung of the NABH ladder rather than full accreditation, which matters if you are setting the badge against a hospital holding the full certificate. The hospital also describes itself as the first teaching hospital in the Puducherry union territory to be accredited by NABH.

Aid

Scholarships

MGMCRI publishes no scholarship scheme of its own. What its NIRF 2025 data submission does record is who ended up paying less, and the government column in that return is a zero. Of 491 socially challenged undergraduates, the state and central governments fully reimbursed none. The institution's own funds covered 252, private bodies covered 170, and 69 got no full waiver at all.

The postgraduate half of the same filing repeats the pattern at a smaller scale: 168 socially challenged residents, 81 covered from institution funds, 67 by private bodies, 20 covered by nothing, and a government column that is zero again.

Two things follow for anyone budgeting five years. A state scholarship you are counting on may not travel to a deemed seat, and the only useful moment to find that out is before you accept an allotment, in writing, from whoever runs the scheme. And most of the aid that does land here comes from private bodies, which in practice means trusts, employers and community funds approached one at a time rather than a scheme with an application window.

Student Reviews

Expertie holds no verified student-satisfaction score for MGMCRI, and a star average collected by a site that also sells counselling is not a measurement anyone can act on. The only reputation number computed at arm's length is NIRF's perception parameter, and MGMCRI's is 9.68 in NIRF 2025, the fifth lowest of the 50 medical scores.

Hold that against 75.91 for graduation outcomes and 80.33 for outreach, and the split is the honest summary of the place: it does the measurable things well and is barely known for them. Which half matters depends on what you are buying. A selection committee reading your CV in ten years sits nearer the perception figure. The five years you actually spend sit nearer the other two. For the part no parameter reaches, start from the college's own department pages and put the question to someone already training in the specialty you would join.
