Two documents filed by the same institute disagree about hiring. The counselling profile NIT Raipur lodges with JoSAA tells applicants that around 90 per cent of its students are placed every year; the placement office's own sheet for the 2025-26 season records 635 of 860 eligible undergraduates finishing with a single job offer. The other number that decides an admission here is which state you sat Class 12 in: computer science closed at 21,942 for a Chhattisgarh candidate in 2026 and at 14,698 for everyone else.

Overview

This is the rare NIT that was never a Regional Engineering College. It opened on 1st May 1956 as the Government College of Mining and Metallurgy, set up because only three technical institutes in the whole country then taught mining and metallurgical engineering and the region's mineral belt needed engineers of its own; the first session began that July with 15 students in each of the two subjects (NIT Raipur genesis). Rajendra Prasad laid the foundation stone on 14th September 1956 and Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the finished building on 14th March 1963.

The name changed as the subject list grew. Civil, mechanical and electrical engineering arrived in 1958-59 and the college became the Government College of Engineering and Technology; chemical engineering followed in 1965, architecture in 1984, electronics in 1985, information technology and computer science in 2000, and biotechnology and biomedical engineering in 2003 (genesis). Central status came late. The college was declared a National Institute of Technology on 1st December 2005 and an Institute of National Importance in May 2007 under the National Institute of Technology Act 2007 (NIT Raipur at a Glance), which leaves it half a century older than its own designation.

Chhattisgarh and the rest of India fill this campus in near-equal numbers. Of 4,156 undergraduates on the four-year programmes, 2,093 gave a home-state address and 2,057 came from other states, with 6 from outside the country, and the roll adds 185 on two-year postgraduate programmes and 54 on the three-year MCA (NIRF 2025 engineering data return). That balance is written into the counselling matrix rather than produced by demand.

NIT Raipur appears on two national tables and they read very differently. It takes rank 86 with a score of 47.59 in engineering, the lower third of that list, and rank 35 with 51.30 in architecture (NIRF 2025 engineering ranking, NIRF 2025 architecture ranking). One department here is a national top-40 school inside an institute the same ministry places 86th.

Courses & Fees

Twelve undergraduate programmes and eleven postgraduate ones are taught here, and the counselling profile picks two of the postgraduate list out by name: the MCA, and an M.Tech in applied geology (JoSAA institute profile, NIT Raipur). Doctoral work runs across 18 disciplines of science and technology (NIT Raipur at a Glance).

The undergraduate fee sheet is common to B.Tech and B.Arch and it front-loads almost everything. Tuition holds at Rs 62,500 a semester throughout the degree; the opening semester then adds a one-time admission fee of Rs 2,200, an institute development fee of Rs 22,000, an alumni activity fee of Rs 2,200, a convocation fee of Rs 2,750 and a refundable caution deposit of Rs 10,000, which is why the first bill of Rs 1,11,680 towers over the Rs 70,530 charged in the second (information bulletin for B.Tech and B.Arch admissions 2026-27).

What you actually hand over on reporting day is a smaller and far more variable figure, because the partial admission fee already paid during counselling is set against it and tuition itself is means-tested. A general, OBC-NCL or EWS candidate from a family earning above Rs 5 lakh pays a balance of Rs 41,680; the same candidate from a household in the Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh band pays Rs 13, carried to the second semester; a family below Rs 1 lakh pays nothing; and an SC, ST or PwD candidate pays Rs 19,180 (information bulletin 2026-27). Thirteen rupees is not a printing error, and no other line on the sheet shows so plainly how much the income slab decides.

One piece of paper controls which of those four rows applies to you. Remission is granted only against a family income certificate from a competent authority such as a District Magistrate, District Collector, Sub-Divisional Magistrate or Tahsildar, issued on or after 01/04/2026, and the bulletin states in as many words that without a valid certificate no remission is given (information bulletin 2026-27). A certificate dated a week too early costs a general-category family the whole tuition line for the year.

Admissions

Undergraduate seats are filled from a JEE Main rank read through JoSAA and then through the CSAB special rounds; foreign nationals enter separately under DASA, and the postgraduate programmes run on GATE through CCMT, IIT JAM through CCMN, and NIMCET for the MCA (NIT Raipur admission pages, M.Tech admissions notice). No institute test, portfolio or interview sits anywhere in the undergraduate route, so the rank is the whole of it.

Physical verification is spread across seven dates, and the branch you were allotted, not your own convenience, fixes which one you travel on. In the 2026-27 cycle architecture and computer science reported on 13/08/2026, bio medical and electrical on 14/08/2026, biotechnology and electronics and communication on 16/08/2026, chemical and information technology on 17/08/2026, civil and mechanical on 18/08/2026, mining and metallurgical on 19/08/2026, and anyone still unreported on 20/08/2026, with the induction programme opening on 21/08/2026 (information bulletin 2026-27). Independence Day falls inside that window and nothing was verified on it.

Before travelling, a candidate completes a provisional admission entry on the institute's own management information system using the JEE Main application number and date of birth; the link reaches the registered email a day or two before the reporting date, and the confirmation it generates has to be produced at the help desk counter (information bulletin 2026-27). Filling that form is not itself an admission: an entry found at verification to have skipped a step is removed from the institute database and the candidate is treated as unadmitted.

The rule that should most change how a choice list is filled here came from the senate rather than from counselling. Branch sliding for B.Tech programmes has been withdrawn by a resolution of the 52nd Senate, and no branch change is available after the second semester for the 2025-26 admission batch and onward (JoSAA institute profile, information bulletin 2026-27). Entering through a quieter branch and working across to computing after a strong first year is a route this campus has closed.

Cutoff

The Chhattisgarh quota is worth a great deal here, and its size is the first thing a candidate from the state should measure. In the 2026 season a general-category applicant in the home-state pool took computer science at a closing rank of 21,942, while the same branch closed at 14,698 for an applicant from any other state, and the pattern repeats down the whole demand order (NIT Raipur JEE Main cutoff, round 5, 2026).

Branch, general category, JEE Main 2026 closing rankChhattisgarh, gender-neutralChhattisgarh, female-onlyOther states, gender-neutralOther states, female-only

Mechanical Engineering61,91660,32031,70448,431
Chemical Engineering66,84867,33235,65546,127

Two rows in that table run against expectation, and any candidate planning around the female-only pool should stop on them. Inside Chhattisgarh, electronics and communication closed tighter for women than for the gender-neutral list, at 37,732 against 43,805, and mechanical engineering did the same at 60,320 against 61,916 (2026 cutoff). The supernumerary pool is a separate list rather than an easier one, and in a branch this size a handful of applicants moves it several thousand ranks.

Every reserved list runs the same way round as the general one, with the home-state column the looser of the two. In computer science the SC list closed at 2,731 for other states and 5,593 inside Chhattisgarh, ST at 1,312 and 1,558, OBC-NCL at 5,285 and 10,908, and EWS at 2,429 and 6,739 (2026 category-wise cutoff). Architecture is sat on a different paper and fills a much shorter list: taking all categories together it closed at 935 for other states and 2,738 for Chhattisgarh in 2026, against 1,070 and 6,399 a year earlier.

Read across every category and branch and the band is very wide. JoSAA closed at 57,731 in the other-state pool and 1,46,547 in the home-state pool in 2026, against 56,483 and 1,16,282 in 2025, with the CSAB special rounds running past both (cutoff trends). Every rank quoted in this section has been collated by an outside compiler from the allotment rounds rather than read off the counselling body's own sheet. NIT Raipur publishes JoSAA's opening and closing ranks itself, on its admission page, together with an archive reaching back to 2016 and a separate CSAB special-round file (NIT Raipur admission pages), and that is what to read your own branch and category off before a choice list is locked.

Placements

The Training and Placement department issues two documents each session, a summary approved by the senate and a branch-by-branch report, and only reading both gives an honest answer about hiring here. The 2025-26 summary records 860 eligible undergraduates, 713 offers and 635 students holding a single offer, a placement rate of 73.95 per cent, on an undergraduate average package of Rs 12.39 lakh and a median of Rs 10.00 lakh (placement details 2025-26).

An institute average hides almost everything a branch choice decides, and the branch report is where the spread appears. Computer science recorded an average of Rs 21.00 lakh on a median of Rs 15 lakh, information technology Rs 18.26 lakh on Rs 14.15 lakh and electronics and communication Rs 16.41 lakh on Rs 12 lakh, while the core branches sat on medians between Rs 7.5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh and architecture finished on an average of Rs 5.73 lakh (branch-wise placement details 2025-26).

Being hired and being paid well are separate outcomes at this campus, and no branch delivers both at the top. Electrical engineering put 90 of a 115-strong batch into jobs on a median of Rs 8 lakh, while bio medical engineering placed 9 of 39 on a median of Rs 10 lakh (branch-wise details 2025-26). A large core branch offers the better odds of an offer; a small one offers a thinner shot at a better number.

Across two seasons the money moved and the hit rate did not. In 2024-25 the same office counted 924 eligible undergraduates, 709 offers and 682 placed on a single offer, a rate of 73.81 per cent, on an average of Rs 11.07 lakh and a median of Rs 9.2 lakh, with a highest package of Rs 60 lakh, a lowest of Rs 3.66 lakh and 135 recruiting companies (placement details 2024-25). A year later 217 companies came instead of 135, the median rose to Rs 10.00 lakh and the average to Rs 12.39 lakh, and the single-offer rate landed at 73.95 per cent (placement details 2025-26). Better pay and more recruiters for the same share of the batch, on an eligible pool that had itself shrunk from 924 to 860.

Postgraduate hiring is the weaker half of the record, and the M.Tech is the weakest part of it. Of 216 eligible postgraduates in 2025-26, 107 were placed on a single offer at a median of Rs 6.60 lakh, and the MCA carried most of that on its own with 73 offers against 90 eligible students, while M.Tech energy and environment and M.Tech urban planning placed nobody at all (placement details 2025-26).

A second filing, made to the Ministry of Education rather than to the senate, covers three cohorts instead of one. NIT Raipur reported 724 of 1,000 four-year undergraduates placed in 2023-24 at a median salary of Rs 8,50,000, against 734 of 969 at Rs 9,50,000 the year before and 627 of 816 at Rs 9,00,000 before that, with 49 students moving on to higher studies in the most recent of the three (NIRF 2025 engineering data return). Set against three consecutive years in that band, the counselling profile's line that around 90 per cent of students are placed every year is the most generous figure the institute publishes about itself (JoSAA institute profile), and the dated sheets from the placement office are the ones to budget against.

Architecture needs its own line, because its numbers sit a long way below the engineering ones. The architecture return records 49 students graduating in 2023-24, 24 of them placed, at a median salary of Rs 3,00,000 (NIRF 2025 architecture data return). The same programme is a national top-40 school and a bottom-of-the-sheet earner at once, and both facts come from the institute's own filings.

Seat Matrix

The counselling matrix carries 1,159 undergraduate seats and splits them between Chhattisgarh and the rest of the country branch by branch rather than as one pooled total (JoSAA institute profile, NIT Raipur). Where a branch holds an odd number, the extra seat goes to one side or the other, which is why electrical engineering leaves the other-state list one seat ahead while mechanical and metallurgical engineering both leave it one behind.

Almost every female-only place here is carved out of a branch's own sanctioned capacity, and exactly one seat in the whole matrix is added on top of it. Computer science in the Chhattisgarh pool holds 45 gender-neutral places and 12 female-only ones inside a capacity of 57, while bio medical engineering is the single branch carrying a female supernumerary seat, in the Chhattisgarh half, which is why the intake page prints 80 against it with a footnote where the two branches nearest it in size print 79 (JoSAA seat breakup, undergraduate intake). A female candidate reading that column as extra capacity will overestimate her odds in every branch but one.

Sanctioned capacity has barely moved in four years while the postgraduate side has been cut. The institute recorded an approved undergraduate intake of 1,119 for both 2023-24 and 2022-23 and 1,118 for the two years before those, against a two-year postgraduate sanction of 156 that had stood at 187 a year earlier (NIRF 2025 engineering data return). What the matrix distributes each June is a settled number, so competition for it is decided entirely by who applies.

Rankings

Rank 86 on a score of 47.59 puts NIT Raipur in the lower third of the 2025 engineering table, and the five parameter scores underneath it are where the useful information sits (NIRF 2025 engineering ranking).

NIRF 2025 engineering parameterScore
Teaching, Learning and Resources54.86
Research and Professional Practice39.87
Graduation Outcomes66.26
Outreach and Inclusivity54.45
Perception4.77

One of those five is far out of line with the rest, and the campus one place above shows what it costs. Against NIT Kurukshetra at rank 85, Raipur scores 54.86 on teaching, learning and resources to Kurukshetra's 53.75, and 39.87 on research and professional practice to its 37.48; on graduation outcomes the two are 66.26 and 66.64. On perception they are 4.77 and 17.45 (NIRF 2025 engineering ranking). Raipur is ahead of the institute above it on two of the four measured pillars and loses the position on reputation alone.

The architecture department is scored on its own paper and comes out somewhere else entirely. It holds rank 35 with 51.30, made up of 54.21 for teaching, learning and resources, 46.13 for research and professional practice, 60.98 for graduation outcomes, 62.81 for outreach and inclusivity and 19.07 for perception (NIRF 2025 architecture ranking). Its research score and its perception score both run well clear of the engineering side's, on a department of 218 students (NIRF 2025 architecture data return).

Departments

Nineteen departments and units run their own faculty pages, and the two the institute opened with are still among them. Mining engineering and metallurgical and materials engineering sit alongside civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, computer science, electronics and communication, information technology, bio medical engineering, bio technology and applied geology, with chemistry, mathematics, physics, humanities and social sciences, computer applications, architecture and the central workshop making up the rest (department-wise faculty list). Applied geology is the department the counselling profile reaches for when it describes the postgraduate list, and it carries the M.Tech of the same name (JoSAA institute profile).

One research centre is listed in its own right rather than under a department, the Centre of Space and Interplanetary Exploration (COSINE, NIT Raipur). Choosing between the computing branches here and the earth and materials ones is closer to choosing between two institutes than between two syllabi: different laboratories, different doctoral supervision, different recruiters. Whichever half you are heading for, that department's own pages will tell you more than any institute-wide average.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The central library is a more digital operation than its shelf count suggests. It holds more than a lakh of print books and more than 1.7 lakh e-books, runs on LibSys7 with a working web catalogue, has RFID installed in the reading room, and offers remote access along with Turnitin and URKUND for plagiarism checking, serving close to 5,000 users across faculty, staff, students and research scholars (NIT Raipur Central Library).

Computing and sport are the other two visible commitments. The central computer centre seats 400 across roughly 2,300 square metres on an optical LAN backbone, the gymnasium runs to about 2,000 square feet, and there is a cricket ground and a handball ground, with badminton courts and table tennis inside each hostel (NIT Raipur at a Glance).

Capital spending in 2023-24 divided very unevenly across the three academic lines the ranking return breaks out. Laboratory equipment and software took Rs 3,06,72,070, the library took Rs 1,81,21,341, and the engineering workshops took Rs 34,30,395 (NIRF 2025 engineering data return). On a campus founded on mining and metallurgy, the workshop line is the one a core-branch applicant should read twice.

Hostel

A bed here is not part of the admission. The bulletin says that only a limited number of seats exist for boys and girls, that they are allotted strictly on merit and category, and that candidates should make alternative arrangements if they do not get one (information bulletin 2026-27). For a first-year student arriving from outside Raipur, that single paragraph deserves more planning than any row on the fee sheet.

Boys have five hostels on the campus and girls three (NIT Raipur hostels), and none of those beds is bought with the institute fee. Hostel charges are handled separately and only once a seat has actually been allotted, at a hostel admission counter on the campus rather than during online reporting, and the boys' and girls' hostel pages carry each year's allotment lists and fee notices (information bulletin 2026-27). Costing a year here from the fee sheet alone will leave the total short.

Faculty

Just under three hundred teachers carry a student roll several times their size. The engineering ranking submission entered 272 faculty members and the architecture one another 21, set against 4,156 undergraduates, 185 two-year postgraduates and 54 students on the MCA (NIRF 2025 engineering data return, NIRF 2025 architecture data return).

A large share of what those staff do is doctoral supervision. The institute reported 437 full-time and 221 part-time Ph.D. scholars on the roll and awarded 57 full-time and 28 part-time doctorates in 2023-24 (NIRF 2025 engineering data return). Research grant income is modest next to the testing and advisory work: 93 sponsored projects from 21 funding agencies brought in Rs 4,32,09,839 in 2023-24, while 179 consultancy projects for 202 client organisations brought in Rs 4,15,33,822 across the same year.

Nearly as much money from consultancy as from research grants, spread across almost twice as many jobs, describes laboratories that spend much of their time working for regional industry. For the core departments that is the most useful thing an applicant can know, and a better argument for one of them than any placement average.

Notable Alumni

The Career Development Centre keeps a page of alumni it calls role models, and what stands out on it is how much of the leadership is state-owned rather than technology (NIT Raipur alumni role models). Sudhir Vasudeva, chemical engineering 1975, went on to chair ONGC; R. Madhavan, mechanical engineering 1982, became chairman and managing director of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited; Santosh Sharma, electrical engineering 1982, led Hindustan Copper; Prabhat Kumar Sinha, mining engineering 1982, headed Northern Coalfields; Pradip Kumar Satpathy, mining engineering 1983, became director of production at NMDC; and Prakash Tiwari, mechanical engineering 1981, director of operations at NTPC.

Not everyone on that page went into a state enterprise. Abidali Z. Neemuchwala, electronics 1990, became chief executive of Wipro; Anurag Mairal, chemical engineering 1990, is a professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine; the late Baldev Raj, metallurgy 1969 and a Padma Shri, directed the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research; and Budhaditya Mukherjee, metallurgy 1977, is a Padma Bhushan sitar player (alumni role models). So much mining, metals and energy leadership on one page is the founding subject list surfacing two generations later.

News & Articles

Nothing about money here is binding until it carries a circular number. The fee structure in force for 2026-27 was issued as circular NITRR/R-1/2026/816 dated 16/04/2026, and the admission bulletin reproduces that circular rather than paraphrasing it (information bulletin 2026-27). A fee figure that cannot be traced back to a numbered circular has no standing at the counter.

The change worth carrying into the next cycle is the senate's withdrawal of branch sliding, which binds the 2025-26 admission batch and every one after it (JoSAA institute profile). Removing the one internal route between branches alters how a choice list should be filled here long before it alters anything visible on the campus.

College Compare

Inside Chhattisgarh there is very little to compare against. Two institutions from the state reach the 2025 engineering table at all, IIT Bhilai at rank 72 with 50.37 and NIT Raipur at 86 with 47.59 (NIRF 2025 engineering ranking), and only one of the two reads a Chhattisgarh candidate on a home-state list. The state quota is not a category here, it is a single campus.

Measured against the NIT system, this campus sits inside a tight cluster rather than below a gap. MANIT Bhopal ranks 81 on 48.26, NIT Jamshedpur 82 on 48.25, NIT Meghalaya 83 on 48.21 and NIT Kurukshetra 85 on 47.98, every one of them within a single point of Raipur's 47.59 (NIRF 2025 engineering ranking). Those four and Raipur are separated by less score than the parameter tables above vary by, so the ordering should decide nothing on its own. The branch, the pool your Class 12 state puts you in, and the rank you can actually reach should decide it instead.

Contact & Location

The campus sits on G. E. Road inside the city rather than outside it, about 5 kilometres from Raipur railway station on the Mumbai to Howrah route of South East Central Railway and about 20 kilometres from the airport (information bulletin 2026-27).

Ask that help desk one thing before anything else: the reporting date attached to your own allotted branch. This institute has been splitting reporting across seven dates by branch, and turning up on the wrong one costs a day out of a window barely a week long.

Verified

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

There is no grade in this institute's standing, because no grading body issues one to it. Parliament placed NIT Raipur on the schedule of Institutions of National Importance under the National Institute of Technology Act 2007, in May 2007, having declared it a National Institute of Technology on 1st December 2005 (NIT Raipur at a Glance). Do not go looking for a NAAC grade against this name either: the accreditation data behind these pages carries no NAAC cycle for the campus, and none is owed, since the Act that created it is the recognition.

Programme-level accreditation is the part that varies by branch, and the live list is shorter than the institute's own summary suggests. That summary, published in 2021, names civil, chemical and mechanical engineering among the accredited undergraduate programmes and machine design, thermal engineering, industrial engineering and management, and structural engineering among the postgraduate ones (NIT Raipur at a Glance).

Read the National Board of Accreditation's own programme register instead and the position is narrower. Chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering hold undergraduate accreditation still in force; civil engineering and all four of those postgraduate programmes have run out without a renewal appearing against them, and mining engineering and electronics have been lapsed for years (National Board of Accreditation, accredited programme register).

The branches that carry a live accreditation are the core ones. Computer science, information technology and electronics and communication, the three that close at the tightest ranks and pay the highest medians on this campus, carry none in force. That is a fact about which files the institute has kept current rather than a judgment on the teaching, and it is worth confirming against the board's register in the year you apply, since accreditation is granted for fixed terms and lapses unless it is renewed.

Scholarships

Most of the money that reduces a bill here never leaves the fee sheet, and the institute pays for it out of its own funds. The engineering return records 2,379 undergraduates on a full tuition reimbursement carried by institute funds, nothing at all reaching that group from state or central government schemes and nothing from private bodies, and 651 students receiving no full reimbursement, on a roll of 4,156 (NIRF 2025 engineering data return). Set against 761 students counted economically backward and 2,269 counted socially challenged, that is a write-off the institute has chosen to carry alone.

Above that layer sit named awards, several of them endowed by former teachers and alumni of the old Government Engineering College. They are small, tightly specified and worth applying for precisely because so few students qualify for each one.

The government money is claimed from your own state, not from the institute. Students from scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes apply to their respective state governments on that state's prescribed form, routed through the institute after joining (JoSAA institute profile). Two students sharing a hostel corridor, one from Chhattisgarh and one from Bihar, will be filing for the same kind of help with two different departments.

Student Reviews

No score out of five appears on this page, and one could not survive contact with the numbers above it. A single 2025-26 season here produced a highest package of Rs 60.3 lakh and a lowest of Rs 4.5 lakh (placement details 2025-26), and on reporting day one student handed across Rs 41,680 while the student behind them handed across Rs 13 (information bulletin 2026-27). An average built out of anonymous entries would settle in the middle of that spread and conceal both ends of it. The answerable questions are narrower: how your particular branch was taught and hired over the last two seasons, and whether its students got hostel seats. Both have real answers, and the people holding them are sitting in that branch and in those hostels now.
