Amity University
Amity University Kolkata is a private university at Rajarhat, New Town, in North 24 Parganas, set up by a West Bengal law of 2014, and it is a different legal body from the Amity flagship in Noida. Its one numbered place in NIRF 2025 is 25th in Architecture and Planning, on a return that covers the B.Arch of its Amity School of Architecture and Planning together with a four-year undergraduate stream.
Because both campuses appear in NIRF simply as "Amity University", the quickest check on any Amity figure is the district printed beside it: Gautam Budh Nagar means Noida, North Twenty Four Parganas means this campus.
Overview
The West Bengal Legislature passed the Amity University Act, 2014 as West Bengal Act XXIV of 2014, and the Law Department published it in the Kolkata Gazette on 21.1.2015 under Notification No. 83L (About Amity University Kolkata). The Act incorporates the university "at Rajarhat, New Town" as a self-financed unitary University, sponsored by the Ritnand Balved Education Foundation, a society registered in New Delhi, and fixes its headquarters on the campus there (The Amity University Act, 2014).
The Act makes it a self-financed unitary University, and the self-disclosure enters "NA" against constituent units, affiliated colleges and off-campus centres (Public Self Disclosure). The Act's land schedule describes about 9.98 acres, in plots 36, 37 and 38 of Action Area-II in Mouza-Kadampukur (The Amity University Act, 2014).
That acreage is worth holding onto, because the campus homepage carries Amity-wide counters, "1,50,000" students and a "110 Acres" campus among them, which are not Kolkata's (Amity University Kolkata). The same site's "Why Amity Kolkata" page says those student numbers describe the whole group of 13 Universities (Why Amity Kolkata).
Who runs it, per the university's own public self-disclosure: Dr. Atul Chauhan is Chancellor, Dr. Ashok K Srivastava is Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Amrita Saha is Registrar, and the postal address is Major Arterial Road, Rajarhat, New Town, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal 700135 (Public Self Disclosure, Amity University Kolkata). Under section 10 of the Act the Governor of West Bengal is the Visitor, with power to call for papers and order an inspection of the university's buildings, laboratories and departments (The Amity University Act, 2014).
Courses & Fees
The campus lists 25 schools and institutes for 2024-25, from Amity Law School and Amity School of Engineering & Technology to single-programme units such as the Amity School of Architecture & Planning, whose only entry is the Bachelor of Architecture (Academic Programmes 2024-25). Design sits apart from it: the Bachelor of Interior Design belongs to the Amity School of Design, Kolkata (Interior Design programmes).
The two course pages publish one fee figure each, in lakh rupees, under the heading "1st Year Non Sponsored Semester Fee".
| Programme at the Kolkata campus | Teaching unit | Duration | Printed fee (Rs lakh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Architecture | Amity School of Architecture & Planning, Kolkata | 5 years | 1.09 |
| Bachelor of Interior Design | Amity School of Design, Kolkata | 4 years | 0.715 |
That heading names both a year and a semester, so ask the admissions office whether the B.Arch figure of Rs 1.09 lakh covers one semester of year one or the whole first year before building a five-year budget on it (Architecture programmes). Neither page prints hostel, mess or examination charges, and the "Two Degrees" line beneath each fee refers to an optional online degree a student can take alongside the full-time one.
Fees are not a free hand for the university. Section 5(1) of the Act says tuition for professional courses such as engineering and management is set by the university with the approval of the State Government (The Amity University Act, 2014). If a student withdraws before the course commences, the admission regulations return the fee after deducting Rs 1000 (Regulations for Admission and Enrolment).
Admissions
For the B.Arch, the Kolkata course page sets two gates: Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at an aggregate of 50%, or a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics at 50%, and a qualifying result in "NATA / JEE of the current year" (Architecture programmes). The aggregate is worked out on English, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry together, so a strong science score can still fall short if English drags the four-subject average under 50%.
The page does not say which JEE paper it means, and it credits both tests to the Council of Architecture, so confirm with the admissions desk that a JEE Main architecture paper score is accepted before relying on it instead of NATA. The contact page gives the admission helpline as toll-free 18001023320 and admissions@kol.amity.edu, with reception on 033-71020-304 (Contact, Amity University Kolkata).
How the University Selects
Amity Kolkata's regulations list the modes it may use: its own Amity Common Admission Test (AMCAT) followed by group discussion and/or interview; CAT, MAT or GMAT scores followed by the same; or qualifying-examination marks followed by a written test and/or group discussion. They also allow admission on a "merit-cum-first-come-first-served basis" to candidates who meet the minimum eligibility (Regulations for Admission and Enrolment). Those rules are written for every programme. The B.Arch course page itself mentions no AMCAT, written test, group discussion or interview; the only gates it states are the Class XII marks and a NATA or JEE qualification (Architecture programmes).
The Act frames all of this. Section 34 says merit may come from qualifying marks, an entrance test the university conducts, or a state or national common entrance test, and that a regulatory body's course-specific admission criteria must be followed, which for the B.Arch is why the NATA or JEE requirement sits on top of the Class XII marks (The Amity University Act, 2014).
Is WBJEE a Route In?
Not on current evidence. Section 34(3) of the Act ties engineering, technology and management seats to the All India entrance framework or to the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board's counselling "until the University opts to work out its own entrance examination", but WBJEEB's participating-institutions page lists nine private universities, from Adamas University to Techno India University, and Amity University Kolkata is not one of them (WBJEEB participating institutions, The Amity University Act, 2014). On that list, WBJEE counselling is not a way into Amity Kolkata's seats, the B.Arch included.
Domicile does count in one way. Section 5(3) obliges the university to reserve seats for students domiciled in West Bengal up to at least twenty-five percent of its total student number (The Amity University Act, 2014). The quota is counted on the university's total enrolment, so one studio batch can lean heavily towards students from other states.
Cutoff
Neither the B.Arch course page nor the admission regulations publish a closing mark or rank for Amity Kolkata. The regulations say only that, for an entrance test, candidates are tabulated at every score point and the cut-off percentage for each programme is decided with the approval of the Chairman of the Admission Committee; they do not require that cut-off to be made public (Regulations for Admission and Enrolment).
What an applicant can plan against are the published floors: a 50% aggregate in English, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics plus a current-year NATA or JEE qualification (Architecture programmes). Because the campus is outside WBJEEB counselling, a closing rank quoted for Amity Kolkata on a WBJEE cut-off list would not be an official one.
Placements
Outcome data for the B.Arch comes only from the architecture returns the university files with NIRF, where the five-year programme is the B.Arch.
| B.Arch graduating year | Graduated in minimum time | Placed | Median salary | Went to higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020-21 | 31 | 14 | Rs 2,22,000 | 6 |
| 2021-22 | 20 | 8 | Rs 2,16,000 | 5 |
| 2022-23 | 29 | 24 | Rs 7,65,000 | 5 |
| 2023-24 | 21 | 15 | Rs 3,45,600 | 3 |
| Filed figures: NIRF 2024 architecture data, IR-A-U-0779, NIRF 2025 architecture data, IR-A-U-0779. |
Those medians do not climb in a line. The class of 2022-23 filed Rs 7,65,000 with 24 of 29 placed, and the next class dropped back to Rs 3,45,600 with 15 of 21 placed (NIRF 2025 architecture data). Across the four classes, between 8 and 24 graduates were placed, so a handful of offers is enough to move the median by lakhs. The copy of the 2025 return posted on the campus NIRF documents page does not match the published file for the 2023-24 class, giving a higher placed count and a higher median, so the table follows NIRF's own file (Architecture NIRF 2025 file, NIRF 2025 architecture data).
Alongside the B.Arch, that filing carries an unnamed four-year undergraduate stream whose 2023-24 class placed 51 of 60 at a median of Rs 8,67,000 (NIRF 2025 architecture data). Quoting that higher median as an architecture salary would mix two different degrees.
Campus-wide claims come from a different kind of source. The placement page's title advertises a highest package of 44 Lacs, while its body gives a 2023 record of students from 63 UG and PG disciplines placed and a highest offer of INR 32.21 LPA, with no programme attached to either figure (Placements, Amity University Kolkata). The "52,000 on-campus placements" on the Why Amity page counts the Amity group as a whole (Why Amity Kolkata). B.Arch placement queries go to the Amity Centre for Career Development, where Senior Manager Gautam Shaw handles the programme alongside the law, fashion and fine arts degrees (Placement Cell and Its Activities).
Seat Matrix
Three official documents give three different sizes for the same B.Arch. The Council of Architecture approves 40 seats a year for 2026-2027, NIRF filings enter a sanctioned intake of 20 for 2023-24, and the university's UGC inspection proforma for 2024-25 records a sanctioned intake of 15 for 2024-25 with 9 students actually enrolled (COA approved institutions, UG 2026, NIRF 2025 architecture data, UGC inspection proforma).
The NIRF "sanctioned" row behaves more like a count of admissions than an approval.
| Academic year | B.Arch intake entered in NIRF filing | First-year students admitted |
|---|---|---|
| 2017-18 | 26 | 26 |
| 2018-19 | 28 | 29 |
| 2019-20 | 21 | 21 |
| 2020-21 | 17 | Not in this filing |
| 2021-22 | 12 | Not in this filing |
| 2022-23 | 5 | Not in this filing |
| 2023-24 | 20 | Not in this filing |
The entry of 5 for 2022-23 is far below the 40 the Council approves for 2026-2027, and for 2018-19 the same filing shows 29 admitted against an intake of 28 (NIRF 2025 architecture data, COA approved institutions, UG 2026).
Who fills the seats is on record too. The 2025 filing's roll of 74 B.Arch students includes 39 women, and only 15 of the 74 are from West Bengal, against 55 from elsewhere in India and 4 international students (NIRF 2025 architecture data). No category-wise seat table is published for this campus.
Rankings
NIRF has placed the Kolkata architecture school 25th of 40 twice, sharing the spot in 2024 with Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, on 54.71 and holding it alone in 2025, and it did not appear in the architecture list before 2024 (NIRF 2024 Architecture, NIRF 2025 Architecture and Planning).
| NIRF year | Rank | Score | Teaching, learning, resources | Research, professional practice | Graduation outcomes | Outreach, inclusivity | Perception |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 25 | 54.71 | 72.63 | 1.73 | 76.79 | 75.05 | 24.51 |
| 2025 | 25 | 55.49 | 72.06 | 5.39 | 79.65 | 83.69 | 12.89 |
| Row IR-A-U-0779, taken unchanged from NIRF's architecture tables of 2024 and 2025. |
Outreach carried the 2025 score while research barely registered. Its outreach and inclusivity mark of 83.69 was second of the 40, behind only Jamia Millia Islamia at 86.17, and its teaching and resources mark of 72.06 was sixth-highest; yet research and professional practice at 5.39 was second-lowest, above only the Faculty of Architecture and Planning at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, on 4.87 (NIRF 2025 Architecture and Planning). Perception fell from 24.51 to 12.89 in a year, yet the overall score still edged up because outreach (75.05 to 83.69), graduation outcomes (76.79 to 79.65) and research (1.73 to 5.39) all rose (NIRF 2024 Architecture).
Among West Bengal entries in the 2025 table, IIT Kharagpur was 3rd, IIEST Shibpur 4th and Jadavpur University 16th, which leaves Amity Kolkata as the state's only private university on the list (NIRF 2025 Architecture and Planning).
Bands and the 2024 Law Rank
Outside architecture the campus appears only in unordered bands, and in one law table.
| Table | NIRF 2024 | NIRF 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture and Planning | 25 | 25 |
| Law | 39 | Not listed |
| Engineering | Band 101-150 | Band 101-150 |
| Management | Band 101-125 | Band 101-125 |
| University | Band 151-200 | Band 151-200 |
| Overall | Band 151-200 | Not listed |
| Sources: the campus NIRF page for the 2024 list; NIRF's own tables for 2024 law, 2024 engineering band, 2024 management band, 2024 university band, 2024 overall band, 2025 engineering band, 2025 management band, 2025 university band and the 2025 overall bands (upper, lower). |
NIRF's 2024 law list ends with a shared 39th place on 47.94, split between this campus's law return and Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University (NIRF 2024 Law). The Kolkata NIRF page still displays that 2024 list, law rank included (NIRF, Amity University Kolkata). A "law rank 39" met elsewhere may instead be Amity University Haryana's position in the 2025 law table, which belongs to a separate university in Gurugram (NIRF 2025 Law).
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
Kolkata's campus documents describe one compact site built out in phases. The Institutional Development Plan puts it on a ten-acre plot with about 10.4 lakh sq ft of built area, developed phase-wise since 2015 and aiming for USGBC Gold certification, with a shared amenity core designed around Kolkata's "adda" culture (Institutional Development Plan). The admissions folder describes a 450,000 sq. ft. campus with over 2,200 students, less than half the development plan's built-area figure, without saying what its number measures (Admissions folder, Amity University Kolkata).
Specific facilities, as the university's disclosures list them:
- An audio-visual auditorium seating 506, plus Seminar Hall-1 and Seminar Hall-2 (Central Facilities); the admissions folder calls the auditorium a 650-seater instead (Admissions folder).
- An indoor swimming pool with a heat pump for winter use, a floodlit astroturf football field and an air-conditioned multi-court with 4 badminton courts, 1 basketball court and 2 volleyball courts, plus a squash court (Sports Facilities).
- Primary clinical care from 1 doctor and 2 nurses, with an ambulance and referral of emergencies to nearby hospitals (Health Facilities).
- An Architecture Lab among the campus laboratories (Campus laboratories).
For architecture specifically, the NIRF filing shows the studios getting money only recently: Rs 15,19,756 of capital spending on studios in 2023-24 after zero in each of the two previous years (NIRF 2025 architecture data). The library sheet for 2024-25 gives a total of 758 books, 71 of them against the Amity School of Architecture & Planning, with 23 journals and 21 magazines, and does not say whether that is the full stock or one year's additions (Library Facilities 2024-25).
Hostel
Residence is on campus and air-conditioned, but the university's hostel sheet gives two sets of numbers. Its text states a total capacity of 748, split 280 for boys and 468 for girls, while a box on the same page lists hostel strength as 428 boys and 748 girls (Hostel Details). No room or mess rate appears on it, so the charge for a place has to come from the admissions office.
Hostel
Faculty
A headcount of 27 teachers sits in Amity Kolkata's architecture filing for NIRF 2025 (NIRF 2025 architecture data). The full list, opened from the campus NIRF page, names Professor Ranjan Chattopadhyay, Associate Professor Arpan Das Gupta and assistant professors including Proma Roy, Rahul Bose, Anindita Bhattacharjee, Adityadip Chaudhury, Sayan Munshi and Aditee Prabhakar, all on regular terms, alongside teachers whose names do not appear on the architecture school's own staff roster (NIRF documents, Amity University Kolkata, Architecture NIRF 2025 file).
That roster, in the university's UGC inspection proforma, is the better record of what the studio teachers hold. It shows Ranjan Chattopadhyay with a Master of City Planning from IIT Kharagpur, Arpan Das Gupta with a PhD and M.Arch from Jadavpur University, Sumanta Deb, the school's Director on the COA list, with a PhD from IIEST Shibpur, and Proma Roy, Anindita Bhattacharjee and Adityadip Chaudhury with M.Arch degrees (UGC inspection proforma, COA approved institutions, UG 2026).
The two filings clash on qualifications. The NIRF file enters "Ph.D" against nearly every name, Chattopadhyay, Roy, Bose, Bhattacharjee and Chaudhury included, with Arpita Mondal's M.S. Architecture as the lone non-doctoral entry, whereas the proforma gives most of the same architects a master's degree as their highest and marks Aditee Prabhakar's PhD as under review (NIRF documents, Amity University Kolkata, Architecture NIRF 2025 file, UGC inspection proforma). The later 2026 file marks several teachers, Professor Siddhartha Koduru among them, as having left (Architecture NIRF 2026 file).
Research and consultancy figures also shift between returns. The 2025 filing, whose faculty list runs beyond the architecture roster, reports 11 sponsored projects worth Rs 73,35,788 in 2023-24 and no consultancy income in any of its three years (NIRF 2025 architecture data), while the 2024 filing had recorded consultancy receipts of Rs 27,00,000 for 2022-23 and Rs 26,60,100 for 2021-22 (NIRF 2024 architecture data).

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
Professional recognition for the B.Arch comes from the Council of Architecture, whose register carries Amity's Kolkata school as WB07 with a start in 2015, an intake of 40 cleared for 2026-2027, and Mr. Sumanta Deb as its Director (COA approved institutions, UG 2026). The COA row gives the address as Plot no. AA-IIA/36, 37, 38, Action Area IIA, New Town, Kolkata 700135 and names the degree-awarding body "Amity University West Bengal, Kolkata", wording that differs from the Act's "Amity University". The university's UGC inspection proforma adds approvals from the Bar Council of India for its law degrees, the Rehabilitation Council of India for clinical psychology, the National Council for Teacher Education for the B.Ed and the Pharmacy Council of India for the B.Pharm (UGC inspection proforma).
No NAAC grade is on record. Amity University Kolkata is not among the institutions on NAAC's list of valid accreditations dated 14-08-2025, which does carry Amity's universities in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan (NAAC accreditation status). The accreditation line of the university's self-disclosure cites a NIRF 2024 band and commercial rankings rather than any NAAC cycle (Public Self Disclosure).
Aid
Scholarships
Merit awards at Kolkata are set per campus on Amity's scholarship page, and Kolkata's undergraduate ladder on Class XII marks differs from Noida's and Gurugram's while matching Patna's and Ranchi's.
| Class XII aggregate, Kolkata campus | Scholarship |
|---|---|
| 93% or more | 100% |
| 88% to 92.99% | 50% |
| 70% to 87.99% | 25% |
The page limits these to Class XII results of 2026 or 2025, computes the aggregate on English plus three academic subjects, pays for the first year only with separate continuation rules, and says awards go on a first-come-first-served basis with limited seats, with 05 September 2026 set as the closing date for the 2026 intake, so later applicants should check the page for the next cycle's date (Amity Scholarship Scheme). The ladder is written for undergraduate programmes in general and does not single out the B.Arch, so confirm the award against the architecture fee line before counting on it.
A second obligation comes from the statute, not the brochure. Section 5(2) of the Act requires free-ship in tuition for at least five percent of total strength, for students from poor and economically backward classes as the State Government defines them (The Amity University Act, 2014).
The NIRF return shows how far full waivers reach on the B.Arch. The 2025 filing counts 31 students with full tuition paid from institution funds, 9 by private bodies and 5 by government, up from 9 institution-funded in the 2024 filing (NIRF 2025 architecture data, NIRF 2024 architecture data). Its column for students without full reimbursement reads 0, even though the three funded columns together account for well under the 74 students on the rolls, so treat the split as reported rather than complete.

Student Reviews
No student satisfaction survey is linked from Amity Kolkata's public self-disclosure, which runs from the Act to the telephone directory, so no student rating is shown here (Public Self Disclosure). The recruiter comments on its placement page are testimonials chosen by the university, and one of them calls Amity "an institute of national importance", a label that does not match the private-university status its Act confers (Placements, The Amity University Act, 2014).
A student with a complaint has a formal channel instead: the self-disclosure names Prof. (Dr.) Ronki Ram of Panjab University as the university's Ombudsperson and links the details of its Student Grievance Redressal Committee (Public Self Disclosure).

Gallery
The university's photo gallery currently holds a single album, titled Laboratory, and the sports facilities document pictures the pool, turf and indoor courts. The self-disclosure links a Google map pin for the Major Arterial Road campus (Public Self Disclosure).
