NIT Delhi sits 65th on the Ministry of Education's 2025 engineering ranking, below Delhi Technological University at 30 in the same city. Its own filing tells a less modest story: a 2023-24 B.Tech median salary of Rs 15,90,000, against Rs 11,00,000 at NIT Silchar and Rs 7,00,000 at NIT Patna, two NITs ranked above it. Price is the other variable worth settling early, and it is not one number: the same seat is billed at three different rates on the institute's own sheet.

Overview

The institute spent its first 12 years borrowing space. Its opening B.Tech cohort, in computer science, electronics and communication, and electrical and electronics engineering, was admitted for the 2010-11 session and taught under the mentorship of NIT Warangal; teaching then moved to a temporary site in Dwarka in June 2012, to the IAMR campus at Narela in February 2014, and only reached the purpose-built permanent campus on GT Karnal Road in February 2022 (NIT Delhi proactive disclosure, 17 July 2026).

An Act of Parliament created it in 2010 as one of 31 National Institutes of Technology, it carries Institute of National Importance status, and it runs autonomously under the Ministry of Education (proactive disclosure, About NIT Delhi). The campus covers 51 acres. Phase 1A, delivered by NBCC, is finished and holds the mini campus, the startup centre and the admin block; Phase 1B, taken up by Telecommunications Consultants India Limited, is still going up and covers the academic building, staff quarters, a hostel of 800 seats and the director's residence, with a Phase 2 proposal in progress (About NIT Delhi, proactive disclosure).

The student body it supports is small for an NIT. The NIRF 2025 return records 1,074 undergraduates and 188 postgraduates, alongside 68 full-time and 3 part-time doctoral scholars (NIT Delhi NIRF 2025 data return).

Courses & Fees

Eight B.Tech branches admit here, five more than the three the institute opened with: computer science and engineering, artificial intelligence and data sciences, electronics and communication engineering, VLSI design and technology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and civil engineering (proactive disclosure). The published curriculum archive shows how recent some of that is: nothing is filed for aerospace engineering or VLSI design and technology before the 2024-2025 scheme, while computer science and electrical carry schemes running back to the 2010-2014 batch, and a minor degree in quantum technology starts from 2025-2026 (B.Tech curriculum downloads). Nine M.Tech specialisations, an MCA and doctoral programmes sit above the B.Tech.

Three tuition rates share one fee sheet here. For 2026-27 the B.Tech structure charges Rs 62,500 a semester to a general, OBC or EWS student whose family earns above Rs 5 lakh, Rs 20,833 in the Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh band, and nothing at all in a third column that covers both the under-Rs 1 lakh band and every SC, ST and PwD candidate (NIT Delhi B.Tech fee structure 2026-27).

Total with an AC hostel roomRs 1,66,200Rs 1,24,533Rs 1,03,700

Read the one-time line before you compare that total against anything. Rs 23,700 of the first bill covers institute caution money, alumni membership, the identity card and the convocation fee, is charged once and never repeats, and Rs 20,000 of it is refundable (fee structure 2026-27). Later semesters are billed on their own sheets, which the institute publishes separately for the third, fifth and seventh semesters (NIT Delhi fee structure).

Those slabs move real money, and most of it is the institute's own. It waives more tuition out of its own budget than every government and private scheme on the campus manages together: 687 undergraduates hold a full waiver funded by institute funds, against 68 through state and central government schemes and 23 through private bodies, while 112 hold no full waiver at all (NIRF 2025 data return).

Admissions

A B.Tech seat is filled from a JEE Main rank through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, which for 2026-27 runs one allocation across 138 institutes: 23 IITs, IISc Bengaluru, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and 56 other government-funded technical institutes (Joint Seat Allocation Authority). Seats still vacant when the fifth and final JoSAA round of 2026 closed passed to the CSAB special rounds, drawn from the same NIT+ pool. JEE Advanced counts for nothing on this campus, the institute sets no entrance test of its own, and no management quota exists to fall back on.

The domicile rule is where this campus departs from the rest of the system. The institute puts it in one sentence: admission to 50% of the seats is made among students of Delhi and Chandigarh, and the remaining 50% on an all-India basis (About NIT Delhi). A Class 12 result from Chandigarh therefore counts as home state at a campus in north Delhi, which is not something the institute's own location would tell you.

Postgraduate entry never touches JoSAA. M.Tech admission runs on the GATE score, self-financed M.Tech seats are offered alongside it, and doctoral admissions, both full time and part time, are invited half-yearly (About NIT Delhi). Foreign nationals enter through the Direct Admission of Students Abroad channel instead of counselling, and the fee page carries its own DASA sheets for the B.Tech and the M.Tech plus Study in India sheets at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level (fee structure). Its return counts 32 undergraduates from outside the country and none at the postgraduate level (NIRF 2025 data return).

Cutoff

NIT Delhi publishes no cutoff of its own, and none exists before counselling opens. What gets called one afterwards is a by-product of allotment: the position of whoever was admitted last into a given branch, under a given quota and category, in a given round. JoSAA keeps that archive itself, filterable by year back to 2016 and then by round, institute, academic programme and seat type (JoSAA opening and closing ranks), and it is the only place the number for your branch is settled.

Two things specific to this campus shape where those ranks land. The first is that the headcount and the reserved pool do not describe the same group of people. Its return counts 358 undergraduates from within the state, 684 from outside it and 32 from abroad (NIRF 2025 data return), but what the institute reserves is a Delhi and Chandigarh pool, and a Chandigarh candidate lands outside Delhi in that column while sitting inside the home half at counselling. Take the reservation from the admission rule, not from the state-of-origin table.

The second is that two of the eight branches have almost no rank history to read. Aerospace engineering and VLSI design and technology have nothing in the curriculum archive earlier than the 2024-2025 scheme, where computer science and electrical go back to the 2010-2014 batch (B.Tech curriculum downloads). A trend line for either new branch covers a couple of admission cycles, which is not a trend.

Placements

Two official counts of the same year disagree here, and the reason is the denominator. NIRF's base is everyone who finished the degree in the minimum stipulated time, 161 students in 2023-24, of whom 134 took a job and 19 went on to study further, at a median of Rs 15,90,000 (NIRF 2025 data return). The Training and Placement Cell's base is everyone eligible to sit the process, 143 for the 2024 batch, of whom 133 were placed (NIT Delhi placement report, 2021 to 2025). Both are honest, and they answer different questions.

The median climbed across all three of those years while the placed count fell from 142 to 134 (NIRF 2025 data return). Offers got better for the students who got them, and slightly fewer students got them.

Branch decides more than the campus figure does. In 2025 computer science placed all 68 of its eligible students, electrical and electronics 48 of 56, and electronics and communication 35 of 51, the weakest of the three that year (placement report). Computer science has reached 100% in three of the five years the report covers.

An average hides its own spread, and this one hides a wide one. Of the students placed in 2025, 36% took offers above Rs 16 lakh while 8.8% took offers below Rs 6 lakh (placement report). Google recruited on this campus for the first time in 2025, alongside D. E. Shaw, Flipkart, Morgan Stanley and Oracle.

The M.Tech record is thinner and far more volatile: 2 of 39 eligible students placed in 2021, 33 of 50 in 2022, 16 of 54 in 2023, 15 of 94 in 2024, then 100 of 153 in 2025 at an average of Rs 8.58 lakh (placement report). Semiconductor firms carry that programme, with STMicroelectronics, MediaTek, Qualcomm, Infineon and NXP appearing across the five years.

Seat Matrix

Sanctioned undergraduate intake here doubled inside three years, which is why older cutoff commentary about this campus ages badly.

Sanctioned intake, NIRF 2025 return2020-212021-222022-232023-24
B.Tech, four years182182312362
Postgraduate, two yearsNot filedNot filed75113

No diploma holder joins in the third year here: the return files a zero against lateral entry for every year it reports (NIRF 2025 data return). Nor is the sanctioned total the number you choose against. JoSAA rebuilds a branch-level matrix before each choice-filling window, halved between the Delhi and Chandigarh pool and the all-India pool before category reservation is applied inside each half.

At the other end of the pipeline, the batch the placement cell took to market in 2026 totalled 462 students across the B.Tech and M.Tech, computer science the largest undergraduate group at 124 and civil the smallest at 28 (NIT Delhi placement brochure 2025-26).

Rankings

NIT Delhi holds rank 65 with a score of 50.79 on the NIRF 2025 engineering ranking, between Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad at 64 with 51.20 and Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology at 66 with 50.77. The margin to the NIT immediately below is too thin to carry any meaning. No other 2025 NIRF list carries its name.

NIRF 2025 engineering componentScore
Teaching, Learning and Resources62.76
Research and Professional Practice29.35
Graduation Outcomes71.26
Outreach and Inclusivity69.51
Perception19.53

Research is the component holding the rank down. At 29.35 it is well under half the graduation-outcomes score of 71.26 (NIRF 2025 engineering ranking), and the activity underneath it is small though moving quickly: 20 sponsored projects worth Rs 1,89,57,863 in 2021-22 became 32 projects worth Rs 4,77,27,298 in 2023-24, while consultancy went from a single project to 51 (NIRF 2025 data return).

The institute's own publicity has not caught up with the 2025 table. Both its about page and its 2025-26 placement brochure still lead with a 45th place in the 2024 engineering ranking (About NIT Delhi, placement brochure), well above where the 2025 ranking places it. Departments

Eight B.Tech branches are taught out of six departments, and the mismatch is worth knowing before you pick one: applied science, humanities and management; civil engineering; computer science and engineering; electronics and communication engineering; electrical engineering; and mechanical and aerospace engineering (NIT Delhi departments). Aerospace has no department of its own, which is why the archive lists a single Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering curriculum from 2024-2025 onwards rather than two (B.Tech curriculum downloads).

Each department states a narrow focus rather than a general one. Computer science describes labs for robotics, intelligent systems and quantum computing; electronics and communication builds around VLSI design, microwave engineering and next-generation communication; electrical engineering points at power electronics, renewable energy systems and green technologies; civil covers structural, transportation, geotechnical, environmental and water resources work (NIT Delhi departments). Those four descriptions, not the institute's overall score, are what a branch decision turns on.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Spending on the permanent campus jumped once the institute occupied it. Capital outlay on new laboratory equipment and software rose from Rs 22,18,400 in 2021-22 to Rs 14,31,87,034 in 2023-24, library acquisitions from Rs 1,12,79,465 to Rs 2,92,71,765, and other capital assets covering classrooms, seminar halls, laboratories and workshops from Rs 2,01,91,987 to Rs 80,82,59,596 (NIRF 2025 data return).

What that bought is listed department by department: an advanced VLSI laboratory, electron devices and circuits, microprocessor and microcontroller, and optical fibre communication on the electronics side; power electronics and drives, control systems, and measurement and instrumentation for electrical; concrete technology, geotechnical engineering, and surveying and remote sensing for civil; and a smart manufacturing lab with a CAD and additive manufacturing technology centre for mechanical (placement brochure).

The central library moved every time the institute did. It opened in Dwarka in June 2012, shifted on 18 February 2014 to the Narela campus it calls NILERD, the same site the institute's disclosure names IAMR, and reached the permanent campus in February 2022; it held roughly 21,000 printed books as of 9 April 2026 and opens from 9 am to 9 pm Monday to Friday (NIT Delhi central library).

Accessibility on the new campus is filed rather than asserted, and the answer is yes to each of the three questions the ranking form puts. Lifts or ramps reach more than 80% of buildings, so do specially designed toilets, and the institute records walking aids, wheelchairs and transport from one block to another (NIRF 2025 data return).

Hostel

Four hostels take residents, and the institute's own count of them does not quite agree with itself. It names three for men, Dauladhar at 381 students, NILERD at 209 and SRHC at 160, and one for women, Yamuna at 270, while the paragraph above those capacities describes four boys' hostels (Dauladhar, NILERD, SRHC, Yamuna hostel pages). The headline it gives is accommodation for around 750 boys and 270 girls, with full-time resident wardens under a chief warden, a night canteen at each mess and CCTV cover (hostel information).

Residence is billed on the same sheet as tuition rather than a separate one. A first-semester room is Rs 32,000 with air conditioning or Rs 20,000 without, and two refundable deposits ride on top, Rs 10,000 for the hostel and Rs 10,000 for the mess, which is how the non-AC hostel line on that sheet totals Rs 40,000 (B.Tech fee structure 2026-27). No monthly mess charge appears anywhere on it, because each hostel mess bills its own.

More beds are on the way and none of them is finished. The institute lists a hostel of 800 seats among the Phase 1B works still under construction on the permanent campus (About NIT Delhi), so a first-year counting on a room should confirm the allotment with the chief warden's office rather than assume one.

Faculty

The teaching body is young, and the pay structure published under the Right to Information Act shows exactly how young. The 17 July 2026 disclosure names 60 teaching posts: the director, 5 professors, 18 associate professors and 36 assistant professors, 12 of the last group at Grade-I and 24 at Grade-II (proactive disclosure). A list with 36 assistant professors and 5 professors is an unusual shape even for an institute founded in 2010, and it means much of the teaching sits with staff early in their own careers.

Set that list against the ranking return and the scale matches: 56 faculty members entered for 1,074 undergraduates and 188 postgraduates, a doctoral roll of 68 full-time and 3 part-time scholars, and 22 full-time and 1 part-time doctorates awarded in 2023-24 (NIRF 2025 data return). With only six departments and a staff list published in full, the useful check on who will teach your branch is that department's own page rather than a campus average.

Notable Alumni

No verified public roster of NIT Delhi graduates exists. The first B.Tech cohort was admitted for the 2010-11 session (proactive disclosure), so even the earliest graduates are around a decade into their careers, and the institute's alumni cell publishes no list of distinguished names. Nothing that aggregator pages attach to this campus can be traced back to a primary record, so none of it is repeated here.

News & Articles

Nothing dated is pinned here, and the reason is this institute's own filing habit rather than general caution. Its fee page alone holds current sheets for the B.Tech, B.Tech DASA, the undergraduate Study in India programme, the M.Tech, self-financed M.Tech, MCA and four separate PhD batches, plus third, fifth and seventh semester sheets, sitting over archives that run back to the spring 2023 semester (NIT Delhi fee structure). A figure lifted from one of those sheets is not the figure on the next one down the page. Examination date sheets and registration notices are filed the same way, grouped by subject rather than by date (NIT Delhi notifications).

College Compare

Five other engineering institutions in Delhi sit on the same 2025 table, and this one is not near the top of them.

Delhi institution, NIRF 2025 engineeringRankScore
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi285.74
Jamia Millia Islamia2462.42
Delhi Technological University3060.85
Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology6351.33
National Institute of Technology Delhi6550.79
Netaji Subhas University of Technology7050.43

The score gap is not the part that changes what you do in June. Two separate counselling calendars are. NIT Delhi is allotted by JoSAA and then CSAB; the capital runs its own committee over the very same JEE Main rank, and the Joint Admission Committee of the Government of NCT of Delhi allots Delhi Technological University, Netaji Subhas University of Technology, Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi and Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (JAC Delhi). A Delhi candidate is therefore live in two processes at once, each with its own rounds and its own region categories, so a seat accepted in one has to be weighed against a round still pending in the other.

Set against other NITs, its placement filing reads better than its rank. NIT Silchar at rank 50 filed a 2023-24 B.Tech median of Rs 11,00,000 (NIT Silchar NIRF 2025 return) and NIT Patna at rank 53 filed Rs 7,00,000 (NIT Patna NIRF 2025 return), against the Rs 15,90,000 recorded here (NIT Delhi NIRF 2025 data return). IIT Delhi shares the city and nothing else in the admission process: it is gated behind JEE Advanced and placed 2nd with 85.74 on the NIRF 2025 engineering ranking, so the two are entered on separate choice lists.

Contact & Location

Narela sits at the far northern edge of Delhi, and the commute is the part applicants underestimate. The placement brochure puts the campus 11 km from Jahangirpuri, the nearest metro station, 30 km from New Delhi railway station and 41 km from Indira Gandhi International Airport (placement brochure).
