Indian Institute Of Engineering Science And Technology, Shibpur

Howrah, West Bengal Est. 1856 Official site Updated
NIRF Architecture
#4

Ask which Indian school of architecture outranks CEPT University and the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, and almost nobody names an engineering campus in Howrah. The 2025 national tables put IIEST Shibpur 4th in architecture and 54th in engineering, and anyone who reads only the second number will misjudge the place.

Two things about the place decide more for a candidate than either rank does. The fee is published as three columns keyed to declared family income, so the number a family should read depends on what it earns. And the branch a counselling round hands you is the branch you graduate in, because the institute no longer allows a change.

Overview

Two dates govern how this institute should be read, and merging them is the commonest mistake made about it. The college opened on 24 November 1856 as the Civil Engineering College, in rooms inside the Writers Building in Calcutta, moved to its present Shibpur ground in Howrah in 1880, and took the name Bengal Engineering College in 1921, per the institute's own history. The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology dates from March 2014, when the Government of India took over Bengal Engineering and Science University through an act of Parliament and made it an Institute of National Importance (history in detail).

So a record listing the year of establishment as 1856 is describing the college, not the institute. The IIEST name is the newest layer on a campus that had already been a government college, a deemed university and then a state university, and it marked its 170th Foundation Day on 24 November 2025 by opening an Institute Archive at Slater Hall (Publicity and Media Cell press release).

The address is Howrah, and the difference from Kolkata is practical rather than pedantic. The campus stands at P.O. Botanic Garden, Howrah 711103 (official website), next to the A. J. C. Bose Indian Botanic Garden and about 1 km from Shalimar railway station, with Howrah station 6 km off and Esplanade, the centre of Kolkata, 9 km away across the river (JoSAA institute profile).

Who studies here cuts against the assumption that a West Bengal institute fills with West Bengal students. Of 2,764 undergraduates on the NIRF 2025 engineering return, 1,304 come from within the state and 1,421 from outside it, with another 39 from outside the country. The out-of-state group is the larger one, and that single fact shapes both the cutoff and the campus.

Courses & Fees

Ten four-year B.Tech branches carry most of the undergraduate teaching: aerospace, civil, computer science and technology, electrical, electronics and telecommunication, information technology, mechanical, metallurgy and materials, mining, and mathematics and computing. The Architecture, Town and Regional Planning department runs a five-year B.Arch to Council of Architecture norms, and three five-year integrated M.Sc streams cover applied geology, chemistry and physics (JoSAA institute profile).

A B.Tech student may apply after the sixth semester for a dual degree running to ten semesters, finishing with both the B.Tech and an M.Tech, in every branch except mathematics and computing (JoSAA institute profile). That is a decision taken three years in, not at counselling, so it does not need to sit in a preference list.

The fee is not one number. IIEST publishes three columns keyed to declared annual family income, which means a family can read its own figure instead of a headline rate with an asterisk under it.

B.Tech fee for 2026-27Family income above Rs 5 lakhRs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakhBelow Rs 1 lakh, and SC, ST, PwD
First semester, without hostelRs 96,600Rs 54,933Rs 34,100
First semester, with hostelRs 1,35,300Rs 93,633Rs 72,800
Winter semester, without hostelRs 74,000Rs 32,333Rs 11,500
Later monsoon semester, without hostelRs 81,600Rs 39,933Rs 19,100

Two footnotes on that table change what it really costs. Every first-semester figure carries a refundable caution deposit, Rs 6,000 without a hostel place and Rs 7,000 with one, and every with-hostel figure carries a Rs 20,000 mess advance that is set against actual food bills rather than kept (JoSAA institute profile). The caution money is paid once, at admission, and refunded after the course finishes, so it sits on the first-semester row and nowhere else (JoSAA institute profile).

The other two undergraduate programmes price differently. B.Arch opens at Rs 97,600 for the first semester without a hostel in the top income band, a shade above the B.Tech at every stage (JoSAA institute profile). The integrated M.Sc is the real outlier, opening at Rs 43,100 without a hostel, with the two upper income bands paying the identical amount, so the income tiering that dominates a B.Tech bill barely touches it (JoSAA institute profile). SC, ST and PwD students receive a 100% waiver of tuition fees, and the institute's Global Alumni Association funds a further set of scholarships on top (JoSAA institute profile).

Admissions

JoSAA's own institute profile files IIEST under the heading "Type of the institute: National Institute of Technology" (JoSAA institute profile). That line is the neatest evidence of where the institute actually sits. It is not an NIT and not an IIT, yet it is allotted in the same counselling rounds as both, on a JEE Main rank and nothing else.

Nine engineering departments admit their undergraduates through JEE Main, the institute states on its own B.Tech admission page; the tenth B.Tech that appears in counselling, mathematics and computing, is taught out of the mathematics department. The five-year B.Arch is filled on the architecture paper of the same exam (B.Arch admission page). Both pages name three channels rather than one: JoSAA, the CSAB rounds that follow it, and DASA, the route reserved for candidates applying from abroad.

One line in the counselling profile deserves more weight than any cutoff. IIEST moved its undergraduate course structure to the NEP 2020 pattern from the 2025-26 session, and under that structure "there is no provision for branch change" (JoSAA institute profile). Where a first-year switch on grades exists, a low-preference branch is a foothold. Here it is the whole degree, so the order of the preferences submitted is the decision itself and not an opening bid.

Postgraduate entry is settled elsewhere. M.Tech and the master's in urban and regional planning are allotted through CCMT, and the two-year M.Sc through CCMN, both national counselling bodies rather than the institute (M.Tech admission page, M.Sc admission page). The two-year full-time MBA is the one programme the institute admits to itself, with applications invited online and shortlisted candidates called for interview (MBA admission page). Doctoral admission opens on a July cycle across engineering and technology, science, architecture and planning, and humanities and social sciences (PhD admission page).

Cutoff

The seat arithmetic tells a candidate more, and earlier, than a published rank does. Every programme appears twice in the 2026-27 counselling matrix, once for West Bengal candidates and once for everyone else, and the two entries are near-mirrors of each other: computer science and engineering carries 51 seats on each side, mechanical 51 and 51, civil 78 and 77, aerospace 25 and 26 (JoSAA institute profile).

A Bengal candidate should be careful about what that split appears to promise. The out-of-state half fills with students from across the country, and the enrolment proves it: 1,421 undergraduates from other states against 1,304 from within West Bengal (NIRF 2025 engineering return). So the West Bengal half is a separate queue rather than a documented discount, and neither IIEST nor JoSAA publishes how far apart the two pools finally close.

No qualifying rank is fixed before the rounds run, and IIEST publishes none of its own. The only authoritative version lives in the opening and closing rank archive on the JoSAA portal, queried by year, round, institute, programme and category. That archive is a live query rather than a document, so any rank copied out of it and printed elsewhere goes stale the moment the next round is allotted. Run the query for the exact programme, quota and category being entered, and read the closing rank of the last round.

Placements

IIEST publishes its placement sheet department by department, and it keeps three counts separate that a single placement percentage would blur. For the 2025 undergraduate pass-out batch, 633 students registered as interested and eligible, 502 offers were made, and 426 were actually placed through the campus process (Placement Statistics 2025).

Department, 2025 UG pass-out batchInterested and eligibleActually placed

Electronics and Telecommunication6341
Mechanical Engineering6255
Mining Engineering3731
Metallurgy and Materials3427
Aerospace Engineering2810
Architecture247
All departments633426

The gap between those two columns needs reading the way the institute itself writes it. Students the campus process did not place are entered on the same sheet as students who "might have secured jobs under individual initiatives / joined higher studies", the institute's own hedged phrasing, so that group is a residue rather than a count of confirmed jobs. Mechanical engineering is the standout at 55 of 62. Architecture and aerospace are the thin ends, at 7 of 24 and 10 of 28 (Placement Statistics 2025).

Postgraduate placement is a harder read and the same sheet does not soften it. Across every master's programme, 183 postgraduates registered as interested and eligible for the 2025 batch, and 41 were actually placed (Placement Statistics 2025).

Salary comes from a different return and a different year, so the two sets of figures should not be merged. On the NIRF 2025 engineering return, 617 undergraduates finished in the stipulated time in 2023-24, 530 were placed and 78 went on to higher studies, with a median salary of Rs 8,50,000, level with the previous year and up from Rs 7,30,000 for the 2021-22 cohort. On the postgraduate side the same return counts 85 placements among 127 graduates in 2023-24 at a median of Rs 7,50,000, a figure it repeats unchanged for each of the earlier years it covers.

Architecture reports separately, and its numbers are far lower than the fourth-place rank suggests. B.Arch graduates recorded a median of Rs 4,80,000 for 2023-24, with 21 of 23 placed, against Rs 5,75,000 the year before (NIRF 2025 architecture return). A top-four national standing and a top-four salary are not the same thing, and at IIEST they point in opposite directions.

Seat Matrix

The 2026-27 counselling matrix carries 910 undergraduate seats in total, divided almost exactly down the middle between the West Bengal and the other-than-West-Bengal pools (JoSAA institute profile).

Programme, JoSAA 2026-27West Bengal seatsOther than West Bengal

Applied Geology, 5-year integrated M.Sc1010

Physics, 5-year integrated M.Sc1010

Two caveats sit on that table. Each figure counts every seat pool together, the women-only supernumerary block included, so it is not the number of open-category places available. And it belongs to one admission year: the NIRF 2025 engineering return records a sanctioned intake of 740 for the four-year programmes in 2023-24 and 420 on the two-year postgraduate side, a different measure covering a different set of programmes. The matrix JoSAA has live while preferences are being entered is the one that binds.

Rankings

IIEST holds two national placings, and they read as though they belong to two different institutions that happen to share an address.

NIRF 2025 categoryRankScorePerception sub-score
Architecture468.3758.26
Engineering5453.6329.71

The architecture placing is not an artefact of a thin field. Only IIT Roorkee at 83.95, NIT Calicut at 77.89 and IIT Kharagpur at 77.38 score above IIEST's 68.37 on the 2025 architecture table. Jamia Millia Islamia follows at 67.15 and CEPT University at 65.73, while the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, the name most people would have put at the top of this table, is 8th at 65.11.

The engineering table reads the other way. IIEST comes 54th at 53.63, a quarter of a point behind NIT Patna at 53.89 and a similar margin ahead of NIT Jalandhar at 53.38 (2025 engineering table). Perception is where the two disciplines separate most sharply, 58.26 on the architecture table against 29.71 on the engineering table, from one campus, one management and one hiring pool.

Scale explains part of it. The architecture programme enters 108 undergraduates and 20 faculty members on its own NIRF return, against 2,764 undergraduates on the engineering return. A fourth-place national rank earned on a department that small is a genuine result, and it is also a narrow one.

Departments

Sixteen departments carry the teaching: aerospace engineering and applied mechanics, architecture and planning, chemistry, civil engineering, computer science and technology, earth sciences, electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunication engineering, human resource management, humanities and social sciences, information technology, mathematics, mechanical engineering, metallurgy and materials engineering, mining engineering, and physics (department list). The counselling profile counts fifteen instead, leaving human resource management out of its faculty structure and describing it separately as the department responsible for placements and practical training (JoSAA institute profile).

Eight schools and a centre sit alongside them, and several are the kind of interdisciplinary unit a department cannot house: the School of Advanced Materials, Green Energy and Sensor Systems, the School of Mechatronics and Robotics, the School of VLSI Technology, the School of Ecology, Infrastructure and Human Settlement Management, the Purabi Das School of Information Technology, the School of Disaster Mitigation Engineering, the School of Community Science and Technology, the School of Management Sciences, and the Centre for Health Care Science and Technology. All of them report through three faculties of study, engineering and technology, basic and applied sciences, and social and management sciences (JoSAA institute profile).

Those departments were not laid down together. Architecture, Town and Regional Planning opened in 1949 (institute history), electronics and telecommunication engineering was sanctioned and mining engineering began functioning in 1956, and computer science and technology became a degree course only in 1982 (history in detail). Civil engineering, the single subject the college was founded to teach, is older than all of them (institute history).

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus runs to 114 acres on the Howrah bank of the Hooghly and holds three large water bodies; one of them, Bidisha Lake, is connected to the river and rises and falls with the tide (Why join IIEST). Its oldest buildings are in daily use rather than fenced off, with the heritage athletic club building housing the gymnasium (Why join IIEST).

The Ramanujan Central Library opened in April 1857 with a capital outlay of Rs 5,000 and now occupies around 3,000 square metres (library page). It holds more than 1.4 lakh text and reference books and 40,000 bound volumes of journals, stays open from 9 am to midnight, and keeps a collection of nineteenth-century books and journals beside its subscriptions to the engineering and science consortia (JoSAA institute profile).

The workshop complex runs nine engineering workshops, from carpentry, smithy and welding through foundry and pattern work to automobile and boiler practice. Departments, offices and hostels share a campus fibre optic network and the whole site is Wi-Fi enabled, and the institute keeps a hospital with an isolation ward and a 24-hour ambulance, three nationalised banks with ATMs inside the gates, a swimming pool, a gymnasium and two grounds (JoSAA institute profile).

Hostel

A hostel place here is allotted, not assured, and that is stated rather than implied. Residential accommodation for all students, undergraduates included, is not guaranteed because the hostels are short of seats, and rooms go by availability (JoSAA institute profile). With a student population above 4000 spread across 18 hostels, three of them for women, that shortage is arithmetic rather than policy, and an out-of-state family should plan for the possibility of paying rent in Shibpur.

What a place costs is already visible in the fee table. A first-semester bill in the top income band is Rs 1,35,300 with a hostel against Rs 96,600 without, and the higher figure carries the Rs 20,000 mess advance and a Rs 7,000 refundable caution deposit inside it (JoSAA institute profile). The halls keep names from the college's older life, Richardson, Macdonald, Sen, Sengupta and Wolfenden among the single-seated ones, with the Sister Nivedita Ladies Hostel and Pandya Hall for women (halls of residence).

Faculty

The institute employs 267 regular faculty members across the professor, associate professor and assistant professor grades, with retired senior professors teaching alongside them on contractual, visiting and honorary terms (JoSAA institute profile).

What that staff does beyond the classroom is easier to measure than teaching quality, and the research returns are the place to look. The engineering return records 747 full-time doctoral scholars and none part-time, with 94 PhDs awarded in 2023-24, and counts 55 sponsored research projects that year drawn from 19 funding agencies, against 17 projects in 2021-22 (NIRF 2025 engineering return). Consultancy is the busier line and the more revealing one: 107 projects for 78 client organisations in 2023-24, which is a working relationship with industry rather than a ceremonial one (NIRF 2025 engineering return).

Architecture is staffed on an entirely different scale, with 20 faculty members entered on its own NIRF return. Anyone weighing the fourth-place architecture rank should hold that number next to it, because a department of that size is a small group of people and the specific staff in it matter more than the institute average.

Notable Alumni

Sir R. N. Mukherjee is the one former student the institute singles out in its own history, named there as one of the most distinguished ex-students of the college and as chairman of the Mukherjee Committee, whose recommendations reorganised the departments from 1921 onward (institute history).

There is no distinguished-alumni roster beyond that name. The alumni cell page lists its serving committee, each member given with a department and a graduating year, which is a working roster and not a statement about anyone's standing (alumni cell). A new alumni portal was launched on the 2025 Foundation Day, and the alumni felicitated that afternoon were not named in the release (Publicity and Media Cell press release).

The long alumni lists that circulate on college listing sites cannot be traced back to anything IIEST publishes, so they are left off.

News & Articles

The 170th Foundation Day on 24 November 2025 opened with the inauguration of an Institute Archive at Slater Hall, a historic building on the campus. The archive gathers documents, photographs, manuscripts, architectural plans, administrative records, antique equipment and memorabilia covering the institute's continuous legacy since 1856 (Publicity and Media Cell press release).

The same programme released an IIEST, Shibpur Vision Document setting out the institute's academic, research and developmental roadmap, and launched a new alumni portal (Publicity and Media Cell press release). It also puts the current officers on the record, with Prof. V. M. S. R. Murthy as Director and Smt. Tejaswini AnanthKumar as Chairperson of the Board of Governors (Publicity and Media Cell press release).

College Compare

The comparison a West Bengal candidate really makes is with Jadavpur University and NIT Durgapur, and it resolves differently in the two disciplines. On the 2025 engineering table Jadavpur ranks 18th at 64.54 and NIT Durgapur 49th at 55.94, both above IIEST at 54th and 53.63, with IIT Kharagpur 5th at 78.69. Turn to architecture and the order inverts: IIEST is 4th at 68.37 against Jadavpur's 16th at 59.30, and IIT Kharagpur at 3rd and 77.38 is the only West Bengal name above it.

The second comparison is a category question rather than a ranking one. IIEST is neither an IIT nor an NIT nor an IIIT, yet JoSAA allots it in the same pool and files it as a National Institute of Technology in its own institute profile (JoSAA institute profile). In practice the entrance, the counselling rounds, the home-state split and the income-banded fee remission behave as they do at an NIT. What does not is the spread between its own two placings: an institute sitting 54th in engineering and 4th in architecture has to be shortlisted one discipline at a time rather than slotted into a tier.

Contact & Location

Admission questions here reach named people rather than a general desk. The counselling profile gives Dr. Kaushik Das and Dr. Saptarshi Kundu as the contact persons for admission and ugadmission@iiests.ac.in as the undergraduate address (JoSAA institute profile).
